Boy don’t I know it. If you go to one of those schools, make sure you graduate or you’ll end up like me and have $60,000 of debt and nothing tangible to show for it.

Topic: Game Programming / [Unity] ....Floating points...?

Haven’t used Unity at all, but is Screen.width a float or an int? Cause if it’s an int, you’re gonna get an int back from that equation before it converts to a float which is probably where that 0 is coming from.

I think that’s your problem, it loaded up very quickly in my browser and I have a generally slow download speed.

Topic: Game Programming / What is the best way to implement a singleton.

No, just the instance of your class will be static. From that static instance, you can refer to any of the variables and functions you have defined in that class. So to build on aldrin’s example so you can see how it would work:

class Singleton
{
    private static var _instance:Singleton;
    public var _someValue:int;

    public static function getInstance():Singleton
    {
        if (_instance == null)
            _instance = new Singleton();

        return _instance;
    }

    public function someFunction():void
    {
        return true;
    }
}

class Whatever
{
    public function something():void
    {
        Singleton singleton = Singleton.getInstance();
        Singleton.getInstance()._someValue;
        Singleton.getInstance().someFunction();
    }
}

If you follow aldrin’s code above, all you’ll need to do to access it is use Singleton._instance and you won’t need to pass it to any of your other classes.

It’s weird finding a post you made in a two year old topic that you didn’t realize was two years old and that you had posted in.

Topic: MARDEK RPG: Chapter 3 / Your Favorite MARDEK Moments

Originally posted by Sunwave:

I had the music muted because I was listening other background music (and i had been in the water temple for too long so the real background music became annoying). Then I went to Saul’s place. He captured us, and then some things happened,, blah blah, and one part of the dialogue was:

Vehrn: “Mardek, did you hear that?”
Mardek: “No, because the sound is turned off.”

I was like O.O
And then I lol’d.

lol! That’s great, would never have expected that. My favorite line is certainly “What’s a food?” but I kinda like this scene too:

Mardek – “Well, this isn’t going nearly as well as I—”
Rohoph – “Shut up, Mardek, the grown-ups are talking.”
Donovan – “Uh… Mardek, are you okay?”

Not really all that funny, but still kinda interesting seeing Rohoph actually snap at Mardek like that. (still haven’t finished chapter 3 yet so I don’t know if that continues all the way to the ending)

Yeah, it’s kind of silly to assume that you wouldn’t fight the World Saviors in the Fire Temple. Did everyone expect them to just up and leave the temple when you got the crystal?

No profit off game = No getting sued

The page w/ the ad would not exist without the game. If the game is good, more people visit the page and see the ads. It’s silly to suggest that the game does not directly have an influence on the number of ad-views and amount of money you earn.

Yes, it’s called “not uploading your game.”

Topic: Kongregate / Does uploading to kongregate count as commercial gain?

Yes, it counts as commercial gain because kongregate gives developers money for ad views from their games. You won’t get sued or anything, since you won’t be earning enough from ad views for adobe to care, but if they found out and cared enough (not likely) they could force kongregate to remove your game or revoke your license to the software.

You can upload to other sites that don’t pay you for ad views with no problems, such as newgrounds.

I ended up getting through with 2440 myself, and over 500 of those were on level 40. I agree with methinkso, the walljump wasn’t particularly tough, it was hitting the precise skid jumps, over and over and over. When I finally DID beat level 40, it was on a single run (all 25 coins), so perhaps I was getting greedy :P.

Man, who HASN’T finished IWBTG? :D

I actually haven’t gotten around to finishing IWBTG yet. :( I’ve been playing it in short spurts every several months and last time I played, I was stuck on the Mother Brain fight.

And you know, I think now is as good a time as any to pick that game up again, so thanks for reminding me. :D

Anyone who gets 1010 coins with under 2000 or even 3000+ deaths will be highly suspect… but, if you want to give some kind of “Realistic” lower bound, i’d say 500. It’s just not possible to do it in under 500. Even Half, who has beaten the game twice now, and is uber awesome at it… had over 1300 deaths on his SECOND time through the game.

I’ve yet to get 1010 coins (in fact, I only have a bit over 700), and I have 3000+ deaths.

Definitely anything double digits is going to be fake… and almost certainly anything under 1000.

2114 deaths here and only because levels 30 and 32 had me nearing 200 deaths each. Then again, I had played most if not all of the author’s other games before (never finished the Jumpers, though – waaaaaay harder than MoneySeize), not to mention IWBTG which surely teaches you in the ways of zen platforming. And I was hot off finishing La-Mulana completely unspoiled, so yeah, MoneySeize didn’t look that intimidating. Below 2000 deaths is certainly doable in a first playthrough, but it isn’t easy – for a while I though I would pull it off but the aforementioned levels doomed my chances. I wanted to say that below 3000 should be par for the course for a good player who, you know, actually THINKS the levels before trying, but statistics apparently say otherwise. And dying 2000+ deaths on level 40 like some fellow did is completely unexplainable, since it’s a very obvious level with only a (very) difficult walljump at the beginning to attempt to justify its place as the last “regular” level. I died 62 times there and felt like it was too much.

Well I’m a veteran Jumper/IWBTG player as well, and I managed to beat Moneyseize 100% with 2751 deaths. And you know what? 690 of those were from level 40. Doing single-tile skid jumps next to spike walls on a laggy computer is a crapshoot at best. Doing several single-tile skids jumps basically one after another is asking for a mini-miracle. And the wall jump was pretty simple imo, but whatevs.

There are always bugs.
