SnailGame did not upload HoG because he felt like it. There was an articulated agreement prior to its publication, hence the Kreds system. Kong would not have agreed to host and promote the game if it meant a potential lawsuit.

Also: If HoG is breaking the law, then HoM&M broke the law and were lucky that the J.R.R. Tolkein foundation didn't sue them based on intellectual copyrights.

As far as the mechanics are concerned, you cannot copyright a game mechanic. You can copyright the source code that makes a mechanic do what it does, but not the concept of the mechanic itself. This means that if the developers of HoG found a way to get the same mechanical effect as HoMM using a different coding structure (which they obviously had to do since this is coded in Flash, not C++), then the mechanic is legitimate and wholly legal.

Learn what can and cannot be copyrighted.

The Heroes of Gaia Happy Hour (Which is active from 2000 EST to 2200 EST) currently affords an unfair advantage to North American and South American players. As it stands, Happy Hour takes place during the early hours of the morning over in Europe. Given my observations, I assume that at least 20% of Kong's traffic for Heroes of Gaia is from Europe.

Because of this, they deserve to have *convenient* access to the same events that the North and South Americans have: Happy Hour.

I propose a new system for Happy Hour, one that allows the user to choose when they wish to engage in the event. The programming side of this is relatively simple: Create a buff that reduces AP costs by one-half for 1 hour, then make that buff the reward for one of the daily quests. As a daily quest, the player would only have the option to participate in Happy Hour once per day.

With this solution there is the argument that a player could occasionally claim two Happy Hour buffs in one day if they break a fame rank (which resets your daily tasks), but that is quickly becoming a rare occurrence for the top players, but this would also help lower players keep up and/or catch up since they advance in rank faster than the top players do.

Another alternative would be to have 2 One-hour Happy Hours, one at 0700 EST, and another at 1900 EST.

I consider the first solution to be the fairest as it removes any and all timezone limitations and allows every user to participate in Happy Hour.

Let's seriously try to keep this discussion civil.

Sockem you need to stop completely disregarding valid reasons from users who have worked intimately with badge creation system.

It is generally a good rule of thumb that if a game has higher than a 3.25 rating before badges, then the rating reflects a mostly positive reception. Through extrapolation, Greg can use that reception in order to reach a reasonable conclusion as to how the badges will be received. Greg doesn't want (and shouldn't have to) go through the trouble of badging a game with a 2.0 rating just because a vocal minority enjoys the game. While the game may offer badge-worthy statistics, the backlash incurred through the badges would be terrible for both Kongregate.com and the developer who created the game.

Even some of the highest rated games have received flak because of their badges. Look at developers like Edmund and Rudy_sudarto; they have some of the most played games on the website, yet a large group despises their games.

Badges are a double-edged sword. Badges will (for the short term) increase ad revenue and notoriety to a significant degree; however, for some developers the notoriety gained is negative and places a permanent negative association on future productions from that same developer. For an example take a look at AdultSwimGames: Bible Fight generated a stigma that AdultSwimGames are horribly over-rated. Because of this association, a lot of people vote 1/5 on AdultSwimGames just because of how they reacted to Bible Fight.

Greg has already stated that Pel may or may not receive badges once he finishes with the other games he has currently slated for badges. So please stop attacking other users. Such immature reactions only discredit your opinions.

Greg doesn&#8217;t want (and shouldn&#8217;t have to) go through the trouble of badging a game with a 2.0 rating just because a vocal minority enjoys the game. While the game may offer badge-worthy statistics, the backlash incurred through the badges would be terrible for both Kongregate.com and the developer who created the game.</p>
<p>Even some of the highest rated games have received flak because of their badges. Look at developers like Edmund and Rudy_sudarto; they have some of the most played games on the website, yet a large group despises their games.</p>
<p>Badges are a double-edged sword. Because of this association, a lot of people vote 1/5 on AdultSwimGames just because of how they reacted to Bible Fight.</p>
<p>Greg has already stated that Pel may or may not receive badges once he finishes with the other games he has currently slated for badges. So please stop attacking other users. Such immature reactions only discredit your opinions.</p></body-html>

bq. Did I really act beyond my authority as an average user?

Yes. You should not be using the word "warnings" or threatening users with silences. Not even us mods are allowed to threaten users. ;)

It should be noted that minimodding is neither productive nor encouraged. In fact, it is quite simply annoying.

Well you know how they say old habits die hard? Well one of mine has recently resurfaced. I uncovered the reincarnation of one of my favorite Text RPGs from back in '02-'04. It's a bit unkempt at the moment, but I'm actually hoping to give it a bit of a lively spark again.

www.stratshire.com

The game is entirely text based. So aside from the chat function it is played entirely with the mouse. *NOTE:* This is _not_ a MUD.

The server can only handle 30 people online at a time because it hasn't been busy enough recently to bother investing in anything beyond that. I spoke to the owner of the game and he is willing to expand as needed so long as the players are contributing to the expansion budget.

If you're interested, sign up and feel free to apply for the clan "Midgard". That's the clan I am running for Kongites.

*IMPORTANT:* Read the manual PRIOR to making an account. Your race and class combination DOES matter.

The clan is run by myself and KilleroftheGods.
