Topic: Serious Discussion / On Anarchy:Chaos and Order

This thread is definitely about lawlessness, not Anarchy. Anarchy is a utopian lack of government where no one person has any power over any other person. Lawlessness is the absence of a powerful, legitimate government. What you are speaking about is not anarchy.
1. Government disappears
2. Someones take control and govern
3. They are now the government
It is not an anarchy now that persons have power over others, and thus is governing them.

Is that so? Then why do anarchists say no to the police? Obviously if you have rules you need a group of people who will be there to enforce rules. Contradicting yourselves, don’t you? Also, let’s look past that. Let’s assume we have no hierarchy but we still have rules. So, who will make the rules? We don’t want hierarchy but we want rules, who will make the decision about the rules? Will we all 7 billion people come together and start throwing rules around? Someone needs to have law making power. And someone needs to have law enforcing power. Get it?

Rules can be created and followed without an enforcement branch handling it. If nations sign a treaty saying not to use nuclear weapons, there is no nation with power forcing another nation to do it. The nations follow the rule under the pretense that everyone else signing the treaty will follow the rule too.

Let’s say that you and I live together. Let’s say that I leave the sink on and you never flush the toilet. If we were to sign a pact that we would both stop doing these things, then there is no enforcement of such a pact. The reason we follow the pact is because we know that if we stop following the pact, everyone else that follows the pact will stop as well.

Once power becomes involved, it is no longer an anarchy by definition, and is thus out of the jurisdiction of this thread.

Anarchism is flawed, but Anarchy itself is a pretty clear concept. No one has any more power than anyone else. You can live an entire life without ever knowing what “power” is. If you are sick, I can voluntarily find medicine for you without you or another person commanding me to. But without any sort of concept of power, I could be sick and feel hopeless because I know that there’s no way I shall get medicine unless someone offers up to do it themselves.

No, you cannot have leaders in an anarchy. You did not read any of my post. A government submitted to voluntarily is still a government.

It can be either. You need to respect peoples’ moral compasses and wherever they may point.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Planned Parenthood and Republican Propaganda

I read MyTie’s post differently. I saw it as a support for the Planned Parenthood position, because what they do with federal funding is completely unrelated to what they’re doing with their own time and money. If Planned Parenthood wanted to split into two entities, one abortiony and one not, it would be no different than if the Neo Nazi group decided to split into two entities, one killing jews and one screening breast cancer.

When a leader becomes involved, it is no longer anarchy. When power becomes involved, it is no longer an anarchy. If a group of five people live in a house, and there are no established rules, but no one is being murdered or stolen from, that is still an anarchy. Any utopia is an anarchy, because ideally, we think of having no constraints on ourselves, but that we impose our own constraints on ourselves.

So you say that the location meant everything? Is that not a form of luck?

When people say "I wasn’t talking to you!’ it’s generally just them being an ass. They weren’t being clear on who they were talking to, and now they’re trying to avoid listening to whatever you have to say in the most arsey way possible.

If firearms became obsolete in this method you’ve described, humanity would sooner see a retreat to crossbows, longbows, and other classic sharp-things-hurt-people weapons than it would shoot-people-two-feet-away-from-where-they’re-standing-pew-pew-laser-guns weapons. Also: Hyphens.

So we all know Austria, right? Small Holy Roman kingdom that swelled and grew until it took over much of central Europe. Was the kingdom really special? Was it the conviction or finesse of its government, or was it all a winning drawing of a german control lottery? If Austria hadn’t risen, would another state have done so? Which other state? Would it have been under similar circumstances?

The way I see it, it looks like Austria was none different than any other Holy Roman kingdom of the time, and that it gained all its power, prestige, and, most importantly, land through an extremely lucky streak.

Let’s all self-exile ourselves from mass media. We shall all only hear things from word of mouth. It’ll be like telephone. No matter what news I get, I’m going to tell everybody that Davy Jones is running for New Mexico Senator.

Suppose you are in a stadium.

Now suppose you are bacon. To the right of you is someone with slightly less fat. The person to the left of you is salami. When does one stop being bacon and start being salami?

I’m hungry.

People die, deal with it. Taking into account the classic market variables of supply and demand, human lives are pretty cheap right now.

Topic: Serious Discussion / ARE We In The End Times?

The Mayan calendar didn’t need leap years because it’s not that kind of calendar. Leap years are an invention of the Gregorian Calendar that keeps it only up to 26 seconds off of the solar calendar at a time. Whether the mayans have their own calendar, and if they chose not to make that addition, then they didn’t. I still think the mayan calendar thing is total bull, though.

One thing we are seeing is the effects of climate change. Climate disasters are getting more frequent and more dangerous. Some areas have even had their entire climate patterns swapped. Grasslands are becoming deserts, forests are becoming grasslands, etc. Of course, human civilization will collapse economically before we hit a point of no return, so it’s all good and fine. Well, unless you enjoy human civilization.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Countries That Should not be Countries?

The Vatican has been around for at least half a millennium. It’s a state in its own right. If the pope were not his own sovereign, he would be manipulated by whoever was, and then we get massive corruption much worse than has already happened. And absolving the Vatican as a country would do nothing to get rid of the religious institution planted there. No altar boys would be “unmolested”, and future molestation would still happen, Vatican government or non-Vatican government. When a region becomes part of another country, it’s not like that region completely gives up its own identity and becomes a clone of the controlling group. If that were true, all Spaniards would be Castillian and all Dutchmen would be Spanish, and by extension also Castillian.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Music Differentiation

So we always hear people saying the same thing for different types of music, “It’s not real music”, or “It can hardly even be called music!” I know these things because I am myself one of these such people. It was done to ragtime, it was done to rock, disco, and now it’s being done to hip-hop, rap, and other hoo-hah. Where is it that we draw the line between music and non-music, and do we really have a right to dictate to other people what is and isn’t music? How does this extend to other forms of art like literature and the visual arts (Although please keep modern art discussion to a minimum, make a new thread if it is needed).

Luxembourg is a fine country, they’re historically established and even have some form of French dialect specific to themselves. I recall the old saying, “Size doesn’t matter”

Topic: Serious Discussion / Political status of Puerto Rico: should it become the 51st state?

I think Puerto Rico should take a small step away from the US and become a vassal, rather than a loosely held territory. Something like the current relationship between France and Luxembourg. We don’t fit with them, and they don’t fit with us, but we still have control over them because of military conquest.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Are viruses and fire considered living things?

There are 5 criteria for life. I’m not sure if I can remember them all, but they’re something like universal genetic code, reproduction, response to stimuli, grows/develops, and uses resources. Fire reproduces, responds to stimuli, grows, and uses resources, but it doesn’t have a universal genetic code. Viruses have a code and reproduce, but lack other traits.
