Topic: Technical Support / Preloaders not working?

Ooh, interesting. I got a number of bug reports about the infinitely-loading test tube and had no idea what that was about. Thanks!

Our fault – all games with apostrophes are busted at the moment – should be fixed very soon!

Topic: Technical Support / Kong Chat Disconnects =[

The more information we can get the better. I haven’t had this happen to me, but if multiple people are seeing it perhaps something is amiss. What operating systems and internet browsers are you using? Does this happen in other browsers? What about other computers at your house (i.e. on the same network). I don’t think we’ve made any changes on our end, but that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible that something broke. So the more we can find out about the systems having problems the more we can help identify this (assuming it’s something on our end). Thanks!

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Sacred Seasons 2 MMORPG] Server is down!

Yes, there were some technical problems. We have pulled the game down temporarily so that the server issues can be addressed. Look for the game to come back soon, hopefully a little later today.

Topic: Technical Support / Can't Connect

Have you guys tried other computers at your house? If it doesn’t work on another computer then there’s a good chance that it’s a problem with your router being too restrictive. If it does work on another computer, then your network is fine and there is likely a security setting or software that is blocking connections on the busted computer.

Topic: Technical Support / How Can You Post Screenshots on Kong (Without Microsoft Paint or Wordpad or whatever)

I actually use TinyGrab (http://tinygrab.com/) all the time at work. It automatically uploads the file to a server and gives you a link to it. The free version is as much as most people need and it’s extremely convenient. I definitely recommend, though note that they do the hosting, so I wouldn’t post anything sensitive with the program.

Please send an email to support@kongregate.com – hopefully they can track down the password, or manually change it for you if they can verify you as the owner of the account.

Also, if you’re legitimately using Mozilla, please upgrade to Firefox, Chrome, or, dare I say it, IE. I’m not sure that we even officially support the old Mozilla browser.

Topic: Technical Support / KONGREGATE VIRUS (Experiment on 3/19 - Anyone see the virus?)

Yeah, the problem we're having is that it seems like this might be an already-existing virus on everyone's computer who is seeing this. It sounds a lot like the XP Antivirus 2010 virus that has been going around (in fact, my mother had it a few weeks ago). I used removal instructions like these to get rid of it:

http://www.xp-vista.com/remove/antivirus-2010

(I don't recall if that was the exact link or not, but the instructions look about the same). For anyone who has seen this fake virus scan, can you look in your processes (Ctrl-Alt-Delete -> Task Manager -> Processes tab) and see if you see av.exe or something like that running? I'll admit that it's a bit of a chicken-egg problem, but I'm wondering if in fact we're just seeing a rash of viruses that are creating these fake virus scans.

Also, can you download and run Spybot and see if it finds anything? I'd really like to get some confirmation that we're not chasing the wrong source of the problem, since we've had a hard time replicating it on our end.

For those seeing Antivirus 7 as the name, perhaps one of these will help:

Topic: Technical Support / Will I lose money if I don't cash a check?

Please email us using the Developer Support option in the Contact Us page (under Help) for more details. If you need to change payment methods we can arrange for that, and as long as the check isn’t cashed we should be able to credit it back to your account.

Topic: Kongregate / ***Kongregate Beta Game List (none right now)***

Battle Dawn was just added, also for level 25+. See the original post for the link and description.

EDIT: Battle Dawn was removed due to a bug. Hopefully it can be added again, in working order, tomorrow.

Topic: Game Programming / Make Your Own Coding Tutorials

Well, that depends. I think if you’re going to upload it to Kongregate and put it in our tutorials category it would need to be Flash related (be it programming, animation, vector art, maybe music/sound development, etc.). If you’re just using it to upload on your own site or elsewhere I think you’re welcome to do whatever with it, as long as you give us credit of course. :)

Haha, sorry ’bout that. You and Moly emailed me gave me the idea. :-) Anyway, now you can move on and do a different tutorial instead.

Updated the tutorial to include the <GROUP_CODE> sample and update some of the text. I do not have a new download method yet – I’m looking into that but can’t make promises yet.

explodingferret – Only admins and the developer of the game can view games in Preview mode, so I’m afraid that one won’t work.

Kingfish34 – have you considered looking at www.flashgamelicense.com? It’s an excellent resource that can help you get developer feedback in a controlled manner like you’re looking for. You can set limits on who can see it (only those who have sponsored games, or have uploaded a game, or have posted a lot in the forums, whatever), or you can open it up to any developer who has an account there.

Having beta test tools on Kong would be a cool idea though. I don’t think it’s in our immediate plans, but hopefully more sophisticated dev tools will make it into our long term plans.

Topic: Game Programming / Problem with powerups

DinoLando has an excellent idea, actually. Using 4 frames would work perfectly. However, in the interest of education, here’s what you need to do in order to handle visibility. I’m assuming you have created 4 symbols: tenPoints, tenLives, spawnReset, and pauseEnemies. Those symbols were probably added to the canvas of your PowerUp symbol, all centered at (0,0). Now you were hoping to make one visible and the rest invisible. In order to do this, you need to give instance names to each of the ones that you dragged onto your canvas. “tenPoints” is the name of the class most likely. You’ll want to name the instance something like tenPoints_mc, and then you’ll write

this.PowerUp.tenPoints_mc._visible = false;

Oh, actually, reading this again, here’s your problem. You want:

this.tenPoints._visible = false;

“this” is PowerUp, because you’re in the PowerUp class, so “this.PowerUp” wouldn’t exist. Feel free to ignore my instance vs. class talk above if you already had that set up properly.

I moved the < /pre> tags to the same line as the code instead of on separate lines in your post – apparently that makes a difference, though I’m not sure why. Formatting’s much better now – no more making things bold. :)

As for your question, Wordblind has an excellent point. You want to use “this”, not “root”, to change the visibility. The difference is that you only want to affect this one instance, rather than try to change something that exists on root. The timer looks fine to me – I’m not sure why multiples would spawn.

Topic: Game Programming / BlackBone's Toolbox For Developers![Soon to under go maintenance]

GormenGhast – there is a Collabs forum separate from the Art and Music forums, that is aimed at putting together teams of developers to create games. We also have the Kongregate Labs forum, which could be a good match, except right now it’s pretty heavily focused on the shootorial instead of general game design. So, I think your point is valid – lacking a “Game Development” forum, the Programming forum is probably the best place for this now. Eventually I think it’d be nice to have a general Game Dev forum, but until we get a forum overhaul (with ability to do sub-forums and such), this will be a fine place.

As for the links, I think it would make sense to simply transplant these links, with credit to Blackbone and others of course, to the sticky thread arcaneCoder made about making games. When we’re ready to do so I’ll be happy to make that switch over. Until then, I do want some developers to weigh in on what is and isn’t worth linking. Specifically, how many of those art tools are useful for Flash games, and which of the tutorial sites have up-to-date and valid information. A small one-sentence description for each tutorial site would also be nice, though not required.

EDIT: This is Phoenix00017. I just realized I was logged in as my alt when posting that. Sorry for any confusion.
