Topic: Game Programming / Are there any errors in this C# Script?

Your question lacks context and you should read this post for everyone’s sake http://www.kongregate.com/forums/4-game-programming/topics/39889-proper-forum-code-formatting-guide

Topic: Game Programming / Apparently "Saga" is Trademarked

Cola at the time wasn’t trademarked because some countries (like Portugal) use that word on a near daily basis, trademarking words, even if in specific contexts should first be studied in that context, “candy” and “saga” are both commonly used words in naming games therefore they should both have been considered non-trademarkable now, if they were to trademark exactly “Candy Crush Saga” that’d be fine, because it is their game.

The way it is right now just makes them be trademark trolls who will end up being sued for abuse and die before zynga even thinks about copying them

Candy was trademarked yesterday by the same guys, not all countries have approved of it yet, but they are already filling lawsuits against games with Candy on their name, such BS

Topic: Game Programming / Developer Chat

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/irc/ this IRC channel always has people in it, who tend to be very helpful or at least discuss interesting stuff

http://devsofa.cc/ is quite a helpful website if you want to keep a project secret but still keep some people up to date on your progress, it also has an IRC which is somewhat active but gets lots of silence at times :P https://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#devsofa

then you have twitter which I know it’s not a chat room but I believe the major and most interesting talks are done here. Check out the people I follow here https://twitter.com/kewry_dev/following they are mostly indie game devs, gaming journalists or entertainers linked to this scene.

Some interesting people I recommend to follow on twitter, which nearly always reply to any conversation you may attempt to start with them:

https://twitter.com/kmacleod Music composer for the http://incompetech.com/
https://twitter.com/charlesrandall ex-microsoft engineer, worked on multiple AAA games such as Assassin’s Creed 2
https://twitter.com/PaulTassi the only TRUE gaming journalist imo
https://twitter.com/CPriestman this journalist will gladly throw in an amazing article about your games if they’re good enough
https://twitter.com/gamedevtuts randomly throws in articles from their website (sometimes others) with nice explanations of “How to”
https://twitter.com/Aaants you should all know Aaants the great Sensei :P
https://twitter.com/McFunkypants this guy is the indie master ready to any attempt to bring positivity and brainstorming in all subjects

I’ll add in a few more later if anyone is interested.

Topic: Game Programming / What do you think?

Zombie game is too broad of a subject, it’s the same as saying “What should a ponies game have?” but in the end…

Will it be a 2D or 3D game?
Do you have a genre in mind?
I advice checking for commonly used genres, survival is becoming extremely popular with the DayZ
Do you intend to have Zombie killing or simply “run away”?
Do you intend to have mutated zombies?

Also a great theme! which fits your thought process.

Mercen(ary)(aries) – I like this a lot
Path(s) and Stash – sound really similar to previous themes (Explore/Collect)

I like Free-play assuming it means parkour/ballerina stuff, endless levels and sandbox, am I missing something or wrongly interpreting this??

I also like puzzle, would love to try and incorporate this on a platformer.

Something I’ve been thinking of probably won’t be considered a theme, but I would love a 5 Mechanics being these things the dev as never done before and he’d state them in the game so everyone knows about it, if not a theme could be a challenge to make things a bit more interesting for a few, completely skippable ofc

Other themes:
Saucer
Food
Minions – Despicable Me influence >.<

Play around with the lights, it seems they aren’t affecting the left side, also why flip instead of rotating the object 180º ?

Topic: Game Programming / What does this mean? (Event subclasses)

yep, you must have it every time the parent of a subclass needs parameters, you can only have it once and you mustn’t use variables/functions of the parent class before calling the super(), it tends to break stuff

Flag Post

Topic: Game Programming / What does this mean? (Event subclasses)

super gives the parent class(Event) parameters in the constructor, which is the case of type:String

You can also use super.toString() this would ignore your overridden toString() function and use the parent default one, so super.my_function to access those overridden functions

Topic: Game Programming / GiTD [#33] Exploration! (225 Kred prize)

@Beave2111: You can use any format but something playable through a web browser is the best choice

@Unept: don’t quote me on this but I believe you are free to use any graphical and sound assets, you can’t use code of an already existing game but using libraries is fine

Thanks for the prize Solsound!

And I’m fine with you joining Mossy, the more the merrier :D

I guess the right answer would be both, having a main storyline and a few side ones which the player may or may not want to follow

Ouroboros has an issue which is most people will simply try to input the symbol of a reptile biting it’s tail while ignoring it’s meaning (saw it happen in a random jam some time ago)

Aftermath sounds pretty coo

Chimera sounds interesting, but wouldn’t Genetics be a bigger part than this?

Kaleidoscope although it’s generation interests me, I don’t think this would be interesting for a jam

Music | Cards – I feel like these 2 are completely out of question, music would just make me do something for Es337 which I don’t have the knowledge to achieve yet and cards although I have a plan for them it’s not something doable in 10 days, specially since it calls out for some art

Sandbox – I have no idea how to make something like this fun
Hallucinations/Confusion – great idea but is it viable for GiTD?
Genesis/Rebirth – I like this not sure what I’d do but I like it

Apocalypse | Escape – will these cause a lot of similar games?

Repair – I have no opinion on this even though it’s the game with most ideas in these themes I have
Timed – I like this quite a lot, it might bring a lot of similar games too but being the limitation “time” I don’t think it matters that much

I agree with UG Illumination should be cut out simply because of it’s past success rate
