Wait, why are we relating Christianity to child abuse? Are you saying the Christians support child abuse, or what?

Topic: Serious Discussion / New American Welfare plan: free government cellphones

Actually, cell phones pretty much are necessary to get a job. Maybe not a regular, well-paying, constant job. But for food services and other part-time jobs, they are a must.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Why are people still religious?

Eh…
First of all, part of the reason I am Christian comes from faith, but not all of it.

Christianity was not made up to explain the supernatural. How would it be? What does it try to explain?

Just throwing this out there, the church does not believe sex is inappropriate. It’s context that’s important.

I wonder what George Washington would have said about this.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Is there a single good argument for free will?

Since my last post was ignored, I’d like to make another point.

If free will is defined as being able to do whatever we want, then we don’t have free will. We are subject to laws such as gravity, etc.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Catamenial Epilepsy (Educated Opinion Needed)

About a month ago, the girl in front of me in history started making strange choking-like noises. As the rest of the class stared, her eyes grew huge and she collapsed to the floor. Naturally, all scared to death, we assumed our classmate was soon to be six feet under. It turns out, she had a seizure. Her license was suspended for six months, she was horribly fatigued for several days thereafter, and she suffered horrible headaches. Soon enough though, things were back to normal.

Then the same thing happened yesterday.

A friend mentioned to me that she sometimes suffers fainting during her menstrual cycle, and perhaps the girl was suffering the same sort of thing. After asking Dr. Google, I realized there’s actually a name for this sort of thing – Catamenial Epilepsy.

Does anyone know anything about this disease? Can you guys decipher the technological garble enough to tell me if it’s possible? Is it possible to have this disease although not having a seizure until age sixteen?

(Please note, this may be inappropriate as it is not a “discussion” per say, but just a question that I open up to all educated members of this community)

Topic: Serious Discussion / Is there a single good argument for free will?

I’m going to give my “Christian” opinion.

If you’re asking why free will exists, I would say that our purpose in life is to glory God, and our voluntary praise/love is undoubtedly more valuable than involuntary praise/love.

As far as the existence of free will, I point to Scripture: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” and “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:9,33)

Topic: Serious Discussion / Financial Focus

That said, I can fully understand new R&D defense projects, manufacturing of planes, missiles, et al, as an effort to try and increase spending in a cash-strapped country with its economy in the toilet. Sending money overseas accomplishes none of the same goals.

You’re right, the same goes for the United States. We couldn’t even afford to have any city fireworks this year.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Financial Focus

I failed to find a topic on this subject.

This morning, I woke up and found this article on Yahoo’s homepage. Please note that I’m certainly not condemning humankind’s advances in the area of science and technology, but I wonder if we’re focusing our money in the right place. As we’re building fighter jets and missiles, there are still millions of people dying around the world from a lack of basic necessities.

I’m not about to send us on a guilt-trip about dying children in Africa, but I do ask you o consider the fact that the amount of starving people in the world is greater than the populations of the United States, Canada, and the European Union combined.

Please note that we are growing in our amounts of giving (The US gives about $24 billion annually) but I wonder if we should consider giving even more. What are your opinions?

Topic: Serious Discussion / Biased Slanting: Good or Bad?

Like everyone already said, a bias in the news is nothing new. But, for the most part, it’s easy to discern fact from fiction, in my opinion.

Take for example the attack on September 11th, 2001. The news said that two planes had crashed into towers, and the towers had collapsed (an over-simplification). For proof, you had acres of rubble in downtown New York City, among them the wreckage of two planes. Those were the facts. A few days after the attacks, some news stations began broadcasting that it was all a plot by the government, or that our nation was under attack; where was the proof for this? Nowhere.

As far as a bias being presented in teh form of facts being left out, it’s rare to find two news stations that leave out the same facts. When I’m presented with a story that piques my interests, I double-check it with a few more news stations. fThe other night there was a story about a man who shot and killed his ex-wife at a Dairy Queen because of custody issues. But three more news stations confirmed that this was not true; in fact, there were no children involved!

Like hoodedone said, a bias is bad, but paranoia is even worse.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Third hand smoke. Your opinion on this danger.

I think it is dangerous, and just another reason why people who have kids should be banned from smoking around them at ANY time, inside or out.

That would be second-hand smoke. In the case of third-hand smoke, it doesn’t matter whether they are near their kids at the time or not.

Quick little story: My mother is painting this house, which until recently was owned by one smoker. She brought home pictures of when they took the pictures off the walls, and you can still see the little white boxes on the walls where they used to be. The rest of the room is this disgusting color. But after washing the walls, she feared being dismissed because all the walls needed was to be cleaned; they didn’t really need another coat of paint!

I’m sure that some of us have ridden in a smoker’s car, or been in a smoker’s home; the smell is awful. And like one of the articles said, the smell is your brain informing you that there are toxins in the room. Third-hand smoke is very REAL and very HARMFUL. That’s my opinion.

Meh, race doesn’t matter anymore, and it shouldn’t.

I don’t know; I just find it extremely awkward and, er, different the way that turned out.

Which laws?
I’m not trying to be difficult…

Topic: Serious Discussion / Enlightenment: Your Thoughts

1. omnipotence in the same dimension as your mind exists would not be possible anyway; you’re bound by the laws of physics surrounding you. Omnipotence over a sub, or lower layer, that’s another thing entirely.

Explain yourself.

2. google “Radical Life Extension” sometime. Whilst immortality may be beyond us for a while yet, living to 200 should be doable within out lifetimes. After that, well, let’s just see how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

I just looked it up, and found this. This was definitely the most articulate article I found, yet it contains no scientific back-up.
