Topic: Game Programming / Kongregate Multiplayer API
I’m not sure why this would be impossible for Kongregate. Nonoba has already been doing it for years, for free.
There’s also SmartFox, so Kongregate could even charge for server use (but this would mean Nonoba still beats it out, thus rendering Kongregate’s multiplayer API for-pay service less desirable and ultimately unused as a new standard). It’s in Kongregate’s interest to offer a free multiplayer solution to developers.
This all currently seems terribly behind its potential.
The goal should be a singular framework for all APIs (community, user stats, multiplayer, advertising, etc…) to set up the simplest, most accessible development pipeline for content creators, so that creators can get their content created, spending less time messing around with various separate services.
It seems like this would result in more time spent on putting quality into the actual game, more games produced and delivered, and more ad revenue generated. For the user-player, it will result in a more seamless, transparent and integrated gaming experience, yielding better potential for allegience to Kongregate as the ultimate Flash games resource online. For the industry, it could increase the potential that Kongregate is seen as the best place to watch for emerging indie game development from innovative developers.
And while all of that may be true, the question does come back to whether or not Kongregate can handle it. Kongregate, if you see this— weigh in? Any plans? Why couldn’t you do what Nonoba already does and offers to developers?
