Topic: Game Programming / Do you have, or know of an open source finished AS3 game in flashDevelop

Online code repositories like github are a good place to look for opensource projects. Here’s one I found just by searching “game” in Actionscript repositories: http://github.com/jakevsrobots/I-Can-Hold-My-Breath-Forever

If you’re looking for something more specific you can search for things like “platformer” or “fighter” and get some good results.

Basically the player isn’t tile based, but everything else is, thats why I cant do it that way.

You work out what tiles the player is occupying based on his position and just hit test the surrounding ones.

Can air do text files as well as XML files?

It can write any file.

And, why?

I presume so that people could moderate their own threads rather than having to wait for staff, and so that you can have threads with your own rules (for example, if you have a contest thread that you want people to only post submissions in, it’s nearly impossible to stop users replying with comments and stuff, no matter how big you put SUBMISSIONS ONLY, LEAVE DISCUSSION IN ANOTHER THREAD in the op).

Of course, as others have said it would just get used to make people look silly, delete posts that didn’t agree with you etc.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare something you’ve been using for years to a new product like that.

unknown, pure actionscript, not mxmlc or whatever it is

You can still use the SWF meta tag in pure actionscript projects.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Should Pot Be Legal?

I don’t know if there are many people here from the UK, but do you think our government are heading towards banning tobacco and alcohol? I’ve often thought that the current classification system makes no sense, and that for consistency they should either ban alcohol and tobacco or legalise cannabis and the other less harmful drugs. I’d always hoped for the latter, but in the last few years they’ve been introducing more and more restrictive laws like the indoor smoking ban, raising the legal age to purchase tobacco, restrictions to the times you can purchase alcohol, talks on banning certain brands of alcohol etc etc.

I think the only reason they’re not completely banning smoking right now is because they’re scared of losing a huge amount of votes, but the number of people who smoke has been decreasing quite rapidly (from 80% of the population in the 50’s to less than 20% today) so I could definitely see a ban happening within the next 20 years as the percentage of people smoking goes below, say, 5.

Topic: Game Programming / Copyright

I think it’s probably a myth, but copyright law is fairly complicated and varies between different countries so you’d have to ask a local lawyer to get a definitive answer. I’d err on the side of caution and not use a sample of any length unless I was sure I had permission to do so.

From what I’ve read haXe can use the Alchemy opcodes, so you get the speed increase without the hassle of having to work in two different languages/environments.

Topic: Collaborations / I need short reviews of a tutorial

The scrolling is pretty bad. Also, the first slide says that it’s aimed at helping you get started with programming in Flash, yet later on you assume quite a bit of previous knowledge. You tell the user to “set the frame rate to 30” and “make a textfield” with no explanation of how. The programming side is even worse, you just tell the user to copy and paste a huge amount of code with very little in the way of explanation. If I was just starting out, I could probably finish the guide (with a lot of working things out on my own) but I don’t think I would feel like I’d learnt anything.

Developers would be deleting all negative comments and muting users that disagree with them just to make their game look better, like this.

EDIT: Somebody should make a better and more efficient FP than adobes’ for Linux!

They’re trying, but I hear development’s pretty slow because Adobe’s specifications are really badly documented or something, meaning they’re having to do a lot of reverse engineering and stuff. http://www.gnashdev.org/

Developers being able to moderate their own comments has been raised several times, but censorship issues mean it’s never likely to happen.

Not really. As you can see his example only has one more line, hardly “much more code”.

You’re going to have to explain more clearly what you’re doing. You seem to Be using a strange comBination of the display list and the Bitmap draw methods.

Topic: Game Programming / Better hittest???[One last thing, just please answer!]

What do you mean it’s a bad hit test? Was it too slow, not accurate enough or could you just not get it working? DPbrad seems to have unnecessarily complicated things, the pixel perfect collision should work something like:

// i hear clip events are for women and gays btw
onClipEvent(enterFrame){

    if(CollisionDetection.checkForCollision(_root.dude, _root.wall){
        // so are frames
        _root.gotoAndPlay(2);
    }

    // the rest of your game loop

}

Topic: Game Programming / AS3 - Waypoint System Features

I’d like to see the option to have the object either follow all way points and stop once it reaches the end, follow all way points and turn around once it reaches the end and follows the waypoints backwards or to follow all the waypoints and head straight for the starting position once it reaches the end so it loops round. Preferably also with the option to specify how long it will loop for for the latter two options.

Topic: Game Programming / Using external files in Flash

I think you’re looking for the Kongregate Content Sharing API, look for it in the Developers section. If you want something more specific to your game you could look into hosting a file elsewhere, but that’ll be quite a bit more complicated and possibly cost you money.

Topic: Game Programming / [AS3] Bound Methods and Bound Functions

Just wanted to let you know I read this. I feel not enough people post interesting tidbits like this because they always get no replies, which can make it seem like no one really cares.

I’m wondering though, in what kind of situation would I ever need to do something like this?

(also, I think you’re missing a static in the second class b)
