Topic: Kongregate / Suggestion: Accepting hackers to fix highscore issues

A lot of these “hackers” could be taken care of by using an https connection instead. Right now I can load the software that I use for seeing what traffic my game is sending (generally use this during development), read the request being sent, replicate the format and send a similar request to the kongregate server. Would probably take +- 5 minutes to do.

For everyone that says “make the games test for weird results” or so, this is something that’s all fine and dandy, but doesn’t even get close to fixing the problem. Stop saying that developers should fix this, we can’t. It’s a problem that Kongregate has to solve (although involving developers might be an option).

If you want a solution other than “encrypt the traffic”, here’s a go at it.
After x amount of highscore submits (has to be a rather significant amount) it’s probably possible to write an algorithm that checks for weird highscore submissions. If such a anomaly is found the developer could be notified and he could then remove the highscore. This would however require Kongregate to give devs the option to remove highscores and require them to build the system. Both are probably quite expensive and not worth their time though.

Topic: Game Design / Flash games with good stories

Shameless self promotion here, but for a reason. Since you’re doing research, I’ll just take the liberty that Unity games are also accepted (if not, ignore the rest of this post).

The game we made for LD26 is completely focused on narrative, and over the last week it has gotten quite a bit of praise (from some very important people in the industry) for its story and the topic we try to tackle. While we do use 3D, I feel that the entire game would’ve worked just as well if we stuck to a more traditional Point & Click (in a 2D space).

Topic: Kongregate / How many developers make games exclusively for Kongregate?

Since Kongregate is the only site that accepts Unity (and has a large audience), I do.

It’s roughly $1 per 1000 views, they might not even bother updating the few cents at this point.

Topic: Kongregate APIs / User comments on game

I like to interact with people that play my game, but I find it a hassle to go to my game and then check if someone posted anything (and if a lot of comments were posted, it’s yet another action to see all the comments).

Is there a possibility to grab all these comments via an API call? It would help a lot of I could just write my own script that fetches the comment list so that I can format them myself.

Very interesting concept here, how did you handle the client → server → client side? Is there Node.js running on the server? Or good ‘ol PHP (or Python, if that’s your thing)?

Topic: Kongregate / Is Kongregate as we know it dead?

One of the problems is that most indie devs cannot generate enough revenue from releasing new titles all the time. Releasing version 2/3/4/n is an easy way to generate some form of revenue for a relatively low amount of work.

If us devs want to compensate, we need to start pushing out games that might not be of the highest quality, but get the bills paid (sadly, landlords do not prefer awesome games over money). It’s not just the devs, it’s also the community that would need to change. Love a game? Spread the word, donate or just leave some loving words.

Officially we should be 2nd, we actually bothered to take screenshots at the time the contest ended. But we’re still waiting for the offical result before we go out and have a beer to celebrate.

I sent a message yesterday regarding the state of this to Kongregate. When I get a response I will send you a message as well.
Congratulations on getting #1st place!

Topic: Kongregate / Kongregate sponsorships

I haven’t applied for a sponsorship yet (although I’m planning to within a month or so). What I suggest you do is either join a developer community and put it on your personal website. Make sure you require a password for the page so that only chosen people can access it.

If that’s not an option you only have 1 way to go, have your friends play it. The downside is that they’re always biased, even when they say they’re not, but if you just let them play while you stand behind them, you can still gather valuable feedback regarding gameplay and controls.

Best of luck!

Topic: Kongregate / Ludum Dare Contest uploading fixes

Thanks for the response!

In the rules it also doesn’t say anything regarding uploading new features, although the original Ludum Dare is quite clear on the rules regarding uploading new things. What’s the word on that?

Topic: Kongregate / Ludum Dare Contest uploading fixes

I’m just wondering what the rules are regarding the uploading of fixes. In the original LD contests you are allowed to only upload critical fixes (game breaking bugs & crashes). But I can’t find anything on the official rules on the Kongregate Ludem Dare contest regarding this.

I want to add a few minor things such as a smaller window (we never intended to join up here, so our final version is way too big for the kongregate site) and a few other minor things. All of those aren’t exactly game breaking (although I could argue that it’s kinda game breaking if the game is too large), but I don’t want to be disqualified for doing this.

I’ve sent a message to Kongregate already, but I like to respond to requests/bugs/etc. quickly when they’re reported by players. Can anyone from Kongregate or any of the other participants in the LD competition give me word on this?

Topic: Game Programming / [Rant] 10 Reasons Why I Dislike Unity (as a Developer)

Am I the only one who set up Notepad++ for Unity?
I agree that MonoDevelop is a piece of shit, but 1 google would give you at least a dozen of different options (one probably being your favorite editor).

And yes 2D things are horrible, because it’s a 3D engine. As for GUI, use the built in GUI stuff. It’s far from perfect, but actually does the job pretty well. Took me a while to get used to, but after spending an afternoon properly using it, you kinda get used to it (Also, GUI stuff calculates everything from top-right, like it should).
