Topic: Game Design / Complex games...

So as we all know it, Kongregate’s audience is for the most part composed of casual players who want to beat things till they die for 5 minutes and then move on to something else.

Am kinda tired of working on stuff like that and I want to try something different for once, some thing with deep and complex gameplay.
But you know how it is, you dont want to sink X days of your on a project that only 10 persons will actually play for more than 5 minutes.

So I was wondering, are there and good, deep, complex, games around here that got decent attention?

Topic: Game Programming / State of Unity games on Kongregate

Yeah, Kongregate handles .swf files and, if am not mistaken, exporting to flash would result in an swf anyway.

Only possible way for it not working is probably the API calls, but you could just do AS calls for it and it should do.

Didn’t want to switch to 3.5 yet since it kills some of my code and it would be a pain to upgrade it. (first time working on a project this big, it’s hell of a mess)

Thanks for the insight anyway, a rate of 60% is better than what I expected, tbh. :D

Topic: Game Programming / State of Unity games on Kongregate

Hello everyone.
I am working on a major project on Unity, some nice stuff. But, as you fellow developers probably know (too well), sometimes you just feel like doing something else, working on a side project just to not reach that burn-out phase too easily.
I have a couple of minor “fun projects”, but, being a regular player here on kong, I thought that it would be nice to add a little to the community by making a small spin-off of my main project and upload it here.
Problem is, as opposed to flash, people can’t directly play Unity player games unless they install the web player, and I have seen far too many persons just switch off to another game when discovering that they can’t play yours without first installing something.
So what I was wondering, and it would be pretty cool if I had an answer from another person with a Unity game here. Just to know if I might spend some months working on something only to see a couple of persons playing it.

Thanks in advance. :D

Topic: Game Programming / Procedural Generation? (Roguelike maps)

Nice to see someone else working on a roguelike.
I have a bit of experience on that field, so I will annoy you with some nub advices.

1-What kind of generation you want? Procedural generation is different than simple random dungeon generation. Since the simple one makes a map when asked, and the procedural one makes it on the go, when the x of the char reaches a certain point, for example.

2-I guess you already know this, but the heaven for these questions is the RogueBasin Wiki
I used this example as a base for my AS3 code since java is relatively close to it. You can drop me questions if you want (though, I had a funny bug that, irnoically, made my maps look exactly the way I would have wanted them to)

Drop a question if you feel stuck or anything, I think I can help a bit with this (though my exp with AS3 is kinda low)

Topic: Game Programming / Suggestions

k, so hello.

First thing first, I thank you guys for all the helpful insights you give me everytime am stuck or in need of advice.
Second, I have been spending some time on the programming forums, now, and I noticed that 75% of the questions asked are nearly redundant. “How do I save?”, “How do I attach a movie in AS3?” and such.
I think it would be best to add a new sticky thread and put sort of a faq in it. It would make accessing the answers easier and helping in the forums more effiecient.

Topic: Game Programming / Is making unique games profitable?

This thread is depressing…

You know, I spend hours on kong while I still got Dragon Age, Borderlands, and Mass Effect to finish on this comp. But I come here simply because most games are innovative, fun, or just simply great.
I spend more time playing roguelikes than AAA games, and that’s maybe because am one of those old gamers who got tired of the stupid “bling bling games” trend.
But, honestly, a profitable game is a good game. If you are here JUST for the money, then you are an entrepreneur, and capitalist bastards make money, not games.
SO, get out of my kong, Bobby Kotick.

Topic: Game Programming / still having trouble on tile based game movement

if my tiles are like this:

AB
CD

and the character is on the C tile, I check for the D if he wants to move right, the A if he wants to move up, and the B if he wants to move diagonally. Is that what you did?

stupid question, I know.

The character has become one of the world’s most famous movie icons and, as such, has transcended the medium, appearing in other works outside of films, such as a cartoon series, books, comics, various merchandise and paraphernalia, video games, theme park rides, and even an upcoming stage play. His role in the different narratives varies from source to source, ranging from rampaging monster to tragic antihero. The rights to the character are currently held by Universal Studios, with limited rights held by the estate of Merian C. Cooper, and perhaps certain rights in the public domain.

Topic: Game Programming / {AS3}Just asking for advice on structure

Thanks for the input, guys. It really gives me different pathes to take, I will see what I can do with it (just came home from damn univ).
But yeah, I think I will go thepeasant’s path with two bitmaps, it sounds pretty easy and not so cpu expensive. Am using (for now) a rather simplistic field of vision method which “lightens” only the room or corridor the player is in, so I guess it will work together pretty well.
Thanks again :D

Topic: Game Programming / {AS3}Just asking for advice on structure

sorry for the late answer, was busy.

I kinda worry about efficiency since I have to compute field of vision every turn, it’s extremely costly in terms of CPU, and that’s just one thing, am not talking about path finding, monster AI, and the rest.
Field of vision for example would be a bit easier if I could have something like flags for tiles that block light.
Or monster Ai could be easier if I had an array that contains item positions, it would be better for a monster to check the nearest item rather than checking the entire map in search of a tile containing an item.

But that’s just my theory about it, anyway, you guyes are more experienced than me so your advices are important (they are even if you weren’t more experienced :P)

and, @thepeasant: my map kinda looks like this

kinda scary to think that each one of these tiles is a class with it’s own variable, scrolling would probably fry the CPU, imho.

Topic: Game Programming / Theory and ideas for Grid RPGs

One thing I like doing in RPGs (maybe not everyone is okay with it, but I love it) is grinding to get the best equips on the game. I like killing the same things again and again if it’s worth it. So one thing you really should do is making it possible. Not just following the storyline and fighting where I have to isn’t satisfying.
FFTactics for example allowed those secondary jobs and guild fights, it was soo cool I spent hours on it. I don’t think it’s too hard to code a random map generator (heck I finished making one yesterday) and implement random missions with those places (à la FFTactics).
It would boost the game’s life-time drastically.
