Topic: Kongregate / Chat Rooms that will be Closing on Nov. 3

hey, sorry to bring up an old topic… but my room has been inundated with noobs at a higher rate since you closed these other rooms. i get it, it makes sense, chat is moving towards game centric rather than general room centric (which really seems like social centric gaming is losing the battle on this site to gaming centric social, but that’s a completely different topic).

my point is that you should filter all noobs into noob specific rooms and let them navigate themselves out of the noob rooms. if one wanted to restrict level 1’s for the purpose of filtering out like 60% of trolling, then you could put a level 2 requirement on it. this might even have the effect of showing noobs how annoying it is to be with noobs and they can cut their teeth in junior rooms before jumping into rooms with established regularships. plus kong could select some users who specialize in dealing with noobs to moderate these rooms. think of it like classrooms, if you will.

/shooting from the hip; haven’t really thought this out, but i imagine it will receive the usual distribution of replies. :p

Topic: Kongregate / why did new games get harder to find?

it’s no longer in the games drop-down (am I in a split test? i don’t want to be) and I kind of have to click three or four things to get there (go to games, sort by newest)

besides my brains, am i missing something?

I am still curious how you get responses from people who do not talk.

Just because someone doesn’t want to have a conversation doesn’t mean they’re completely unwilling to interact with the site. Clicking a star rating is pretty low-impact. Their goal might not be to see the chat again, but just a willingness to share their opinion.

While that is true, I just don’t really understand how you get any useful information from most of these split tests.

Yes, you will undoubtedly get more ratings per game, but that is because you are telling people that aren’t aware of it “Hey! we have a rating system, try it!” I just think that if you are going to make changes like this, don’t make them split tests, just give them to everyone.

If you want to do split tests, try two different changes to encourage rating at th same time, and do a split test that way. Should be pretty simple to see which is more popular.

that would be silly.

generally, the point of a split test is that you split some people off (group B) from the norm (control group – group A). this tells you the effectiveness of a split test. if you compare two different things without a baseline, then you’re comparing group B vs group C with no understanding how it’s different from your control group (group A)

google split testing if you want to verify this.

btw, in this test, they would be able to tell a few things: do more or less people rate the game? how quickly do they rate the game from the point of starting it? do they rate the game lower/higher/the same? (all vs group A) from this, they can tell if this feature makes sense

the problem with split testing and generating feature choices from telemetry is that often developers don’t understand the true effects of their changes. there are lots of developers that can tell you what the behavior patterns are for players who play their game, but they have no idea why (for example, in a pretend freemium game, users who play for more than an hour are likely to be still playing in two weeks and is 10% likely to spend $20 – the devs have no idea why, but they just know this information correlates to the numbers). imho, this kind of development sucks, and sacrifices the user experience for numbers (hello zynga).

telemetry is great, but only if used well.

Topic: Kongregate / How do you think this site has changed in the last 3 years

Generally this, plus a couple more things.

All the games suck lately. The rate of good flash games have nearly stopped. Many decent devs have taken to IOS and Android. There’s typically too little money in developing flash games and putting them up on kongregate. (Thus we see Kong push the games that do generate users/money/income – these are the shitty freemium games that most people hate)

Kongregate’s decision making is very much make-money-first. Lately, this seems to be at the expense of the user. This is prevalent in all their decision making and affects how the site has changed. Glad to see someone finally agrees with me on this stupid pop-up / hover-over shit that plagues the site.

Kong has fully entered the state of user-clueless and business-first. This is also evidenced by how Kong staff (rarely) replies to users on the forum. Great companies often have a consistent back-and-forth with their users. Kong staff are often quiet on community issues.

Kong: “Hey, we’re doing split tests!”
Community: “We hate what you’re doing, please change.”
Kong: (silence)

Actually, this is probably the exact effect that they were going for—they want you to have to look around to find things. Why? Because they want you to explore the site and visit pages and games that you don’t normally visit, and having to look around more has that effect.

A very similar example is where large grocery stores and department stores will move all of their items around every couple of months or so—their goal is to try to get you to look at everything in the store, instead of just going directly to the items that you know you need.

The navigation bar is basically “window shopping” for the larger Kongregate site—and the more time you spend window shopping, the more things you’ll find that interest you, and the more time you’ll spend on the site.

(This also probably has something to do with the general site updates every few months even when nothing appears to need updating—the mere act of updating causes people to step back and take in more of the site instead of just being in the routine of mindlessly clicking links.)

I didn’t see this reply, but now that I do, it seems incredibly incorrect and short sighted. That, and the examples aren’t really relevant to each other. But, let’s take a look.

You really want me to look harder to find things? What if I can’t find it? Then I don’t find it. Then I don’t use it. Good planning… See, in a grocery store, you don’t really leave. You’re already there – physically. And if you miss an item, you either go back later, or probably check another store (which you might discover that you like better). Kong is a website… if it’s annoying to use (ask anyone who makes websites how good it is to have a website where you can’t find anything…)…. If you can’t find what you want on a website, you go to other websites. Not being able to find stuff would lead people to having a bad experience and going to… places like AG.

Have a look at your favorite sites… do they move things around just to make you look around for them? Grocery stores rarely move sections around… just products within sections (someone moved the cornflakes down the aisle?). The produce is where the produce is. The deli is where the deli is. What you’re talking aboot is more like “this is the featured item of the day, look at these deals.”

Get my point yet? Am I misunderstanding your reply?

Topic: Kongregate / [New Feature] Introducing Kongpanions!

are there limitations to how these can be used in games? could a dev lock levels unless you have certain kongpanions? i’m just really wondering aboot the validity of these things, and if they are some kinda gimmick that 99.9% of devs will ignore.

i already no longer like badges (they’ve gone downhill significantly in the last 2 years in terms of quality and quantity, i’ve posted numbers that show this) and i really don’t feel like collecting them, but if games are going to require kongpanions for full access, to be able to beat, etc, then that sucks.

that is my concern

Condense things. A recurring trend I see on a lot of changes is you put very few things in such big space. I rarely have much issue with what you actually add, its just the end product looks so unprofessionally done. Like it was rushed at the last minute.

Make that gray box as small as possible while still having everything in it. You don’t even really need to add or remove things(other than obvious forum links).

See, I really like the look of it spaced out. The fact that we don’t have a ton of text packed into a small space makes it a lot easier to read, and I say that as a guy with rather poor vision.

I’m not part of this split, so I’m going by the screen shots on this first page, but it occurs to me that the ‘recently played’ link is missing from the new ‘games tab’, some others are missing too, but the recently played one is actually a quite useful one. I’d love to see that one make a reappearance, this shouldn’t be hard to achieve, since as pointed out before me, there is an awful lot of open space on that tab.

It’s still there! There’s a list of recently played games just right of center in the Games tab, and the words “Recently played” are a link to your recently played games. :)

No one cares what you like :P It’s what everyone thinks that matters… (i hope you appreciate my tongue in cheek comment).

What i have said 3 times is to make the appearance and organization between all 3 consistent. I don’t know why this is hard to understand. They should all format similarly, not opposite of each other. Notice how the layout of Games and Achievements are flipped? images on opposite sides, link clusters on opposite sides. It makes it hard to remember the layout, and it makes it so the user has to use their eyes to find what they are looking for. Don’t believe me? Look up any UI design reference.
