Actually, this is probably the exact effect that they were going for—they want you to have to look around to find things. Why? Because they want you to explore the site and visit pages and games that you don’t normally visit, and having to look around more has that effect.

A very similar example is where large grocery stores and department stores will move all of their items around every couple of months or so—their goal is to try to get you to look at everything in the store, instead of just going directly to the items that you know you need.

The navigation bar is basically “window shopping” for the larger Kongregate site—and the more time you spend window shopping, the more things you’ll find that interest you, and the more time you’ll spend on the site.

(This also probably has something to do with the general site updates every few months even when nothing appears to need updating—the mere act of updating causes people to step back and take in more of the site instead of just being in the routine of mindlessly clicking links.)

I didn’t see this reply, but now that I do, it seems incredibly incorrect and short sighted. That, and the examples aren’t really relevant to each other. But, let’s take a look.

You really want me to look harder to find things? What if I can’t find it? Then I don’t find it. Then I don’t use it. Good planning… See, in a grocery store, you don’t really leave. You’re already there – physically. And if you miss an item, you either go back later, or probably check another store (which you might discover that you like better). Kong is a website… if it’s annoying to use (ask anyone who makes websites how good it is to have a website where you can’t find anything…)…. If you can’t find what you want on a website, you go to other websites. Not being able to find stuff would lead people to having a bad experience and going to… places like AG.

Have a look at your favorite sites… do they move things around just to make you look around for them? Grocery stores rarely move sections around… just products within sections (someone moved the cornflakes down the aisle?). The produce is where the produce is. The deli is where the deli is. What you’re talking aboot is more like “this is the featured item of the day, look at these deals.”

Get my point yet? Am I misunderstanding your reply?

Topic: Kongregate / [New Feature] Introducing Kongpanions!

are there limitations to how these can be used in games? could a dev lock levels unless you have certain kongpanions? i’m just really wondering aboot the validity of these things, and if they are some kinda gimmick that 99.9% of devs will ignore.

i already no longer like badges (they’ve gone downhill significantly in the last 2 years in terms of quality and quantity, i’ve posted numbers that show this) and i really don’t feel like collecting them, but if games are going to require kongpanions for full access, to be able to beat, etc, then that sucks.

that is my concern

Condense things. A recurring trend I see on a lot of changes is you put very few things in such big space. I rarely have much issue with what you actually add, its just the end product looks so unprofessionally done. Like it was rushed at the last minute.

Make that gray box as small as possible while still having everything in it. You don’t even really need to add or remove things(other than obvious forum links).

See, I really like the look of it spaced out. The fact that we don’t have a ton of text packed into a small space makes it a lot easier to read, and I say that as a guy with rather poor vision.

I’m not part of this split, so I’m going by the screen shots on this first page, but it occurs to me that the ‘recently played’ link is missing from the new ‘games tab’, some others are missing too, but the recently played one is actually a quite useful one. I’d love to see that one make a reappearance, this shouldn’t be hard to achieve, since as pointed out before me, there is an awful lot of open space on that tab.

It’s still there! There’s a list of recently played games just right of center in the Games tab, and the words “Recently played” are a link to your recently played games. :)

No one cares what you like :P It’s what everyone thinks that matters… (i hope you appreciate my tongue in cheek comment).

What i have said 3 times is to make the appearance and organization between all 3 consistent. I don’t know why this is hard to understand. They should all format similarly, not opposite of each other. Notice how the layout of Games and Achievements are flipped? images on opposite sides, link clusters on opposite sides. It makes it hard to remember the layout, and it makes it so the user has to use their eyes to find what they are looking for. Don’t believe me? Look up any UI design reference.

fix the layout, ffs. how can you not see that it’s extremely poor?

/can’t believe i had to link to my own locked threads… kongregate gets worse and worse every day. if it wasn’t for my friendships on this site, i’d not come back.

they really should be involved, and leading the charge, exemplifying the user behaviour they are after.

Topic: Kongregate / split test : new navigation - make it consistent

kong,

can you please make the new navigation consistent in how it appears?

in Games, the pictures are to the right.
in Achievements, the pictures are to the left.
in My Kong, it’s even more screwed up.

can you please make all the similar/hyperlinky sections (Featured/Categories, Badges/Quests, Forums, respectively) so they appear on the same side?

thanks,
wattro

how could anyone even post an insightful comment in this thread pertaining to the split test. it’d just get lost in this sea of unrelated babble.

sicmirc, what do you think? you want to moderate kongregate forums and suggest i post in this thread instead of making a new one? well, moderate this thread so that it’s somewhat useful for someone to post a relevant piece of feedback, and not have it lost in the sea of inanity.

Seriously, hire a UX designer, Kong (actually, don’t. they usually don’t have a fucking clue what a good UX is).

I think the average person with minimal computer experience would be a better ux designer.

I do wonder if the person who is in charge of making this stuff actually uses kong like a normal user would. I highly doubt it, or else they would not constantly make changes like this.

I’ve worked on AAA titles and I see people making the same mistakes.

I actually want to opt out of split tests just so i can get the old functionality back, and enjoy it for as long as until kong decides the split test is a success. Can any admin/kong staffer justify this change? All that was done is some some larger images were added and large blocks of data (that already exists on the screen in a nice condensed space!) that no one seems to have asked for.

as someone in the split test… go back to what it was like before. it’s been a few days and i still can’t find things, yet.

ps: the admins hardly ever communicate with the community. they will just use stats to say that this split test has increased usage in some social feature they care aboot and approve it.

if they really wanted to be smart, i’d just load up the $ freemium games on the new navigation hover menus and see the sheep herded towards those $ experiences. ca-ching!

i’m not liking it either. i don’t fully know why, yet. part of it is unfamiliarity. part of it is the options within each tab seem poorly organized, and counter-intuitive to what most users are expecting. for instance, i highlight achievements and where badges is… ‘all badges’ is in the bottom right corner – as far away from badges as it can be. also, the title ‘badges’ should hyperlink to all badges just as ‘recently badges games’ is a hyperlink.

and then the grey bar spans the entirety of the page – it doesn’t seem like a hover menu rather than changing the appearance of the page. so i don’t treat it like a hover menu when i look at the page. i think that’s throwing my mind off a bit, and so mentally i treat the expanded tab as something that it’s not. this is similar to the point frankiesmum made aboot the improvement being better on tablet than on pc.
