Flood runner 4 is fine. Not the best in the series, but good enough for badges. Bit surprised you only gave it 1, though.

Apparently the dev never got back to him about adding stats for anything but score.

I suppose he could have put in more than one score badge, though.

Yes, the Best of… quests are decided by rating for most of the games and the remaining games are voted on from a shortlist of high-rated games provided by Greg. There’s no nomination process, and besides, this sort of thing is done in January or February the year after to allow ratings to settle and Greg to get back from holidays: we won’t be seriously discussing the Best of 2014 list for another 9 or 10 months!

Any ideas what’s next?

You can definitely lose, the disasters pick up over time until things become unmanagable. I need to try again and see if I can work out an upgrade path more like my speed game. Somehow in my speed game I had a level 12 Nexus in ten minutes but in my Endless game I had 16 points by the time my remaining civilization had been drowned and shoved off the edge of the map.

Major Drift, Earthquake, Major Drift, Earthquake, Major Drift, Flood from all the water squares you’ve been using for your Nexuses thereby blocking even more squares for buildings, Earthquake…

Yes. On Newgrounds you could hypothetically badge a 72 minute recording of a fart noise, so long as you could get it past the blam process (you wouldn’t, but that’s not the point. The point is, Newgrounds badges mean nothing).

Pretentious Game 2 was all right. The badge did not award retroactively, but that was not an issue as I forgot I even beat it in the first place until the ending scene.

Exit path, did award retroactively so I don’t really have much to say on it. Seems that the hard was decided against, which is fine, but I’ll try to think of the other side, although I may or may not agree. Think of it this way: Puzzle games get hard badges for the people that enjoy playing them. Usually Greg pays no heed that it’ll be walkthroughable or already is, as that is not the point of badges. Likewise, Exit path’s badges should not have been made to cater around the people that used some kind of exploit. I am not sure how obvious, or what the background of the glitch or whatever it is, but it seems like a weak reason to not give it a badge because of that.

Edit: I guess I did have something to say…

Pretentious Game 2 does sort of reward retroactively: if you’ve beaten the game and haven’t started a new game since, hitting Continue will plop you back down on the final screen and reward the badge at once. If you have started a new game, your checkpoint will be wherever you left off, so if you start a New Game without continuing… Hopefully this post will warn someone before they start a New game without realizing.

I wouldn’t want Recommended Games to give me a game I have some of the badges from. I didn’t get those badges because I don’t care to play the game any more, after all! The recommended list is for games you haven’t played before – if you want to keep playing a game, use your Playlist. That’s what I use it for, in fact I’d go so far as to say that’s what it’s meant to be used for: for everyone who’s been “favouriting” games they want to go back to but don’t actually think of those games as “Favourites.”

Topic: Kongregate / Broken badges

But the Prince of Persia challenge wasn’t added automatically to people who already got the badge: they lost the badge, it was simply removed. I think they could get the challenge separately? But to do that you need the game to still be up, and we can’t throw up a points challenge for, say, Caesary, since it’s just plain gone. The only way to take down badges with the current infrastructure is to actually remove the badges from everyone who ever got them, ruining their effort.

Frankly I think all the badges need is a different tag, “listed” true/false, to remove the badge from the common listings and game page if it’s false and show it on profiles in all instances. But I guess that’s just not how things are built!

When the chat app announces you got the fifth BotD, I think it should say your Kongpanion’s been upgraded to shiny – it currently doesn’t say anything at all, I had to go to my profile to check that it had worked!

Topic: Kongregate / Kongpanions is a RIPOFF of poke'mans

Largely pointless but visually catchy collectable with a shiny variant, collected via achievements and site activity, and occasionally but largely not useful in games? No, that’s a rip off of Steam Cards.

Actually have steam cards actually appeared in a game yet? Kong might actually beat them to it.

Also, monster catching in Megami Tensei predates Dragon Quest, if we’re going to get into that (of course, Dragon Quest predates MT, it just didn’t have monster catching at first!). The point is, Pokemon’s gameplay was 11 years old by the time it actually began.

One thing that bugs me about the weekly list of BotDs is that any click on the bubble will cause the page to redirect, even a right click (just odd) or a middle click (to open a new tab – instead of opening a new tab, the current window will change). Since the widget doesn’t list game titles, I have to open the links to find out what the game even is, so blocking the ability to open multiple tabs was even more frustrating. Actually, now that I’ve said that out loud, putting the game titles in there would be useful, too.

Best of 2013 badge quest

My post here listed the top 10 games of the year as of the 10th, but since then several of the games that didn’t have badges have gotten them. Those badges showing up before the end of the year probably wasn’t a coincidence. Those games have probably lost rating points as a result (because rating always drops after a badge) so might not be in the top 10 any longer. I’d take a deeper look but I’ve got to head off, I’ll leave that for someone else!

I like most games so I’m almost never here to complain, but this time I actually do agree. Snail Bob’s still okay, but its big appeal to me from the beginning was experiencing new ways to solve a different kind of puzzle almost every level, even if they were never hard. Unlike a physics game that introduces new mechanics only three times after every 15 levels, Bob introduced a new platform, hid a switch in a new way, nearly every level. You can see it in 1 and 2 and it sort of peters off over time because who has so many ideas they can come up with nearly 25 whole new game mechanics every flash game, but this game has a lot less than 25. This game has 2. It has ice blocks and moving enemies, and even though moving enemies may be an innovation to Bob, they’re not to us, since we’ve sort of seen them since Pong. Frankly, the fact that Bob didn’t have moving enemies seemed innovative (also, they force you to rely on your precision control of Bob, which was never the point of these games to begin with).

The creators would be the ones with the data. I haven’t seen any publicly posted in years (not since Defender’s Quest and VVVVVV were talking about their demo-based models, so it’s not really relevant). You’d have to find a creator willing to share their numbers.

I’m trying to get the critical hit part of the badge – is it with the saws, or the machine gun, which gets a 2% critical hit upgrade along the line (or is it both – the saws give it first and the machine guns get a pathetic 2% chance later on?)?

I’m just going to highlight this bit. It’s true middle-clicking probably works but a lot of users are still going to use right-click, especially on a Mac, and not designing your site for basic tabbed browsing practices just shouldn’t stand these days.

Also going to agree that we need a link to the Current Challenges page, not the current-most challenge, unless you plan on dropping multiple challenges entirely? Since Challenges are a way of getting money and we have two competitions running at the same time this very moment, I can’t imagine that’s the case.

If Admin are reading this, why do you even bother to test new layouts now since as far as I can tell, you have always just gone on and changed the site regardless of any negative feedback??

Oh, that one’s easy. The point of the split test isn’t to test for approval, the point of the split test is to test for bugs, on a wider scale than an internal beta while only exposing part of the user base to the bugs. Frankly, I wish more companies would consider it for even just that reason. We’d still get messes like YouTube upgrading with half its features broken, but only a tenth of the users would have to put up with it at any given time.

The new layout’s already approved, and it’s going through even if it’s shite.

Judging from the harsh comments and the low rating, why is this badged at all? Because it can make revenue?

I think it’s important to point out that prior to badging, it had a 4.02.

Topic: Kongregate / [Archive] Friday Challenges - Snail Bob 5: Love Story

Just destroyed another and still no dice. Something might be up. EDIT: Okay, that’s the problem. There are two really similar ships, the Level 2 and the 3 (or maybe there’s a 4, but I doubt it). I’m not sure why I mistook them, but this time I got the three. It’s the longer of the two, not so triangular.

Which ones are the Level 3 bosses? I’m pretty sure I destroyed one but it was almost off-screen so I can’t be certain. It had been taking some heavy hits and SOMETHING dropped a big pile of bonuses.

Topic: Kongregate / Imporant question for people who use public computers such as at the libary

If the library prevents you from seeing/opening hidden files, the Kongregate backup utility might still be able to access the saves… but the library would also have to allow you run an unfamiliar program off your flash drive, which seems even less likely.

EDIT: Oh, the link to the Utility is dead. Well, like I said, it wasn’t likely to work to begin with.

Forest to Fire

Complete the first grasslands area to unlock Sophie in Kongai!

The game’s acting kind of weird. I’m seeing stuff that’s clearly supposed to be beyond the border of the flash. It’s weirdest with the GUI floating inside the visible flash with cut off borders on the right and bottom. A side effect of Kong recently expanding the visible game area two site updates ago, or something on my end?

EDIT: Actually, I take back the “weirdest” part, there are a dozen things weird about this. I can’t really blame a dev for not accounting for stuff you’re not supposed to see (unless this is the Dev’s fault, but it doesn’t seem that way), but wow, it’s like there’s a seam to a twisted demon dimension chasing me on the right side of the screen.
