Topic: Kongregate / Upcoming Badges!

I sent the developer an email about Cube Escape: Harvey’s Box. That’ll probably go up on Monday if the API is added.

Lionheart badges went up today, so I can cross those off the list.

After reviewing feedback and talking with the GemCraft developer a bit more, this is the current plan; I’m hoping to get those live next week too:

Easy: Earn 30 achievements

Medium: Reach wizard level 30

Hard: Conquer 4 vision fields

Hard: Complete the final story level

Keep the feedback coming on GemCraft badges — I’ve already changed them around a few times.

Hey everyone, quick update on the plan for GemCraft badges. In light of the feedback we’ve gotten from this thread, the developer and I have decided to tweak the design of the easy and medium badges. Here’s the updated plan:

Easy: Earn any 20 in-game achievements

Medium: Reach wizard level 30

Hard: Uncover 12 hexagonal map tiles

Hard: Banish a monster with the Gem of Eternity

Let us know what you think!

Sugar, Sugar 3 badges are up — thanks to Bluji for helping with the easy one!

I’m also adding Bear in Super Action Adventure to the queue.

A badge is up in Cube Escape: Arles!

Originally posted by Bluji:

When you say “banish a monster with the Gem of Eternity”, that is equal to “complete story mode”, right?

Also, one of the biggest changes in the game is the massive achievement system – it would be nice to see that utilized, especially because it requires one to get to know the mechanics of the game better. Could the easy badge use that instead of one-hit kills?

Regarding the hard badge, yes, it’s near the end, and I know that’s long. I know the medium badge is pretty long too. But there’s still a lot of stuff beyond completing story mode, right?

Regarding the achievement system, the easy badge is actually based on an in-game achievement. Or are you suggesting a badge for earning X in-game achievements? If so, propose a number!

Sorry about that, might be a new bug from API changes. I notified the developer about it.

Okay, after a (very long) Skype meeting with the GemCraft developer, we have some tentative badge plans! Let me know what you guys think:

Easy: Deliver 75 one-hit kills

Medium: Reach wizard level 40

Hard: Uncover 12 hexagonal map tiles

Hard: Banish a monster with the Gem of Eternity

This is an incredibly difficult game to design badges for, so any feedback here is especially appreciated!

Thanks for the feedback/suggestions, guys! Quick update:

I played through Cube Escape Arles yesterday and asked the developer to implement a stat for completion. I think that’s been added, so that shouldn’t take long if it’s working.

Sugar, Sugar 3 is also on my list. The API seems to be working well.

No promises but I’m shooting to get those two and Matter of Caos Episode 1 up this week. Peter (GemCraft dev) and I are in different time zones and I need to figure out a good time to chat with him about badges. I’ve played a lot of GemCraft lately but the game is so enormous that I still don’t have any solid badge plans.

Hey guys, quick update — I spent most of this week working on Lionheart Tactics and GemCraft.

The Lionheart Tactics badges will probably be an easy for completing the tutorial missions (not sure exactly where, but somewhere early) and a medium badge for getting a hero around level 20.

GemCraft… oh god… I have no idea. I’ve spent a few days on it so I’m guessing I’m about 1% through. If you have suggestions for GemCraft, please weigh in! I’m going to set up a meeting with the developer next week to talk about it.

Also, I’m gone tomorrow for Heather’s wedding rehearsal. Whoa!

Just because of Kongpanions, I’d probably prefer it to be a hard badge so it doesn’t become a (Monday) BotD that some member can’t get.

I actually blacklist long medium badges from being badge of the day pretty regularly, and I would certainly do that here. I also move the longish badges of the day toward the end of the week, usually.

If you’ve noticed a recent badge of the day that was too long, let me know — I’m pretty liberal about blacklisting them.

Okay, I just finished A Matter of Caos Episode 4 and verified that the API is working correctly. I’m interested in any additional feedback that anyone would have about the badge difficulty, because it seems more like a hard badge than a medium badge to me. It’s pretty long and some of the puzzles are really obscure, even if there’s no pixel-hunting.

I agree about badging the older games in the series as well. Since I’ve been pretty slow on badges lately and I’m so close on getting a badge up in Episode 4, I think I’m going to do that first, then I’ll work through the older games in the series starting next week.

I just went back and enabled the “game completion” stat in the leaderboard for the first 3 Matter of Caos games, which means that if you complete any of the 3 earlier games now, the future badges will be 100% retroactive, even without having to load your save file and do the end again.

Please weigh in with feedback about whether completing Episode 4 should be a medium badge or a hard badge. Honestly I could go either way, so I’ll defer to a vote here. Also feel free to suggest names if you’d like.

No, you can only earn the quest medal and points once.

What? You are now in charge of multiplayer games? Isn’t that the faculty of rawismojo? Does rawismojo just quit?

rawismojo moved on to our mobile publishing division a year or two ago. It’s been just me making all the badges since then. I always did the multiplayer badges, but our virtual goods team selects the games.

Thanks for the support, everyone — I definitely appreciate it! I’ve been dealing with this pain gradually worsening for most of my life, and it just ramped up a lot recently. I’m still adjusting, but sleeping pills are helping a lot with the insomnia. I’ll learn to deal with it. Anyway, let’s get this thread back on track…

The next two multiplayer games to receive badges will be Party of Heroes and Lionheart Tactics. The plan for Party of Heroes is an easy badge for getting some honor and a medium badge for completing the Gognarr-Dum Vault.

I don’t have any plans for Lionheart Tactics yet, so suggest away!

Regarding single-player games, A Matter of Caos: Episode 4 seems like a good candidate for a completion badge. I’ll look into that tomorrow.

Also, on a badge-related note, Fancy Pants has been removed from its two associated quests due to lag issues (Anika’s Odyssey replaced it in the Best of 2007 quest and Fancy Pants 3 replaced it in the “Your First” quest).

Okay, that actually took way longer than I thought it would. Fancy Pants has now been replaced with Anika’s Odyssey in the Best of 2007 quest (partially an editorial decision, though it was one of the highest-rated replacement options), and Fancy Pants has also been replaced with Fancy Pants World 3 in the “Your First Quest” set (can’t let too much fanciness escape our quests!).

So if lag issues in Fancy Pants were preventing you from earning these quests, you’re all out of excuses now!

Perhaps Greg needs some medical attention.

I am currently seeking medical attention for severe chronic pain that is making sleep nearly impossible. I have seen 8 doctors about this matter and have not received anything close to a diagnosis (other than 1 doctor telling me that I just needed to learn to live with it after he ruled out cancer). I have undergone numerous tests that have turned up nothing. I have been missing some work lately as a result of this, and the severe sleep deprivation/constant pain is having an enormous effect on my day-to-day energy levels and cognitive functioning.

When I get home each day, I do nothing but medical research. I don’t really have a life outside of this anymore. I can’t focus on doing anything else because the physical pain is just too severe. I’m currently paying for a subscription to UpToDate purely to access medical information because I’ve already exhausted everything on websites like WebMD, and I’ve mentally given up on getting a diagnosis from doctors (though I’m still continuing to schedule new appointments with new doctors on a regular basis — there is never a gap when I don’t have something scheduled with someone).

I realize this is kind of TMI, and I don’t mean to sound whiny, but the truth is that this job at Kongregate is very important to me, and I realize I’m not currently performing it to my full potential. I understand that it’s a bit comical to make a compilation of all the times that I’ve apologized for missing self-imposed deadlines and quotas, but please realize that no one is more bothered by this than I am, and there’s a bit more than just laziness going on here.

That hard badge name… Greg, stop trying to woo me.

There is a very direct correlation between how long I spend trying to come up with a badge name and how loose my rhyming rules become.

Easy for reaching the mainframe? Pretty please?

I asked about this once, but I just asked again. I think just a binary stat for reaching the mainframe via any route would avoid the problem with this version of the game being more open-ended, but I’ll see what the developer says back. If he can add the stat, I’ll make the badge.

Edit: The developer reiterated his desire to not have an easy badge associated with the game, so I’m going to honor his request. Sorry guys! I should be able to get the hard completion badge up tomorrow.

Mu Complex: Episode Two is next on the list! I’m thinking just one hard badge for completion; I emailed the developers about getting a progress-related stat, but they explained that this would be tricky because the game is open-ended.

I could possibly do a medium badge for unlocking a command, but I think this would still be pretty hard by medium badge standards (or I’m just really terrible at these sorts of games, though those aren’t mutually exclusive).

Topic: Kongregate / Kongegate Becoming TOO Adult?

Originally posted by FlyingCat:

If we’re going by the logic that Greg presents, then would I be correct to assume Johnny Rocketfingers is also safe due to the fact that it’s stick figure art? I mean the action may be obscene, but the art style is not very obscene. I mean talking about the action in chat is probably far more provocative than what you see in the game.

I realize that “obscene” is very vague. It’s ultimately a judgment call on our end. We’re not really concerned with gray areas like Johnny Rocketfingers; we’re more concerned with outright hentai or shock images. We reserve the right to reject games on the basis of being overly obscene, but it’s not something that we actively police in “normal” games.

It’s also a fact that Kongregate.com prohibits R-rated content on their site. Yet, (also a fact): they badged and promoted an R-rated game. How did they get away with this? Why did it happen? That’s what I want to know.

Then you shall know! Your first statement is false. These are our content guidelines, as stated on the upload page: “Pornographic, hateful, or obscene games will not be accepted.”

’Til Cows Tear Us Apart does not violate any of these standards. Single-pixel alien nipples are not “pornographic” or “obscene.”

A game can be easily R-rated without coming close to violating our standards. Look at Thing-Thing.
