bq. For those of you who don’t want to read through this, stride claimed that a glitch (something they didn’t think of) allowed for multiple users to submit the same name. At the end of the contest, they basically announced that they can’t let 40 people all win from the same name, so a drawing would give random people the prizes, and people who submitted similar names would receive a unique pack of gum as a prize.

That doesn't sound like a scam to me. It sounds like Stride did the fairest thing they could, and they didn't benefit at all from the problem, so I can't imagine how someone would think that they had malicious intent. The Kongregate contest is way different, anyway, since games can't have unlimited owners.

bq. There are also sites that share ad revenue not only from your game’s page but from your user profile and a blog you can host there.

Why does it matter where the revenue is being shared from if Kongregate's ad revenue share (even strictly on a per-view basis) blows other sites out of the water? Would you rather have a $2 cpm in 1 place or a $.20 cpm in 3 places?

Think about what you're saying for a moment. Badges in a game have never worked before badges were added.

It is not the API. The stats are being submitted. I saw them while testing, I see them now, and I see them in the high score listing.

Some things to note:

1) How do you define indie? Newgrounds and Armor Games are as indie as they come. They're small, independent, private companies not owned by a larger entity.

2) Newgrounds does not create games; they only sponsor them.

3) Most of Armor Games' employees were independent Flash game developers before they were hired. They now receive a salary to do what they love and create free games that people enjoy. What's the problem here?

4) Even games uploaded by companies such as Adult Swim were likely created by independent contracting companies -- some of them were even created by one or two people. The branding doesn't always tell the full story about the human being(s) behind the code/art.

5) Are you possibly confusing indie with unpolished? Some of the best-looking and most professional games on the site were created by one or two people.

"Game stealing" is largely an accepted part of the Flash world, and actually embraced by most developers looking for wide distribution. The practice is what allows the sponsorship model to exist.

If there's a specific site you don't want your game hosted on, you can legally request that they take it down. For the most part, though, it's more productive to try to benefit from the system than to fight it. There's always the option to site-lock if you're looking for a quick solution, though.

Regarding the Kongregate exclusivity bonus, we're not going to worry too much if your game is grabbed and rehosted. You just won't be eligible for the bonus if you're actively uploading your game elsewhere or you get it sponsored by another website.

bq. Also, can you tell us what sort of limitations there are on medals? (For example, is a “Get every badge quest” possible, or would the high number of badges and need to update the badge criteria every few days cause a problem.)

I definitely do not want to do a quest for getting every badge on the site. There are just too many issues with that. Sorry guys.

Some of my ideas:

Epic Quest -- Complete the Epic Week badges, plus some other stuff

Year In Review Quests -- Complete badges in the 10 highest rated games uploaded in 2007, 2008 and 2009 (3 separate quests)

Multiplayer Quest -- Complete badges in Sacred Seasons, Dinowaurs, Zening, Battalion, etc. (might wait for Skystone on something like this)

Genre Quests -- Quests for games in specific genres

Still thinking about this stuff...

That's the idea, yes, but honestly I haven't finalized any new ones yet, or even what the general philosophy behind them should be. I've learned a ton about achievement design in the past couple of years, and I think that this is pretty evident if you compare the older designs with the newer ones. So I'd like to be very cautious about how the quests should work, what they should encourage, how they're going to affect the perception of badges (particularly ones NOT part of a medal), how many there should be, how often they should be made, etc.

I have a lot of rough ideas off the top of my head. There could be a zombie-themed medal, or an epic-themed medal with the games from Epic Week plus a few others, etc. Or maybe the community could make suggestions for medals -- I think that that would work a lot better than suggestions for creating the actual badges, since people often suggest badges that are impossible to implement or with questionable difficulties/fun factors. (I think designing a medal would be more intuitive and with less room for error.)

Anyway, it's all kind of up in the air at the moment. I'm going to closely monitor the impact of the first two quests while I think about how the new ones should be designed. Any World of Warcraft player should know that designing meta-achievements is a whole new art form with whole new potential problems (lawlz "A Mask For All Occasions" once being a requirement of "What A Long Strange Trip It's Been").

It's an awesome addition to the site that I'm really excited about, but I'm definitely not taking its potential impact lightly.

Not that it means anything but…

I think it's pretty common for Flash game sequels to improve upon the originals in nearly every way. And it's also pretty common for successful games to get sequels. So yeah, usually sequels get attention. I know that some people prefer the first Medieval Rampage to the second, and I know that the first 2 Epic War games were way different from the third, but if you look at games like DTD Pro, Dolphin Olympics 2, Bubble Tanks 2, etc., they're just flat-out better than the originals in every way imaginable. And the originals were great games to begin with.

Originally posted by notverygood:

I’m fine with the layout being used for games, it’s actually better. The badge layout was fine as it is, and didn’t need changing.

If you prefer the old badge layout, you're simply not looking very closely at what the new one can do. Filter out earned badges and sort by newest to achieve the exact same functionality as the old page, plus more listed per page and with more info by each one.

There are also a ton of new sorting options for finding new badges to earn (by genre, difficulty, etc.), and seeing some interesting stats in general (such as which badges have been earned the most or least).

Honestly, the old badge page sucked, and we said that it sucked numerous times -- we actually had to increase its suckitude once just for performance reasons (some may remember that it used to not be paginated!). By contrast, the new one is awesome. I know that change can be irrationally scary for some people, but think of it as a desensitization treatment!

Though if you're especially resistant to accepting change on the site, I suppose another psychological effect will eventually kick in.

The badge layout was fine as it is, and didn’t need changing.

If you prefer the old badge layout, you’re simply not looking very closely at what the new one can do.
