The Space Game is actually looking pretty good for an older game — the API seems to be working well. I’ll look into it a bit more when I have more badge-making time (busy with other stuff lately, blargh).

I’m planning a medium completion badge tomorrow for The Gatekeeper. “Rest in Hell” is probably the most obvious name, but maybe someone can come up with something better.

Internal miscommunication. :(

will that be changed soon?

After a bit of internal discussion we decided to change the awarded points from 30 to the normal 50, even though this means that the feature roll has the wrong number now.

If you already earned the Best of 2015 medal during this small 2.5-hour window, please send me a private message and I’ll award you the 20 extra points manually.

Many thanks to pepe8717 for suggesting “A Grain of Truth” — I just finished playing through it, and I’d honestly say that it’s one of the best games on the site. Everyone should play it. I don’t know how this gem was overlooked.

…but the API doesn’t submit anything (despite stats existing), so I can’t give it a badge. The gold-panning continues…

Just giving a quick update here — I’ve been busy with non-badge-related stuff lately, plus working on Shop Heroes and Raid Brigade (online games usually take a bit longer).

Also, the Best of 2015 quest is going live tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow morning!

Also, unfortunately Submachine 10 still doesn’t have our stats API, so it can’t be included in the quest. Don’t Escape 2 is therefore being included by ratings default, since it was the 9th highest-rated game, as explained in the original post.

Raid Brigade is indeed scheduled for badges. Sorry to ruin all the fun here!

Thanks for voting, everyone! It looks like Bullet Heaven 2 and Christmas Cat are the winners, assuming Axiss32 can be trusted.

“cnyS fO tuO” isn’t bad, but I’m just now realizing that I haven’t used “Through the Looking Glass” anywhere yet — I just assumed that I had. So I’m kind of leaning toward that, I think.

Would it be possible to badge all 12 Submachine games?

I don’t know about all 12, but technical issues with our API implementation is the only thing that is preventing this series from getting badges. I’m trying to get this resolved right now, especially in light of Submachine 10 being a part of the Best of 2015 quest nomination process.

And speaking of the Best of 2015 quest, I’m adding a completion badge to another one of the nominees tomorrow — The Splitting! There are a few API stats along the way, so I could do an easy badge for an early checkpoint, but I’m leaning toward just one medium completion badge. I’m planning this for tomorrow — suggest names if you’d like!

Topic: Kongregate / Found on the doormat: Gobbler and Ms. Cake! [+ Message to GREG]

My presence in this thread has been requested, though the flower of life button no longer belongs to me, and I do not hold any attachment to it.

You must understand that the pin cannot be destroyed; it can only change forms. Destruction is an act of creation, and you may choose to create smaller fragments of the pin if you wish. Know, however, that the whole identity of the pin will remain within each fragment, just as the whole of reality is within each of us.

Know, also, that our reality is not a single linear sequence of events, but rather, an interwoven tapestry of past and future probable realities that simultaneously occur and do not occur. The button has not yet been produced, and it has already decayed, simultaneously. You may choose whichever path of reality you wish to experience between these two states, but know that the button is already eternal — it is already an inseparable aspect of the One Reality, existing in eternity, yet simultaneously fleeting from our limited, ever-changing third-dimensional perspectives.

Do not buy into the delusion that the reality you presently experience is the only one that exists. You can do whatever you wish to the button, but there will be infinite alternate timelines in which it is safely on my desk, or safely on your desk, or safely on someone else’s desk entirely. Look deeply into the button. Within this button, as within all things, the trained eye can see unity, infinity — the complete manifestation of infinite potential, of infinite realities, of infinite experience.

And yet, even across these infinite probable timelines of manifestation, not a single actualized reality has badges in Heather’s Halloween Christmas.

Just a small tip for anyone going for the hard badge; the “Agile Red” achievement only requires that you avoid rocks (the glowing yellow ones), large/mother bugs, and laser bases/turrets. You can drive into the small bugs or laser beams without ruining the attempt. I was very frustrated until I realized that those lesser obstructions wouldn’t ruin the run.

I went through something similar. I’ll add a clarification to the badge description.

don’t ruin this for me

I still thought it was the best name, though, and I couldn’t come up with a better one myself — that’s why I used it!

I could have instead gone with some of the longer, cheesier names, but they were kind of trying too hard, you know? Your name was the nice staple vanilla goodness that won’t offend anyone’s palette too harshly.

I agree; I just finished it. There is a bit of luck involved, and a few moments of frustration, but overall not too difficult or time-consuming. I think I’m going to move ahead with it.

Thanks stardancer32 — I had actually just figured that out. I thought that “jump” meant warping to the bottom of the green zone; I didn’t realize there was a whole separate red zone.

So I’m having fun with the game again now! I think that having a hard badge for unlocking the candy drill might be fun, but I’m a little iffy about the “Agile red” and “Fast red” achievements that are required for doing this. (Edit: Never mind, I didn’t realize that all blocks count for “Fast red” — that’s actually really easy.) I’m pretty close to being able to do it myself, so I just want to confirm that it’s not too frustrating before locking in my decision.

Anyway, so with this new development I’m going to plan Reach the Core badges for tomorrow for real this time. Please feel free to continue to weigh in with name suggestions, or any thoughts about having a hard badge for unlocking the candy drill.

Honestly, I’d recommend a hard just for completion; it’s pretty long.

Yeah, it was a bit longer than I expected — it took me a couple of hours. It is really easy, though, and they days go by very quickly. It would either be a long medium or an easy hard; I think I’m leaning toward the former, but I can see the argument for the latter.

Originally posted by TwoPlusTwo:

Yeah, speed completion would be pretty rough for this game, which doesn’t really offer any rapid advancement techniques and takes quite a few runs. I am a little surprised, though, that there’s not a hard badge (or at least a second medium) planned for unlocking the candy drill, which feels like the actual end of the game. (As far as names, I don’t think I can do better than Precarious’s Material Whirl for the easy, but I’ll brainstorm about the medium.)

Early yesterday I finished the game and kept playing to see if it would make sense to add another badge to something else. I’m at the point now where I can collect about 10 plasma from the core per run, but it’s soooo slow. One upgrade will take 20 plasma (or whatever that stuff is). I’m not sure how the candy drill is unlocked, but I rescued that one guy and it didn’t seem to do anything, other than provide some resources. I was having a lot of fun with this game when I reached the core, and even for an hour or two after I reached the core, but now it’s getting kind of boring.

There’s a part of my brain that’s suggesting “You Know the Drill” for the medium badge, since there are so many games like this, but that might be too cheesy…

I’m planning badges in Reach the Core for tomorrow, but you guys know how I am. I’m thinking a medium for reaching the core and an easy for collecting materials. I don’t think I’m going to bother with a speed run for this one. Anyway, suggest names if you’d like!

Oh, crap, thanks for pointing this out. I was using this filter, and Bullet Heaven 2 isn’t showing up there for some reason. Man, two years in a row that I messed this up. But at least this time it was only half my fault, kind of.

The original post as been updated. If you’d like to change your vote to Bullet Heaven 2, please feel free to do so. I’ll be messaging everyone who already voted to make sure that everyone’s aware.

Topic: Kongregate / Best of 2015 Quest Voting!

It's that time of year again! I'm preparing the Best of 2015 quest, and giving everyone a chance to vote on the final two games to be included. Here are the 8 top-rated games that are already (sort of) guaranteed a spot in the quest:

#1: Swords and Souls

#2: The Enchanted Cave 2

#3: GemCraft: Chasing Shadows

#4: Don't Escape 3

#5: Decision 3

#6: Epic Boss Fighter 2

#7: Submachine 10: The Exit (no badge yet, might be dropped)

#8: Cube Escape: Case 23 (might have to include the first hard badge in a quest)

Note that Submachine 10 does not have any badges yet because the whole series is lacking our stats API, but I just emailed the developer and asked if he could add our stats API into Submachine 10 so it can be fill its spot in the Best of 2015 quest. (It would also be nice if we could add badges to the older games in the series -- I requested this from the developer as well.)

Also, I generally avoid hard badges for these quests, but I'm planning to give a pass to Cube Escape: Case 23 just because it's on the easier end of hard badges, and it doesn't require any kind of coordinated active skill. Worst-case scenario, you could always use a guide or check through the comments (I don't factor this in for badge difficulties, but I think I'm okay with factoring it in a little bit with quest inclusions if it's the only option available).

So, here are the next 10 11 runner-up games:

#1: Don't Escape 2

#2: Royal Squad

#3: Cube Escape: Seasons (this would also need to be a hard badge)

#4: Earn to Die 2: Exodus

#5: Witch Hunt

#6: Christmas Cat

#7: The Splitting (will attempt adding a completion badge either way)

#8: Words Warriors

#9: Bullet Heaven 2 (whoops, I missed this one initially)

#10: Frozen Islands

#11: 50 Years (graphical)

Please vote for one game from the second list to be included! We'll tally up the votes, and the top two games from the above runner-up list will be included in the final 10-game "Best of 2015" quest.

However, IF you vote for Don't Escape 2, please also vote for your second choice. This is because if Submachine 10 doesn't get our stats API, it won't get a badge, and it won't be included in the quest, so Don't Escape 2 will be included by default as the #8 highest-rated eligible game.

Please also vote for your second choice if you vote for The Splitting, since it doesn't yet have our API or a badge, so it might not be eligible. I emailed the developer requesting that our statistics API be implemented so a badge can be added, and I'm just waiting to hear back.

TL;DR recap: The first 8 games are (mostly) locked in. Vote for your top pick from the second list of 10 11 games. If your pick is Don't Escape 2 or The Splitting, please also vote for your second choice.

Oh yeah, and voting will last through Friday, January 22.

Edit: I messed this up this year... again... but not as badly as last year. For some weird reason, Bullet Heaven 2 was not showing up in this filter, so I completely missed it. If you would like to change your vote to Bullet Heaven 2, please feel free to do so. I'll be messaging everyone who voted individually to make sure that they know about this and have a chance to change their vote, just to keep everything fair. I'll also leave 50 Years on the list at #11 -- you can continue to vote for this one if you wish. Sorry about the mistake.... again... we'll see if I get this right on the first try next year!

Topic: Kongregate / Upcoming Badges!

I know I’ve been absent this week, but the quick update is that I’ve been playing lots of Shop Heroes. There will be a medium badge for reaching shop level 10, and a yet-to-be-determined easy badge for something sooner.

I’m looking into Reach the Core. That’s a very high priority if things look good. I’m removing Reckless Speed due to the feedback here, and Infectonator: Christmas because the developer never got back to me (and Christmas is over now…).

I really appreciate all the suggestions here for older games, even if I’m not directly responding to each suggestion. There are often lots of little issues with older games that aren’t immediately obvious, but I am starting the process of digging through them a bit more aggressively.

But it’s an inescapable fact that there just aren’t going to be as many new badges on the site as there were a few years ago. Web-game development has slowed a lot, and badging older games is a finite process that takes much more time than adding badges to newer games. At some point I may decide to lower my standards a bit, but I’m really hesitant to do this because games in the 3.7-and-below range tend to get hit especially hard by badge-hunters in terms of the effect on ratings/comments, which is a negative experience for developers and also indicates that players themselves are having a negative experience.

But there’s no excuse for not badging some older games that were overlooked. Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions, and please keep them coming. I’m coming back from vacation mode a bit here, and digging through older games will likely be a high priority next week.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that. It’s up to the developer — I think we were waiting because he was working on some new feature or something, but I honestly can’t remember the details. I’ll ask him about it. Thanks for the reminder!
