Anyway, I’m hoping to get badges up in Evo Explores tomorrow or early next week. There will probably just be a medium for completion, but I’m still working on that — I’m on level 12, and it’s taken maybe about 2 hours so far. If anyone has any feedback about the difficulty/length, please weigh in! Also feel free to weigh in with name suggestions.

Okay, so I hate to go against everyone’s feedback here, but I think I’m going to go with an easy badge for Jumphobia. This design was requested by the developer, and I’m kind of leaning in that direction anyway the more I think about it. Feel free to suggest names if you’d like — these will go live tomorrow (and I actually mean that, since it’ll be part of the newsletter feature).

Also, I’m adding “[Suggest new badges here]” to this thread title because it was requested, and I think this makes sense.

Thanks to uzzbuzz for the suggestion of Einstein’s Riddle, also! I just added that to my favorites list — seems like a good candidate if there’s a slow week.

The next set of badges will be in Jumphobia! There will be a hard badge for completing every level, and either an easy badge for completing the first level (all rooms) or a medium badge for unlocking the 4th area (completing 11 levels). I don’t really want to do both because it’s kind of redundant/repetitive, but feel free to weigh in with which of the easier badges you’d prefer seeing on the site.

Thanks for the name suggestions, everyone! I really like “Home Is Where the Hearth Is.” The developer of the game has some thoughts on which name he’d prefer, so I’m going to give him the final say on that. The badge will go live as soon as I hear back from him.

There aren’t any plans to add more badges to Balloon in a Wasteland — sorry!

Edit 2: Crap, but it’s not showing up or awarding. That’s really weird. The API data is submitting correctly, so it must be a bug on our end. Time to dig into this…

Topic: Kongregate / What are your favorite web games that are NOT on Kongregate?

Hi everyone!

Lately I’ve been making an effort to reach out to developers who have great web games that aren’t already on Kongregate for whatever reason. This basically means that I’ve been spending a lot of time on sites like Newgrounds and Game Jolt, sifting through all the best stuff from the past year or so.

But anyone who knows my badge-making process already knows that I’m pretty lazy, and I try to crowdsource as much as possible. So here’s your chance to do my job for me talk about your favorite games on the web, assuming they’re not on Kongregate already!

All you need to do is identify the game, and maybe where it’s hosted. If it looks good, I’ll handle the rest — tracking down the developer and personally inviting them to upload it onto Kongregate.

Fire away!

Another philosophical question: What does it mean to be “alive”? Could it be that everything is technically alive, with varying degrees of awareness? Is that why there isn’t any idle games on the botd?

Well, there aren’t many idle badges on the site at all… But probably about 3/4 of the badges on the site aren’t suitable for being badge of the day for one reason or another, so I add badges to the blacklist pretty regularly.

There’s a completion badge live now in There Is No Game. Also, the next multiplayer game to receive badges will be Zeus Age. The current plan is to have an easy badge for reaching level 3 and a medium badge for reaching 2,000 power.

Learn to Fly 3 is currently being delayed for various reasons, but we haven’t forgotten about it.

I also want to take a moment to address the badge quantity on the site, both recently and going forward. This is going to be a major focus for me going forward, since it’s really important that all the best games on the web find their way to Kongregate.

Creating badges on Kongregate has never been a full-time job for me — I’ve always had other things going on the background (mostly Flash game sponsorships, though that program is essentially dead by now). However, while it was once about half my job (and rawismojo once assisted), it is now a very small percentage (about 15%). Combine this with the fact that the quantity of the games themselves has slowed, and the result is that we’ll probably never return to the era of a few years ago, when getting 2-3 new sets of badges on the site each week was fairly common.

Creating badges and interacting with the community is, by far, my favorite part of my job. Kongregate is the only office job I’ve ever worked at — I joined as the first employee practically straight out of college, and I’ve been here for almost 10 years now. I really love you guys, even if I don’t post a whole lot. Knowing how much the people here care about the site, the community, and the badge system is what motivates me at this job more than anything else.

The big games on the site will continue to receive badges. It’s still important to me, and it’s still important to the company. However, I’m making this long dramatic post because I feel that it’s important to align expectations with reality. The badge quantity is just not going to recover to where it was when the Flash development scene peaked a few years ago. There are still great games being made, and these games will continue to receive badges and promotion. However, it is unlikely that I will spend much time digging through old games for badges (honestly, this is a ton of work relative to how productive it is, and I spent too much time on it last year with very little to show for it), and it’s also unlikely that the ratings threshold for new badges will be significantly lowered. It’s more important for us to focus on featuring the absolute best content that the site has to offer, and it’s also important for me to focus on doing the things that will help the company succeed as much as possible.

“There Is No Game” has 2 API stats, but I don’t know what they do because I haven’t finished the game, personally. What are you supposed to enter to water the tree?

Also, I think even all 5 paths in Fleeing the Complex is an easy badge. It doesn’t really take any actual effort, and you can still get them all in less than 15 minutes (unless you’re dumb like me and miss that first split for waiting in your cell).

I’m working on getting the API into Fleeing the Complex, but I still haven’t heard back on Learn to Fly 3.

The badges for “Raiders Took My Dog” will probably just be an easy badge for 100 kills and a medium badge for 12 in-game achievements. Feel free to suggest names!

Quick update here: Learn to Fly 3 is still not reporting API data in real-time — only retroactively. I’ve contacted the developer about this but haven’t heard back yet. I can’t move forward with adding badges to the game until this is fixed.

I’m currently working with the developer of Raiders Took My Dog to get the API implemented. There will probably be an easy badge for kills, a medium for achievements, and either a medium or hard for completing the game.

Fleeing the Complex was just uploaded, and I’m talking with the developer about implementing our stats API. I know it’s still under judgment, but this game is awesome/hilarious and I’ll probably make an editorial decision to add a completion badge even if people are wrong and give it a low rating.

Thyrael’s explanation of Royal Warfare 2’s removal is correct, also. I feel at least partially responsible for this — we really should have sponsored the game or worked out some kind of arrangement to be able to get it on the site without third-party login systems. Sorry about that. :(

I like Grandfather Paradox too. Maybe “reverse” instead of “inverted”… even though it’s not really 100% either one… but close enough! (Would the actual reverse be your grandfather killing you? Or you saving your grandfather?)

Edit: I just realized that Cube Escape: Birthday ONLY submits the “Boom” stat when you speak to the grandfather at the end. If you complete the game without speaking to the grandfather, the stat doesn’t submit. I just emailed the developer about this issue. The badge will be live as soon as that’s fixed.

CUBE ESCAPE SPOILERS IN THIS POST!!!

I should clarify that Cube Escape: Birthday submits the completion stat right when the grandfather shoots the gun and says “Boom, haha” — a little sooner than the actual ending (but only by about 15 seconds, with no meaningful difficulty past that point). So, badge names themed around this particular moment in the game would be especially good.

I had to use the walkthrough for a couple of puzzle in this game. I don’t think I would have figured out how to get the fly with the gum, or using the silver coin to get the gun at the end. I also didn’t figure out the window fog puzzle, but maybe I would have if I spent more time on it. I feel dumb enough about these puzzles that I’m leaning toward making it a medium badge, but then I did have to use a guide, so I don’t know. If I get strong feedback here that it should be a hard badge, I’ll consider it, but otherwise I’m leaning toward medium. I think the only Cube Escape game that’s gotten a hard badge for completion so far (Case 23) was significantly longer and more difficult than the others, including this one.

I have some other stuff to do today, but I’m going to try to get LtF3 badges live this week or early next. Please keep the suggestions and feedback coming — they’re very helpful, though I still need to play the game more myself before reaching any final decisions.

In the meantime, I’m going to toss up a quick completion badge in Cube Escape: Birthday, so suggest names if you’d like!

Yeah, this is pretty reasonable, though I’d like to work through some older games first. Like, maybe once every old game above a 4.0 has badges, I’ll start looking more at newer games around 3.7 for badges. Just a thought, anyway — I still have a good number of games in the queue right now.

And of course the top priority is Learn to Fly 3! I just completed story mode, and I’m playing through classic mode now. Here are my rough thoughts so far:

Easy: Not sure yet, maybe best speed or item upgrades. Altitude is kind of redundant with the overall goal.

Medium: Complete story mode

Medium: Complete classic mode? (I’m not sure how long this is yet, but I doubt it’d be a hard badge)

Hard: No idea. Something with payload mode? Or that 4th mode that’s still grayed out? Medals? Destroying the moon? A timed run?

I’m seeing that there’s a stat for destroying the moon, but I don’t know how to do this (go really fast?). I’m reluctant to assign a hard badge to anything too grindy, like completing the story mode 4 times. The game isn’t currently submitting any data about medals, but I could request this, and it might make a good hard badge. I could do a hard badge for completing story mode under a certain number of days, but that might be kind of frustrating.

Anyway, I just started working on this today, so I’m still in the early brainstorming phase. If you have thoughts or opinions about what the badges should be, please feel free to share.

The tutorial basically consists of its entire first run, which can take more than a day. Now that we’re doing medium badges as BotD’s, and medium badges can become BotD one day, I’d prefer that “finishing the first run” isn’t a medium, if that’s going to be a badge.

I manually curate badge of the day. I’m not always 100% perfect at it, but there has never been a medium badge in an MMO as the badge of the day. These are the types of badges I permanently blacklist from the system (probably about half the badges on the site are blacklisted from being automatically selected as badge of the day, even before manual curation).

That being said, I am leaning toward making the medium badge “recruit 20 crusaders.”

I want to clear up a bit of possible confusion here. I have a personal policy against selecting idle games to receive badges, but I don’t personally decide which multiplayer/virtual goods games receive badges. If I were to apply the same standards to these games as single-player games, there would be a lot more badges in MMOs/virtual goods games. The ratings for these games are generally very high, and they’re quite popular on the site. But it’s not realistic for me individually to have a good sense of which MMO games are best-suited for badges — it’s not really my direct area. Plus, it would take a ridiculous amount of time to actually play them all and work with the developers on API implementation practices (not to mention how much time it would take badge-hunters to earn them all).

Instead, we have a whole team of very talented people at Kongregate who work exclusively with bringing new MMOs onto the site and optimizing their levels of promotion. They know way more about what’s hip and popular than I do, so I defer to them when planning badges in multiplayer/kreds games. They already know that I have a personal bias against idle games, and maybe that’s partly why we’ve gone so long without adding badges to one, but the industry is shifting, and this genre is becoming increasingly popular. So as much as I’d like to be that crotchety old man yelling about kids on my lawn and about how “back in my day, we actually played video games!”, the truth is that idle games are probably here to stay, and CotLI probably won’t be the last idle game to receive badges.

I will say, though, that the game design in idle games has come a long way in the past few years, and I don’t have quite such a viscerally negative reaction to them as I used to. CotLI in particular is probably the best idle game I’ve personally played — I like the sense of progression between zones, and there’s at least a bit of strategy with optimizing your formation. The art is also really good, and the active abilities make things a bit more interesting. If I had to add badges to any idle game on the site that I’ve ever played, at my own discretion, it would definitely be this one.

Thanks for pointing this out. I think this is actually a problem with the high scores and not the API implementation. I’m seeing API data submit to us successfully. The stat name is probably just wrong in the high scores. The distinction here is that I can very easily fix this problem myself if it’s just an issue with stat names and high scores rather than an issue with the data that the game is submitting to us. I’ll dig into this more tomorrow.

Okay, I’ve been playing a lot of The Space Game, Crusaders of the Lost Idols and Raid Brigade this week. Here’s where I am with badge plans:

The Space Game:

Easy: Complete the “easy” mining mode

Medium: Survive for 12-15 minutes on the “Bring It On” (medium) difficulty setting on survival mode (feedback here is appreciated — I got almost exactly 15 minutes on my first try, but there was a pretty big wave around 12 minutes, and I’ve played this game a lot…)

Hard: Complete all 9 missions (the first 8 are easy but I still can’t do the 9th, personally)

Raid Brigade:

Easy: Not sure yet, maybe ~100 kills? I’ll need to request a new stat.

Medium: Complete mission #25 (or something around there)

Crusaders of the Lost Idols:

Easy: No idea yet — suggestions appreciated (I usually figure out easy badges in online games last, after starting over once I have a better understanding of the game flow)

Medium: Probably something around completing mission #50, possibly a bit further (again, suggestions appreciated)
