Topic: Stencyl / Dilution of Game Quality?

I agree with Damijin. Think about it, If I write the code to run, and you write the code to run, and some one else write the code to run, Doesn’t that sound like a waste? When if we all shared that code, then the time spent coding that function or behavior, could be better utilized designing the game the way we want it to be, rather than on small ratehr insignificant concepts.

Also, Stencyl is very powerful, it utilizes Box2D, Flixel, and the Flex Library, so there are very little boundaries. In addition, why should I have to continuously write if(x == b) etc, when I can quickly pop a couple blocks and go? Sure Stencyl is targeted for beginners, but it is not just them. It is targeted for anyone who wants to make a game. I’ve seen some amazing artists have some amazing game ideas, but their lack of programming knowledge prevents them from doing what they want to do. Id that fair? Not necessarily. Because I have seen some amazing Programmers have terrible art skills. And, why pay for something if it isn’t all that necessary?

In the end, there is a HUGE difference between making it easier to make a game, and making it so you can make a game without the need for coding. Stencyl works does both. I’m not sure if you have seen Balls in Space or Dungeon Rush, but I have to say, those are not “low quality” games. The understanding of programming is very different than the concept of logic. one requires you to understand what you can and cannot do( programming – i.e. different variable types and function type like public, static etc.), where the other requires you to understand basic logic, (if a = b and b=c the a = c)

So in my opinion, for anyone to say or think that Stencyl will allow a flood of “low quality games” chances are there will be some “low quality games” but, there will also be a lot more “high quality” games than what you are used to, and chances are, you are either the type of person who makes these “low quality games” or you have no coding/game creation experience, or you are stubborn to the idea that something can be made easier.

Topic: Game Programming / Is a 3 ghz Windows 7 good enough to run Flash reasonably fast?

Could also be that his RAM is toast, something is wrong with CPU i.e. over heated. Could be a virus. There are a lot of reasons he could have received his BSOD.

Also, I didn’t look at the PC he is looking to get, but keep in mind, if you hook your HDD up to the new computer, you need to check if your current one is SATA or PATA (IDE). If the Motherboard on the new PC accepts both PATA and SATA then you should be fine, but some Motherboards only take SATA these days, which means if yours is currently a PATA then you are S.O.L. (unless u get conversion kits)

Also The B2d Flash version has support for Bezier curves which would work amazingly in this scenario.

I’ve done a small amount of Flash Programming, though I’d like to think that I picked up on it very quickly. That and I think very analytically and logically.

Anyway my point is, part of the reason I’ve not been around here lately is because of my time spent beta testing Stencyl. And I really have to say that it is very much worth utilizing. It is feature rich, and from all the suggestions I’ve seen other users making, it is only going to get bigger and better.

I recommend making even at least one game with it and not being so stubborn about using flash. I mean it’s all the same to me, just one is easier to use and learn than the other, not to mention far more efficient in many cases.

Yeah. I had actually thought about how that would work out. Still it would be nice to see it work someday in the future :p

lol. Its been a while since I’ve posted anything here on Kong, as well as visited GDR. I’m in the room now and I must say not much has changed, but the changes that have been made are pretty sweet. I know this has been suggested before. But I think it would be awesome if there was an AIR app for GDR.

Topic: Game Programming / Flash Professional or Flash Builder

When I did JAVA programming in high school I used to use jGrasp. It was very lightweight and at the time it did everything i needed/wanted it to do. I’ve played with NetBeans and Eclipse but because I haven’t touched JAVA in almost 5 years they were very confusing (I’d like to relearn the language at some point).

I like to use FD for programming in AS3. The interface is very user friendly, looks much better than Flash CS X, and I personally liked its looks better than Flash Builder.

For HTML/CSS etc. I use Programmers Notepad 2. It’s again very lightweight and does what I need it to do given the extent of my knowledge.

I read that 123, however, perhaps this “problem” on their end, is because certain pieces of code get screwy due to what is on my end.

Edit and since I updated to FF 4.0 b5 I haven’t had a problem…… yet

I seemed to have run in to this issue again, I have deleted cookies, cache, everything. It appears to only show me the green symbols on posts I have previously viewed. This is rather annoying because I don’t check the forums regularly due to work schedule, so sometimes I don’t remember the last post I viewed ( I like to read all the ones in the programming forum ).

If there is any info that Kong could use to maybe pinpoint what is affecting this from my end I’d certainly like to know. But this has been going on for almost a month now and it’s just really annoying lol. Now I have also tried logging out of the forums and logging back in ( I never log out since FF always caches the data, plus pc runs 24/7 unless shutdown due to sleep mode) but I had no luck with it.

Topic: Game Programming / Stencyl - Flash Game Creator

I can assure you that FD will still be around, do not think that it wont be. Not everyone out there will use Stencyl and even those who do, as UG pointed out it is limited in what it can do. Sure, it’s expandable, but that doesn’t mean that everything flash will run on it. Also, please keep in mind that not everyone uses FD either, some people might use other IDE’s for the programming aspect of things because they like it better and then just use flash as a way of compiling everything.

If you order Domino’s pizza online, their order tracking system is done in flash, doesn’t mean that they used FD, or would even consider Stencyl as a way of making it either. All of these programs have their own abilities that others do not, or have different levels of user interfaces that not everyone likes. I suggest if you get an invite, then play around with it and make your own decision on what you like better. That is what everyone else will be doing.

To further explain how Stencyl will not take over the market the way you think it will. Take alchemy as an example, I don’t see any information discussing the use of Alchemy and Stencyl. Therefore, if you decide you need to program that way, then FD is still available. If you don’t like the idea of a game maker as you like to control everything yourself, FD is still there.

I am letting you know that even if you figure out these changes, not all websites will conform to them anyways. For example, my search box was done using images. Therefore, the color that it is, is the color you will get. While I can certainly understand your motivation behind changing the color schemes completely, I highly doubt that you will get it 100% to what you want. And even more so, I highly doubt you’ll get it close to what you want. Like Word said, you may have to delve into greasemonkey, which would be very in efficient because you’ll have to modify every single site, unless, you find a universal piece of code.

I signed up for the beta as well the link to my game is on Kong’s site so that you can access my username. I second the question about it being free. How open source is it? can users help improve the functionality of it or create addon’s that others can use? is there any type of premium content? could users upload their own premium content alongside free content?

it could be that game class is not set to always compile, unless you change the main class that is automatically created in FD to GameClass. if you’ll give me a little bit I can create a very basic example for you so that you can understand it better. also have you looked into any tutorials on embedding images, i’m sure you can find some that can be very helpful.

EDIT Sorry it took me a while.

http://www.epictechworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/sampleEmbed.zip

that is a very basic project. arrows/wasd to move character. I did not comment any code and there may be a couple bad practices in there that I am unaware of. but it is a working project as i fully tested it. but it will give you an idea of what you should be doing.

that definitely is a pretty cool way of doing things, I never even realized that you could convert a 0/1 to boolean like that. makes sense when you think about, it just never clicked before :p

Topic: Game Programming / Embedding Images AS3 (again... I know)

I learned how to embed images when I tried my hand at flixel, however here is a general idea of how you would control your image.

you have a player class. inside player class is the player’s embedded image as well as any other functions that the player class should contain.

you have a game class. game class is like the engine that controls everything. inside game class you add an instance of the player and put it in the display list.

now inside the game class you could have a function that every time the player presses a key on the D-pad your instance of player moves +1 in that direction.

Please let me know if you understand this or if i need to explain further

In FD if I want to embed something I usually right-click it in the lib Folder on the right side. Then I click “embed”. 99% of the time this works great with no issues and then I don’t need to worry about it being done right.

I don’t know of any easy way to do this. However a suggestion to start with would be to first iterate through the array as such: A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6.

For each “A” column you would then iterate like so: A1, B1, C1, D1, E1.

I believe you said that you needed to have 3 of the same color and then just those 3 would be removed? If so you would then check your positions like so:
A1=green
if B1 = green then counter++

Run through the if statements and then if the next block is not of the same color reset the counter and start over, if the counter equals X then do whatever it is u want with them.

You could do this for both vertical and horizontal. Diagonal would be slightly harder in the fact that every row would need to shift one column, but retains the same idea.

I’m sure there’s an easier way to do this, but if I were doing it I would have started there and then looked for ways to optimize it in all terms of readability, ease of use, and speed.
