Earning the badge of the day gave me the following message:

“You’ve also scored pur_points_number PowerUp Rewards Points for achieving the Badge of the Day!”

Apologies if it’s a known issue.

Thank you so much for looking into this! I’m glad to hear that you’re looking into preventing this kind of thing.

Yeah, getting lots of downvotes on comments is nothing new. But I’ve never seen over the course of half an hour, every comment getting 10+ downvotes (or more, if it got any upvotes during that time) and the game getting >= 20 ratings of 1 (pretty much every rating in that time period, according to basic math). The comments have gone up to 10 and down to negatives many times, which I haven’t seen elsewhere. When a comment gets a lot of votes, it normally trends up into positive or down into negative, not dozens of downvotes to counter all the upvotes, keeping ALL the comments near 0 (I’m sure it happens on smaller scales). I can understand it if the comment only has a few votes, but after seeing it go to 10+ and back down to negatives multiple times, there’s more than a few votes.

Sure, it could all be normal. But what I’m seeing is highly irregular when comparing it to past experiences with games. Those all got downvotes in both score and comments early on, but nothing of this magnitude.

Do they get points for voting down all the good comments for a game though? I don’t think that rewards points, and seems really fishy.

I won’t get into what I think it deserves. Perhaps it deserves a low rating, and I would be completely fine with that, if I knew it was legitimate. It just irks me that from the behavior I’ve noticed, it doesn’t appear to be legitimate.

I’ve watched the ratings closely for the other games I’ve released, and they all definitely started lower (possibly explained by the point hunters), but they never had the behavior where they would go up, and then the rating would drop drastically and every single comment would have got downvotes many times over. And having it happen multiple times is even more suspicious.

Oh well, I will continue to keep an eye on it, and hopefully Kongregate can look into it and see if they can find any way to help improve the system, if there is such abuse going on. :)

IHateCanabalt: Yes, exactly. I can switch a 5 to a 1 to see exactly what effect it will have (and it will be greater seeing as I’m removing a 5 and adding a 1), and it does take quite a bit to drop it over 0.2 points. And by seeing the vote count, you can see that it’s just a constant wave of 1 votes (it’s the only way the math works out). And it does sound like the exact same phenomenon in your post. I’m glad to hear it worked out in the end for that game. :)

Gomo_Psivarh: That’s exactly what I’m trying to avoid; where games are based on illegitimate votes of friends vs downvoters.

Anyway, hopefully time will solve it. My biggest issue is that games that start off low, if they don’t get high enough quick enough, they miss their chance to realize their full potential. And I assume that is the goal of the downvoters, to keep the games down long enough for that weeks list to end, or to lose their chance at appearing in the hot new games. And it seems with the current system, simply getting people to downvote it is can be very successful at doing that.

Topic: Kongregate / New Game Downraters?

Hi guys,

I’ve noticed that every game I’ve uploaded often gets downrated by a large number of people early on. After talking to other developers, it seems pretty universal, and it sounds like people recruit many others to downrate the new games in order to keep their higher in rankings / the front page.

Overall I’m wondering if this is something Kongregate is aware of, and whether there is anything that can be done. The main reason is that I am noticing it with a much higher rate with a game I recently released. In a short period of time, I will see the rating just drop, along with every single comment getting downvoted many times (for example all the comments will be about +7, then 10 minutes later they are all -1 and the overall score is much lower). It seems that this wouldn’t happen legitimately. I can understand the rating going down, but from previous experience, large groups of people don’t legitimately go in and rate down every single comment in a game in a short period of time along with rating it a 1 (especially without posting a comment mentioning why they don’t like the game).

Is this something other developers here notice? Is there anything that can be done about it? Am I completely paranoid and it’s all in my head?

Thanks! Hopefully I don’t sound like I’m whining too much. I’m just hoping Kongregate doesn’t become a war of who can get the most illegitimate votes, rather than letting the general audience decide (especially since the rating early on determines how well the game does overall).
