Topic: Kongregate / Kongrefeint: My First Spreadsheet Championship (preview video)

It’s story time guys, and today, I have a big one to share with you.

The story begins in April of 2012.

We flash back four years, to find yours truly, on the brink of elimination while playing in the fourth round of WiiPlayer’s Kompetition tournament.

It was Give Up Robot, that did me in…that’s all I can say. :(

Disheartened by my lackluster performance. I decided that it was time for me to step it up.

I signed-up for the next spreadsheet tournament, knowing that there was a lot on the line. Not only is it a big one (being the 25th edition.) But I’m also aware that my hourglass for winning one of these tournaments is running out.

At 22 years old, I know that I’m nearing the end of my prime as a gaming competitor. I need to win this championship before the window closes for good.

Resolved, I enter Kongrefeint with the belief that I’ll win.

Much to my surprise, Asmodous, the tournament host, starts us off with a game that is right in my wheelhouse. He picks Fancy Pants.

But there’s a catch. Asmodous, wants us to speed-run the game in under three minutes. That’s the minimum standard for qualifying in. I’ve never attempted a speed-run of this game before. It takes me several tries before I’m able to make the cut.

Normally, I’d be satisfied with that. This was only the qualifying round and there’s no risk of falling behind the red line.

I think back to The Kompetition. I remember how VideoGames, had torn through those early rounds. Placing 1st, 2nd, or 4th every time, until he eventually won the tournament.

I could have been like that. I even had an opportunity to take the lead during the second round. Instead, I chose to put in a B level effort and found myself out of it early.

My eyes narrow.

“Not this time.” I tell myself. “This time things WILL be different.”

I go to work on securing first place. I’ve got a fellow competitor who’s trying to do the same thing. Fusha, a former spreadsheet champion himself. Just like me, Fusha wants to declare himself right from the start. The only problem is that he’s competing against a guy who’s hungrier and crazier than him. I also pack a slightly larger arsenal.

I kick my game up a notch and go to work on optimizing my route. Studying youtube videos of other speedruns, I begin to map out a course to guarantee myself first place. Armed with a solid game plan, I sit down and proceed to
play the game until I can beat it in my sleep.

Next, I go to work on putting together the run that I need. The dream run that will ruin anyone’s hope of catching me this round. It take me a few hours but eventually I pull out a 157.

Fusha, sees how far I’m willing to take this and decides not to challenge me further.

It’s only the qualifying round but I’m already in full force. Determined that I’ll win. Determined that I won’t bag it this time. I know deep down that this title has my name on it. It may be my last opportunity at a tournament (this sized.) I promise myself that no matter what it takes, I’m going to find a way to win.

In this video Kongrefeint: My First Spreadsheet Championship

I describe the experience of what it was like for me playing in the tournament. The long days and sometimes nights of grinding it out against some of the best players on the
forum. The final few rounds were just brutal. It’s difficult for me to even put into words the amount of insanity that went into reaching the final round and then winning the championship with Blizzard and VG, just a few days later.

I hope you guys, enjoy this preview video. Let me know if this is of interest to you.

Topic: Kongregate / What year marked the peak of Flash Gaming?

Is this an obituary or something?! The only reason that flash gaming activity has been dying is because nobody is doing anything interesting with it.

Heck, there’s an entire community dedicated to speed-running old video games. If that can generate interest in the year 2016, then there’s no reason why flash gaming couldn’t make a resurgence.

Pre 2011: AG>Kong in terms of their players.

2012-present: Kong much stronger than AG.

Amazing job Best! Congrats on bringing the tournament count to 50.

If there’s a 51st tournament, I will join it. It will be my last one but I would like to compete with you guys one last time!

From what I can tell, the flash gaming tournaments have died across the web. Armor Games is obviously the best place to start, but we’re going to need to bring in people from other forums like Newgrounds (if this is going to survive long term.)

How about naming our team “The Kongregate Assassins”?

I can’t really say this without looking like kind of a whiny bitch, but Josh, if you feel you have such a good idea about how to revive tournaments, why don’t you host it yourself? Unless I’m very much mistaken, nobody really 1) is ready and 2) has a potential claim on the next spot, except for maybe you (says delayed in the OP.) I’d be willing to help where needed, but as you apparently know EXACTLY how to start them up again, I feel you should hold the reins.

I really can’t commit the time to it, as much as I would like to. And I wouldn’t start off with another spreadsheet. But rather a forum vs forum competition. We need to rebuild the interest across the internet and get some new blood in here.

Here’s my idea in a nutshell.

Step 1: Get a group of Kong’s best gamers together (that or the most dedicated players.) These are the people who genuinely want to move forward with the competitions.

Step 2: We go onto other flash gaming websites and encourage some of the locals to build a team for themselves.

Step 3: The group of us challenge them to a match. We try to beat them at their own games (call it an “away game”) and then they can come to Kong and challenge us at our games (a “home game.”)

Step 4: Keep track of the results for who is winning and who is losing.

The whole idea is to network here, guys. :) We’re awesome at what we do, and they need to know it. More-over we want to share this idea with other people and let them experience it too!

The problem with tournaments is, as Blizzard says, so few people join now. The people that do join, have played the last dozen or more tournaments, so they’re already really good at the most commonly used games. On top of that, everything is taken really, really seriously.

a.k.a. it’s not fun for anyone that wants to do a tournament casually.

Competitions are supposed to be taken seriously. That’s the whole point.

When I compete against someone, I give absolutely everything that I’ve got. I want to be tested, I want be pushed, I want them to try to obliterate me, because that’s what I’m going to do to them if they don’t.

Hell, I use to travel from forum to forum looking for someone who could beat me. I finally found that when I came here (hence, I haven’t left.)

Read these comments if you think that gaming tourney interest is dead:

evilsweetblock

“I see you are a very experienced gamer, and I just want to congratulate you real quick for making this tournament experience for the mass of us. I would like to join that said tournament if there is any open room, and test my hands at the glory of gaming.”

asher

I’d be interested in getting your video’s about kongregate tournaments, I think I’m decently well off currently, but I’d like to hear what you have to say that could possibly help me improve.

Anybody still think it’s dead?! Tell you what, if you’d like to get involved in gaming competitions (and you’re willing to work for it) drop me a line. I’ll tell you EXACTLY how to start them up again, but I only want to talk to the motivated people. None of this ban shawner, best, blizzard, and everyone else crap!

If you’re willing to advertise this stuff and work with other people to rebuild the community, there’s no reason why you can’t have it back up and running within 3 weeks.

I really want to help, but I’m not going to waste my time!

Again, if you seriously care about this, PM me.

Honestly, the ideas have become oversaturated. I’ve seen the same ideas used again, and again, and again. Nobody is willing to take a chance on something different.

Why doesn’t Kongregate host a money tournament? Why not invite people from another forum to compete? Why not host a series of smaller tournaments, where the winners play each other? Or a live competition, where the players submit a recording of the game to their YouTube channels and the player with the best time wins.

The tournaments are dead because no one is doing anything interesting.

neer ends well fer anyone eh

btw (INTER)NATIONAL GREG GAMES BEST TOURNEY 2015
the parentheses never did make sense

That was the worst run tournament that I have ever participated in. I was embarrassed to be a part of it.

I put in 8 hours to get the top score and the host disqualified it without even telling me!

The (INTER)NATIONAL Greg Games was an absolute joke.

What is the difference between winning and losing? Specifically, what separates the winner from the loser?

In my opinion, it usually comes down to 3 things: determination/perseverance, time to practice, and talent.

There’s also a concept which is frequently overlooked called “raising your standard.” You may be facing an opponent who is better than you in terms of their skill. But raising your own expectations has an interesting way of leveling the playing field.

If you expect a score out of yourself, that’s on level with what they typically produce. It can change the outcome of the match.

See, last round Ruroken was playing Josh, and this round the winner was going to play you/Wii but neither of them posted anything, so that’s what the redemption round is for. Whoever wins redemption gets to fite you.

I think Shawner will be in trouble if he has to face me. My “inactive strategy” is tearing my opponents to shreds.

Just don’t submit a score.

I’m really not enjoying the tournament much right now and I don’t want to waste more time arguing about this.

I’m going to drop out.

Good luck to everyone left.

Lou, no, if you win at Edgey and Ruro wins at ZM you still win.

Josh, it was obvious that by “score” I meant total of the round, like if you had an actual extension. You didn’t tie his score, you got 55 seconds behind.

I beat his score on Achievement Unlocked and failed to do so on Lint. That would have resulted in a tie.

You never specified that both scores had to be beaten. I didn’t break them both, so it’s fair to not award me the incentive. But I shouldn’t be penalized either!

What are you talking about? I did beat his score and you never said I had to beat them both.

Since you’re so upset about this, you have 24 hours to beat Dark’s score for last round. If you make it (which I’m pretty sure you won’t) I’ll give you something extra on a later round.

Penalizing me for tying his score is cheap. What grounds do you have to penalize me on?

And I had already picked the first nine levels of Mr. Bounce for my speed run.

I’d like to use Mr.Bounce as the challenge game. Fastest times in the first 9 levels.

I had absolutely no time to play today.:(

Here’s the first one.

My computer seems to have some kind of a problem with Lint. I’m not sure why but it often freezes up when I load it.

It only started doing this a few days ago. That’s why I didn’t request a game change.

Because you already had 7 days apart from it.

It’s not the duration of the round that’s the problem. Against certain players, you have to know what’s going on in the last few hours.

Of course it helps to have an extremely high score in the first place. But even then, you’re still at a disadvantage if they know what your final score is.

1. It’s only a major holiday in one country of over 100.
2. It’s been on that date for over a week, so why are you asking that now?
3. Because that’s how the timing worked out?
