Yeah, using the flamethrower to clear acid puddles is pretty key.

Yet another poem.
I agree with him. I’m a pretty big fan of Bukowski, and in addition to just being fantastic all around, his formatting is really incredible in itself. Very often he’ll draw attention to a word in the middle of a sentence by just putting it on its own line and it has a pretty fantastic effect.

Not running an Ad-blocker.
We’re working on figuring out what the OP is running into (not having an adblocker and seeing those ads) but K+ users definitely shouldn’t be seeing them and we figured out what happened and we’re gonna fix it.

Which Final Fantasy do you think is the best?
I can’t believe VI hasn’t been mentioned once in this thread yet. It’s easily my favorite FF (with IX close behind) and in my top 10 games of all time. I haven’t played XII yet, though. I probably should get around to that sometime.

Anyone a harvest moon fan?
I played Harvest Moon and Harvest Moon 64 an insane amount. They were easily 2 of my favorite games growing up. I haven’t played any of the releases since then, really. I’m considering picking up Rune Factory, but don’t play games all that much these days.

Badge Suggestions!
So there are 3 badges up on Mission in Space for now. There’s going to be a fourth one, but we’re not sure whether this would be a great candidate for an impossible. If it did get an imp, it’d be for a diamond on every level and all challenges completed (not all badges, just the 6 challenges). I’m thinking it may be on the easy side of what we’d want for impossibles, in which case it’d get a hard for 12 diamonds and ignore the challenges. We were just wondering what you guys thought about it before we add the 4th.

Hey! Are you running an ad-blocker?
There’s already a pretty developed conversation about this very topic going on here. As such, I’m going to lock this topic, and you’re more than free to post your thoughts in the existing topic.
Btw: Awesome CvS2 avatar.

Broken badges
Are you using the ?debug_level=4 read-out to see if they’re loading/sending statistics at all? I’m going to go through and check out these games (it’s proooooobably my job), but if you’re checking it out anyway, using the debug readout is the best way to go about it.

[Gallery] Raw's Pretty Pink Palace
Bumpity bump.
And…. this is what happens when I have more than 24 hours to produce a final product. I just went back in and tidied it up a bit.

Edit: The guy went ahead and printed a copy, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

Best of 2011
I know saying this probably won’t actually change anyone’s opinions of what’s going on, but there definitely wasn’t some conspiracy (or kongspiracy???) to get Tyrant in the quest. We expanded the list of games you could vote on so that there would be a higher chance that you could vote on your favorite game of the year. This isn’t the first time we’ve put a multiplayer game on the best of 20XX quest (Starfighter (back when it was multiplayer), Platform Racing 2, and Elements) nor was it the first time we put a game with kreds in the quest (Bloons TD 4). We’d like to expand the list of games that get voted on even more, but at a certain point it becomes too much and hard/impossible to coordinate.
The idea of doing categories is interesting, but would probably depend on what we do for polling. It would also get a little complicated because of how we do categories with tags (since we wouldn’t want a category for best point and click (probably), but we’d have to instead filter those into adventure games manually).

I may be wrong, but I think the squid/cuttlefish was done in Photoshop, not a 3D modelling program.

That was the inspiration for doing thread voting this year. While some poll services do an ok job of it, it’s possible to game any system, but we have a lot of control over our system so it’s (hopefully!) harder to game since we govern it, as opposed to a poll service hosted elsewhere. Given the volume of votes this year, and the hope that we’ll get several times this amount next year, we’ll probably have to go with some kind of poll system.

The Kongregate general population simply likes some genres more than others
I’m half-playing devil’s advocate here, but if the quest is there for anyone, wouldn’t it be there for the Kongregate general population?

3D Renders/Models/Digital Paintings/Vector Graphics made by me. (GDC's portfolio thread)
I like the shading and texturing a good deal, especially around the eye. The shape and composition is also pretty good.
The thing I’m most confused about, and probably the most prominent part of the piece, is the lighting. If you didn’t have the blue lines on there (which appear to be your intended light source), I’d say that you had a strong light from the top left and a softer diffused light coming from the top right. However, since it’s at the bottom of the ocean, and you said it’s super dark, those light sources probably shouldn’t exist. If the light is actually coming from the creature, especially if it’s coming from the blue lines, then you’d have to completely re-do the shading on him. It would be a super interesting project to try to do lighting like that, but as it is it doesn’t really mesh. The area right above his eye is super dark, almost black, but has the glowing blue lines running right through it. Also, the lack of shading on the blue lines themselves make them look extremely flat, especially compared to the shading on the squid itself. Even if they are emitting light, there would still be some notable shading on them, as some would be further away from the viewer, and some would be closer. Lastly, it might be more interesting if the light coming from the lines would be more potent the closer to the center of the blue stripes they came from. Taking a page from the series that popularized glowing lines on figures, you can see in this Tron poster that the light in the center of the stripes brighter than the light around the edges of it. This adds some depth and realism to it. As it is, it looks like you drew a design in blue on top of a finished image, lowered its opacity, maybe set a blending mode, and blurred it or a duplicate layer to add the glow effect. If you didn’t want to redo the lighting on the squid completely, I think it’d look best if you got rid of the blue bits.

If you guys have any constructive ideas for how to make the system better for next year, I’d love to hear them. “Let us vote on all of them” probably isn’t the way to go. We had ~870 total votes this year (I think we’ll work on doing more promotion for the voting next year, but that’s still a substantial increase from last year), but that’s a fraction of the amount of ratings that any one of these 20 games have received. While people definitely feel more involved by posting in these threads and voting, I don’t really think it’s fair to ignore tens of thousands of “votes” in the form of ratings. “I don’t like the games” also probably isn’t extremely constructive, as it’s obvious that a majority of the people on the site liked them, and even if most of the people who post in this thread agree that they’re not fun/good/etc, the quest is given to everyone on the site, not just people who frequent the forums (who might not be completely representative of the average Kongregate user).

So what? I have alts that are 4 years old, is that enough proof or did you make IP checks also?
Yes, I checked for alts. Those results are squeaky clean.

I eliminated a bunch of votes due to using alts, but they didn’t really affect any one game more than others to any real extent. The vast majority of the users on the site don’t use the forums at all, but they found out about the voting due to our newsletter, facebook, etc and came here to vote. Just because they hadn’t posted before doesn’t mean they’re alts. Most of the first time posters had accounts that were 1-3 years old.

And it’s up! The games included in the quest are Kingdom Rush, Learn to Fly 2, Rebuild 2, Cursed Treasure: Level Pack, Elephant Quest, Villainous, Tyrant, RPG Shooter: Starwish, Creeper World 2: Academy, Burrito Bison, with the last 4 being the ones voted in by all you guys. You can go here to get started on the quest!
(A few people seemed to have earned it early because of some technical issues, but everything should be cleared up now.)

Another Poem.
Sure, but the format still wouldn’t be proper. Just because it’s free that doesn’t mean you can completely disobey grammar altogether. I also didn’t bother to check the content much, I just googled “How to write poetry” and clicked the third link.
Well, I’d disagree. Several of the more critically acclaimed writers and poets have a complete disregard for all kinds of rules of language. But, just like in visual arts, it does help to stay to some semblance of accepted guidelines while you’re learning the rules, then decisively break them later for effect. I’m not saying that he should leave out all punctuation and spaces, but it’s fine to bend the rules from time to time.
