Acclaim, of course everyone knows this game company for it’s infamous konami code, which was left in the game Gradius by mistake due to an accounting error and a mishap with the company janitor. Ah, good times.

Sounds like it had an installer, but it didn’t work completely / correctly. Is there a law against that? Are you and the developer subject to the same laws? What country are each of you in? Are you prepared to demonstrate that you have suffered damages as a result of the poorly functioning installer? Are you prepared to demonstrate a monetary value associated with those damages?

Just some food for thought.

Topic: Technical Support / OMG please help me learn to fix my save games!!!

I worked as tech support in a major company for about 5 years. I supported over 8000 computer users.

When I showed up to fix someones problem, the most common hypothesis offered by the user for why their computer was broken was “i think it has a virus”. This was true exactly zero times.

While I was there we did have a few virus out breaks, 2 or 3 I think. It wasn’t many. These outbreaks affected 70-80% of the computers. In every single case, the users never knew they had a virus until we told them.

A good rule of thumb, “if you can detect the problem, it’s probably not a virus.”

Wait, even if I give my password to someone I met on the internet and later on they do things I don’t want them to do with my account? I can’t say it’s hacked then?

Topic: Call of Gods / Gift deception? - Call of Gods devs lied for weeks about event

Also, ser, at chances that low, unless the devs are using double precision numbers to represent their chances (which they probably aren’t because each “double precision” variable require much more memory than a “float” variable — and there are a lot of these variables in the game), then a value of .00000001 % is going to get treated as “0” when the computer does its math. It’s a phenomenon called ‘floating point error’ and it happens at extremely small values like that. So, even though the code may read 1.0 x e-8 (which is actually 1.0 x e-10 because its a percent), computationally, it’s just 0.

Topic: Kongregate / Define the perfect MMORPG.

OP specifically asked if it was a good idea to throw everything into an MMO and call it done. Our answers are relevant.

Short version: no, you can’t make a game everyone likes
Long version: if you want to double your development time / cost by working on something that only a fraction of your players will like, you can. If you want to take that same time / cost and work on something that a majority of your players will like, it’s probably a better idea.

Topic: Kongregate / Define the perfect MMORPG.

Games are made by businesses. Development time costs money. So say you are buildng an “MMO with teh everything!”. Great idea. Now lets look closer. Given that any given feature, say “mortal kombat like melee” is only going to appeal to 5% of the target audience, is that really a good investment of your development dollars? As opposed to say spending that money developing content that will appeal to 95% of your players? It’s a simple economic choice. Businesses (and even more so indie developers) have limited time and money to develop a game. It is a waste of both to focus on a game play mechanic that doesn’t appeal to your core audience.

If you are looking to play an arcade shooter, do you really want farmville style mechanics for gathering money to upgrade your ship? Or do you just want to blast the crap outta things (because thats why you play arcade shooters) and be rewarded with resources for blasting the crap outta things?

Making games is a lot more complicated than just putting together a wish-list of game mechanics.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Meelee issue

Any dumbass can pull a trigger. Knives at least require the person to be fairly aggressive and strong to use. Or at least have the courage to get within hitting-back distance. Long blade weapons require a fair amount of skill to be even moderately effective, and they still require you to get dangerously close to the target. You can kill a person with anything. Anything. Guns just lower the barrier to entry.

Topic: Kongregate / abandonware art

Originally posted by egos0:

…if there are no owner or the owner dont know he have it like a big majority of video game art material…. the copyright dont serve anyone

First of all, how do you know there is no owner? Is this something you have a reason to believe [you can read ‘reason’ as another word for ‘proof’], or is this just something you THINK is true, given your vast knowledge of video game IP, copyright law, and the complete content of the public domain?

Second of all, whether a copyright is serving anyone is irrelevant. I hold the copyright on a number of RPG’s and unfortunately I’m not making any money off of it. This means the copyright isn’t “serving” me, so by your argument, you could make use of my IP. That, is horse crap. $1000 under my pillow isn’t doing my any good either, but it’s still mine.

Finally, the instant and I mean literally the instant, you write, draw, or otherwise create something, that work IS copyrighted. It is. No argument. So, unless you have express written permission to use something, then you can’t use it. For example, if something is published on a web page, and the author has indicated it is one of the Creative Commons copyrights, then you can use it under the conditions of the specific Creative Commons copyright. BUT, being unable to find a copyright, unable to find the copyright holder, unable to find the work in use, unable to find the work still being published, unable to find the work for sale, or unable to find the work at all, NONE of those conditions will allow you to use someone else’s work.

Simple rule: If you didn’t make it, or purchase the right to use it, then you CAN’T use it. It’s really not that complicated.

Yea, right that’s not why you’re spamming posting here. But whatever. One way to legitimately get your link out there, is to put it in your signature and then be an active helpful participant in the forums. Rather than just spamming “hey guys I made a game here, how should i advertise it, not that I’m trying to advertise it now” everywhere.

Since Kong doesn’t have signatures, this means you’d want to do this on other forums (where you are an active contributing participant). Then people will think “wow what a great helpful guy. Oh, there’s a link to his game in his signature. I bet that’s interesting. Let’s have a look!”

Let’s be realistic. There aren’t any hackers on Kongregate.

There are people who use cheat engine programs and there are people who are victims of telling other people their passwords or having poor password security.

No one is going around using a bot to spam an account looking for a password, or hacking into Kongregate’s servers to steal passwords.

The set of people on Kongregate (and the internet) that fail to understand this distinction overlaps almost perfectly with the set of people that scream “HACKERZ HAZ GOTZ ME WIT THERE (sic) HAX!” the loudest. Which, entertainingly enough, is almost immediately followed up with a statement roughly along the lines of “[person A] gained my trust [somehow] and I gave them my password. …. I WUZ HACKED!!!!”

I told you! Who contacted you, Treyarch?

Do you think Duracell will sue me for using their battery design in my new game?

Best to stay safe, just change it a bit or make your own.

True that. I don’t really think they will care though. Like, who would sue someone for having a picture of a battery in their game?!

In order to maintain copyrights, a company must actively pursue known copyright violations. Otherwise it can be claimed that the copyright has been abandoned and then anyone can start using Duracell’s trade dress.

This means it IS in their best interest to sue you (or at least send you a Cease-And-Desist). And because Duracell is a big company with many lawyers in their employ, and you are … just a guy … with 0 lawyers, then it’s also a low cost, zero risk option because they know they will win.

Plus, the fact that you want to use their copyright and trade dress effectively undermines your implied argument that it isn’t worth anything. If it wasn’t worth anything, then why do you want to use it? Make your own battery. It’s not like the geometry is complicated. And a fake ‘battery’ logo is pretty easy to whip up as well.

Topic: General Gaming / Tabletop RPGs

D&D is a great game. D&D 4.0 is made to appeal to casual gamers. 3.0/3.5 is the way to go.

To start playing, you will need the following:
1) Dungeon Master’s Guide (called the DMG), originally this was ~ $35
2) Player’s Handbook (sometimes called the PHB), originally around $30
3) a set of polyhedral dice (these are dice with more sides than a standard ‘square’), typically around ~$5-12

That’s the bare minimum you need to play. After that, I would recommend picking up
1) the Monster Manual (called MM or MMI in print), originally ~ $30.
2) I would also recommend at least one other player in your group get a copy of the Player’s Handbook

Finally, regarding game length. You can literally sit and ‘play’ for as long or as short an amount of time as you want. Play for 30 min, play for 6 hours. Up to you and your group. The beauty is that your ‘game’ can run as long as you want, so when you stop playing for the day, its basically like pausing a video game. The game doesn’t have to end, just your game session.

Also, D&D is set in a fantasy setting with mythic beasts and magic. There are other genres of role playing games out there as well. You can play in the far future, in a steam punk setting, postapocalypse, Orwellian dystopias, high-tech cybernetic laden eras, Robotech-esque anime-style settings, alternate histories, alternate regions of the world, and various historical time periods, etc. Whatever you can image really.

I hope you get into it, and I hope you have a lot of fun!
