Topic: Game Design / Zombies! The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

My policies on zombie games are this: If you’re going to make a zombie game, make damn sure it feels like a friggen’ zombie game. Do not make a Puzzle Quest-esque game about fighting zombies, it doesn’t work. (This game actually exists)

There’s some neat innovation in zombie games where it totally works to make it a zombie game. Highway of the Dead, for example, was totally awesome and I applaud it for what it did. Even pretty much cliche zombie games can be badass, take Left 4 Dead for example. That said I do recognize that there are some people that just slap the word zombie onto their games to gain an extra star on their rating and I’m not fond of said games.

Pros:
That feel of you against the horde… you against the world, alone, trying your best just to survive. Pull it off right and it’s pretty damn awesome.

The term “zombie” is pretty loose, and you can get creative with the enemy types, the problem is just that so few developers do. Just look at Left 4 Dead though, it can work.

Instant motivation/stock story. Let’s be honest, sometimes you don’t want to make a humongous backstory behind your game. Few flash devs do. It’s not a great thing but hell, as far as stock backstories go, this is a pretty good one for the flash community.

Cons:
If done lazily or just slapped on, it sucks.

Topic: Game Design / [Feedback] Tribulation - A Fast Paced Zombie Game

I’m more of a gameplay kind of guy so expect more of a general/design critique than a bug-hunt from me.

Enemies are a bit monotonous. Just a few reskins of zombies, plus some faster birds. I know it’s a zombie game but add in a few unique ones. A few that jump right into where you’re running, for example. Maybe ones that hide under trees and jump out at you, but are weak and can be taken out pretty easily if you think ahead. Maybe the blood from the green guys should be poisonous. Maybe some should come in closely bundled groups right from the spawning. Stuff like that would shake things up big time.

Well, maybe it’s just me, but the upgrades seem a bit samey. IMO the upgrades should have a lot more variety, like “less firing spread on rifles” and whatnot.

Personally… I’d like headshots. It would give us a much better reason to use rifles, plus it’s just more satisfying to kill a zed by blowing its head off than by whittling its health down.

Totally weird request, I know, but the guns and the damage should really feel a bit more powerful. Make the zombies react to being shot, for example. A bit of a shake or a stutter would do nicely. Maybe make the shooting sounds a bit louder. Also, as a personal preference, if it’s going to be a pump action shotgun, make sure to add in that “ka-klik” noise between shots. I also think that, in general (at least for the first few weapons) they should be a bit slower but a bit more powerful, especially the shotgun.

Make the gameplay have a few more ups and downs. If I’m just fighting against one constant wave that’s slowly building up I get a bit bored. There’s a reason the wave-based zombie style caught on, and that’s because it just tends to captivate the player a lot more. Plus it lets you do some more fun design stuff, like special waves with only certain types of enemies and whatnot.

I’d say the zombies should be a bit faster so the player at least has some threat from them. Currently you just have to gather them up in one ball and walk away and you can survive indefinitely. They should also spread out a bit, maybe a few should try to flank your guy. There you go, there’s another zombie type right there, flankers.

I haven’t experienced it myself, but from what I’ve heard you’ll pretty much only use one type of gun, and only the most advanced version of it you can afford for the bulk of the game. That should really change. Give us more reason to use a variety of weaponry. This will probably come naturally as you add more zombie types to the game, but if not, tweak the weapons around to accentuate their flaws and their strengths. Shotgun can be slower but stronger and shoot more bullets per shot, rifle can reload more quickly and get headshots more easily… yeh that sort of stuff.

That said, it seems like a pretty good start. Should be interesting to see the final result!

Oh, one more thing, though this doesn’t have to carry over to the finished game: For future testing, you should probably keep the prices of the weapons quite low so that I don’t have to play a beta for a rather long time to get the megaweapon so I can tell you what I think of it. XP

I don’t exactly have years of experience writing for games, but don’t get me wrong, I’ve got the stuff for it. Ask Truefire, I’ve been working with him on a game for a while now, and I’m pretty passionate about it. A basic theme would be nice to get this project started… I’m also interested in enemy design and gameplay balancing (as well as weapon design, if we decide to make it a shooter. Here’s hoping we do!). Hope this works out well! Can’t wait to see the result!

The question is too ambiguous… mebbe it should be like, “Which would win, the death star, or the eponymous halo?”
We don’t even know what time periods they’d be in or if they’d still be warring with each other, so any point for either side would be debatable in the scenario we’re given.

Topic: Kongregate / [VOTE] Worst badge choice ever

Dream World / Hard / Lucid Dreamer (Or Golden Hero… Heck, all of them, this is a completely horrible game)

(Why the heck has nobody suggested this yet? It’s the most awful game on Kongregate and it has the longest endurance badge of all. It’s grinding, laughing at the absolutely horrible graphics, and solving a few repetitive and boring puzzles for friggen weeks on end, or coughing up way more cash than this horrible faux-MMO deserves…)

So many people seem to be confusing “worst choice” with “hardest to receive.” Thunderous OPEC Guardian was fun as heck, although a bit of endurance went into it.

Correction, it would seem that level 51 requires 18185. I’m level 50 right now, with 17690 points, and I’m 495 from level 51. Just saying. Not sure what the reason is, but yeh.

You’re talking about the sound that the bullets make when they hit metal? That’s used in tons of games, it’s not a rare sound effect. Sound effects aren’t the sole property of the first devs to use them, and the same goes for songs. Sound effects like the Willhelm scream and songs like Yakety Sax are creative commons, which means that they can be used without need for permission. Most sound effects you hear in games these days are ones that can be used by any developer for free. The music tends to require the author to be credited, but the sound effects are usually free.

Topic: Transformice / How to hack. Please read first post.

Hacking is still hacking, it takes away the challenge for all of us, and if you need to hack to be a decent shaman, become a better shaman. The only time I’d approve of hacking would be to get rid of the troll levels that lag you so bad that you freeze up and can’t downvote them.

By the game glitch one that was perma’d, do you mean the one where you have to jump through walls by hitting lava? What’s so bad about that one? There were plenty of other levels that were based on glitches-any level that requires you to wall jump, jump in midair, or hold up to avoid being killed by lava also require you to exploit glitches. Transformice was made great by the effective glitches, so what’s wrong with someone finding a new one? I certainly agree that something should be done about the levels that lag you to death, but the best we can do right now is count on epic shamans to keep us alive until then or contact Transformice’s mods and admins, they’ll handle it quickly.

You sound like a perfect match for a game I’m making with some friends, we’ll need a large variety of music for a rather large game as well as some sound effects that would probably be rather unusual. We’re not too far into the game right now and it could take a while, although we do have a smaller game that we’re working on at the moment.
