Can I ask why the matches are in the Europe server?

I know right, here in Not Zimbabwe the connection is very slow.
I did actually play woon (not woon) on the Asian server (in direct violation of the rules I know, but the lag was epic come on) and it didn’t make any noticeable difference.

No-one seems to be around when I’m available to play. And lag seems to affect all of my matches one way or another anyway. Guess I’m on the wrong side of the planet.

Just out of curiosity, how many hours do you think you have put into getting those times? :P

Much less time than I ever spent playing Gemcrap. Or so it feels. Time’s relative, right?

Tcl’s great. No types, no compilers. Nice & simple. Sorry about the total lack of comments. Basically the algorithm makes a ranked tree structure with the fastest dog at the root node, and then “zips” it into a single line by repeatedly retrieving the 5 likeliest fastest dogs (based on tree depth and distance from the current root) and racing them.

Greg’s requirement is 3.8, not 3.80. Obviously the difference in this case is very relevant.

I actually really liked the dog question. In fact I just wrote a short script that will completely sort 25 dogs from fastest to slowest by racing them 5 at a time. Takes 16-18 races usually.

It’s not about the interpretation of “accurately”, it’s about the interpretation of “could”.

What is the minimum amount of races in which you could accurately find the 3 fastest dogs?

I’m saying you “could” find the 3 fastest dogs with 6 races.

If the question instead read something like

What is the minimum amount of races you would need to accurately find the 3 fastest dogs?

then I admit my solution would be insufficient.

Step 1: race any 5 dogs
Step 2: assume you got lucky and the 3 fastest dogs were in that race.
Step 3: take the third fastest dog and race him against the remaining 20 dogs. This takes 5 races.
Step 4: if that dog wins all his remaining races, then we’re done. The 3 fastest dogs are confirmed as being the 3 fastest dogs from the first race. 100% accurate.

Feel like I’m repeating myself here

But I am saying you can be sure of the 3 fastest dogs in 6 races. Without any guessing.
