Topic: Collaborations / Cheap SDK for distributing flash games as desktop app

I’m considering creating a kind of SDK for developers that would like to distribute their flash games as full screen executables. The usage would usually be to create extra levels for games under that format and propose users to pay to download them as desktop app. Projector already exists to do this, but is not appropriate for games as flash is too slow to play fast on large resolutions.

This SDK would be derived from the technology I built for my now free swiffout extension that allows players to play full screen anywhere without horrible lags. I already talked about it on the kong forums here : http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/670?page=5 , or you can install it from http://swiffout.com if you want to test it.

I talked to a game dev who was really interested into licensing the technology for creating full screen flash executable specifically targeted at games at a much cheaper rate that swfkit is (the express version is $100 ).

I have some rework to do first, so I was wondering if some of you would be interested too and if you are, what you think would be a good price for that service. You can contact me by email at contact@grownsoftware.com if you prefer.

If you’re interested in knowing how this evolve and when it releases, drop me a email as well with ‘just for info for swiffout app’ in the body. I’ll warn you of progress.

Topic: Technical Support / Protector IV full screen ?

I updated my extension SwiffOut and add them to google and mozilla store. They should work more seamlessly now. If you had previously installed the setup version (the .exe) you can now get rid of it and just install the autonomous version, it’s better as they can autoupdate. They are also better, some corner cases didn’t work well. And it’s no longer a shareware, it’s just free now.

Don’t forget to add a comment and to vote if you like them. It helps others to find them.

What I could do is allow to resize the window when not in fullscreen, then when you switch to full screen, use that size instead of the original one. It might not work with every game, but I might add this at a point. Probably not now, my focus is still on getting this autonomous IE and Firefox extension to work.

SwiffOut the extension for playing in very good full screen is now on the google extension store :

https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/jnppoimalombohimhmfmpldimliadlal

I fixed the size issue. The detection is now native (I read the flash file format ) and should always work.

I will try to publish the autonomous extension for IE and Firefox, but IE and Firefox extension are harder to make… You can still get the all in one package at http://swiffout.com (which contains IE and Firefox support )

I checked everything again, found some bugs, but none seems related to your problem. Contact me if you want to investigate further.

Edit : if you landed here by clicking on the last page of the thread like I do, here is a summary :

Some would find nice to play kongregate games fullscreen. So you probably are as you clicked this thread. Given that the thread started in 2007 and kongregate didn’t move, I suppose an option won’t probably happens anytime.

Some people also argued that scaling flash is not a good solution because firstly not all games are scalable and secondly because flash is not hardware accelerated and that graphical games are slowed down seriously.

It’s possible to use the following extensions to play fullscreen : Flash Game Maximizer, Better Kongregate, this script or SwiffOut

SwiffOut is an IE, Firefox, Chrome compatible application I developed that solve the scaling and performance issue by switching resolution and launching the game in true fullscreen mode as an autonomous application. SwiffOut is a $3 app that you can also get for free if you are a flash game developer or a blogger willing to write a review. Yes I’m an horrible a capitalist, but this is an ongoing work and it is taking me a lot of time. Your support help me to continue. You can get it here : http://swiffout.com

If you find grammar mistakes, I’m sorry, but I’m french and do the best I can.

What browser did you use @djstatika ? May be I didn’t test it enough on that browser ?

Rings and async racing should now work with SwiffOut, so should many more games. DJStatika, I didn’t forgot you, the resolution selection is on its way but you should try this version anyway.

If you find others games that don’t work I’ll be happy to have a look and fix them if possible. You can get the new version here as usual.

Thanks for going that far anyway savagewolf. I think I have enough infos.

On the latest version of swiffout, you can right click the game area and uncheck “esc exit the game” option.

You are right rings and async racing doesn’t work. The failing part seems to be the detection of the flashvars. I should be able to fix it soon. I’ll add the selection of the flash if necessary.

@SavageWolf : could you type

start "" swiffout:swiffout_href=

in the cmd.exe equivalent in wine and see if something happens

@vegards, @djstatika can you try berzerks to see if it works correctly. I tried it and this one should work. I’ll contact you when I’ll be done with the resolution, but the screen keep staying black the issue is probably the detection.

Thank you all for the useful feedbacks

@Vegard can you try running it as an administrator. I think the setup is missing this.

@SavageWolf monitor might affect it if it doesn’t support low resolution. On my lcd screen some resolutions are not completly fullscreen, though not that small. Did you install swiffout in wine in linux ? I don’t know if it works.

Thanks, for useful feedback I’ll look at those this evening.

@djstatika : do you have that problem with all games ? If not which game didn’t work ? In the other case it could come from your monitor or graphic card, if SwiffOut can’t find a low enough resolution for the game. I’ve a future version that will allow to select the resolution to play, it will allow to check that. Can you mail me if you want to try it : contact at grownsoftware.com ?

@SavageWolf SwiffOut is an addon combined with a separate executable that can play games from any browser : That’s why it requires a setup. IE addons are C++ too anyway and Chrome extension are not capable of switching resolution. So I use a trick to tranfert it to a separate executable.

You’re right, I’m the developer. I’m not trying to cheat you with a program that doesn’t work. I think it is great, and at a time you have to tell others people about it if you want them to use it and eventually pay for it (but I’ll offer free licences if you have a blog and would like to blog about it, or if you have another good reason – if you are a Flash game developer, I can give you one too – that’s fair, I play your games for free ;), just tell me what game it is ) . I’ll add a sections about alternatives on the site, the site is very new and my project is out since less than a month.

@djstatika : I designed SwiffOut for playing fullscreen fast. I have a not very new PC, and playing fullscreen with FGM didn’t work. In a way, I cheat : SwiffOut didn’t maximize the games but it makes the pixels bigger.

I took Robot Wants Puppy as an example of something that works with SwiffOut that doesn’t work with any other maximizer. It will work with other Flixel games I suppose too and it won’t lag either because the screen resolution is adjusted, there is no extra pixels.

Robot Wants Puppy on the home doesn’t work with the script. It’s very easy to find games that didn’t work when just resizing the flash. With SwiffOut almost all games works fullscreen. I have detection issues on some sites, but I’m very good on that too, even if not perfect.
I’ve used alternatives and they work but I made SwiffOut to make flash games really feel like desktop games. It’s a bit hard too convince people to try it because it’s a difference in quality. If you have five minutes, test the free version here. It works without restrictions for 30 days, you have nothing to loose.

I’m french. I’ll try to find someone who can fix the mistakes. Better Kongregate or Flash Game Maximizer don’t switch resolution and they are Firefox only extensions. SwiffOut is better in that way :
It preserve the speed of the game and the aspect ratio. Final-ninja play great with it and others games too. I don’t think it’s possible with any other extension.

You can try SwiffOut that take care of switching to the most suitable resolution so it’ll work with unscalable bitmaps based game and keep enough cpu to get every games fast (I made it ). It’s an addon for IE, Firefox and Chrome.
