1st. Don’t be greedy. It’s not wise to lose 100 units only for 1 or 2 crystals. If you really want it, try using nukes or spies to lower your loss.
2nd. Conquer as much newbies as possible. Those who are with rank 1 (private I think) will have only 1-9 units. Sending one heavy range will take care of that. The colonies that are really small will probably have no units at all so you can send your spam squad.

4th. Relic isn’t something awesome. It just gives you 1k score (I think) and some resource bonus (I think because it was on old client). In other words – it’s not wise to charge with your all army at it.
5th (and last). Unit combinations helps a lot. If you read carefuly when building units, you will notice something like armor units are attacked first. So means they can protect other units. So to every range unit squads add a few armor units to defend them.

Using these tips and few others can help you get to higher rank.

P.S. Sleep is acctualy a good thing. Don’t get crazy about battledawn and play all day long.

Relic is 500 score per a relic and the 2nd thing when u start watch out for people with private because they could’ve hurried 30 units or more :)
