why not have a story based around something i think the game really needs, multiplayer.
100 years after the events of the second game, mages from different clans tried to learn each others magic but it didnt work however they did find out that by using the power of two mage they can combine their magic and create wonderful effects.
the new great mage saw this as a threat to his power and imposed marsal law, now members of clans can only talk to other members and they cant leave their cities. a group of mages form an underground resistance in hopes to overthrow the great mage and end the tyranny.
player is born 3 years later, you compete in the young mages competition, and after seeing you there both the great mages legion and the resistance contact you in hopes of you joining their cause.
you can either join the legion and fight to keep the world order and become a part of the politics involved or join the resistance and fight for freedom and a chance to become great mage yourself. that said if you join the legion you can become the great mage if you play the politics right. and just like the second game you can leave the group to join the other.
now the thing that differs from the seconds game is that you can have to mages join you as you journey around. and they fight with you or you can combine powers e.g.
darkwood/burning hill – fires a giant blood red fire ball that does huge damage and silences the opponents next turn.
or
poisonwater/greatsea – fires a stream of dark green water that applies 5 stacks of the poison and mana leak.
and clans from fire and water can combine e.g.
iceland/chaosdesert – sends a tornado of snow and sand at the enemy, an unblockable attack
the ideas for the combined effect can change, i just wanted to show my idea

aero because you can fly and shoot people further and faster than any other class
plus (despite what people say) the steam bolts would be very deadly

and i was thinking of a new mechanic for the game as your mage uses spells it should build up “transmutation” and when that bar is full your mage turns into an elemental form of their clan
poisonwater – a swamp elemental
greatsea – a water elemental
iceland – ice elemental
and so onand i think transmutation should remain after a battle so you can save it up for really challenging fightsand what i think this form should do is gives your bolts the effect of your clan(no cost) and something extra specific about that clan
burninghill – increase power by 2 and remove status effects each turn
chaosdesert – increase number of bolts by 1 and applies ‘twice’ each turn
darkwood – increase total health by 100 and regenerate health by 10 each turn. so on
i get that this is very overpowered but thats kind of the point so if your in a battle that you would lose no matter what transforming will help you win. i haven’t thought about how long you stay transformed but i think you should also be able to upgrade it so you remain on that form for longer

i like the ways you tweaked the clan fighting styles
but i think if you really want to have mix-matching of different clan abilities then say if a mage has one bolt effect then they can’t get another one
same with other abilities, imagine a mage with silence(darkwood), paralyze(poisonwater), freeze defend(iceland) and mana leaking bolts(greatsea)
they would just be too powerful
so i think clan specials should be leveled and a mage can only get one special from each level
