The full 999 waves Haunting endurance has been beaten in that level.

Rest assured you can win it at Glaring.

There is a bonus in specials at grade 7, from the component skills.
You need to compare gems both higher or lower than grade 7.

Non-standard combinations do exactly what you said, they trade some stats for other stats. After dozens of grades, you get a gem much stronger in the right area, but it’s not useful below g30, as it makes the gem lose firerate.

Correct, at higher level it’s basically EXP = WL^3

You gain nothing from non-standard combines under gem grade 30 (below the speedcap, basically), unless you use seriously specific stuff that gives you a tiiiiiny gain.

You can realistically reach WL 3500, several people (me included, in my non-pouch save) did.
It’s not difficult, once you get to WL 1k you steamroll any level anyway, if you know how to play.

Magician’s Pouch makes the game much more difficult if you want, finishing Y6 at max traits Haunting is very easy even without the pouch, but completing a (non Hatred) Haunting endurance is extremely difficult.

Have fun.

Topic: GemCraft - Chasing Shadows / What about double-bound gems?

At WL 1k, I’d expect you to enrage with 1k g1 for the first hundred(s) of waves (while you farm mana). You should be easily able to kill them with a bolt gem in trap.

It requires no more fortitude than enraging with one g1, just adjust the number of bombs dropped per click.

Topic: GemCraft - Chasing Shadows / About that black gem:

No, you understood how black works, but the 4th color penalty you get using white is not worth the extra hits you get if you start with a double bound gem.

The best way is to use only one bound color in each gem.

Topic: GemCraft - Chasing Shadows / About that black gem:

It’s not much about starting with a certain color, you can always start with a white gem and then redo it completely with a black component once you have mana for a, say, g35, the problem is the skills you choose before each level.

Personally I’d recommend going skills only white till you can consistently make g30 in ~10 waves, then switching to full black.

And what about starting out with a two white level 1’s and a black along with a couple of reds and my primary color? At this point that’s usually yellow and orange early on – later adding blue, purple and cyan. So, would a black/white mix be beneficial at this point?

WUUT???

@bnorthup: I made it in Mathematica, I can provide you the Notebook, but I doubt you can run it.

Red is better, but also a ton more difficult to get.
Grab Resonance first.

I used to dual boot Linux and Windows and used the same symlink trick, making Linux read into the Windows partition.

I have to say, though, Dropbox is a brilliant idea for extra safety and some minimal versioning.

Topic: GemCraft - Chasing Shadows / Slower killchain counter cooldown?

You missed the thread title, BLOONINCINERATOR, fragments are useful, but he was talking about the “Slower killchain counter cooldown” ones, which are utter crap.

Solid advice, though.

Short of using wGC, there is no easier way than making a pure g12 and then upgrading that repeatedly with U.

OK, I’m a total newbie. Just getting started and trying to level up as quickly as possible at this point. In the mid-50’s or so, WL-wise and find myself with some basic questions. Have no idea if these have been addressed before or not but I didn’t find any reference to them so – – here goes:

First, is there some sort of tutorial that addresses basic questions [but beyond the level of how to create/combine gems] like the one that’s available on the map page – but a bit more advanced? If there’s a list of such q & a, I would appreciate a link.

For instance:
Does poison still not stack?
Does it behoove me to hit a gem that’s socketed in a trap more than once with a bolt spell? As in, does IT stack?
What’s a good number of unspent mana points to hold at this stage? Are there skills that are preferable to pile on? I’m holding back in the neighborhood of 200 points at the moment and hitting hard on mana stream 15 and bolt 12 with 6 each in the other 4 I’ve got available so far: masonry, fusion, traps and poison.

As to the talisman, I’ve bumped up any fragments that enhance my starting manna to the max and pretty much left the rest alone. Is that a good idea or are there other fragments that could use a boost at this stage? Contrariwise, should I leave future manna-bump fragments at base level at this point?

I’ve got 91 of the easier to grab achievements so far. What are some good ones to go after at this point? For instance, I got the 39 shadow cores a few levels back [thank you, Developer!] What are some others to shoot for in the earliest stages?

Oh, and would someone please explain the different advantages to black and white gems? I don’t have either one yet but I keep reading about how awesome they are and would like a brief explanation of how they work. If I understand correctly, white is better early on and black outstrips it later? What is it they do, exactly?

Thanks for any help and, if you’ve got any tips for earliest play that I’ve missed, please feel free to address them here.

Yes: http://steamcommunity.com/app/296490/discussions/0/490125103628865011/ read it and follow the links
Yes, it stacks, as you can easily verify by lining some traps.
No, enhancement do not stack, they just replenish.
You must be able to start with a g4 (and a tower). Later, a g5.
XP +x% is pretty good, too, but mana is the best.
Don’t bother too much, it’ll be easier to do them at higher level.
They multiply the other stats on a gem. For now white >> black, the crossover point is around g30-g40.

One more quick question:
I just took a look at some easy-seeming achievements. I built 5 traps. OK – no prob.

But I’ve run through twice attempting the “kill every monster with gems in traps.” I succeeded – I know I did. But the achievement was not awarded and, when I look at the achievement list, it’s still padlocked.

What am I doing wrong, please? It doesn’t say it has to be in a specific field so I did it in F – 1, of course. So what’s the problem?

Thanks.

Never mind! I answered my own question. Harking back to GC:L – I went back and tried it again without using green and got the achievement! Now, it doesn’t SAY green is not allowed – and people who haven’t played GC:L can’t be expected to figure it out on their own, I would guess. So that was a pretty glaring oversight, it seems.

Still – question answered.

It does not say green is not allowed because green IS in fact allowed. What you’re not allowed to do is killing by poison, which you probably end up doing if you use the green gems.

Thank you soOmeone! I needed that!
Yes, I’ve finished GC:L a few times and fought the Shadow more times than I can count [and lost to it a number of those times.] Yeah, I’d read that, in GC:CS it keeps going even when paused. And yes, that’s good to know in advance. Not that I’m anywhere near ready to engage it yet.

Have now reached level 81 and another question has surfaced. Where the heck is the Beam Tome, please? I’ve searched and searched in the hextiles available to me [F, E and I completed – – A, B, H and M not yet completed.] Shouldn’t I be coming up on it soon? It would certainly help if I could unlock it.

Also, where might I find the black and white gems? having played a few fields where they were unlocked, I’ve certainly discovered what a great advantage they are and am itching to be able to use them regularly. So far, only green and orange are unlocked.

Oh, and orblets?
I had played for a bit several months ago but real life intervened and I restarted because I could now get it on Steam. Last time, I’m pretty sure, I had acquired orblets by this point. Maybe I was playing through the map more quickly back then? I guess so because I haven’t found that tome yet and I’m further along WL-wise this time. Still, where are they again?

Thanks for any help.

Topic: GemCraft - Chasing Shadows / Need help - mana farm or other leveling ideas

I don’t have an exact threshold, I recall getting to WL ~500 with white/red levels and at that point I did a late hextile level with high traits and white/black/red which brought me to over 1k.

From there on, whatever gem was fine, at 3k+ I could even kill levels without red (with any *bound gem).

Topic: GemCraft - Chasing Shadows / Most achievements possible without pouch

I could be wrong (it’s been a while since I played without pouch), but didn’t talisman skill levels count towards the “all skills to 5+” achievement?

EDIT: I was also able to obtain the T5 achievement without problems
