Topic: Serious Discussion / Transhumanism and Consent

I was recently reading up about transhumanism, and a thought occurred to me. If the line between human and machine is blurred, the line between a sex toy and a person will be as well.

When does a robot become a consenting adult? Can a person who is mostly machine give consent, regardless of what their implants may be doing to their brain chemistry? What if their implants are designed to flood their brain with dopamine at certain triggers? Is that an unethical thing to design? to implant? To sell?

I’m not quite sure what I think about most of this, but I’m very sure that there is a difference between consent from someone who is sober, and consent from someone who is effectively drugged 24/7.

(You guys must have theories by now. I really want to know how predictable I am.)

“I don’t expect you to, being unbranded and the son of a shepherd. Alright. We’ll talk again. Get back to your village.”

He waves you away and speaks into his desk again. You walk out of the room, and two guards escort you back to the ramp. You run home.

Villagers aren’t allowed within 50 meters of the ship, but you’ve been inside it. You talked to the captain! No villager has ever even seen the captain.

But he knew so much about your parents…

What are you going to do?

>Ask the shaman for advice.

>Ask your father for advice.

>Just act like nothing happened.

(I’m sorry it wasn’t written very clearly earlier; he means “Do you like it in the village?”.)

“Alright, that all checks out. I just need to talk to someone very quickly.”

He presses a button on his desk, and speaks into it.

“Robban, can you please ask the shaman about any pressing matters.”

The captain waits for a moment. The desk replies.

“He claims that there have been no incidents.”

The captain becomes quite angry.

“Tell him that you know and if he doesn’t admit what happened, there are going to be consequences.”

“Sir, I don’t think he knows what ‘consequences’ means.”

“That will only make the message more frightening.”

The captain looks smug, and sits there for a minute. Finally, there is news.

“He says there’s a shepherd whose kid doesn’t look like him and doesn’t get burned by obsidian.”

The captain is stunned.

“Alright, kid. It’s finally clear. I just have one more question, then you can go. Do you like it here? In the village, I mean.”

>"Yes"

>"No"

>"I don’t want to answer this question."

“Well. I’d say that you’re probably around 20 years old. Where we come from, that’s barely more than a child’s age. We live longer. How old would you say I look? 30? I’m probably older than your parents. Also, that’s just what we call kids whose names we don’t know. What is your name?”

>"It’s (Insert Name Here)"

>"That’s none of your business."

>"That’s all."

(I don’t understand your OOC request.)

“Who am I? My name is Karl Fromberg, and I am the captain of this ship. I’m also probably a relative of yours. Although perhaps the question was meant to be more general. We, the people you call Others or Flyers, are men from the relatively nearby city of New Oslo. We fly over and offer your people medicine and other services in return for raw materials.”

“Any more questions?”

>"That’s all."

>"Why do you keep calling me ‘kid’?."

>"Why were you so angry earlier?"

You stand defiantly. The wild man walks right up to you, but deflates when he makes eye contact with you. He sits in his chair and starts giving orders.

“Kid, sit down. Surveyor Bruun, get back to the surface. I’ll have a talk with you later.”

The Flier who brought you here leaves.

“Alright, kid, I guess you have questions. You deserve better answers than I can give, but I’ll have to do.”

>"Why do you keep calling me ‘kid’?"

>"Why did you lose your mind when you saw me?"

>"Who are you?"

You walk with him to the ship. He leads you to the opening, and you see what the Fliers call “the hangar”. Large metal beasts come and go on wheels like carts. They roll up and down a ramp into a room larger than your entire house. They seem to be in the process of filling the hangar with metal from the factory.

The Flier leads you through the hangar, into a long hallway. The inside of this “ship” looks very similar to the inside of the Factory. Electric candles burn in the ceiling. The two of you walk for a while, then enter a small room. The Flier tells you to relax. The door closes, and you both stand in this closet. He presses a button, and the room moves.

You know about elevators, from the factory. You’ve never had to use one, but you’ve heard stories. Soon, the door opens again. You’re lead down another hallway. This floor feels like wool, and the walls look like wood. The Flier swipes a card and a door opens. You enter a room with two chairs and a desk. A woman sits behind it.

These people make you uneasy, but you’ve finally figured out why. No Brands. Their skin is perfectly smooth. Also, they wear a lot of clothing, in dark colors.

The Flier speaks a few words to the woman and she stares at you for a few seconds. Then, she lets you two through the door to her left. You enter another room with two chairs and a desk. This time, a very serious looking man sits behind it. He looks at the Flier questioningly, until he notices you. His face falls.

“No. Why? Why would you…? No. This is wrong. Get him out! OUT!”

He loses his mind and starts screaming. He stands, and the Flier who brought you here puts his arm between the captain and yourself. He tries to push you toward the door, but the serious man moves quickly. He is suddenly in front of the desk and pushes the other man aside. He looks furious.

They stop arguing and decide that one of them is going to take you back to “the ship”. The one who spotted you grabs you by the shoulder and tells you to walk.

What do you do?

>Go with him

>Stab him with the black-glass dagger

>Run away

(Any theories about the relation between the Brands, the fliers and the villagers?)

You ask why they’re whispering. They argue amongst each other, completely ignoring you. The nearby shepherds look confused and concerned.

“You don’t want to make the captain angry!”
“We can’t just leave the kid!”
“We need to atleast tell the captain!”

Their argument confuses you. You guess the fliers have a ship-like hierarchy inside their metal bird. Little is known about the fliers, and even less is told to you. They only come by every 20 years or so to pick up metal, food and wool.

They call you “kid” confusingly. Their lack of beards makes them seem quite young, to you. Also, they’ve talked about taking you inside the bird. This is quite frightening.

>Join the argument

>Listen quietly

>Run!

(I’ll go with the first vote.)

You turn to go home. You stroll down the hill, but stop halfway. You hear an odd noise. You turn and walk back to the crest of the hill.

A huge steel bird descends out of the clouds. It spins and sets down in the pasture. The Fliers! For the first time in your life, you see the fliers. The huge ship opens up and releases groups of men.

You race off to meet the group talking to shepherds. They wear strange clothing, and speak with an odd accent. One sees you and his relaxed disposition changes. He points at you and whispers to his companions.

How do you respond?

>Angrily

>Calmly

You hide the books and go out for a walk.

You walk up the hill and look out over the town. You see the mill, spinning in the breeze. You see the Factory, pumping smoke into the sky. Most villagers work in the Factory. They mine and refine ores. You were saved from that by being the only child of a shepherd.

The other direction, you see the valley. The valley is green and spotted with herds. On one end is the swimming hole.

You look at the houses and the herds, and smile. This is a good home.

Where are you off to now?

>Home

>The swimming hole

>The pasture

You go back to your room and light a candle. You pull up a floorboard and look into the gap. You see Moby Dick, The Greek Philosophers, and The Holy Bible. They’re dusty old copies, beat to pieces but still legible.

Books are illegal for the villagers. Your father can’t read, but he convinced the shaman to teach you. You have no idea where he got them, but he made you hide them.

You read a bit of The New Testament. You like the idea of Jesus dying for your salvation, but you doubt the factual accuracy of the book. After a few minutes of reading you feel restless.

You lie down and sleep for the night. In the morning, your father is gone. You walk outside and milk the sheep. You take the buckets of milk inside and move some hides. At noon your father comes home with a small bag of flour. He tells you to go relax.

You thank him for the knife and find a pocket to stow it away in.

“Now, I only want you to use it as a last resort. I see you want to go get the flour. Don’t worry about it. The sun is setting.”

You sit with your parents and eat a stew without bread. Back in your room, you take stock of your possessions before you go to sleep.

Inventory:
Black-Glass Dagger
Wool shirt
Pair of wool trousers
Bag of coin(12 copper pieces)

You have a difficult time getting to sleep. What are you going to do?

>Take a walk

You throw the bag and charge through the thugs. You sprint home, easily outrunning your attackers.

You arrive at the cabin and look for your father. You find him with his herd. He is a kind old man with a small star Branded on his forehead. He asks you about the flour, and frowns when you explain. He puts the herd back in the pen and takes you inside.

You pass your mother in the large main room of your home. She’s quite a bit younger than your father, and has a tiny “c” for a Brand. Your father takes you to the back room. He searches for an object among the hides and hanging meat. He finds a small bundle, and puts it in your hand.

“I hoped I’d never have to give you this. Your twentieth winter is coming up soon. The Fliers are coming, but you need to defend yourself until then.”

You unwrap the object. An black-glass blade.
The villagers can’t touch black-glass. Their skin burns at its touch. A black-glass blade is what the shamans use to make the Brands.
You turn the sliver of black-glass over in your hands. It feels almost cold. You can’t accept this! Black-glass is illegal!

>Accept the knife

>Refuse the knife

You drop the pail and grab the bag. The thugs dash toward you. You manage to get 30 meters down the path before they catch up. You can usually run much faster than the villagers, but the bag slows you down.

They surround you, and their apparent leader steps forward. This guy looks rough. His shirt is absent, revealing at least nine large scars. Some look like cuts, some bites and some stab-wounds. His Brand covers his whole head, ridding him of ears, hair and nose.

“Come on, Unburned. Let’s see how special you are.”

You carry the bag back through the village. The sun beats down, and you stop at the well for a drink. As you drink from the pail, a few rough looking characters appear. Their Brands are elaborate and grotesque. They all look pretty big, too.
You are a good bit taller than average height, and you know how to box. Even so, you doubt you could take them.

You take a right turn and follow the path all the way. You arrive at the mill and look for someone selling ‘meal. You find a man who goes by the name Old Jagur. He’s a leathery old man with fewer fingers than most. His Brand is a long straight scar on his cheek. That style is usually referred to as a “proving mark”. Its a relic from back when Branding was strictly utilitarian. No one ever tells you what it proves.

You give him your father’s coins for a large bag of weet-flour. You begin your trek back to the house.

Well, that was easy. Now to get home.

How will you get home?

>Use the main road

>Take a shortcut

(Boom. Back with quality writing and timely updates.)
(I hate the name. I’ll work on it, though.)

It’s just a trip to get some ‘meal. Don’t panic.

You try to calm yourself down. The villagers gaze at you as you pass. You see several expressions. Some look at you with some kind of religious reverence. Some stare at you like a 2-headed lamb. Some even look angry.

Their Brands are off-putting, although your parents have them too. Some villagers lack ears, noses or hair. Thankfully, your parents’ burns aren’t so severe. You see some villagers, now, with truly horrific scars.

It’s right there. Just keep calm.

The windmill spins above you. Oh, shit. A fork in the road. Which way leads up to the mill?

>Left

>Right

You approach one the people wearing the blankets. They probably saw the worst of it. This one is wearing a suit and glasses. You imagine he might be a banker, but that seems a bit too obvious. You ask him what was outside.

“Bats! Big red bats! They came from the West, from the magic district! The wizards! They let them out!”

Well, he can’t know that for sure. That is the theory of a mad-man. Although, he did say a few things that were useful: Big red bats, coming from the west. That might seem insane, but so is this whole situation.

Where are you headed to now?

>Talk to the police

>Approach the builder

>Get a meal
