Topic: Kongregate / (Unofficial) Kongregator of the year 2010

Thought I’d just interject again before leaving Kongregate once more.

First off, moderating is a volunteer service for Kongregate. No, I have not been a moderator for Kongregate and never will be, but I’ve been moderators for Facebook applications/games such as Kingdoms of Camelot and a select few Playfish games. I would say that everyone in here would agree that the idea of having a form of authority/power and using that responsibility to regulate chat is fun at first. However, moderators, regardless of which games they moderate, will soon learn that moderating is actually quite a chore. For some friends of mine, they find that the constant volunteering “sucks” the fun out of the games they moderate as they feel an obligation and a responsibility to regulate the chat. For me, personally, Whether or not this applies to Kongregate, let it be known that the responsibility of a moderator is quite a heavy burden, as you have to deal with all kinds of different people from the minute you log in to the second you log out.

By selecting a “Moderator of the Year”, it is like what ConfuzzledManiac said. You’re under-appreciating the efforts of the hundreds (?) of other moderators on Kongregate who invest time into making sure Kongregate is a safe environment for all to have fun with. Yes, some moderators may be more harsh than others, and some moderators may be more blunt than others, but most moderators in Kongregate do care about the community and do invest a significant amount of time in upholding the values of Kongregate. It’s something a bit difficult to explain in words, but I’m sure those who are moderators at Kongregate can regulate how sometimes moderating turns into a bit of a chore/burden.

Not to mention, moderators have to deal with a lot of shit and the shit comes in all kinds. You’ve got people who are purposely getting you aggravated, people who try to talk for you, people who start going insane, alternative accounts, etc.

In the end, these do nothing but promote elitism + strokes one’s ego.

You’ve had to have known there were going to be games you didn’t like, it happens everytime.

I was well aware that there always is a bad selection in a competition, and I do understand that those in charge are attempting to go beyond the already chosen games for previous contests, but the qualifier wasn’t even a qualifier, as 1000 was an incredibly easy score. As for the second game…for Round 1, taking a game that doesn’t even require skill at all, is pathetic. Yes, regarding the previous statement, time on Kongregate is a waste of time, but I do think that if you want a competition, at least make it so it’s not incredibly monotonous and just “remember the list and do as quick as possible.”

Achievement Unlocked is an overrated game, as with all of his games, but at the same time, there is absolutely no skill involved in this game. It’s just memorizing the list of achievements, and then going as quick as possible. It’s not the fact that I dont’ like the game, it’s just choosing this for a competition is just almost laughable.

This is the game? Really? I hated this game, got extremely lucky with a ton of lag, making it easier for the badges, yet I don’t feel that I want to go through it again. I’ll probably put in a score later, but rest assured, it will be well over 300 seconds.

So thats why you got 2 seconds, ok then

Read the rules. You ought to be disqualified, of all people.

For saying it’s story is it’s biggest selling point it was really poorly paced, and really could have done with some padding.

“Padding” is a terrible thing to add to a story. Pointless fluff is only useful for fulfilling minimum page requirements in high school; after that, the less text you have to use to get your point across, the better.

It’s rumored that Hemingway considered his six-word short story to be his greatest work: “For sale: baby shoes, never used.”

I resign from the competition. The fact that you chose two pretty bad games, one for the qualifier and one as an actual beat the time score is just ridiculous. I have not seen a competition that has this bad of a start of pickign games. Okay, Death Dice Overdoes was terrible as a qualifier, as there was no challenge and not even a qualifier at all. Now, with Achievement Unlocked, this game just sucks. Its not that I’m not good, but this doesn’t show skill at all. Its just nothing but memorizing the list. It’s the same thing as using “There is only One Level.”

Two very, very, very poor choices for games and a competition with this bad of a start is just ridiculous. The fact that you even increased the competition count from 100 to 120…can’t you guys have a final decision and leave it at that? Competition is about games with skills and a little bit of luck not about memorizing lists of achievements and just going as fast as possible. There is NO skill involved in both the qualifier and the game.

EDIT: I’d rather play games in a competition that actually challenge me to do better and require more skills. It’s also not the fact that I can’t beat the game or I’m not capable, this is just a waste of time.

DQ’s will now be issued on sight if someone accuses another in the thread.

LOL I suggested this on the first day when the first argument broke out into a full flame war, and then Cheeze pretty much disagreed. Pretty amusing at the fact that the people in charge of the contest don’t listen to suggestions, yet take them when they realize that it finally is a problem.

The music was excellent. It was probably the best music loop, and it fit the theme so well, and I never got tired. I even got up to stop my iPod speakers to just listen tot he music.

No badges please. That’s just going to ruin the point/theme/message that the game is going to convey. But no doubt, it’s probably going to be, since a badge will be a drastic increase in ad revenue, and I’m pondering whether or not the developer wants the game’s importance to either convey a message or to get more money.

What a coincidence. My little white Macbook does wonders for me, and has been faithful for the last three years to me. :) Been saving up for a new Macbook Pro in hopefully two years, hope I can last until then.

It’s a much better version of Chronotron, technically speaking. It’s not as frustrating because the clones that you make don’t disappear according to when you disappear, but all stand at their appropriate spots until the current character you control disappear. Also, I spammed clones without much lag until the 20+ clone, while in Chronotron, everything is a mess and 10+ = insane lag.

It’s easy to understand why people don’t like the game. Some people expect a platformer to have more puzzles, or more challenging segments, but I do think the main focus on “Company of Myself” wasn’t to put the player through challenging puzzles. I mean look at Chronotron and a few times at Use Boxmen, where the charm and theme and fun in playing the game results in frustration due to the game absolutely forcing you to time your clones to however it wants to.

I think the focus is the story, no doubt, and really, I didn’t like the ending as much, and I really thought the story could have been exploited more, but my defense is that the game is impressive and concise. Okay, maybe some things don’t make much sense in reality, like pulling the lever and forcing Kathryn to “fall to her death”, but I don’t think there are better alternatives – although I’m sure many people can prove me wrong as I’m typing this right now without much creativity. The focus is the story itself, so I found each puzzle, even though they were incredibly simple or really easy, just time consuming, all had great lines to accompany it. Again, focus is story. 2DArray, in my opinion, wasn’t going for a platformer that tested your game, because at the end of the day, it’s evident that Company of Myself is a concise game that is all about telling its story and message and perspective versus testing your brain.

I do hope that there aren’t badges for this game or a sequel. Perhaps a completely new story and a new design would be absolutely acceptable, but I feel making a sequel to this game, whether or not it continues the story or same theme, would really take away the charm of the game. And putting badges on this game would absolutely ruin the meaning and message and theme as people will just make walkthroughs on how to beat levels and just ignore text.

Hey Wiggles, stop flaming people, especially by leaving a shout on their profile and flaming them in that shout. You’re being just as immature as he is. It’s not nessacary, and at most, all you’re going to do is piss off more people and get us into another flame war. Let the competition host deal with these problems and contact the users, not you.

We definitely need to enforce rules that if people start a flame war in the competition thread/accuse others without proper evidence or anything = disqualified. It’s getting really out of hand, and it’s almost pathetic that we have a flame war about this before the competition has started.
