Topic: Kongregate / Kongregate getting worse?

Few things I want to mention (even though I agree with topic).
The following arguments are invalid towards Kongregate becoming worse(even though they make it harder to love):

  • Flash games with premium content should not be made light off – those developers aren’t making a fortune and they provide you a way to spend your pass-time joyfully (hopefully, if its a decent/good game). Micro-payment plans are excellent for this and it puts a respecting relation between gamer and developer.
  • “Haters gonna hate” – if the game isn’t in your category, or it somehow doesn’t fit your preference – don’t comment that it sucks. Just don’t play it. That’s what categories, tags and ratings are for. Same goes to developers’ responsibility – don’t upload games that aren’t finished or are in testing phase (use beta or sod off).
  • “Flamers”, “noobs” and other “challenged” people – mute them if they bother you. This isn’t real life – not everyone has to be your friend. The internet is full of them, get used to it, Kongregate is no different (which is a shame).
The last point doesn’t mean the community is healthy – the validity of the argument resides in the system providing room for them to operate in all their harmful ways, not them being present as such.

Topic: Kongregate / Activity feeds for everyone

I’ve been part of Kongregate since 2007; I’ve helped providing suggestions (Kong+ among others).
However, along the years I felt the community was descending into a troll-fest, with many of the site features not addressing my interests.
Including but not limited to: Kong+ features, community, activity feeds, homepage linkage.
“Recently played games’’ and "Hot new games’’ should have priority. A "black/dark theme’’ should be made available and Kong+ should have more advanced features.
(Kong+’s "ad-free gaming’’ is complete bogus – you still get ads!, beta access is a joke – there aren’t that many beta games and they aren’t worth it, same with private chat – doesn’t work well in a troll community).
It’s not worth logging in at all recently, except to make posts about what needs to be done.
Just make regulars (or only Kong+ users) be able to have a start-page (black or white theme) with customizable sections.

Mind you, I’m not trying to troll the developers here; this is not an issue I’ve seen that only affects the gamers but also the developers. More and more I see games going first to Armorgames and not to Kongregate. They have dedicated save-file space too. Take a hint?

Apparently ASAP means ‘next century’? People like ‘kaix11’ and ‘lolololol’ are still spamming the chat with rubbish dot floods.

Attacks from one of my Alliance(carnifex mortifer) member(orangutang) towards other players didn’t get registered in Alliance Log at all, which they should.
They have been recent, while member was in alliance, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t be listed?
Is there a glitch in which you can avoid pvp attacks to be not listed in Alliance Log? Both incoming and outgoing?

You make it sound like it is bad how this game has limited protection for PVP. Sure, it isn’t the most advanced and you’ll have some complaints now and then. But those that complain usually never applied any of the protective mechanisms or didn’t assess their ‘friends’ as much as they should.

I do also play these games for research, how they deal with affected aspects. But what you’re trying to push on this game (limiting the attacks on ‘weaker’ players) is not that feasible a mechanic here, mostly also because it wouldn’t fit the ‘genre’. This is a gory & messy, multiplayer, free-world conceptual, game.

As in most social competitive games, strength and diplomacy are of course viable defensive mechanisms. It sounds then like there’s basically no in-game protection for weaklings who are too lazy / incompetent to get strong or build alliances (ie me).

That’s not the angle at which you should view the mechanisms.

If you want to stay weak, but still want protection: join an alliance, don’t have to build one.
Following other inquisitors will enable you to ask reinforcements when you’re online during an attack; following inquisitors also have the opportunity to counter-attack your attacker faster if they haven’t lifted the Expose yet (which decreases distance and cost of attack sharply).

This is more like how Eve Online takes on PVP (not exactly, but close enough).

Does anything stop very strong players like X4MHD from attacking weak players like me? Other games frequently have some mechanism to prevent attacking players that are much weaker. Does this game have anything other than the time-limited newbie protection?

There are several mechanisms in place:

  1. Being in an alliance; All alliance members are notified if any of their members are attacked
(notification is visible on the alliance page). Your alliance members are also unable to attack you.
  2. Being in a following relation; People, you’re following or being followed by, can’t attack you.

Some Inquisitors are known to help with counter-attacking, seek them out and follow them if you wish to have a higher chance of surviving.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Dungeon Inquisitor] SUGGESTIONS

(continuation from previous post as it was full…)

  • Small Mentoring reward
Every newplayer (player in beginner protection) that becomes a follower to another player, to give bonus soul per hour to the other player at the rate of newplayerlevel per hour (+1~7 ph). This should give another small incentive to tutor newplayers to beneficial game levels, having them communicate with higher level players, and getting them introduced to midlevel to highlevel gameplay faster. The bonus would stop once they leave beginner protection.
  • Detailed Battle Reports in Flash
What I mean by this is to make the detailed battle report (requires a bird woman or contest match) in Flash. I think it would make a welcome addition to gameplay and also makes it easier for people to see what is going on in the battle.
I know this sounds like a lot of work, but it could be pulled off with just a sprite-chessboard-layout (like in batheo) and have the armies meet eachother in turns, like the current report says. And on hover-over-unit you could see targeting lines between the units with numbers over the heads for heals/damages.
  • Filter options
Filter options for Public Auction ‘ALL’-column (ie: specific amount of certain stat, example: 30+ magic). And filter options for ‘Storage’ and ‘Creatures’ tabs on right panel. For Storage: categorizing by Type would be helpful, by Alphabet and by Date(of acquirement, which should not carry-over between players). For Creatures: categorizing by Type is already default, though it is not Alphabetical, or by Experience/Level, but per Date(of summon).

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Dungeon Inquisitor] SUGGESTIONS

Though I’m well aware that developers may fight against suggestions from players and may even screen suggestions as critique of the game: this topic (and the posts) is not at all intended as critique, but merely as a means to increase playability of a game thereby increasing the fun overall for players.

  • Human King raid event
Every certain amount of lords imprisoned can trigger a King assault (raid Boss), which needs to be defeated by a number of Inquisitor teams. The King can drop a range of Items upon defeat.
  • Chat character identifier
The chat is very small and double lines of text are extremely annoying, especially when you’re trying to make it a single sentence on one line -not two. The identifier is a number at the right side of the chat that signals how many characters you have left before hitting the next line.
  • Back buttons
On several in-game pages you can’t go back to the page you were viewing previously. Viewing another player’s profile, clicking any battle report and going back is impossible through normal game means and one has to use the right-mouse button to manually go back. This also induces the ‘fullscreen’-bug of the right panel (seeing only the creature list and all the options are gone), which can’t be undone with the right-mouse ‘Back’.
  • Public auction rating
To be able to rate public auctions’ quality. Maybe with Dungeon Heart level and/or Prestige as rate-strength. This should encourage better prices.
  • Public auction identifiers
Columns (or popups) that give a check on whether: a human has items, is tamed; an item has a lure.
  • Storage/Creatures scroll-bar
The list is longer than can fit on the game window and the only way to scroll down the list is manually text-pulling towards the bottom. Combined with the fact that with every interaction on the right panel it generates an automatic refresh of that frame – you need to manual text-pull that list every single time if you have more than one thing that needs done. A scroll-bar would be the most minimal functionality one should place to combat this inefficiency.
  • Imp upgrading
The idea is to make the imp upgradeable, with the bonus that at level 2 it can actually use its wings so that they allow the imp a 50% (example percentage) evasion from any remotes(archers etc).
  • Creature pets
An idea to incorporate a variety of small animals into the game that slightly affect the creature they’re coupled with. For example, a spider matriarch escorting a dark priest could heal 1% of total health of 100% (exampled percentages depending on pet quality) of current creatures every turn while the dark priest heals the full amount to 1 creature per turn. Other pets could be: hell-hound, gargoyle, bat, specter/wraith, acolyte, ghoul, bone-dragon (all with their own distinctive bonuses).
  • Daemon Factions and Altar room
An altar room where one can pay tribute (once per day) to the faction lord (not alliance lord), whom in turn gives a reward back for your services in the human realm, in the form of Gold/Soul/Pets or Items (every faction lord with their own reward preference).
As explanation: daemon lore describes there are several faction lords that each sit in their respective daemon-realms, with large groups of daemonic dwellers struggling to become the next lord. Although the daemon-realm is chaotic and strive to become the strongest is extreme, there is a military sense of order and faction lords will merit, those with military excellence, if one decides to enlist.
  • Chat tabs
General chat, (Faction chat,) Trade chat, Alliance chat tabs. Faction chat could be useful for faction events such as Human King Raid. Alliance chat could be used for reinforce requests or alliance auctions. Trade chat for price-negotiating purposes between parties. This to keep General chat for newbies (whom ask many questions), and regular conversations.
  • Alliance NAP setting
The biggest alliances are in a officious NAP already, and many honor this deal, but not everyone. Helping the NAP its efficiency with an actual setting would improve alliance relations and would also put more meaning into the use of alliances altogether.
  • Letter of Marque
To negate some of the alliance effects, it is suggested game-mechanism increases loot and prestige gain percentages when a player without alliance attacks and wins from a player with alliance.
  • Levy All button
To increase efficiency of player-server interaction, one could place a button that once pressed will levy all your explored areas (that have available levy).
  • Drain Prisoner option
To increase efficiency of player-server interaction, one could place an option in interrogation that drains all of prisoner’s energy, so the inquisitor doesn’t have to ask the prisoner the same question 200 times just to cut interrogation costs.
  • Private Area
Every player that becomes level10 to acquire a private hunting ground, which you can levy from, can’t sell lures from, doesn’t allow other players to enter, and which you will keep even if you’re defeated in a pvp attack (not contest). A separate luring button would have to be placed to keep the non sell area separated from the sell areas. This to combat human lure fatigue effects every high level player is dealing with, because areas are overfarmed.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Dungeon Inquisitor] How to Tame a Tought Prisoner

Asking the prisoner questions until Energy is 0 will help in lowering the cost of Souls needed when re-interrogating.

The soul cost for interrogation is calculated as: 0.5 x prisoner’s Energy (rounded down).
Prisoner’s Energy will regenerate the same amount as Blood does.

(Action) (Leader) (Team-Size) (Arrival-Time) (Report-ID) (Report-Arrival-Time)
Attack Oseye, 2, 23:38:55, 674870, 23:43:18
Attack Cherlyn, 3, 23:40:46, 674872, 23:43:18
Attack Bernhard, 4, 23:42:05, 674873, 23:43:18

I’ve waited the full time to get these arrivals to become prisoner, but upon arrival the time became 00:00:00 and no prisoners are found.
The lure I set to trap another also became 00:00:00 and stayed that way until it just vanished.
I already deleted the lures for those 3 arriving…so am I going to lose these to-be prisoners to the void?
(I already tried reloading page and Kaiser said he has same problem)
EDIT
It could be lag, as it is now fixed, prisoners have arrived. However, this could be a troublesome problem when you have several of incoming party that barely fit your prison. We space the arrivals out so we can ransom prisoners meanwhile. If the groups come all at once you lose out on what could have been on those humans that don’t fit your prison.
EDIT 2
GameMaster came online to say server was restarting to fix the problem, so this post may very well just be part of game history. ^^
EDIT 3
As of 27/02/2012 02:35 server time, 00:00:00 trap bug encountered again by several players (including myself). Although for me, after having waited a few minutes and refreshing, the human party eventually entered the Intruders list (thus I have not wasted souls by using trap item).
EDIT 4
13/03/2012 15:36 server time, another occurrence of the bug encountered.
EDIT 5
12/04/2012 08:45 server time, another occurrence of the bug encountered.

Its also a fine make-shift alternate for people who enjoy using spoilers: SPOILER.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Redshift] Official: Feature Requests and Suggestions

Originally posted by synapticon:

We’ve done a lot of playtesting and fuel has not really been a major issue for us. What causes fuel to be the bottleneck?
a) Jumping between systems
b) Long battles with a few enemies
c) Short battles with a lot of enemies
d) Scanning/activating various mobs

  1. Mostly b) and its hard finding enemies, even harder to find enemies that are worth eliminating.
What it comes down to is that fuel is used inefficiently, similar to an American muscle car’s use of fuel (no offense).
  2. Star Tokens have a horrible rate. A Lv.15 ship hull for 300 Tokens is roughly the equivalent of 45 USD. Not to mention that changes to in-game items are made without player’s knowledge any time the developer sees fit (stat, quality & token/credit changes).
Shop sells more Token items than it does Credit items, where Token items are excessively superior to the Credit items.
The shop also removes purchase from store and adds new purchase every time a player ranks up, sometimes removing important items you would still buy at your level.
  3. An incapacitated ship hull roughly quadruples the cost of repair for your ship, which you can only really make back by doing more quests, because gears are not worth selling and enemies give near to none credits. Since there are only a limited number of quests, it is advised not to become incapacitated as this will hurt your capacity to buy new gear from shop immensely.

Suggestions:
- Cut back on that fuel inefficiency in battles.
- Galaxy Map to have a more accurate threat-level meter per system so you can track down npc enemies faster, instead of having to visit every system for a few enemies that generate maybe 100 exp total when you need 3000 to level up.
- Apply a more reasonable Star Token ratio and broadcast item changes on forum in advance.
- Give quest items more use by making them upgradeable or of excellent quality.
- Shop needs to retain more usable items for sale.
- Need to be able to exchange fuel for Credits or Tokens, as both are too limited in availability.

What I found when trying to log-in: (solved)

nginx error! DETAILS

Also, my post in the other (old) topic has been edited to include more points of interest.

EDIT (Jan 15 2012)

  • I believe the ship cargo capacity has been removed, this is good. But I kinda do like to see a Factory Component Inventory and a Mission Component Inventory. Or remove the Mission Components after the mission is completed, because I have no clue if I should be selling them for 0 or keep them for fun.
  • Sometimes when I destroy an enemy, it drops a green titled item: Bismuth or Zirconium , which I thought was a high-grade Factory Component, but I can’t locate it in my Armory Sell inventory or anywhere else. (solved)
  • Sometimes after finishing mining an Asteroid, it targets the next Asteroid and starts mining even if it is on the other side of the map.
  • Ship drops usually don’t disappear at once when clicked, they dance around your ship for minutes.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Redshift] Bugs and glitches (old)

  1. I get alot of ‘’Timeout loading getNotifications. Please reload the page.’’-messages, sometimes coupled with other timeout message(s).
If this game is graphically¹ and/or memory¹ intensive (¹ -ware wise), it should be advised in game description (esp. since there are no in-game quality settings). Additional frustration: half the game I played is with a time-out notification in the middle of the screen. Sidenote: this is the only flash game that makes my Firefox have half a million pagefaults in under 60 mins.
  2. Tutorial tips that cling to your screen until you get a new notification. Although good for new players, it clogs up the already small tilted window. Perhaps add a last-10 notification Log that players can access?
Sidenote: some of the tutorial texts block your cursor freedom leading to sometimes impossible tasks.
  3. The ship you fly tends to circle its way to waypoints and only very rarely that it actually stops there. This makes targeting moving ships extremely hard. Also because ships continue to move out of your game screen, target sensors are vague, difficult ‘hit-box’ and game screen moves with you. Sidenote: when an enemy target is selected, clicking your repair bot will automatically re-engage your target. And if your target can only be scanned, then the repair bot won’t work at all on you.
  4. When a ship blows up, some type of ‘Shielding Module’ appears. What is this? If they’re cubits or equipment drops and they need to be picked up, do let us know in tutorial, this is too vague.
  5. Quite a few skills in Skill Training appear the same. It would make more sense to generalize some of them under a single banner in that it becomes easier to view and level.
  6. What does my relation with any of the factions do for me?
Does it affect me at all or is it just a progress meter?
  7. What is the difference between the several ship classes? To me it seems random how ship 1 is a frigate and ship 2 is a ship destroyer. You could provide additional ship details that will support ship class designation (ex: hull type, speed, agility. strengths & weaknesses).
  8. Fuel keeps changing in my disfavor. And is it Shield or Armor?
  9. Players keep challenging me to a duel, which is rather annoying when busy with a mission.
  10. I can’t help but think about Battlestar Galactica Online when playing this.
  11. I don’t really mind point 10 as long as the previous 9 points are worked on or explained.

EDIT

synapticon: What is your machine setup X4MHD? Sounds like a handful of those issues are due to the game running very slowly.

Let’s just say that this is an old system and that it loaded all the flash websites and games in the past like a charm. Presently, flash developers seem to dig up new ways to have their flash use more memory, so older systems will have to be replaced by newer ones just to follow suit. Although progress does require sacrifice, for an environment where you’re targeting the largest crowd possible, this is a step back.

I used to play this (when it came out of beta), but somehow my java got corrupted and I’ve never been able to play any Java game after this. Also, I definitely prefer Unity3D over Java, since the first seems to be a much more stable handling environment than Java, for the user at least.

As for the game, the missions ramp up in difficulty quite fast so eventually it requires you to team up with other players as they’re near impossible to solo. Considering most gamers (when I played this) were German-speaking, I do hope some English-speaking players will come.

For instance: to attack Net Neptune pirate harbor, you need a dock in Keelung.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Naviage] How to attack ?

The step-by-step guide to attack a Pirate Harbor:
If you don’t have a fleet yet, create one first

  • confirm Dock near Pirate Harbor, confirm fleet in that dock (hover the port when in continent-view)
  • confirm Raid Permit (taskbar: Navigator: Items tab, otherwise check peerage-ranked Gift Bag)
  • confirm navigator(s) fleet doesn’t need Repair (dock: Ship Factory: Repairman)
  • confirm navigator(s) fleet is set Battle Ship (taskbar: Fleet: click your fleet)
  • confirm Fleet Establishment with non-Hold ships, confirm fleet Gold (same window as above)
  • confirm Sailors (port: Tavern: Tavern Owner)
  • in port, click Customs, Dock Purser, Attack
  • click nearest Pirate Harbor: Command, Select Dock, Select, select Upper/Middle/Lower

Some extra information:
- You can send more than one fleet to hit the same pirate harbor dock.
- Other players can join in too.
- Fleets will automatically return afterwards.
- A fleeing fleet will take longer to return to dock and loses a % of fleet gold.
- A destroyed fleet will lose fleet experience and all fleet gold, navigator ‘swims’ back to port.
