Glad to help. If any of my ideas work out, it’d be nice to get a credit somewhere, or a bit of that paid work you mentioned. I’ve been doing level-design, QA-testing, and art for a few other games that are still trudging through development, but I’ve time for a little more paid work.

Either way, I’d be quite interested in seeing the results. Let me know when I can give the game a go.

I will endevour to give you a mention.

Will let you know once I have made the game, or at least got it to a decent level and then if I need any work I will let you know.

I think I might leave 3D for a different game, don’t think a TD game is the best use of 3D.

Thanks everyone

Very different to what I was thinking. Here is my idea, let me know what you think.

- Imagine a cube, say for example 5 × 5 × 5
- There is a start and end point where creeps come from, as in most TD games
- The path they take is then no longer 2D, its a 3D path

[Edit]: Thinking about it, i’m not sure how feasiable that would be. Would make it very difficult to see the paths that the enemies are taking, and it could be impossible to see the inside towers when there are towers around then.

I am now thinking that possible I could just do a tower defense game, like Desktop TD, but with 3D models and the ability to rotate the camera.

Hrm… that is a possibility.

I have not worked with 3D in Flash yet, and know nothing about how it is done (although I have made a 3D game using Blender).

I will look into it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I won’t need an artist, I don’t like to blow my own trumpet but I am a more than competant artist, was going to be my original career before deciding I prefer IT and business.

Katana099, you’re idea sounds kinda similar to another TD, can’t remember the name, but you join up towers and basically ended up being the case that you just tried to make the longest chain possible with 1 turret at the end.

I am constantly re-working the engine trying to ensure that it is as fast and customisable as possible. Taking me a while to develop but the final tweaks to it will need to be made as I am making the TD game. I have a very basic TD set up at the moment but don’t want to make it too advanced in case I decide to take it in a completely unique direction.

Capucchi, I agree that all the best TD games are follow the same patern but have a unique characteristic. I may do the same, just have to think of what, which I am struggling with.

Topic: Collaborations / Need person w/ ideas

Hi all,

Just a quick intro, I am a final year University student who has been developing in Flash and AS3 for around a year now. I am also a pretty good artist, been using PS, Fireworks, Illustrator, Blender, etc. for many years now.

Anyway… I have recently developed a fully working Tower Defense engine, similar to that of Desktop Tower Defense or Bubble Tanks TD in the way that you define the path by placing the towers, towers can be upgraded, there are waves, etc.

I am stuck now as to what to do with it, I don’t want to just make another generic TD game. So basically I am looking for ideas for my game, a theme, USP (Unique selling point), or just something creative.

If you have any ideas, post them here. There is also the possibility that if I go forward with an idea that I can offer some paid work to aid in developing it (i.e. working out the finer details, designing the levels, testing, etc.)

Topic: Collaborations / (Artist/Programmer) Looking for work...

Hi there,

I’m a final year University student who has finally got some spare time on his hands.

Drawing and art have been my hobby now since school, and I am a competent C++ and Java programmer who started learning AS3 around 8 months ago now and I am fairly good.

I have a half-finished example of a game I can show to show my art and programming, my main downfall is the story line (I have no imagination).

If anyone needs me, drop me an e-mail at cl292@ex.ac.uk.

On a side note, I would expect any money made from making the game to be split fairly depending on contribution. If someone gives me an idea and expects me to do the art and programming, don’t expect much.

I know there is a lot of lag on it at the moment, I am currently just getting it working. Once it is done I can then work on modifying it to flow like a stream :D

View what is currently developed here:
http://megaswf.com/view/43553ce7725d890098e86d542f892af0.html

I am in need of an artist who can:
create the different backgrounds, 8 in total.
create the menus, preloader, etc.
create different dinosaurs that are able to be animated, around 16 different dinosaurs.
create a better looking interface for the game.

Also, if an artist wishes to use their own art style, I am more than happy with that.

I am able to do the animations although if an artist would be willing to do the animations I will be willing to give them a larger percentage distribution.

I am not looking for amazing art but at a higher standard than that of which is already in the game (which was created by me).

If an artist is interested we can discuss fee and … I am thinking in the range of a $30 flat fee upon completion and then 25 although it is up for debate.

If you are interested in getting some art work in to a game and you don’t mind working for free send me a whisper.

I have done quite a bit of art work for my game so far, but I can find you some stuff that needs doing and can put you in the credits.

Here is an example of my game http://megaswf.com/view/e9c861f4af4e1b00ec066014a39abc4b.html

However, there is a lot more art and coding done than you can see here but I am in the process or re-structuring my code and so not much is happening in the game at the moment.

Topic: Collaborations / Need Art for RTS

I am very interested in being an artist for you. It may take me a little over a year as I am quite slow at art but I have amazing results. An example of my art is this tank I have made, it has taken several months (I am on version 32 of it atm):

I saved it as .jpg to make the file smaller to put on the internet, if you are interested I will send you the .bmp version as a lot of the quality is lost in file compression.

Topic: Game Programming / Using an image/MC/whatever from library with AS 3.0 without setting a class.

If you need to access an object such as an MC, if you export to actionscript, you then just use… for example an MC exported with the name ‘MyMC’ is added by using…

var myMC = new MyMC();
addChild(myMC);

Is that what you mean?

You have to use other sources. Kongregate only allows flash games.

Topic: Game Programming / Complex Hit Test Problem

I have managed to solve the problem just by using an improved hitTest class. It does occasionally pass over very small parts without registering a hit, but it is acceptable.

Cheers for the advice though everyone.

Topic: Game Programming / Is your game copyright-protected when using Mochiads?

Once again… why not look on Mochiads to see what it says on their website?

Or… look up what ‘copyright-protected’ means. The creator of software, art, music, etc. holds the copyright to that creation. It doesn’t protect it really, if you create a game and someone steals it, in all fairness there isn’t much you can do.

Topic: Game Programming / Complex Hit Test Problem

Hey guys, I have a slight problem with my hitTest in my game.

It is a shooter, and on every frame tick, a bullet is moved based on it’s predefined speed, and it tests to see if it has hit anything.

The problem is, that say I have an MC 5 pixels wide, and the bullet travels at 10 pixels per tick, more than half the time, the bullet will pass through the object without it registering a hit.

Is there any solution to this rather than increasing frame rate and decreasing bullet speed (so it looks the same but the bullet is actually moving less distance per frame).

Topic: Game Programming / How do i .... spot the difference?

Ah yer, just saw on her profile she is a woman and 34, and so maybe there is more potential that the game will be made as age generally brings maturity, and it is normally the lack of maturity that stops games being made.

Topic: Game Programming / Annoying problem =(

Can you use else inside of an if statements brackets ( )?

I would have thought you meant ‘or’ which is ||

And if you want to order those variables, just put them in to Array and use the sortOn function.

Topic: Game Programming / How do i .... spot the difference?

Well he may have downloaded them legally, he may have downloaded the trials and then cracked them to make them illegal, or he may have bought them.

It doesn’t really make much difference whether his Adobe products are legal or not, he still has the software.

But I would guess from his writing that I will never see this game, will probably be abandoned after he finds out coding is involved.

Topic: Game Programming / [ALMOST SOLVED] Preloader Problems

That is how I originally had my preloader. However, I was told by… possibly jonathanasdf (if it was you then why haven’t you told this person? :P) that you can change the “Export to Frame 1” check box to “Export to Frame 2”. To do this go to File > Publish Settings > ‘Flash’ tab and then next to actionscript there is a button saying, ‘Settings’, click that and change export to frame 2 rather than frame 1.

Then what you need to is set everything (except your preloader MC’s) to export to frame 2, add a ‘stop()’ on the timeline in frame 1, and then once your preloader completes the loading, skip to frame 2.

This gets rid of the need of placing instances of all the MC’s on the timeline except for your preloader. So for your preloader, (in my case just a bar and text), place them on the stage, give them an instance name each and then manipulate them that way rather than addChild().
