Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Legacy of Heroes] Is PvP fun?

PvP is fun for heavy spenders who care about winning to the exclusion of actually playing. That being said, PvP is deeply flawed beyond power imbalances.

Even if we assume for the sake of argument that you run into somebody who has a roughly equal card collection and Skill Point expenditure total, you’re still going into every single PvP match virtually blind, with the exception of Rules of Engagement in EFL where you can count on certain cards not being allowed. Once you’ve brought your deck, that’s it. You have zero opportunity to change it in any way during the course of a match, and you have very little control over which cards are drawn/banished/depleted/recovered (there are some exceptions, but again, so much of it is just a crapshoot. Maybe you’ll lose all your mementos early, and maybe none of your offense-boosting events will deplete until the end, while you lose your recovery events immediately. Better luck next time.)

The amount of RNG in this game is staggering. I’d hesitate to declare a true “winner” (again, between two roughly evenly matched opponents) until I saw them play dozens of rounds against each other, unless one of them had a deck that literally had more retribution/recovery than the other person could ever soak, and the opponent had no access whatsoever to banish.

It seems to me like the wiser course, rather than make matches best-out-of-99, is to make the game more complicated, less dependent on RNG, and more significantly affected by player choices.

And that’s not even addressing the P2W problems.

Consider adding subtypes to more allies to make Up and At’Em a more attractive card.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Legacy of Heroes] Bug Reports - Official

Just played a Brawl (Three Harmonies.)

Played Shadowplay. Buff appeared in my window. Was not attacked next turn.

Played Helios: Genesis. Buff appeared in my window. Shadowplay buff did not dissipate visually (was not expected to dissipate, as the buff has no expiration.)

Was attacked by Three Harmonies with Close to the Chest (or whatever it is, Martial Attack, plays copy from depletion pile then banished.) First attack triggered Helios: Genesis and the damage was reflected before being applied to my deck. 24 damage. Second attack hit for 20 damage.

Shadowplay disappeared from my buff list, having utterly failed to function. Expected behavior was for both of those hits to be for 5 damage, and for Helios: Genesis not to trigger at all.

Just follow this simple rule: any time a card has anything to do with allies, or is an ally, it’s worth double-checking to make sure that it’s actually worth putting in your deck, as opposed to a different card that doesn’t involve allies in any way.

Otherwise, stack red, stack yellow, fuss with purple based on your badges, and do your best to not use green or white.

I apologize for being unclear. I meant one of the class’s procs, not their main badge’s proc, which, as you noted, does not exist during drafts. The error was mine.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Legacy of Heroes] Regarding WC mechanics imbalance

So, with Help From Above, Seen it All Before, 15 Minutes, Moxie’s Missiles, Cold Case, Soldier/Sidekick, BWRAO, Blast Radius etc. etc… can we finally maybe talk about why there aren’t more WC counter strategies in the game? Or are we still pretending that it’s okay?

I mean, I’ll admit that in Brawls it’s just flat-out hilarious. I just finished a crisis Dr. Tesseria where two guys rocking CC were practically fighting over which one of them was going to drop the ridiculous, 100+ nuke to end the brawl (the second guy probably could’ve gotten above 500 with a hooded, crit Moxie’s Missiles on 101 WC… on the third full turn of play, where a similarly buffed PM might not have cleared 250.) No worries abusing a computer with WC nuking. It doesn’t have feelings.

But it’s a problem elsewhere, and it’s only going to get worse. Post i8 its only real counter is going to be a Helios versus NW coinflip. I can’t believe I wasn’t skilled enough to have a NW in my hand when he played Helios! Or… I can’t believe I wasn’t skilled enough to play Helios when he didn’t have a NW in hand, because it’s the only counter to a nuke that lasts more than one turn!

Explain to me the risk of building up huge amounts of WC right now. Explain to me the opportunity cost. Given the list of cards I rattled off above, explain to me how it’s a rare or difficult thing to do.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Legacy of Heroes] So is PvP still...

There are certainly a few cards that seem unfair when you’re on the receiving end. I just hit a spot in the rankings where every player who’s not 50-100 levels below me (yay matchmaking system) is sporting an On The Bubble, which is just huge. When I get one, my PvP power will increase dramatically, and I’ll be far less butthurt about the card.

With PM and LDE, I sort of feel butthurt about them no matter what, just because they determine so many rounds so often. And hey, I’ve got tons of LDEs. I win rounds with them all the time. ALL the time. Still butthurt. It’s predictable, it’s not fun, and there’s very little I can do about it except play my own first.

I’m also not a huge fan of PM because I’m an Acolyte. I chose the class to play ally/recovery. Both of those strategies are basically losers in PvP, except for the few ally cards that are just too good to not include, like The Abyss or Billy Stopless or, soon, This-is-Sparta He-Man Helios. PM’s only downside? Your own ally cards work against you. Best way to mitigate PM? Banish your own depletion pile, which makes recovery an even weaker strategy than before.

Seriously, Acolytes are just tragic.

Most in-the-know players are recommending farming i2 Crisis, since it has the highest ratio of fights that might drop clippings to overall energy spent. Still, it’s a grind and an energy sink that’s truly horrific… and only gets worse than truly horrific if you have bad luck.

Grinding out a Helios (or heck, even two) is probably a better use of energy right now, just because it’s far less random, and it’s clearly meant to be a highly accessible answer to LDE and PM in PvP, and to high-powered single hits in PvE (which, surprise surprise, they’re moving away from in favor of blanking, more insane recovery/deck supplementing, and multi-card chains. Shocking.)

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Legacy of Heroes] General New Player Advice (all playing just for the badges, please read bolded sections before commenting or rating the game 1/5 just for having energy)

If you’re only level 40, I’d recommend it. It’s going to hurt a bit, and without spending LC you won’t ever be getting your Acolyte badge points back. Still, any points you’ve spent on Shared Skills aren’t lost, and the difference between FS and Acolyte at higher levels/decks is just… well, it’s pretty significant. You have to remember that you’re not just getting a better primary badge. You’re also getting much more useful secondary badges.

Granted, it won’t seem like a huge difference to you if you manage to get a few of the most ridiculous epic/legendary cards, but all of the double damage and crits really do add up, even if you don’t remember them because you’re still reminiscing about the 625 damage that one guy did with Painful Memories in that brawl that one time.

Drafts are really their own animal, and you’re correct that Acolytes do a bit better there. Deck sizes are low and cards are generally low-powered, which means that +1 damage and +1 recovery every single time you play an Acolyte card might actually mean something in the grand scheme. Likewise, 3 shields actually means something during a draft, as does having a card that does 4 damage with no extra bells and whistles.

As soon as powerful cards enter a draft, you can immediately see how being anything besides an Acolyte is the better choice. Even an FS proc on a 4/0 card can really bring the hammer down. The other primary badges provide superior bonuses, and the other supporting badges are still better than Acolyte’s. It’s better to have 1 Acolyte badge as another class to get all the Acolyte-specific special effects than it is to actually play an Acolyte.

The real problem, I suppose, is that Nonstop and Firesculptor’s primary badges, and arguably also a few of their secondary badges, have much better scaling as card power increases. Acolyte’s only really serious scaling is a higher chance to banish allies, which ostensibly also become more powerful. Their Firesculpting support badge can be somewhat powerful if you invest (too many) skill points in it, but it’s ridiculously situational; you need to focus your deck on allies (which is a bad choice in most cases, and too expensive) and then also find FS allies. The Nonstop badge is just a joke, and the Strongharm badge suffers the same problem of not scaling quickly enough as deck power increases. +1 shields at higher levels of play might as well not even exist, what with all the double damage, unstoppable damage, critical strikes, WC nuking, PM, LDE, and multiple-card-combos being flung around.

You know what class might actually be adversely affected by an opponent gaining a single bonus shield? Acolytes. It totally negates a chunk of their primary badge for a good long while.

Ultimately, the banish proc still only banishes one card, and that card isn’t a WC nuke, PM, or LDE. As deck sizes and power increase, that’s something that can be shrugged off both in PvE and PvP with barely a second thought. NW is much more powerful, because it has a high chance to cause the opponent to effectively lose his turn and have zero shields up.

It’s funny you should mention the unwritten rule that no badge currently affects non-badge cards, because that was essentially going to be my alternative suggestion: make Acolytes treat every card as having every badge baseline, and then give them, say, an extra 1 damage/1 recovery boost when playing an actual Acolyte card.

Once again, I’d argue that their three supporting badges might still be a little on the weak side (because allies in general are still problematic and +1 shields still doesn’t scale very well) but it would definitely open up a wider range of possibilities.

Suggestion #1: Gotta fix Acolytes. They’re a mess. I just recommended to new players to avoid the class entirely. There are a million things that could be done to make them both more powerful and much more interesting, while remaining within the spirit of the class. Our primary badge is boring, our Strong support badge is weak, and our Nonstop and FS badges are hilariously narrow in their focus – which is on allies, which is a hugely problematic portion of the game in both PvE and PvP (though for very different reasons in each.)

My favorite idea is to amp up Acolyte-only recovery (since every class has access to basically 95% or more of the recovery in the game right now, and often with options to use their own specialty’s cards to get it) and give them the special mechanic of not having a banish pile. Card is negated and banished? It’s negated and depleted instead. Events are used and depleted, not banished. All cards that banish when depleted do their extra thing but don’t get banished, because there is no banish pile.

Boom, Acolytes are interesting. Their support badges would still need a second pass, but I’ll bet you a lot of savvy players would give the class a second look even though FS and NS can pump out damage and combos like nobody’s business. In PvE, we’d still be a slower ramp-up class, but that’d be fine if significant levels of recovery plus no banish pile actually made us a threat eventually. Right now, the ostensible master of recovery is no more likely to survive a nuke in a brawl than anyone else, or really any better able to recover from one that they survive – and meanwhile the damage output of their badges is far lower.

Also, this idea would force 5th Planet to actually address PM and similar situations directly, instead of just trying to band-aid them with banish-on-play mechanics and Helios (an ally which will be banished or depleted by most high level brawls and missions, and NW’d in PvP. Just sayin’.)

Suggestion #2: Address WC nuking before it gets any more out of control. There are already cards that address the MC buildup problems in CotD, and they’re way past overdue in LoH. The latest megabrawl just broke the whole thing wide open. So many players have access to WC buildup, and once that train starts rolling, the only thing that can stop it are, predictably enough, a lucky LDE or a PM. Stacking 4 copies of Brain Drain is not going to get the job done against any serious player, and it’s going to trivialize any Brawls that don’t have stupid blanking mechanics, or ridiculous (and unstoppable) WC mechanics of their own.
