I don't program in AS3 either, but from what I saw in the documentation, the computeSpectrum method will show the intensity of a sound, such as in Music Catch. Music Catch is able to tell when the song is louder, and will throw out more notes at that point. It will not determine when to place a note based on its pitch. To corretly and accurately place each note you still have to map it, and use the .position property to sound files to get the sound accurate.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Keep in mind that one of the great things about flash programming is how easy it is to use. Sonny, for example, only took two months to make, and is one of the most popular flash games ever. There is Only One Level is a great example of a popular game that took no time to make. It was entirley made in one day, yet it has gotten millions of views and an extremley high rating. If you are working full time making flash games, it should be pretty easy to pump out several great games during a year.

Flash developing is a great way to start game programming. Its easy to learn and easy enough to make games. Last year I made a crappy game in a couple of days which has gotten popular enough to make me a couple hundred dollars. While a few hundred dollars wouldn't last me in the real world, its great for a student. I don't have to do ANYTHING at all and I know that I'm going to make $1 today.

When you get a game sponsored by a gaming portal, it usually is site locked. If you check out Armorgames, they get their games out a week or so before the games come out everywhere else. This is one of the things that happen when you get a game sponsored.

One of the reasons we're seeing so many of ArmorGame's games on the front page right now is because jmtb02 went on a rampage and started to make games instantly or something. The latest games part of the front page is filled with games like There is Only One Level and The Next Floor are results of this.

Brad Borne (the creator of Fancy Pants Adventures) uses AS2 only, for example. Many other games such as Hedgehog Launch also use AS2. There isn’t anything lazy about AS2, its just a preferred language to some people. It has its limitations, but it can still do most of what AS3 can do. I am a AS2 user and I have yet to go “Dang, too bad I can’t do this in my programming language.”

How do you know that Hedgehog launch is made in AS2?

All in All, AS3 allows for more capabilities and an overall better game.

As a big fan of jmtb02's games, I check his site daily. I rember him saying on his blog that his game Fox Fyre was his first game to use AS3 OOP. I could be wrong as my memory sometimes isn't the best.

Yes, AS3 is a great language and I encourage anyone who wants to to learn it. I'll probably learn it eventaully my self, but at this moment I am content with what I know and don't feel the need or want to learn a new language.

Ok, cool.

Just tell me your ideas and I'll make the game for you. I promise. You can upload it onto Kongregate yourself and call it your own game if you want too.

Here's the catch:

I'll charge $20.00 an hour for making this game. I also expect to get 75% of the money from ad-impressions, winning contests, and sponsorships. I also want a down payment of $1000 so I can invest in some of the best art and sound software out there. I also want a detailed document giving me everything from drawings of levels to precise contol and gameplay elements.

So do we have a deal?

The warning is because flash doesn't like blocks of code too big. If you have a single function that has 1000 or so lines of code, or a huge array, or something you'll get this sort of warning. Your game should still function fine. If you want to get rid of it I suggest you break down your code into smaller chunks.

I understand now. I apologize for calling you a hardcore gamer (I too hate the term). I misunderstood your previous post. My previous post would probably be more appropriate in an IGN board or something similar. I now understand what you mean about motion controls, and I understand what your saying. Sorry 'bout that!

Even so, look around. The Wii is sucessfuly because of its motion controls. Millions of people love motion controls. Even if you don’t, you can’t deny the insane sales the Wii has gotten and how many people love it.

Yep, people like it. I would also like to point out that Disaster Movie grossed 26 million dollars in its opening weekend.

And I would like to point out that because of Disaster Movies sucess, it will probably have a sequal.

Do you know another movie that got negative reivews but was an amizing seller? You may have heard of it, it is called Star Wars: A New Hope. When it came out, "hardcore" movie viewers claimed that it was against their sense of "art" in the movie industry. Back at this time, people didn't go to movies as they do now. Star Wars changed this, and now everyone goes to the theater all of the time!

I’m sure you have. Did you immediatley think “This sucks, I’m gonna go back to my regular controller” as I sure didn’t. How about bowling.

I didn’t for these two examples. Metroid was borderline, but either method works for me.

And I'll repeat again, my father does. My father used to play video games but stopped. Because of the motion controls, he and many others now play video games again. From what I've read you probably consider yourself a "hardcore" gamer. I consider myself a "casual" gamer. Hardcore gamers have a general tendency to forget 75% of the game market. This 75%+ of the market prefers motion controls. No matter what you say, you cannot disprove this fact.

How about when you played Zelda. Did you think “I hate moving my arm for a sword. I’d much rather click a button”.

Oh gods, yes. Motion control is great, but when it comes to combat, I want the responsiveness of pressing a button and knowing I’m swinging a sword, rather than the “immersiveness” of swinging a piece of plastic around.

See above. No matter how many times you express your hate for motion controls, they are sucessful and they are popular. It's time to look around, hardcore gamer. The hardcore apocalypse is coming guys! Take my word for it.

I have yet to meet a person that has told me that pressing a button is more fun than motion controls.

I would say I’m one person who prefers buttons to motion controls, in some scenarios. It isn’t that I’m lazy or anything — having grown up on Mario and Sonic and all them, I’m accustomed to wanting a controller in my hands and a map of buttons that let me do actions in the game. It’s completely un-natural to me to be swinging around when I want to be on the couch playing Zelda, or turning a controller to play Mario Kart (thank goodness for the alternative control schemes). Imitating sports like bowling and tennis are great for it, but everything else just works better on a controller, because it’s much more accurate and responsive. I push the button, I swing. Not, I swing the controller, my avatar flails and it’s in the air whether I hit or miss, or if the game even knows what I want to do.

We must be playing different Zeldas. Are you referring to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess? In this game, you simply have to move your remote 2 inches and it is read. I've never, in my 50 hours of playing that game, had the controller miss one of my strokes. There's something that you wrote that I really enjoied. I'm going to requote it incase someone missed it.

It’s completely un-natural to me to be swinging around when I want to be on the couch playing Zelda, or turning a controller to play Mario Kart

I don't even know where to begin! Are you saying that its more natural to press a button than it is to auctually do the supposed motion? The reason motion controls work is because of how natural and easy they are to use!

Motion controls are only part the reason for the sales. The other half is the whole “Casual/Easier Games Are Here!” sign plastered to the wall. People are going to be much more impulsive to buy a system that says, “You only need to hold one button to play bowling!” compared to “You need to use a d-pad, shoulder buttons, and an X button, along with precision timing, to play bowling!” Why buy the system that will frustrate you when this other system has easier games, easier control schemes, and even some attempts, albeit poor, at exercise?

Plus, look at the titles on the Wii. Which would you buy: The system with the mascots that actually have personality and character, or the systems with the big guns and the quiet guy in the suit of armor? If I were a parent and was thinking of my kids as well as me, I think the choice is pretty easy.

I have trouble telling if you are arguing for or against me in this quote. Yes, I would rather only press one button while playing bowling than 40. Besides for the dwinidling population of hardcore gamers, everyone would! You are right that the Wii is not only sucessful because of motion controls. The wii is a dirsuptive technology. It's reasons for sucess envelop everything from its cost to its virtual console system. These "casual" games are the ones I like to think of as "games for everyone besides for that snotty 2% of the population that thinks that these games are non-games as they are right for me". Casual games sell. Games that appeal to everyone sell. Thats why Wii Play sells. Thats why Super Mario Bros sells. Thats why the Wii sells. Thats why hardcore games do not.

I understand that you guys hate these motion controls, but you can't deny it. They are insanley sucessful. This is why Sony and Microsoft are copying Nintendo. We're coming to a time where everyone's a gamer. There isn't going to be a hardcore gamer. There won't be a casual gamer. It will be like it used to be. Back when there were arcades, people used to go on dates to play video games. Can you imagine that? Imagine picking up girls while playing video games. This is whats happening.

Also, I believe that everyone in the whole world should have some background knowledge in buisness. Here's a link to an article about disruption, and what it is, and how it has happened: I understand that you guys hate these motion controls, but you can't deny it. They are insanley sucessful. Now I think its both bad and good. I don’t wanna fake throw grenades, but it looks alot better then the wii motion stuff. Wether this replaces a new console in the near future (it probably does), but it looks pretty cool and while it wouldn’t really work with alot of games like the installed based of motion based games on the wii it does seem like they be able to concoct some really cool stuff for it.

If you read my first post you'd realize that many of these "cool things" are merley conceptual ideas that may (and will) not be implemented in the final version. Yes, it would be cool to have your arms control a car, but look at the youtube videos I posted. I have yet to see someone drive a car without crashing. These people look like their having such a good time. If it really is tthis fun, why won't microsoft let average gamers play it?

Now I think its both bad and good. I don’t wanna fake throw grenades, but it looks alot better then the wii motion stuff. Wether this replaces a new console in the near future (it probably does), but it looks pretty cool and while it wouldn’t really work with alot of games like the installed based of motion based games on the wii it does seem like they be able to concoct some really cool stuff for it.

If you read my first post you’d realize that many of these “cool things” are merley conceptual ideas that may (and will) not be implemented in the final version. Yes, it would be cool to have your arms control a car, but look at the youtube videos I posted. I have yet to see someone drive a car without crashing. These people look like their having such a good time. If it really is tthis fun, why won’t microsoft let average gamers play it?
</body-html>

How so?

Because it sure as hell isn’t precision, or being confortable.

Have you not played tennis with motion controls? I'm sure you have. Did you immediatley think "This sucks, I'm gonna go back to my regular controller" as I sure didn't. Same with the wii-pointer. Did you think "this is way too accurate and quick to me I want something slower and harder to use like dual analog sticks" the first time you played metroid prime 3? How about when you played Zelda. Did you think "I hate moving my arm for a sword. I'd much rather click a button". How about bowling. How about archery the first time you played wii sports resort. I could go on and on. Each of the above mentioned examples have proved how fun motion controls are. This may be a matter of opinion. You could HATE all of the described examples of motion controls. Looking around, though, I see my non-gaming friends loving these motion controls: how natural they feel and how fun they are to play with. I have yet to meet a person that has told me that pressing a button is more fun than motion controls.

Motion controls are quickly becoming a standered in gaming. Thats why Sony and Microsoft are trying to emulate Nintendo. I don’t know about you, but personally (and what I’ve seen from all of my friends) the wii remote proves to be funner and a better controller than those of the HD twins.

I can only imagine that by this, your friends seem to have more fun than the people in the teaser videos Microsoft are releasing. After all, it wouldn’t make any sense to claim that Natal isn’t fun just yet.

I wasn't saying that Natal wasn't fun in this post. I was saying that motion controls are superior to regular controls. I was saying that the classic controller that is used by Sony and Microsoft isn't nearly as fun as a wii-remote.

You also say that the Natal is going to make money. It isn’t. I can say this right now because I know that Microsoft’s buisness strategy isn’t the same as any other company. Microsoft can lose millions of dollars on a bad product and still be fine. I point to the XBox360 as a good example of this. Microsoft’s goal is not to make a profit off of gaming, its to control it.

Companies don’t become as massive as Microsoft by pouring money into random projects. You make it sound as if they’re a sinister bunch of villains out to ruin everyone’s good times. Were you brought up by obsessive Mac-worshipping parents? (Certainly nothing inherently bad about Apple or its customer base, but some seem to get the idea that it’s the only safe way of connecting to the internet…)

I apologize if I seem like I'm anti-Microsoft. I really am not. I own both a PC and a Mac, and I love both for different reasons. I'm not saying that Microsoft is evil, I'm just explaining their buisness model. It is a fact that Microsoft can lose millions of dollars in sales while other companies simply cannot.

The reason Microsoft went into gaming in the first place was because they saw Sony as a threat and needed to fight back.

Microsoft went into gaming in 1990… Not a lot of threats present back then.

Here you are right. I miswrote what I was thinking. In 1990, Microsoft was in gaming and was very successful from it. There was a difference between PC games and console games at this time; very rarely were console games ported to the PC and vice versa. Microsoft had control over the PC game market. When Sony's PS1 was made, it was much more like PC games, and threatened Microsoft. The X-Box was created to fight back Sony's Playstation and retain some of MS's former customers. I meant that Microsoft went into console gaming to fight back Sony.

The wii remote is much simpler which is why people have started to make games again.

The Wii tapped into a huge market of casual gamers. Before this though, the industry was hardly on its last legs. Halo 3 and GTA 4 enjoyed monumental sales; probably not from the same people who purchased Wii Fit. Why not wait until Natal is actually released, and judge it on its own merits, rather than its brand?

The game industry is not on its last legs, but has been dieing for years. The only growth in sales has come from population growth and gamers getting older and being able to buy more games. Halo 3 and GTA 4 sold well, that is true. Compare the sales of these "hardcore" games to the expanded audience games. Wii Play and Wii Fit have had rediculous sales. One thing thats important to acknowledge is that Wii Play has not had a price drop from its release 2 years ago, and is still selling extremley well.

I will judge Natal when it is released, I know that I could be completely wrong with my speculations, but whats the point of this thread if not to discuss what Natal may be like when it comes out?

I doubt that. I know thats what was stated, but it will be delayed. And delayed again. And when it gets released (if it does) it will release quietly and be a disappointment. I expect it to be another Microsoft surface. Anyone remember that?

It will make money, but can hardly be called the future of gaming. It will never replace the controller because motion control is simply inferior to a regular controller.

Thats not at all what I'm saying. Natal is overhyped, yes, but motion controls are not. The Wii has proved to be a disruptive technology and its controller really has disrupted gaming. I am a causual gamer and I love playing with my motion controller, be it to shoot enemies in Metroid Prime or to play tennis wiht my friends. Motion controls have brought my friends and family back into the realm of gaming. The Wii is the most sucessful console ever, mainly due to motion controls.

Motion controls are quickly becoming a standered in gaming. Thats why Sony and Microsoft are trying to emulate Nintendo. Back in the days before the PS1, there was a fine line between console gaming and PC gaming. Now, the only difference between a console and a computer is that a console game is played on your TV. Thats why any console game can easily be ported onto the computer. The reason Microsoft went into gaming in the first place was because they saw Sony as a threat and needed to fight back.

Natal (in theory if all of the presented features make into the end product) will be extremley expensive to make. It will not sell well either because the controller is no longer a barrier to gaming. Non-gamers use controllers all the time to turn on televisions and such. It was the bulky controller with a bunch of buttons that drew them off of gaming. The wii remote is much simpler which is why people have started to make games again. Natal is doing what is called "overshooting" the market with motion controls too extreme for the market to want.

The shootorials will teach you the most important commands for making ANY game. You could probably make a platformer based on what you to in the shootorial.

AS2 is easier to learn, and I'd suggest that for beginners. Most professional programmers use AS3, as it has more capabilities, but you'd probably be best of with AS2

Could be wrong, its just an idea.

I could be wrong, but I think it may have to do with the way you attatch your movie. When you are attatching your movieClips, they are both placed on the same depth, as 100+iNr=100+gNr. Try using _root.getNextHighestDepth instead and see if that works.

My thoughts on Natal:
1. First off, I want to say that I think that its a joke, a marketing tool, and will be severely overhyped. Several of the things that have been stated when NATAL was first announced, such as scanning the skateboard and being able to use it in the game, have been admitted to being fake. SOURCE

2. I still don't understand how NATAL is supposed to work. I mean, lets say I'm playing a racing game. The camera is sensing my arms controlling the car. Now lets say my dog walks in front of the camera. What happens? Does my car crash?

3. Watch this video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-443dE5-gk

The people driving the cars are crashing all of the time. The people playing this demo were hired to play it. Why don't you think Microsoft has allowed regular gamers to play the game? Its because Natal was only created to gain hype. Don't believe me? Look at this video as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELcJHTRlRSc
At first, this will look like just another gameplay demo with selected individuals playing it. Pay close attention at :57 of this second video. It is the exact same footage as 1:07 in the first video (credits to this guy for pointing this out). These "gameplay" demos are nothing more than advertisements to generate hype.

4. People buy video game consoles to play video games. Some other features such as DVD playing are nice, but they are placed as an afterthought. One of the reasons why the PS3 is selling so horribly is because of its price. This high price is due in part from all of the extra features, such as blue-ray support, put into the machine. I really don't care if it has a whole bunch of extra features, I just want to play my games.

5. The wii motion control is amazing in part because it changes the way we play ALL games. I can make it a steering wheel, sword, gun, and tennis racket. NATAL can hardly do anything. How are you supposed to move around in a 3d world if you don't have a controller to move around with? Maybe I'm being unimaginative, but NATAL seems like it can only change the way we play SOME games, not ALL games.

Natal is created to create hype. It will be overhyped. When it is released (if it is ever released, it may just be delayed forever) it will be a disappointment. Even if it can provide everything that it has presented, I still feel happier with my Wii-mote to play games.

Just my thoughts.

(mostly everything)

Ah!, whenever i use flash player 8 or 7, it makes it show only 1 block, but flash player 5 and 6 accuatly shows what he has!. no wonder i only have 1 block xd.

So should i just use flash 5 or 6? or is there a tutorial like this for flash player 8?

TonyPri's tutorials were written in flash 5. He wrote them in ActionScript 1 rather than Actionscript2/3 which you are probably using. Because his tutorials are dated, you'll have to learn the concepts that he presents in Actionscript 1 and convert them to match the language you're writing in, rather than just cutting and pasting his code. Since you'd rather learn how the stuff works, I suggest that you use flash player 8 and use his code to write code of your own.

The shootorials are also amazing. I really suggest you use them. They aren't platformers, but they are a real help if you want to start learning AS2.
