You guys might want to reconsider posting your email like that. Some bots scan the internet for email addresses to use/spam etc.

That’s why a lot of people write blahlbah(at)balmail(dot)com.

You guys never cease to amaze me. I didn’t even know about most of that. The only problem with that would be that you can’t access each shape individually after that (which I don’t want to) because it is actually only one MC (which I didn’t know you could do [drawRect multiple times, that is]). I think I could code the thing I want now.

Cheers

Topic: Game Programming / The supplied DisplayObject must be a child of the caller.

The code draws a shape, then puts it in the box… now that that drawign is finished, it makes a new one and puts that new one in. If I press left, right, up… It will create 3 box’s: Red, Blue and Green. That certainly works.

	import flash.events.*;
	import flash.ui.Keyboard;

	public class action extends MovieClip
	{
		//vars
		public var shape:Sprite = new Sprite();
		public var color:int;
		public var trio:Array = new Array()

		public function action()
		{
			//constructor
			stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, keypress);
		}

		public function keypress(e:KeyboardEvent)
		{
			switch(e.keyCode)
			{
				case Keyboard.LEFT:
				color = 0xff0000;
				break;

				case Keyboard.UP:
				color = 0x00ff00;
				break;

				case Keyboard.RIGHT:
				color = 0x0000ff
				break;
			}
			shape.graphics.lineStyle(2);
			shape.graphics.beginFill(color);
			shape.graphics.drawRect(trio.length * 50, 0, 50, 50);
			shape.graphics.endFill();
			trio.push(addChild(shape));

			if(trio.length > 3)
			{
				while(trio.length > 0)
				{
					var obj:* = trio[0];
					obj.parent.removeChild(obj);
					trio.shift();
				}
			}
		}
	}
}

This shows my full code, with the new stuff inserted.

As I expected, a new error :O

TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
	at action/keypress()

And for future reference, the new code is turning it into an object so that it can be removed (I assume), why couldn’t that be done before?

Topic: Game Programming / The supplied DisplayObject must be a child of the caller.

I’m coding a simple file that draws different coloured squares depending on what arrow you press. It’s very simple, but I keep getting the error (titled).

package
{
	//imports

	public class action extends MovieClip
	{
		//vars

		public function action()
		{
			stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, keypress);
		}

		public function keypress(e:KeyboardEvent)
		{
			switch(e.keyCode)
			{
				// checks what button is down, returns a color
			}
			shape.graphics.lineStyle(2);
			shape.graphics.beginFill(color);
			shape.graphics.drawRect(trio.length * 50, 0, 50, 50);
			shape.graphics.endFill();
			trio.push(addChild(shape));

			if(trio.length > 3)
			{
				while(trio.length > 0)
				{
					removeChild(trio.shift());
				}
			}
		}
	}
}

For better reference, the ful error is:

ArgumentError: Error #2025: The supplied DisplayObject must be a child of the caller.
at flash.display::DisplayObjectContainer/removeChild()
at action/keypress()

I have tried suggestions of adding “stage.” before the add/removeChild and have probably tried switching things around and adding/removing stuff for half an hour, to no avail.

Thanks for any replies.

P.S. I realise my code is absolutely flawed, allowing any key press to initiate some code that should not be, but that is the way I set it out to show you the problem.

Topic: Game Programming / *RESOLVED* How to remove item from array?

I’m not going to write up specific code, as this suggestion probably isn’t very helpful anyway, but couldn’t you just set a loop to check for the closest ‘null’, or empty slot in the array, then addChild where you checked. This would remove the need for correcting the slots, but might not be what you’re looking for.

I’m not really sure what you mean by this. Do you mean that if you press A,B,C… C wont be detected, but as soon as you press D… C is detected but D isn’t?

Topic: Game Programming / Need simple help: Drawing a circle in AS3.

I honestly can’t figure out where I went wrong in my coding. Sure I’m fairly new to this, but this seems very simple. Maybe someone can check my coding:

package {

	import flash.display.*;

	public class Main extends MovieClip {

		public var circle:MovieClip = new MovieClip();

		public function main() {
			circle.graphics.lineStyle(1);
			circle.graphics.beginFill(0xff0000);
			circle.graphics.drawCircle(200,200,50);
			this.addChild(circle);
			circle.graphics.endFill();
		}
	}
}

Ctrl+Enter reveals nothing on screen.

I believe it has correct linkage aswell (the pencil icon takes me straight to the .as file)

Topic: Collaborations / Name Please

If we knew about a storyline/plot or certain gameplay, we could certainly make a more suitable name. You can’t make many names just knowing there are three opposing forcing (maybe include the word “tri”; triwar?) and they are fighting (struggle, enforced, endless war).

There really isn’t an appropriate forum for this, but the guys here seem pretty helpful, so:

I’m looking on scripting and making a music based game (I don’t want to divulge it’s [what I believe to be very unique] gameplay yet) and I was hoping you guys could help me get a list of games that are music based. I’m not looking for game ideas from them, but I want to work out what style art I want to use. I love it when art is made around the beats like in music catch, but I can’t remember any of the other games with this style. I also like the black background with glowing features like in MC

Question is, can anyone help me get a list of games with a music based art scheme (or a techno-type art, if that makes sense to anyone but me)?

Dude seriously? Just stop. Im an artist, personally I look at my stuff and Im my own worst critic, thats what being an artist is. What gets me by and what makes me like what I do is someone elses take on it. Im very passionate about games and I WANT to take my art in that direction and than someone like you come on here and diss me for my IDEA of a game id totally do all the art for? That shit offends me cos you have nothing to contribute but your big gaping hole of insults and criticism you call your MOUTH. Im an ass? read through all my posts and more over my game comments and sit there in confidence calling me the ass.

Mate, I have obviously offended you with my second post, which was wrong of me and I have already apologised for, but the rest of this is just looping endlessly. I think you probably are a great artist, but you have been throwing insults at me with every post and I am just trying to be logical with each one. About the “your an ass” thing, it’s not that you are mean to other people, but the way you have handled this situation.

But really, I’d just like to lay out what I think now:

When you post story ideas on here, you are going to get critisism, I wasn’t the only person to give you critisism, and I wouldn’t have been the last, BUT mine was out of line and I couldn’t have made it more positive, so I want to let all of this go and just leave what we said waaay back there, so perhaps you can get your game on the road. Agreed?

I take it your British or Australian with the whole “mate” thing. I AM NOT your Mate. It’s just as insulting when i’m called “Bro” by some Jock in the States. It’s demeaning in that you ASSUME I’m cool with you when I’m obviously not.

Your apology is denied and you know why? YOU could have whispered this but instead you make a public display which is very pathetic so that in your effed up brain, you come out the better person. I’m sure alot of people reading this will side with you, some might side with me… I really don’t care. But it ends now. Pls do not respond to anything I say on here, I do not care how nice it is ….. just don’t cos you irritate me… not just what you’ve said but YOU irritate me.

YOU could have whispered this entire argument, but you didn’t. Why do you ASSUME I need others sympathy when I’m fairly sure nobody would bother reading through this.

And if you knew anything about the term ‘mate’ you’d know it had nothing to do with you being my mate. Infact, I think your an complete idiot. I wouldn’t have said this earlier as I usually try to work through things without this sort of crap, but I am going to have to sink to your immature level. I mean, who the hell revokes the oppurtunity to make things civilised. Your a wanker.

OH ok, so when I “removeChild” I’m just removing them from the screen. Not from existance?

edit: Can somebody explain the difference between me trying to remvoe each one individually and me shifting them out?

edit:

Ok, so simply:

removeChild(army[j])
removes the movieclip ONLY from the displaylist, while
removeChild(army.shift())
removes the entire first (army(0)) piece of array?, and
removeChild(army.splice(0, army.length – 1))
would remove everything? (sorry I can’t test this ATM)
