Topic: Game Programming / Best way to deal with game save persistence

I want to develop game that will be release online and mobile (and maybe desktop). I would like to solve problem of keeping game save data in browser. My previous experience with flash games is that I can’t rely on it – browser often clear it’s data nad many users reported me that they have lost game progress.

First thing that comes to my mind is that I should ask user to “sign up” (for example email + password) and store all data on the server side. What bothers me is fact that as a player I don’t like when I have to sign up to play a game.

The other problem is with mobile version. It’s very unusual to make sign up/login functionality in mobile games but I would like to make it consistent with online version.

Of course I have some options:
- make it optional
- make it unobtrusive

I wonder if you solve this kind of problem or know good examples of games which solved it?

“Say, could any copyright issues be possible?”

I think it’s not a problem. Original company which released it dosn’t exists anymore. The original game was released as free free years ago.

“Is it possible to scroll map without moving?”

Yes, just drag and drop map with mouse.

This isn’t chaotic, it’s only the visible part of the level (original levels had ~80×36 dimension), and this level is something like self-designed, I don’t remember this block sequence in the original. :)

Yes, it is new level. There are 60 completely new levels. Original levels are as bonus.

I’m not talking about the level design, but the visuals. All colors are very saturated, and the different blocks don’t connect with eachother. Also, the light source seems to be different on all blocks.

Yeah, you are right. I know that graphics are not so good but I don’t have money for better graphics (this is hobby project). Anyway I will try to lower saturation.

Topic: Kongregate APIs / Detect that game is played in Kongregate context?

Hello.

I’m trying to implement Kongregate API (statistics). My game will be probably distrubuted to many sites. I want to detect if someone is played in kongregate context and then send statistics . How should I do this? Should I detect url from which game is loaded? (chat.kongregate.com)

So what I have to do my game has review by fgl employee? Do I have to check “Allow Preview-Player Viewing” option during game uploading?

Do you use Mochi Live Updates for your games? If yes then could you tell me if it has any problems or is just 100% transparent for users?

Topic: Game Programming / Preloader doesn't work

Did you add option “-frame” to compiler?
-frame start “Main”

I use the same method as you and also embedding mp3 with [Ember(…)] meta tag and I have no problem with preloader (music is loaded in a second frame).

Topic: Game Programming / [AS3] Underscores for private variables...again

I’ve been strugling with the same thing when I started programming in AS3. I concluded that using ‘_’ prefix for all private/protected variables is not as bad as I thought at the beginning. It’s just a matter of time.

Leading cups probably would be much harder for me. First big letter is translated by my brain to “aha, it’s class name” :).

Topic: Game Programming / Analytics for flash games

Do you use “google analytics” like services for your flash games? I will test http://playtomic.com/ (it’s free) but wonder if there are any other services like this.

If you use such a service what do you measure?
Thanks for your help.

Guys, are you talking about internal preloader? What about external preloader? You don’t have change anything in your main project (no extra frame etc.). External preloader just load .swf file and after it’s loaded it’s adding it to the stage.

Google for ‘as3 external preloader’. Example links:
http://doogog.com/actionscript-3-external-preloader.html
http://www.zedia.net/2008/the-right-way-to-do-a-preloader-in-as3/

I thought that external preloader is ‘the way to go’ in flash world.

As a second game you can write Tetris. It has enough challenges to overcome.

Thanks for all replys.

It looks like I have to forget about exclusive license. So what would you recommend for me? Non-exclusive licenses + in-game ads?

You’re never going to get enough plays on YOUR personal site to get ad revenue. Don’t bother. If you try and get people to come to your site, your sponsor won’t sponsor it (they want that extra content on their site).

But what if I want to sell exclusive licence with my game but with only X % of levels included? And I will tell player that all other levels are only on my site? (game will be still very playable and it will take several (or even tens) of hours to finish them)

Does it make sense?

Maybe you wonder why I want so much to get player to my site? Because I believe that my game can be something more than “yet another game to play and finish in 1 hour and forget it”. I want to try make community around my game. They will be making new levels etc.

And of course I still want to make money (because I invested my spare time to make game).

Topic: Game Programming / Monetizing and distributing game - methods

I’m trying to read about monetizing flash games and there are a few methods to do that. I see some terms which I don’t understand and don’t know where to search explanation of them. They are: exclisive sponsorhip, non-exclusive sponsorhips, site locking, sell game licensing.

I would like to know how they works, how they are related to each other. I want know if for example I can use ads (in game) with those methods.

What about copyrights?

They are many possibilites and I’m condused.

Here is my case. I have almost finished game and would like to:
- reach as many players I can (here I think to sent my game to all ‘big players’)
- make money displaying ads on external sites
- try to get as many players and redirect them to my site (it will be game homepage), game played on external sites won’t have all levels included
- make money displaying ads on my page (ad sense for example + in game ads), maybe some premium content
- make community around my game (of course if it will ‘click’)

I’m wondering also about sending game to other sites. If I do that how I will update (fixing bugs etc) my game?

Topic: Game Programming / AS3 -> MySQL

All client side technoligies (including flash/flex) can’t talk to mysql directly (even if it could you wouldn’t want that, trust me) . You have to write some server side scripts or backend for that (php, ruby etc).

I gives me 2x true (as I expected). Why do you think = should give false in this case? = is nothing about ‘temporary variables’. = is '’ + type checking (which means 4 == ‘4’ gives true but 4 === ‘4’ gives false).
