You rush out the way you came, stepping on the smaller snakes behind you as you leave. Flinging your sword and dagger into the slithering mass. The snakes quizzically inspect these weapons, and let you go without harm. As you turn the corner, you activate the recall and both appear in your hands.
You’re at a fork. There are two halls behind you, and the snake-infested one you just came from. Looking out from the snake hallway, you believe the right one leads back to town. The left one is littered with corpses, but remembering your earlier quests, you also believe it’s the way to the outpost that needs fortifying. There are no other visible exits.

Curious as to the description of The Sewers. It’s not a failed execution, The Sewers are a device of the kingdom. Not gonna reveal too much, because I’d like people to stick around for the story later, but it’s intentional The Sewers are there. And while the people know there are foul creatures down there, none are aware of the going-ons in the Darkness, save for the occasional earthquake of the monsters’ doing.

A better description would be something like: The trails of a dead man. or Monsters and Criminals and Corpses, oh my!

You shake the snake off your leg, and back up a bit. Stepping over the small snakes, you get a better position, and begin hacking into the slithering, hissing mass. Down goes a four-footer. A small one makes it up your back, you swat it down. A large, thick one slithers out of the mass and ties around your legs. You stab and hack at it, yet it stays around you. You see bigger snakes writhing through the mass, coming for you.
Hacking desperately, you make some progress but they soon overpower you, and you lie there, a feast for a lucky snake. Your last thought is something about the number of snakes who will make it to adulthood, something about starvation and eating things whole. You’re too busy watching your life flash before your eyes to follow it.

With a quick scan around the room, you find there’s many chains on the walls and ceiling. There are some lose stones, and what’s not covered in snakes is mossy and damp. There’s a crack in the wall that looks like it could lead somewhere.
A snake coils around your leg, and you’re forced back to the situation at hand. You’re surrounded on all sides, with the largest snakes in front of you.

Sorry ‘bout the inactivity, got two new Steam games I’ve fallen in love with.

You assess your guards discreetly, taking in their armor and weapons. One carries sword and shield, whilst the other carries spear and shield. They have very light armor, With weakpoints on the sides. There’s no armor protecting their necks.
You proceed to the Wizard, guided by your guards, and enter his house, which apparently lacks a door. He is meditating, but pauses and looks you in the eye. You feel a strange presence in your mind. What is it, newcomer? he asks, without asking. When you open your mouth to reply, the voice comes again. No need for words. I’ll sense your reply.
You feel offended having your private thoughts shared with him, but when this feeling comes across you, he smiles a weak smile. What’s an old Hermit going to do with these thoughts of yours? Now, where’s that bottle you’ve gotten for me?
You pull out the bottle, and place it in front of him. He asks to see the weapons, and you give them to him. Saying a few words in a language foreign to you over each weapon, they in turn glow for a bit, and runes are magically inscribed upon each.
He comes again into your mind to explain the enchantments. Your sword will work on it’s own, cooperating with you and seeking out weak points and vulnerabilities. Your shield has been made to resist both elements and blows, and has been made unbreakable. Your spear will never miss a target, provided you aim it in the right direction. Your knife has been made to cut anything it comes in contact with, but it will never harm you. All of these have a sort of recall function as well. As long as you can see the object, and have access to your consciousness, visualize it in your hand, and it will be there.
Now, take these, and get back to your wife
he says with a smile.
He resumes meditating.

“Let’s say I’m capable of taking out people you don’t like,” you say quietly, aware of the shady characters nearby.
The man hands you the bottle, and says, equally quietly, “Come back again when your guards aren’t standing at the door,” he says, and motions to the guards, standing watchful at the entrance, yet inept to the conversation.
You exit the bar, guards regrouping behind you.

“Nope, that’s all,” you say, leaving to go to the bar. When you arrive, you find it’s a shady place in the back of town. You get a criminal vibe from the men inside, but seeing as everyone in the damn place is a criminal, that’s normal.
You walk up to the bartender, “Can I get a bottle of somethin’?” you ask discreetly. After a few questions you have no answers to, he pulls out a bottle of something. Dark and murky, it doesn’t look drinkable.
“You know how this place works, right?”
“Huh?” you ask.
“How you’re going to pay for this. This whole place works on favors. Some guys’ll try to convince the new guys these little bone rings are worth anything, but we have no real currency. So, back to favors, what are you going to do for me?”

“Yeah, I can take care of a few snakes,” you say confidently, “any place around here that offers enchantments?” you then ask.
“Yeah, there’s an old wizard who got shoved in here a few years back, he’s come to be called “The Hermit,” because he doesn’t leave his house, not even to eat. His magic keeps him alive, and he accepts very few visitors, but those that do get allowed in come out with powerful magical artifacts. Bring him a gift, my advice. He’s quite fond of alcohol, though he won’t admit it, even though the stuff down here is made from some pretty sketchy ingredients."
“Speaking of such, where’s the bar?” He gives you clear directions.
“That it?”

You make your way, guards behind you, back to the barracks. You spot Gondar, and after a few seconds with a couple of guards, he motions you over. “Just visited the mayor, he said you might have some work for me.”
“Ah yes, let’s see…” He mutters a thing or two about paper scarcity, and then demands of one of the soldiers, “Oi! What things need done?”
The man, thinking for a bit, comes up with, “That old serpent not far from here layed eggs. Last time I was on guard duty around there I stomped about five of the little fuckers. Don’t need anymore 30 foot bastards slithering around here.”
One passing guard hears the conversation, and interjects, “And that old giant has been making lots of noise recently. He might’ve grown a new head, that dirty bastard.”
A third, “What about that dragon with it’s cave a few hundred yards from here? He needs disposing of, already took out seven men, sleeps on their bones, I hear.”
They seem glad when you’re thrown off and look a bit pale, but they all pat you on the back and keep moving, sharing a hearty chuckle.
“Oh yes,” Gondar says, “There’s a demon loose in the town, possessed some poor soul, though we don’t know who it is. I think that snake bit was true, and then there’s the outpost not far from here, word is the necromancer is meant to hit it soon, needs some fortifying.”
Better hide out a bit here, until you can find a way back to the surface. Until then, best help the town, even if it’s only a temporary dwelling.

Sorry for the long post. It’s kinda necessary at this point. If you’ve already read Antigamefire’s post, you can skip the first paragraph. Also, Helltank, sorry, started typing before your post, got sidetracked, never refreshed.

“The Republic of Gorn got decimated in it’s attempts to dominate the neighboring country of Firm," you begin, “Due to the defeat, most of Gorn’s natural resources got expended and everyone had to give a portion of their possessions to Firm for retribution, or face counteraction. Inevitably, Gorn fell into a depression and times were hard for everyone. Mr. Aspenal (The current ruler of Gorn) took control and make it a guard state, resulting in increased guard numbers and guard brutality. This is where I had to fend for myself against the guards, and this is how it ended up,” you finish.
By the time you’re done, and passed many a corpse, you arrive at the town, however you don’t know if you can really call it a ‘town.’ Passing through the one heavily guarded exit, you see it’s a collection of ramshackle huts and buildings. Most appear to be made from the bones of men and monsters long past, which makes sense. Corpses seem to be the only renewable resource down here, and given the number of executions aboveground in the recent years, it makes sense.
You walk through the network of bone-huts, and shortly arrive at the barracks, placed close to the entrance for military purposes. There, you’re given a shield and sword, a spear, and a pocket knife. The man you first met explains to the officer what you’re supposedly in for, and the officer then watches you carefully, but otherwise seems friendly enough. As there are no visible signs you’re a sociopath, he has no problem lending you a weapon. However, due to protocol, you must be watched carefully by two guards your first couple of days with the town.
Your guards escort you to the mayor’s building, and usher you inside. There, waiting, is a plump man, hair cut neatly short, with bags under his eyes contributing even more to his cold stare. He’s neither tall nor short, and possesses an aura of importance, yet he also seems battle-worn.
“Ah, the new guy. Your reputation precedes you, I’ve heard of your killing of the troll,” This reminds him of something, and he whispers to a servant a message to the military officer. You catch that it’s probably to do with the troll’s corpse. “I suppose you’ve already been given your weapons,” you display your sword, and he nods, “Yes, I suppose you’ll make a fine warrior, if that troll is any proof. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay here in my little town, ‘Survival’ as the citizens call it. You might find a job worth doing at the bar, or you can check in with Gondar, the officer over at the barracks for military work.”
You think he just wanted to get a look at you, as is probably protocol for new citizens. As you and your guards leave, he shouts after you, “And don’t kill anyone, if you can help it.”

Okay, two regs, guess it’s a go.

“I’m in for repeated murder, actually,” you say, looking tough. The men are visibly shaken, and half-ready their weapons.
“We uh, we don’t get many of those down here. Usually good folk trying to get back to their families, although we do find a few sociopaths down here.” He seems to realize this might be offensive, and tries to cover himself, when you interject.
“I killed five guards and paralyzed two more for life. One of them couldn’t move a single muscle below his neck.” The dark-haired young man lets out a high-pitched squeal, recovers, and then gives you a steeled look, weapon drawn. “Frankly, I think they were afraid that if they killed me, I would unleash a death curse on them or something.”
The lead man, now shaken, says quietly, “Well, um, I’m sure you had your reasons.” Then, more lively in an attempt to cheer the mood, “Well then! I assume you’d like to get to town and arm yourself! After all, we need good fighters to deal with the growing necromancer threat.”
When you look puzzled, he adds, “Oh yes, of course! You didn’t know there was a town. Well, there is. The oldest members, bloody criminals though they were, founded it a few years back. If you’re really interested in the history, I think one or two are still alive…” He trails off, and then regains himself. “Ah yes, I said something about the necromancer. First one that’s threatened the town in years, but seeing as all these corpses lying around here, it’s no easy task to beat him off. Come to think of it, we should get a squad out to claim that troll you slew.”
You debate staying here and getting more information, but a distant shuffling sways your vote, and you get walking with the men back to ‘town,’ them having packed up their goods.
“So what’s it like back on the surface? The last men who came through said you guys were on the brink of a war.”

Wow, you guys really aren’t thinking like desperate men wanting to get back to their wives. Whatever. :P Going with Kirby’s action.

“I’m a friend!” you shout, “Don’t kill me!” He lowers his second spear, and waves you over. He’s got a small camp, but it looks like he’s got at least a stash somewhere, since he’s low on supplies and food.
“So, I assume you’re new? What are you in for?” he asks.
You decide it’s best not to get too trustworthy with him, and decide to leave out the whole murder accusation. “A few petty thefts, trying to feed my family.”
“Really? They usually don’t send thieves down here.” He checks to see if you have all your limbs, and when you do, he seems puzzled. “Well anyway, congrats on getting past the troll. I suppose you used the lamp?”
“Yeah, I broke it over it’s head.”
“Oh, guys, he broke the fucking lamp.” the man calls to behind him, where his two companions have gathered to listen in.
“Oh fuck, man, you broke the fucking lamp?” a scawny, dark-haired man in his 20’s asks.
“Um, yeah, I used it to kill the troll though.”
There’s a shocked silence, and then the man who greeted you first shouts, rather gleefully, “Well I’ll be damned! We got a fighter here. Sure you’re in here for theft, and not something more gruesome?”

You go through the passage, crawling on your stomach. After what you assume was a couple minutes, you see a light, blinding and welcoming. You come out, and as you’re standing yourself up, a spear flies over your head. You narrowly dodged another bloody demise.
“Damn… Friend or Foe?” a voice says.
“Huh?” you shout back, rather confused, but yet happy to find another human. You can’t see him, still blinded by the light, but his silhouette looks normal enough.
“Do you want to live, or not.” he calls back.

You make your way through the scattered bones, through the hall the troll burst from. There is a large room which splits into several passageways, none of which look safe. You hear rumbling, and something’s shuffling in the passageway to your left. You wonder if this was really a good idea, and if you should have gone a different way.

You feel the room is ominous, so you grab the lamp, ready your femur, and venture carefully out into the room, opposite the bone-pile entrance. A giant half-troll, half-lion creature bursts through the heap, scattering the bones. A skull flies at you, but you deflect it. The beast turns to you, and recoils at the brightness of the lamp.
You take this opportunity to throw your lantern, smashing it over the head of the beast, and lighting it on fire.
You advance with your femur and knock it in the leg with all your force, and hear a satisfying CRACK. While he’s down, you then shove the femur down his throat, causing him to choke and suffocate. He throws up on the wall behind you, unwedging the femur and throwing it across the room in the spew.
Attempting to extinguish the flames, it pummels itself to death with it’s own claws.
