Topic: Kongregate / Memory Leak - Intentional Strategy?

First of all, thank you all for the discussion.

Most memory leaks are super easy to fix. The problem is, they’re incredibly tough to find. Even worse is when players can tell you there’s a leak, but you test it yourself and it runs fine: it’s almost impossible to find it from that sort of starting point. you have literally nothing to go on if the leak doesn’t happen for you.

Considering how many players will rate a game down for lag, it doesn’t benefit the developers at all to leave a memory leak in their game. If you’re having trouble with a game, the best thing to do is to try to figure out exactly where and when the leak starts to happen, and what may be causing it, and then send a bug report to the developer, or post a comment if bug reports are disabled for the game.

How to send a good bug report: “The game freezes when my rhino starts flashing yellow after I eat 150 pieces of cheese.” The dev can look at that and see that either the cheese or the rhino color changes may be causing the problem.

How to annoy a developer: “the game lags plz fix 1/5 til then”.

That was especially insightful! I’m more likely to write a bug report as long as your post than to annoy a developer, then. ;) I just never get an answer or stick around long enough to see any results. =(

Topic: Kongregate / Memory Leak - Intentional Strategy?

There’ve been quite a few games with memory leaks recently. Even (maybe ‘especially’?) good ones.

Everyone complains about leaks. I’ve never seen devs fixing it. And, mind you, I’ve played a lot of games on Kong. And by “a lot” I mean “an effing lot”. I’m reluctant to believing that devs just can’t fix them. Which brings me to the slightly paranoid theory that memory leaks are left on purpose so that we refresh the page more often, thus raising the game’s play count. On the other hand, if you’re game is so awesome and addicting that everyone will be playing hours straight (and if it has no memory leaks, of course), then your game’s play count will be low.

Am I going too far in thinking this? Should I just stick to Hanlon’s Razor? If I am indeed right, can’t we think of ways of mitigating this problem? Like count only one “play” per player per day? Or count time played, instead of times the game was loaded (probably infeasible, but…).

The ability to select a shorter or longer duration would be a nice addition, but is probably low in priority.

It shouldn’t be, though. As we’ve seen, this option would minimize problems between players. If you’re fast and you would only play against fast players, they would give you that and so on. It’s better than, as stated here, “I think the will to always play fast is what degrades a community.” Yes, it makes you lose interest in the game, since it ends up being more stressful than fun.

And I think that’s waaay more important than worrying about dividing the player pool. I’d rather have a fun and exciting game to play against the exact same person over and over than being able to play a stressing game against potentially 1 million people.

@Fabio

“When you play online it isn’t just about you you you (…) The main reason I mostly avoid MP is how people take so long to end a turn, which is very irritating to me.”

I hope you can see how absurdly selfish that sounded. You shouldn’t be impatient when people take their time.

“Once you get decent”? Who’s to judge that? That’s an arrogant statement. I just wanna have fun while playing the game and I’m entitled to that. Games are supposed to be fun, most of all. And who said I was gonna “look at the gear shift every 30mt”? I just took my time to read ONE card, I lost my turn and then I could never recover until I lost the match on purpose. By the way, I have 45 wins by now, plus the matches I lost, so it’s not like I don’t know the game. Even if I play more against the AI, human players will have cards they don’t and I’ll have to read them anyway.

But what I suggested was that me taking more time in turn A shouldn’t penalize me on turn B, unless I’m completely afk. By the way, I was already penalized when my turn got interrupted. Also, giving players the option to choose turn time would help you find your worthy opponents while I could play with more relaxed people. It’s about giving options, not about forcing you to play against slower players. It’s not about you. No need to ready your weapons and attack. Geez.

There’s something very wrong about turn time.

I once took the time to read one of my opponent’s card and my 20 seconds went away just like that. Not only that but all of my subsequent turns were crazy, since I had almost no time to do anything and ended up losing because all I could was clicking random cards so I would not waste my turn.

I understand that an afk player is annoying and there should be a way to control that. But giving you a time penalty and forcing you to run through the end of the match is just plain stupid and makes no sense! It’s not like it took me 30 seconds to read my opponent’s card (which, in my opinion, wouldn’t be a big deal).

My suggestion is: give a normal turn time EACH turn if the player made at least an action on the last turn. If they didn’t do anything (and clicking on “end turn” SHOULD count as “something”, btw), then their next turn should be only like 5 seconds. If they do ANYTHING on this 5 second turn, add 15 seconds to their time pool so they can have a full turn. And don’t remove the 1s/card bonus!

Games should be fast and that’s fine, but it shouldn’t be ultra fast, unless you have the option to customize the match (with different turn times, so faster players would play with faster players and so on).

Topic: Technical Support / Playlist option missing

By the way, I’m on up-to-date Chrome and I use Vista.

One sloppy solution is as follows:

- Type the name of the game the search bar
- Click on “see more results” instead of clicking on the game’s name
- When you see the search results, hover over the game you wanna add to your playlist until the game info window pops up
- Click on “play later” to add it to your playlist

Topic: Technical Support / Playlist option missing

I’ve had this problems a bunch of times. Now, there are some games that, no matter how many times I refresh the page, the “add to playlist” option won’t show up.

The most recent case is this: http://www.kongregate.com/games/SirKnight/the-man-with-the-invisible-trousers

Topic: Kongregate / RSS Feed for Badges broken?

Ok, I made another one. I have (had?) absolutely no knowledge on this matter, but I think I managed. Here it is:

I’m sorry, but I don’t know. I use Chrome’s RSS Feed Reader to get notifications. It worked for kongregate’s badges until recently.

I’ve been using http://feed43.com/kongregate_badges.xml for quite some time, but it doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Is there an alternative?

TIA

Topic: Technical Support / Fixed - Favorites list no longer shows all favorites

Now it’s working fine again. Am I doing something wrong? Does it just take some time before a game you added actually shows up?

Actually, I guess it’s not working properly. Maybe only for two favorites? I added a third one and not it’s showing only two favorites.

Topic: Kongregate / Suggestions

There should be a direct link to Monitored Post. Like when you hover over the “Community” tab. If you’re monitoring them, it’s because you want easy access to it, right?

As for the “random button” suggestion, didn’t we have that option some time ago? This suggestion’s also on the first page on this thread. If they deactivated it, I’m guessing there’s a reason, even though it IS something good to have around.

Same here. I have only two favorites, only one showing. Using up-to-date Chrome, btw, on Vista. I can see both my favorites on my profile page, though.

Topic: Kongregate / New feature "Playlist?"

I find it very useful. I used the favorites as a playlist, but there were some game that I could play again (like Edmus, which I like), but I unfavorited them so I my “playlist” wouldn’t get too large. Now I can have those two lists and I’m loving it!

I have the option mentioned above, but also a button on the game window, close to where you rate and mark as favorite:

Topic: Kongregate / Petition: Bring back 50 comments per page

include my name on the list… it was hard to navigate through comments before… I hate that I can’t just skip to let’s say, page 50 (like 2500 comments behind), it’s even harder when you have 10 per page.

No, jim_vierling

You get the area limited byt the thin golden frame (since the beginning of the game). So, yeah, that’s pretty much all the area, but, no, the layout is customizable. You use dig and fill tools to make the rooms (or just a big room) as you like. You put the walls, too, which is kinda boring, since you have to steal them from dungeons.

Hey

I’ve playing this game for a long time and I’m wondering how other player’s houses look like. I know it’s not important at all for the game, but I guess we could share what we managed to achieve there.

EDIT: Here’s mine (final version):

Topic: Cloudstone / REQUEST: Confirm before spending Rubies!

I just accidentally hit “get new missions” and lost 3 rubies. I lost my missions as well, which were better than the ones I got. You devs have to be careful, because rubies are real money. People will start to get pissed off and won’t want to pay for more rubies. I also heard someone who lost 8 rubies for accidentally clicking on the finish contract button. Not asking for confirmation is the same as making me buy a product I just accidentally looked at, even though I wouldn’t buy it.

If I could get my 3 rubies back, I’d be a very happy man. (I’m not daydreaming that you’ll give it back, but just add the confirm button ASAP!)

Topic: Cloudstone / Petition: Add action bar slots

First of all:

short·cut
n.
1. A more direct route than the customary one.
2. A means of saving time or effort.

So when we call it shortcuts we’re assuming there is or should be a longer/harder way to get to those. But there isn’t. Thus it doesn’t save me any time because there isn’t any other way to do it. It’s more like the skills and items can be equipped. First of all, it’s totally weird and dumb that they would share those limited slots. Second and most important, there should be a longer way to use all skills and consumable items you have without having to equip them.

My suggestion is that there were a /shortcut/ key to open a menu that could look exactly like the one that pops up when you’re equipping skills/items, but instead of equipping them to slots 1-6 you’d use them immediately. Make it accessible only in places where you can fight, if needed.

EDIT: Not to mention that in the heat of the battle it’s effing hard to find and click that arrow that allows you to change the equipped item/skill.

Topic: Cloudstone / Selling prices and rarity

Obviously, those are really off.

I got an Autumn’s Armour at the arena and I have a Blooming Wand. Let’s compare:

Level: 30 (AA) X 12 (BW)
Rarity: Epic (AA) X Rare (BW)
Extra: Part of a set (AA) X … (BW)
Usefulness: Great for warriors (AA) X err… (BW)

Selling Price: Both are worth 120 gold.

And Breathy Cotton Shorts, for example:

Level: 19
Rarity: Uncommon
(nothing special to add)
Selling price: 1000 gold.

At least give us the option to trade!

Maybe it’s the rarity system that’s effed up? First thing that comes to mind is the bat tongue, which is supposed to be common, but I got only a total of 6 while I was playing.

Here’s a hint to devs: if you want ppl to pay, you should work on these issues. The energy/vigor thing was a good step (despite its downfalls…), but we’re still far from something really good. You wanna make money? You should work harder.
