Topic: Stencyl / Are you working on any games?

Well, I was working on Stencyl game, before Stencyl gone insane and made those stupid subscription thing. I’m ok with paying flat price for a tool I need, but subscriptions? Seriously? WTF?! Stencyl is still great tool though so once they regain their sanity I’ll be more than happy to use it yet again.

//edit: It seems that they still didn’t.

Topic: Kongregate APIs / Kong api for Unity3d?

WTH is that? I want API in actual programming language, not one that isn’t good for anything but webpages (and only because browsers doesn’t support better ones).

Where can I get kongregate api for Unity3d? I cannot find anything in asset store related to this, so I decided to ask here

I’m making Java game with JMonkeyEngine and I wonder if there is Kong API for Java, so I can use features such as badges and Kong hiscores.

Topic: Stencyl / Any good stencyl games?

I remember Bejeweled-like game done that looked AMAZING, and if it wouldn’t have Stencyl’s logo, I would never guessed it was made in it. Dunno if it is here or only on Stencyl.com (don’t remember exact name, but it has something to do with color)
//edit: While I was looking for this game, I’ve found another great one: http://www.kongregate.com/games/FedeehSevenfold/erline

If you’re going after pixelart, try Aseprite. I’s great tool and support animations.

Topic: Stencyl / Stencyl is a failure.

I understood that you’re pro-stencyl. Just wanted to correct some things. Sorry if it wasn’t clear. But I agree Crash Course should be refined and blended with Design Mode Intro (there was something called that when Stencyl was in private beta. Basically it was crash course, but instead of making game, we made behavior. Dunno if it is still there though).

Topic: Stencyl / Stencyl is a failure.

I think you’re in some places right, while in others you’re wrong, Koerni.

Stencyl shouldn’t ever be “make my game for me”-type of program, because such programs are often restricted to one genre (RPG Maker) or are very limited in functionality (original scratch, IG Maker).

But if someone already made code you need (e.g. enemies AI, platforming code) and put it on Forge, why not use it? Is something cool in writing same (or very similar) code doing same thing, when you have code you need on your disposal (Forge)?

Even in my Adventure Island clone (called Adventure Cavern, is on kong too) I’ve used mostly behaviors from Forge, doing my own only for Adventure Island-specific quirks (and even there often there are modified behaviors, for example “hunger” system is basically health pack attached to Irioth (main protagonist of game) with custom health display) and enemy AI.

CUT!

Yeah, and using Windows is unfair to DOS users. Also using any Linux window manager is unfair to people who runs pure XWindows w/out wm, which is unfair to people who use only linux command line.

How above statements are related to your? Both Stencyl and Windows/Windows managers on Linux were made to make things easier. Stencyl was made to make easier game making, Windows/WMs in linux case to use computer in general. So you may be happy with your DOS (coding from scratch) and we have nothing against it, but Stencyl users prefers Windows, or in Linux case Gnome/KDE/Other WM (making games visually).

I don’t use Stencyl ATM, but only because I am occupied with stand-alone game which Stencyl doesn’t support ATM (for now only flash and ios, though in 2.0 stand-alone export will be possible), and even though I don’t use Stencyl for this specific project, I’m not coding it from scratch either.

I’m using free french (not in language, but in origin, there’s English version) program called Game Develop made by Compil Games which is similar in usage to MMF/Construct (don’t have $$$ for MMF and GD is more stable than free Construct Classic as it almost doesn’t crash – if it does it’s your fault in most cases, e.g. you tried to use string where number is required, then tried to compile game, unless there’s critical bug, though hotfix is quickly released if there’s such bug. Plus GD has native Linux version).

I will leave no comments about “And would suck”, because Stencyl-made games doesn’t suck. Games’ developers does (yes, this include me, at least when I made Fear Of Eights, I now made progress as you can see in Adventure Cavern game).

“Looking almost the same” isn’t necessary bad thing. I’ve seen many RPG Maker games which uses same tilesets/sprites all over again (mainly from it’s bundled gfx/sfx/music library called RTP) and even though they looked same, they were good. You can get bored with same graphics after some time, but in the end only interesting quirks in gameplay are important. And gameplay itself.

I’ve cut second part (about Robot wants series), because it is true that it wasn’t made in Stencyl. But it could be done. There are no impossible things, there is only lack of skills. I lack skills in coding so I use Stencyl/other gamemaking software if I feel they’re better suited to the job I trying to do.

Note that I can code, I wrote several “normal” (non-games) apps. However writing games from scratch is too hard for me, specifically collisions system and “writing” levels in code (yeah, I could write level editor/use generic one like tiled, but there’s also thing of writing importer/figuring out how to save/load levels properly).

Topic: Stencyl / Stencyl is a failure.

Well, you can learn to make good games with it. I sucked with Stencyl too, at first. Look up Fear Of Eights unlimited, then play Adventure Cavern (both are on kong). Play with it. Even if you won’t make good games at first, after every try you’ll improve and learn something new. Also reading Stencylpedia isn’t bad thing to do either. Most of articles in it are written using simple language so you’d learn from it many new things too. There so simple that I read it for fun!

So don’t give up, you’ll improve over time.

Topic: General Gaming / Marble Arena level editing help

I’m trying to make some levels for game called Marble Arena (which is in semi-death stage but still many people plays it, at least in Poland), but I have hard time with learning map editor. The only useful bits of information I’ve got from this forum: http://marblearenaforum.motionforum.net/ which is officially dead (the only posts from 2011 are my one – “Darkhog” guy, spambots and other guy who probably posted before seeing that forum is dead, just like me).

Unfortunately images on this forum are dead also so I can’t make full use of tutorials there, where image was used like in materials tutorial.

So if any of you know where I can find working tutorials (with images) or know about some videotutorials, let me know.

And yes, I know MA2 is coming out. I started learning MA1 editor to get used to it as I assume they will use same editor in MA2, only with addition of few new entities and textures.

//edit: Also since MA was obviously made with Cube engine, any Cube edit-mode tutorials should do as well for basic stuff except things ma-specific like materials thing.

Topic: Game Design / Royalty-free sprites for use in commercial game

Do you know sites with royalty-free sprites for use in commercial games? I’m suck at graphics (well, not exactly at ‘graphics’, but rather ‘game graphics’) and at this point don’t have resources to pay anyone for making them for me (I’m really broken).

Of course, I’ll use submit button. I also don’t like games you mentioned, though I don’t take such extreme measures ;). And reason I don’t want to implement kong scores is that I want my games to be viral and don’t want two versions – one for Kong and one for other sites.

Topic: Kongregate / Question regarding MochiScores

I know games can’t have 3rd party ads or login systems. But what about MochiScores? Personally I prefer it over Kongregate’s scores because you can input whatever name you want and it works even when user is not logged in.

But I don’t know if it is permitted.

Topic: Stencyl / Are your games stolen?

My reaction to stuff like this is “Cool, more people will play this”. These things only really matter if you have sponsorship and even then you have good excuse: “Hey, I didn’t upload it there, this is their fault, not mine!”

Topic: Kongregate / Mature games?

How to set game as mature so it’ll not be displayed for minors? I plan on developing mature game with serious gore stuff and certainly don’t want minors to play it and as we know warnings like “THIS GAME CONTAIN VIOLENCE AND CAN BE PLAYE ONLY IF YOU HAVE +18 YEARS” will result in underage’s gamer reaction like “OMG, this is cool, i’ll play it!”. This is called reversal psychology, I believe.

Unfortunately Unity works only on C®a$hdow$ and iShitOS, not on real operating systems like Linux, FreeBSD or Haiku (on the latest Stencyl won’t work either, but Haiku is still in early phase). And by “Unity don’t work”, I mean both webplayer and IDE.

Conclusion: Stencyl is more compatible since it can be ran on more systems, even best ones, while Unity can’t. Therefore Stencyl is superior.

Because Stencyl uses Flixel as it’s backend and Stencyl team didn’t change default pause screen used by flixel. And pause screen can be changed – just play my Adventure Cavern to see it.

But game like Robot wants * (it was whole series) is certainly possible.

OK. And what if I want to make one room for all my games so people playing different my games (e.g. Fear Of Eights and Adventure Cavern) will be able to talk to each other?

Also I get 404 when I click Contact Us link.

BALLS… IN… SPACE

And spam is long gone and as I said, if I were mod, I’d with pleasure take out every crash course clone which I’d find. Anyway Stencyl =/= spam. Papercup and some other guys on largest Polish flash site, cda.pl are good at spamming w/out Stencyl.

Please quote me someone, cause he’ll probably won’t see it otherwise.
