Topic: Game Programming / Can I set a single color to be transparent?

If I do artwork in MS Paint or similar, I can’t set an alpha channel. However can I pick some random color like RGB 0, 0, 11 and tell Flash to treat this color as fully transparent? How do I do this?

Topic: Game Programming / Best way to animate

Say I have a game character that can walk, jump, attack etc. Should I put all the animations into a single animation and then just jump to the appropriate frame when I want to perform a particular action? Or is there a better way to do this?

Topic: Game Programming / Viral distribution, site-locking, and your rights as a developer

Can we please get a conclusion about a way to site lock in AS2 that will
-never stop someone playing the game on kong, regardless of temporary files, guest status etc but
-wont allow thieves to use the game by altering the url?

Topic: Tyrant: General Tyrant Discussion / [Petition] Make Nexus packs buyable with gold

Crusader – you’re a dev, so look at how much revenue you got for 2000 plays. Then take into account that Tyrant doesn’t have the exclusivity bonus, but they do have the API bonus, and that kongregate seems to have stepped up the number of full page ads (especially, it seems, on Tyrant) so they’ve probably got a bit more than the standard $4 per 1000 plays to split with the devs like they have with you.

In the worst case even if it is just 35% of $4 per 1000 plays (this is a legit figure that every dev I’ve asked has been able to confirm by looking at their revenue) that’s still $11,000 so far and it’s just going to keep going up.

Topic: Tyrant: General Tyrant Discussion / [Petition] Make Nexus packs buyable with gold

Devs get paid money just by people playing their game on kongregate. I reckon they’ve got approximately $20,000 from game plays alone and several zillion more from premium content. Then there is however much they get from the facebook side of things. Sure you need artists to illustrate the cards and then there is the networking side of things but other than that it’s not heaps expensive to develop this sort of game. The developer does not need to charge wb for nexus packs to continue to feed their family or even to give them incentive to continue developing more expansions.

Just look at how many other games on kongregate have continued to make sequels even though the entirety of their money is from game plays alone.

Signed.

Topic: Game Programming / AS2, looking around the game world

Say I have a game world which is larger than the screen. So when the game starts you can only see the left corner of the world and the rest is off screen. What is the best way to allow someone to look around the world? Do I have to move every single object in the world?

Topic: Game Programming / How can I draw parts of an image or load them into an array?

Say if I have this picture of a deck of cards
http://math.hws.edu/javanotes/c12/cards.png

And at any point on my screen I only want to draw one card, say the seven of diamonds. How can I do this?

Is there an easy way to load all 55 of these images into an array of images (even though I’ve only got 1 file)?

Topic: Kongregate / Kongregate development and copyright

Thanks for the link, but it’s not really the same as what I’m asking here, since Doom’s code was released to be free (yeah I’m simplifying here). This may not be the case with some old computer games that I want to make a “fan made” version of (but will look like the original and have basically the same rules). And a board game has no code, but the rules of the game are still an original thought of the game’s creator…

Topic: Kongregate / Kongregate development and copyright

Does anyone know if it is legal to make flash versions of existing games and upload them to kongregate? (Note that developers on kongregate are paid for ads that show up on their game page)

If it was a traditional game like chess, there would not be a problem. But what if it was a board game that was invented 20 years ago? Or what if it was an old computer game from the days of 4 color graphics etc?

Topic: Game Programming / Making multiplayer games

Say you want to make a game like castlewars, but you don’t have your own server. Would Kongregate provide you with a server that players could play over? Or at least, a server to match players, and then get one of their individual computers to act as a host for the game once it starts? Otherwise where could you get a free server to host your multiplayer lobby? Or is there some other way to make a multiplayer game (eg, connecting by IP addresses) that will run on kongregate?
Where would you learn how to make such a game?

This is what I was thinking, but I am not sure. Do you know this for sure / learn it somewhere / have a reference, or is it just your gut like mine?

I’m not trying to find a way to stop kongregate from paying me (but thanks for all those who suggested anyway), I want to know “what constitutes commercial gain?” I’ve seen discussions in other media where, for example, a film maker uses a song in his film that says “this song can’t be used for commercial gain”, people pay to see his film, but he only makes enough money from the film to recoup his costs, and he didn’t know whether that counts as commercial gain. It would be nice if things were a bit more explicit.

Thanks for the feedback but I still feel that my question hasn’t really been answered.

Flash student edition says it can’t be used for commercial gain. (On the side of the box that is, but I didn’t read anything about it in the eula). Does that mean that a game created with it can’t be uploaded to kongregate?
