Not really. Just randomly throw them (in whatever proportions you want) on any tile that’s a 1 after the tunnels/rooms have been generated.

Im not really sure how to do that… where do you declare if a tile is a 1 or a 0?

It would be better to have the 4D Vector ‘map’ use instances of some sort of tile class rather than ints if you wanted to make something more complex, but for as basic a combat system as you describe on page one, you could just use ints…..in what I did 0=wall, 1=space. It would be easy to add checks in the movement & display code for other numbers, 2=zombie, 3=treasure, 4=trap, etc.

yeah, a larger problem would be generating those things throughout the map.

Alright, got it working. Sorry about all that. Now I need to get a combat and enemy system in there and a way to win and i’ll have a basic roguelike that I can build a more complicated one out of.

Well, I suggest that you learn how to create a tile-based engine and work from there- people are correct about that you should learn AS3, but if you are more comfortable with AS2 go with it.

RTL, might want to read the rest of the posts, instead of just page 1 and 3.

can you upload your project so I can see what you did?

yeah, Im not putting it in anything. so there arent any settings to change it to.

That is the actual source folder, to make sure there are no more weird problems from pasting code in the forum. Any problems running it are definitely at your end.

EDIT: I mean, what were they? I don’t know of any other than the Vector >>>s, mebe you changed something that worked and broke it? :p

don’t thinks so, since I didnt change anything… maybe someone else can try to compile these with flash and see what they get.

Other than that, no ideas no. I compiled targeting FP11.0, but it shouldn’t make much difference, there’s nothing fancy in there…..
If you’re using Flash Pro, are ya sure you actually put the code in classes, not all together somewhere? (I’ve never used FlashPro, so not really sure what the pitfalls are)

lol yes im sure, main.as, pane.as, and brain.as . all pointed at a .fla file in a project. the .fla file has the screen res of what you have. It doesnt have anything in it though, should it?

and what do you mean were the other errors, errors I fixed? um… I think I fixed them……

		private var AreasGeneratedUpWay:Vector.<Vector.<Boolean>> = new Vector.<Vector.<Boolean>>;
		private var AreasGeneratedRightWay:Vector.<Vector.<Boolean>> = new Vector.<Vector.<Boolean>>;
		private var AreasGeneratedDownWay:Vector.<Vector.<Boolean>> = new Vector.<Vector.<Boolean>>;
		private var AreasGeneratedLeftWay:Vector.<Vector.<Boolean>> = new Vector.<Vector.<Boolean>>;

EDIT:Well that seems to have worked. Don’t know how it happened in the first place, I copied it straight from FlashDevelop.

RightNowArea in Pane.as has the same problem, it should be
public var RightNowArea:Vector.<Vector.<int>> = new Vector.<Vector.<int>>;

@ErlendHL, I happened to need to code (not right now, but I’d have done it in a couple of months anyways) something very similar to what OP was looking for (& claimed was the sticking point of his project), so I made&posted that as a basic prototype to demonstrate a way to randomly generate a tilebased cave/dungeon.

Yeah, now it has no errors, (there were a couple others but I fixed those in the same way) but it doesnt run, (just a white screen) any ideas?

You obviously need to learn as3. Programming is not taking a huge chunk of code, copying and pasting, and if the code is “right” or “complete”. If you knew as3 like you said, you would be able to debug it yourself.

it’s difficult to debug code that isen’t something you wrote… I wasn’t trying to program either. I was testing how it worked, and it apparently has bugs that causes the code not to run properly. which makes it difficult to figure out how it works. the swf example works great though, so I was wondering what the difference was.

Okay so I’ve been piecing together things like upgrades that upgrade variables and now I want to put that into a launching game where you launch something and maybe steer it a little and try to get it as far as you can. something similar to things like turtle toss, and burrito bison.

I meant in your original post.

You asked “how to create a roguelike” not “how to do tile-based movement.”

I wanted to give perspective.

1) Really? That’s what you’re hung up on?

wut :P

If you need any help on specific things in AS3 to make your code more cleaner and not in a glob, just ask; there is no need to use an older language version :)

are you familiar with as2?
