“That was good,” Desmond says, speaking for the first time in what seemed like ages.
“Hm, I agree.”
We were both laying on the ground, myself using his chest as a makeshift pillow. Half of the bear we had for ourselves was gone, and for good reason. We couldn’t help but consume such a large amount… We were starving, after all.
He begins to caress my face for a few moments, then slowly traces a finger down to my collarbone, sending chills down my spine. He smirks at such reaction, obviously enjoying himself.
“Don’t start what you can’t finish, baby,” I warn.
Desmond chuckles, completely disregarding my advice. In a second’s notice, he sits up while simultaneously helping me into the same position, then he straddles my legs just as quickly, not giving me time to react.
“What are you—”
But I’m not able to finish the sentence. He grabs the back of my neck and pulls me in for a deep kiss, that which lasted a good while before we pulled apart.

“You’re back quicker than I expected,” I say, noticing Desmond’s shadow approaching. He remained quiet, probably because of the countless thoughts running through his mind all at once.
“I’m not sure how much longer Hephirix will be, but we ought to wait for him.”
He nods in reply, sitting down next to me.
I didn’t like the fact that he wasn’t speaking much; I wasn’t able to read him as well. Maybe he would cheer up sooner rather than later, but for now, we would continue to sit in silence and eat.

Desmond is staring at me as I’m slicing up the meat. I avoid eye contact and pretend not to notice, but he’s persistent, and he won’t turn away.
“What is it?” I ask, feeling a little anxious.
“Those people over there must be starving. How about I take some of this over to them so they can have some food in their stomachs?”
“Look, she clearly stated she didn’t want my help, and I’m going to respect her wishes.”
“Yeah, but she never said that to me. Besides, you know she didn’t fully meant it.”
He kneels next to me and places my bloodied hands in his. “Please?”
“Alright, but hurry back. You owe me big for this, and I mean that.” The tone of my voice plus the expression on my face backed up the statement, hopefully getting the point across to him.
He gets up and grabs part of the bear that hasn’t been cut up, placing it over his shoulder.

Desmond arrives in the area where the survivors are resting, and swiftly places his delivery on the ground.
“I’ve brought you some food, there ought to be enough for everyone.”

After our brief embrace, we walk off in the opposite direction to avoid further contact with whatever her name was, but our path is cut short when a bear lands right in front of us. Desmond and I exchange glances, and he smiles.
“Looks like your friend keeps his promises,” he adds.
“Yeah, you can say that. Do you have a knife on you?”
“Of course.” His hands reaches into his back pocket and with it, a beautiful blades comes out. He notices me staring at it. “A gift from our late father before his death.”
“He had good taste.”
Desmond laughs a little, caught off by my reply.
“Alright, let’s dig into this big fella.”

“Did she just…?”
“Mhmm. I reckon she’s one of those split-personality type, and apparently her appearance goes with it. Regardless, I’m glad the ungrateful bitch—”
“Amie!” he interrupts, not the least bit pleased with my little comment. “You can’t just go around calling others such condescending names.”
Unbelievable… He was taking her side.
“But she started it!”
His look of disapproval made me regret such a whiny statement, and I sighed in response.
“Fine, I’m sorry for getting a bit worked up over nothing, you know I’m trying my hardest to manage my anger, especially when I’m around you. It’s not an easy mission for me, I’ll tell you that much.”
“I know,” he replies, pulling me in for a hug. It seemed as if we were enveloped in our own little paradise then, and I stood still to enjoy the moment for as long as possible.

As she speaks, my nails dig into the already-sensitive palms, the fresh blood staining my white dress in the process.
“Look, I understand you’re desperate, but don’t walk up to me demanding help while treating me like—”
Desmond places a hand on my shoulder to restrain me from finishing the sentence. “Amie, please, just look at them… They’ve lost everything.”
He was right, the others did look like they went through hell, no doubt about that. Maybe I could tell myself repeatedly that I’d be doing this for them, her excluded, and it wouldn’t be as hurtful to my pride.
“Fine. Hephirix went out hunting for…” I trailed off, my memory suddenly faltering from the pent up anger.
“Bears,” Desmond whispers.
“Right, he went out to hunt for bear meat. In the meantime, we could look for shelter and get everyone settled in.”

My hands ball into fists, almost drawing blood from either palm.
Keep your cool Amie, don’t lose it in front of him. If the little bitch wants to show up with an attitude, then let her.
“I’m Amintah, but you can call me Amie. This here is my partner, Desmond.”
He only waved. Such a timid man in front of strangers.
“I noticed the two of you had a little… unfriendly exchange back there. Where are his manners?”
That last bit was accentuated as we made eye contact, but nothing too extreme as to alert Desmond.
“And you are?” I continue, a fake smile plastered on my face.

‘’Well, yeah, technically you can classify him as human, although I wouldn’t bring it up around him. Sometimes you have to be careful with certain topics, if you catch my drift.‘’
I was glad Hephirix was being so understanding of the situation, given his mental state and all.
’’Shall we get something to eat? I’m starving.’’

“Hey, uh… Your girl over there is leaving, are you sure you don’t want to go after her? She doesn’t look too happy and—”
I notice the look of indifference on his face.
“Never mind, back on topic. Desmond’s a shifter, or at least he used to be. He told me about a traumatic experience he had a long time ago that left him unable to use his main abilities. He can still practice basic healing, and manipulate water to an extent, but that’s about it. Something about that incident made him the person he is today, that much I can tell by looking into his eyes.”

“You got it all wrong. I’m not sacrificing anything, I’m intentionally giving it up. Look, the chemistry we had between us when we first met was unlike anything I’ve experienced before, and I mean that in a good way. He makes me feel different because he is different, and I want to do everything in my power to make him happy. I’m not sure when exactly I’ll tell him about my past and where I come from, but it’s way to soon to do it now, and I don’t want to jeopardize our relationship.”
I paused, and looked at Hephirix with pleading eyes.
“You’ll just have to trust me on this one.”

“Well you know, I’ve had better days,” he replies. Desmond had grown rather uncomfortable with Hephirix’s presence, simply because of his weird nature, to say the least. All of this was very obvious, yet no one bothered to bring it up to avoid further awkwardness.
“Desmond, could you give us a minute, please?”
He nods his head and walks away with what I could have sworn was relief.
“So, as you can tell, there’s been a new addition to the group. Anyway, initially I wanted to use Desmond as one of my recruits for whatever task I needed, you know, to achieve our big plan, but then my feelings got in the way. The more we talked, the more I started to like him, and so on. I’ve yet to reveal my true self to him, so I went on with a side story that I wanted to help those affected by the catastrophe by going on a mission to fight anyone who would bring harm to the victims. Long story short, I’m happy with him, and I intend to keep it that way at any cost, so for now our plan has to be called off.”

[Amie doesn’t want to tell Desmond just yet of her true form, so Hephirix can play around with that, maybe threaten her or whatnot.]

“Uh, yeah, I’m fine,” he replies, not daring to make eye contact.
“His name is Desmond. Des…mond. Come on, that can’t be too hard for you to remember, not unless your head is full of useless thoughts.”
Easy girl… You don’t want to piss him off, not while Desmond is around anyway.
“Alright, so maybe not useless thoughts per se, but if you could make room for just one more name that would be great!”
Way to screw up, now he’ll more than likely go ballistic.
We were suddenly surrounded by silence, with no one really sure of what to say. Judging by his expression, he wasn’t the least bit amused at how I had insulted him. I didn’t mean for it to come out as harsh as it did, but I guess I cared a lot about Desmond, even when it was to defend him against something as simple as being called ‘other person’.

“Hephirix dear, it’s been a while!”
We hugged, awkwardly, and time almost ceased for those few moments. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to introduce my friend, as he and I were, well, more than friends now.
“I want you to meet Desmond, he and I have been together for quite some time.”
Desmond introduced himself, almost intimidated by the Hephirix’s presence. Anyone with a brain could tell that Hephirix wasn’t happy with my new relationship status, but I wasn’t here to please him, nor anyone else.
“Don’t worry darling, he won’t bite,” I joke, winking at Desmond and grabbing his hand.

[My apologies for the absence, it’s been a few rough weeks and I had no motivation to write whatsoever.]

“Take care of him, Amie. He’s the only family I’ve got aside from my two youngins.”
“Don’t worry, I promise I’ll try my hardest to keep him alive for ya.”
The kids came running outside, each of them taking a turn hugging their uncle. This seemed to deepen the emotions everyone was feeling at the moment, aside from me of course. Although they had given me food and shelter, I was unrelated to them and therefore didn’t have that special bond relatives usually have with one another.
“Shall we go then?” I asked, placing a hand on Desmond’s shoulder. He stood there for a moment before turning around and walking off. What an awkward situation.
