Name: Scarlet Devinson

Gender: Female

Age: 20

Appearance: Scarlet is the typical short, slim female. Her body is well-toned due to multiple beauty pageant attendances throughout her younger years where she trained and learned about discipline and overall wellbeing. She has medium skin tone and jet-black hair which falls just above her shoulders. Scarlet used to have hazel eyes, but now they are a light, cloudy grey ever since she had the misfortune of becoming blind. Typically, Scarlet will be seen wearing jeans, black boots, and a dark-green turtleneck sweater.

Personality: To the public eye, Scarlet is just another trouble-maker bouncing back and forth between the streets and jail. Due to her problematic life, Scarlet has had all hopes and dreams for a brighter future beaten out of her. She doesn’t socialize well, and this obviously leads to trust issues with just about anyone who tries to get to know her a little bit better. She may be tough on the outside, but Scarlet is a rather fragile individual who often finds comfort when she’s in the presence of animals, or “little buddies”, as she usually calls them. Her carefree attitude has nearly gotten her killed multiple times, and even though she doesn’t know it, strangers have saved her life during numerous escalating situations.

Skills: Scarlet is better than most at navigating almost any terrain since she’s had to rely on her remaining senses to get around. Her hearing is near perfect as she usually picks up on sounds when others wouldn’t be able to. She knows basic self-defense and is a rather good runner, both sprinting and long-distance.

Biography: Scarlet comes from a small family in the Seattle area. Her parents relocated to Vancouver, BC when she was just eight years old after her father accepted a well-paying job on the other side of the border. Being an only child, she was somewhat spoiled by her family and received little to no supervision in her youth due to her parents’ trust of her. Scarlet played the “perfect daughter” charade at home or whenever she was in the presence of family, and although she rarely got in trouble, she was not compatible with her well-mannered counterpart. She was much smarter then she led others to believe, and her street smarts were much higher than that of the typical rich kid.

At the ripe age of sixteen, Scarlet went blind. The accident at the chemical plant which permanently deprived her of her sight hunts her to this very day. It was a weekend evening when her then boyfriend, Lucas, snuck her into the compound to simply kill some time. They were walking around when the overnight security guard, armed with what looked like a glock nonetheless, spotted them and immediately commanded them to stop. They were caught off guard and took off running in the opposite direction. The wild-goose chase didn’t last long, unfortunately. Being naturally faster gave Lucas the advantage, while Scarlet was slowly falling behind. Amidst the chaos, she tripped on a loose wire and managed to knock down a few boxes stashed away in the corner. Neatly-stacked canisters were housed within those boxes, and one of them, upon hitting the floor, managed to split open and release some liquid substance which would immediately start releasing fumes. The moment the fumes made contact with Scarlet’s eyes she started screaming. She’d never in her life felt such terrible pain until that point, and she wasn’t even aware of the security guard picking her up and dragging her outside as he called for back-up.

Fast-forward to the hospital where she lies in bed unable to see. Her parents are notified of the incident and they speed off upon hearing the terrible news. Due to the fact that it was raining, and hard to see at it is, her parents had to swerve to avoid hitting a dog and instead, they had a head-on collision with another vehicle. All passengers in both vehicles died upon impact, unfortunately, and the news didn’t sit well when it eventually reached Scarlet. From that moment on, her life took a turn for the worse. She would bounce back and forth from jail and a few local agencies which looked after children. When she was 18, Scarlet didn’t bother returning to her temporary home. She instead found shelter within her high school gymnasium locker room where she would bathe and keep her very few belongings stashed away. It was easy to sneak in as some of the windows were rarely ever locked.

These days, Scarlet has been trying to keep out of trouble and has just recently started thinking about moving far away to try to start a new life altogether.

“So, we must fight this opponent,” I whisper to myself as I walk around the arena watching these fine individuals do their part to take Jericho down. It was like being front-row in a show, except this show was not rehearsed and you could end up badly injured…or worse. I sigh. “Better get to it then.”

I walk closer to Jericho, keeping my fellow teammates in my peripherals to avoid getting hit by one of them accidentally. After letting out a quick breath, I grab my knife and cut a wound in my arm big enough to be able to draw just the right amount of blood to do some damage. The pain is something I’ve gotten used to over time, so it didn’t really bother me that much. I waste no time in maneuvering the blood over to Jericho’s immediate surrounding and I watch as it disappears through the tiniest cracks in his armor. A quick flick of my wrist, now stained crimson, hardens the blood into a dagger-like shape and pierces through whatever is housed within the armor.

This better go in our favor, for my own sake.

“—hey!” I follow Jaq (as if I had a choice) and Nikeas to the cube-shaped thing that had called out our names a long with that of a few others. “There are some interesting characters joining us,” I say, looking around. “I’m going to take a wild guess and assume our little party will have to be postponed until much later. That’s too bad, really, I was looking forward to it.”

“Yes, as a matter of fact, we are”, I reply to the man before taking a few steps forward. My lucky day, apparently. “Here you go,” I say to the one behind the desk. “Make sure everything’s flawless.” A quick glance and a nod directed at me moments later signifies my freedom.

“Well, nice talkin’ to—”

I stop as I’m interrupted by someone else going on about my appearance. Most of the blabber he so enthusiastically communicates with us doesn’t register in my head until he says a certain word.

“I’m Leia, and you’re very straightforward. I don’t have any oppositions to your request, after all, what is life if not the pursuit of various pleasures? It’s up to him now whether this little party gets going or not.”

Great. This man is starting to ask questions and I don’t even have an answer for him. Why can’t anyone mind their own business anymore?

“We’ll, it’s complicated.”

I pause and stare at him to determine whether he would get the idea.

No, of course not.

“Alright then. From what I generally know, when an angel does something that’s usually frowned upon up there”—I point straight up with a finger—“they get the boot and end up here. I’ve no idea what I did, but I’m sure it doesn’t concern you.”

I reach down to retrieve my application off of the floor.

“Anymore questions?”

Right now I was coming off as a decisively rude individual, but I didn’t care. I thanked him for not letting me fall—or killing me right on the spot for that matter—so I didn’t owe him any favors. Whether he was satisfied or not with my response was definitely not my concern.

The attention was off of me now. Good. I take a step to the right to catch a glance of the line and those that were in front of me and well…there was still a long way to go. With a sigh, I begin to straighten myself out when I notice someone a few spots in front of me. His face caught my attention as we had the same complexion and nearly identical eyes. He must have sensed my gaze upon him because he turned to make eye contact and that’s when it happened.

The first wave was slow, the flash of memories with his face in every single one of them penetrated my mind with such intensity, it made my knees weak. The headache that accompanied it was rather brutal as I clenched both fists instinctively in an attempt to cope with the pain. The second wave hits and this time it’s much worse. I reach for whoever is behind me to avoid falling on them. A scream wants to escape my throat but I bite my lip and curse the heavens for putting me through this. That, apparently, does the trick. The sensation is suddenly gone, and I’m left shaking with the sound of my shallow breathing ringing loudly in my ears. My mind tries to comprehend what just happened, but I force that out for now.

“Please, excuse me for my actions,” I say to the man as I look up at him and pull away. My eyes were unapologetic, but I didn’t care. “That was uncalled for.”

Leia

I’m casually standing in line like everyone else in this forsaken place. My weight shifts to one leg as I proceed to run a hand around my neck and over my shoulder to distract me from the agony of pure and complete boredom. I slowly fade back into a state of obliviousness and an unknown amount of time passes before I’m brought back to reality by a sudden tug at my wing. My defenses jolt awake as I turn to confront the stranger who had dared touch me. A short, slimy creature was struggling to his feet before standing frozen in place. My stare must have burnt a hole through his tiny brain as he started to back away slowly.

“You disgusting sap!” My voice was louder than I’d intended, but I didn’t pay any mind to it nor did I care to deescalate the situation. I grow more aggravated as I spot some gooey substance dripping from the tip of my wing. My muscles flex while I try to practice as much restraint as possible in order to not kill this thing.

“You have exactly 3 seconds to get out of my sight or I will kill you right now in this very spot!”

Visibly shaking now, he hurries off from his place in line to find shelter amongst the many lovely individuals here today. Lovely being sarcastic in nature, of course. Some of these “lovelies” remain staring at me, but I ignore them as I would a stain on the ground. All I wanted to do now was take care of business and get cleaned up; any attempts at my life could be handled at a later time.

[Excuse any mistakes; I’ve only my phone at my disposal.]

Eyyy, you’re back. How’s things been?

Well, I got a good job, got my own place, started graduate school, got engaged, and we have a hedgehog named Spartacus. Life’s moving along.

Spartacus is probably the best thing to name a hedgehog. Either that or Sonic.

Sonic isn’t original, though. I’m part of a hedgie group and half of them are named Sonic. Here’s my Spartacus though:

I hear my name being mentioned. I look over to where the group is standing and Ronan appears to be making introductions. That’s not surprising though as he seems to be the type of person who will go the extra mile in any situation. After a brief internal debate on whether I should join them or not, I decide to finally get up and make my way over to them. As I’m walking, I notice some blonde-haired girl who clearly looked distressed. Her face reminds me of someone, and that’s when it clicks in my head.

“Ronan!” I grab him by the shoulder to turn him around and face me without caring too much about whom I’d just interrupted. “I need to go find the rest of the girls from the squad. I don’t know what you have planned but I haven’t seen Chelsea at all today and I’m worried. She’s my co-captain, so I kind of owe it to her to at least make an attempt to locate her.”

The gruesome sight before me was something I’d only seen in movies before, not face to face. Given the bad lunch I had that only served to make me nauseated for hours on end, it is only a matter of moments before I have to run to the nearest trash bin to puke my guts out. Starting with Ronan, I push everyone aside who happens to be in my way as I race against time, one race that I was sure I was going to lose.

“Move!” I yell to some kids walking by. Instead of doing what I ordered, they look at me with somewhat of a shocked expression and as a result, I elbow the older-looking one to clear my path. Why are people so stupid sometimes? Doesn’t matter, the brief frustration is relieved as I make it to the lined bin just in time.

After I end up with an empty stomach, I put a hand on the wall to lean against it and use my free hand to wipe the sweat off my face. I was breathing heavily, but as time passed, I was able to calm myself. In one smooth motion, I turn with my back against the wall and slide down until I’m seating and able to put my head on my knees to have a moment to myself. It seemed like this day was only getting worse for me.

“Wait, but what about…?” I have no time to finish the question since I’m rushing after Ronan right as he takes off. I don’t know exactly why I was following him, but I’d rather not face this mess alone. “So,” I add as I catch up with him, “are you part of the science club or something? I don’t mean to stereotype, but you don’t look like the type who plays sports. I bet you’re pretty good at chess too. I tried learning some years ago but it just didn’t stick, so I’ve settled for checkers.”

For some reason, I look down to check my watch and realize it was getting late. Hopefully we’ll be able to make it back home before nightfall, although the fog hasn’t lifted so I doubt that we’ll be allowed to go unless we escape through a window or something. “Speaking of which, who exactly are we going after, and why? Don’t we have enough on our plate right now to worry about?”

“My family…right.”

The dreaded feeling came back. It was the inability to even leave a voice message on her phone that had me worried the most. I could only think of the worst case scenario right now, and that was an image of everybody lying dead on the floor, to include or dog, Maxine. Hell, I even felt bad for Winston the butler. He was a nice old man, after all; always on top of his game to deliver service with a smile. He was also easier to talk to than any of my parents because his approach to a problem was to help rather than to judge.

“Yes, I think they’ll be alright.” I fake a smile, not really meaning my words. Ronan was worried enough for the both of us, and I didn’t want to make the situation any worse. “Just be optimistic. I know it’s hard at the moment, but it helps to look on the bright side.”

As we walk into the auditorium, we stumble upon some chaos going on up in the front.

“Well..I don’t think this meeting is going as planned, wouldn’t you say?”

“I’m Angeline,” I reply as I inspect my knees for damage. Aside from a few scratches against the reddened patch of skin, I was fine. I look up at the boy and remember he was the one who had pulled me away from the crowd just not too long ago. Taking a closer look at him this time around, I realize he wasn’t that bad looking after all.

“So, have you heard anything new as to what’s going on?” I ask, motioning for him to follow me to the auditorium. I’m glad I had someone to talk to for now.

Well that took them long enough.

I turn right on my heel and head towards the auditorium, wondering if the teachers or any of the administration had an answer for us. I was probably being too hopeful though, they were more than likely seeking to keep count of the student body and keep us all in one room. If you ask me, that just seems so much worse. We’d be like sitting ducks in there.

As I cross the hall, I notice the principal walking followed by a couple of kids. One of them looked particularly familiar to me, but I couldn’t quite remember where I’d seen him outside of school. Oh well, the schmuck probably lives around the area, no need to concern myself with him at the moment.

[Sorry, just started working and I’ve barely had time to do anything.]

Angeline

“Hey!”

The boy just looks at me with a dumb face and quickly utters an apology, not even bothering to help me with the books that laid strewn on the floor. What was his problem? Without saying another word, he takes off in the same direction he was originally heading. I sigh in response, bending down to pick up my books when my phone just so happens to fall out of my pocket. But of course! Why didn’t I think of that before?

I waste no time and frantically dial my mother’s number, hoping for a quick response. Instead of hearing the usual ring though, I get nothing but silence. “Oh come on!” I look at my phone just to make sure I had dialed properly, and hang up before trying again.

Nothing.

Frustrated by this point, I hang up and head to the main lounge. If I was going to be here a while, I might as well make the most of it.

Hmm…it doesn’t look like we’re getting out of here any time soon. I should go find—ugh, no, she’s out today with the flu. Why does my most reliable friend have to be out today? I can’t really count on anyone else here because they all basically have a maturity level of 0. And the teachers, they just try to boss you around as if you were some stupid 5-year-old.

“Hey, watch it!” I suddenly yell at some kid who nearly knocks me over as he runs past me. Luckily, I have great balance and I’m able to recover before face-planting the floor. Even though I wanted to pursue the stranger to confront him, he vanishes into a pool of students heading into one of the stairways. Good riddance; he wasn’t worth the trouble anyway.

I continue walking along the hall, this time without the intrusive thoughts dancing in my mind like some unwelcomed guest at a house party. As I turn the corner, I don’t have time to react to someone also walking in my path and we end up colliding, that which results in me dropping my books and nearly falling this time.
