I hear my name being mentioned. I look over to where the group is standing and Ronan appears to be making introductions. That’s not surprising though as he seems to be the type of person who will go the extra mile in any situation. After a brief internal debate on whether I should join them or not, I decide to finally get up and make my way over to them. As I’m walking, I notice some blonde-haired girl who clearly looked distressed. Her face reminds me of someone, and that’s when it clicks in my head.

“Ronan!” I grab him by the shoulder to turn him around and face me without caring too much about whom I’d just interrupted. “I need to go find the rest of the girls from the squad. I don’t know what you have planned but I haven’t seen Chelsea at all today and I’m worried. She’s my co-captain, so I kind of owe it to her to at least make an attempt to locate her.”

The gruesome sight before me was something I’d only seen in movies before, not face to face. Given the bad lunch I had that only served to make me nauseated for hours on end, it is only a matter of moments before I have to run to the nearest trash bin to puke my guts out. Starting with Ronan, I push everyone aside who happens to be in my way as I race against time, one race that I was sure I was going to lose.

“Move!” I yell to some kids walking by. Instead of doing what I ordered, they look at me with somewhat of a shocked expression and as a result, I elbow the older-looking one to clear my path. Why are people so stupid sometimes? Doesn’t matter, the brief frustration is relieved as I make it to the lined bin just in time.

After I end up with an empty stomach, I put a hand on the wall to lean against it and use my free hand to wipe the sweat off my face. I was breathing heavily, but as time passed, I was able to calm myself. In one smooth motion, I turn with my back against the wall and slide down until I’m seating and able to put my head on my knees to have a moment to myself. It seemed like this day was only getting worse for me.

“Wait, but what about…?” I have no time to finish the question since I’m rushing after Ronan right as he takes off. I don’t know exactly why I was following him, but I’d rather not face this mess alone. “So,” I add as I catch up with him, “are you part of the science club or something? I don’t mean to stereotype, but you don’t look like the type who plays sports. I bet you’re pretty good at chess too. I tried learning some years ago but it just didn’t stick, so I’ve settled for checkers.”

For some reason, I look down to check my watch and realize it was getting late. Hopefully we’ll be able to make it back home before nightfall, although the fog hasn’t lifted so I doubt that we’ll be allowed to go unless we escape through a window or something. “Speaking of which, who exactly are we going after, and why? Don’t we have enough on our plate right now to worry about?”

“My family…right.”

The dreaded feeling came back. It was the inability to even leave a voice message on her phone that had me worried the most. I could only think of the worst case scenario right now, and that was an image of everybody lying dead on the floor, to include or dog, Maxine. Hell, I even felt bad for Winston the butler. He was a nice old man, after all; always on top of his game to deliver service with a smile. He was also easier to talk to than any of my parents because his approach to a problem was to help rather than to judge.

“Yes, I think they’ll be alright.” I fake a smile, not really meaning my words. Ronan was worried enough for the both of us, and I didn’t want to make the situation any worse. “Just be optimistic. I know it’s hard at the moment, but it helps to look on the bright side.”

As we walk into the auditorium, we stumble upon some chaos going on up in the front.

“Well..I don’t think this meeting is going as planned, wouldn’t you say?”

“I’m Angeline,” I reply as I inspect my knees for damage. Aside from a few scratches against the reddened patch of skin, I was fine. I look up at the boy and remember he was the one who had pulled me away from the crowd just not too long ago. Taking a closer look at him this time around, I realize he wasn’t that bad looking after all.

“So, have you heard anything new as to what’s going on?” I ask, motioning for him to follow me to the auditorium. I’m glad I had someone to talk to for now.

Well that took them long enough.

I turn right on my heel and head towards the auditorium, wondering if the teachers or any of the administration had an answer for us. I was probably being too hopeful though, they were more than likely seeking to keep count of the student body and keep us all in one room. If you ask me, that just seems so much worse. We’d be like sitting ducks in there.

As I cross the hall, I notice the principal walking followed by a couple of kids. One of them looked particularly familiar to me, but I couldn’t quite remember where I’d seen him outside of school. Oh well, the schmuck probably lives around the area, no need to concern myself with him at the moment.

[Sorry, just started working and I’ve barely had time to do anything.]

Angeline

“Hey!”

The boy just looks at me with a dumb face and quickly utters an apology, not even bothering to help me with the books that laid strewn on the floor. What was his problem? Without saying another word, he takes off in the same direction he was originally heading. I sigh in response, bending down to pick up my books when my phone just so happens to fall out of my pocket. But of course! Why didn’t I think of that before?

I waste no time and frantically dial my mother’s number, hoping for a quick response. Instead of hearing the usual ring though, I get nothing but silence. “Oh come on!” I look at my phone just to make sure I had dialed properly, and hang up before trying again.

Nothing.

Frustrated by this point, I hang up and head to the main lounge. If I was going to be here a while, I might as well make the most of it.

Hmm…it doesn’t look like we’re getting out of here any time soon. I should go find—ugh, no, she’s out today with the flu. Why does my most reliable friend have to be out today? I can’t really count on anyone else here because they all basically have a maturity level of 0. And the teachers, they just try to boss you around as if you were some stupid 5-year-old.

“Hey, watch it!” I suddenly yell at some kid who nearly knocks me over as he runs past me. Luckily, I have great balance and I’m able to recover before face-planting the floor. Even though I wanted to pursue the stranger to confront him, he vanishes into a pool of students heading into one of the stairways. Good riddance; he wasn’t worth the trouble anyway.

I continue walking along the hall, this time without the intrusive thoughts dancing in my mind like some unwelcomed guest at a house party. As I turn the corner, I don’t have time to react to someone also walking in my path and we end up colliding, that which results in me dropping my books and nearly falling this time.

It was all so surreal. The expressions of terror on the faces of my fellow students, their frightened voices filling the hall, drowning out my own thoughts. I wanted to turn back the clock, just go back five minutes in time where I was eagerly waiting for the bell to go off as I fantasized about my chemistry teacher sitting behind his desk not too far from me. He was just as anxious to leave, I could tell by the way he kept looking at his watch. God he was hot; I would give anything to be back there…

Before my mind has the chance to wander any further, I feel a tug on my shoulder. Their grip is not hard, just firm enough for me to get the hint. I follow the kid away from the big crowd until we have some breathing room. He looked young, probably my age give or take a year. His question was one I had to think about for a few moments.

“I’m not really sure,” I shout back, looking around to see whether anyone had any idea of what exactly was going on, but they all looked just as confused as the rest of us. “Shouldn’t the school make some form of announcement or something? I mean, this is not really normal.”

Name: Angeline Pearson

Age: 16

Sex: Female

Appearance: Not too tall, stands about 5’3. Her body size is proportional to her height given the fact that she’s an athlete and is in good shape. Her dark-brown hair is cut short—just above her shoulders, and her big, pale blue eyes add a childish look to her face.

Personality: Angeline is mature for her age, she doesn’t play games but she will at times make some stupid decisions. She’s not exactly the class bully, but she’s not one who will allow someone to walk all over her without repercussions. She tries to help out as much as she can at animal shelters, and that keeps her in check with reality.

About: As the newly-appointed head of the cheerleading squad (she used to be the co-captain until the captain suffered some injuries), Angie has added more responsibilities to her plate and has been feeling more stressed out than ever before. Her grades haven’t faltered, strangely enough, but she does lash out at people more often than not and lately, her patience has gotten the best of her. Angeline also went through a rough break-up with her boyfriend of a year and a half.

“Thank you again,” I say to Andrew as I finish eating the piece he had given me. I suppose this would stave off my hunger for a full three or four minutes. “Well, now that we’ve taken care of that, let’s—”

I stop, suddenly unable to move at the sight of a yellow crocodile emerging from within the trees. After what seems like an eternity, I find some courage to finally react.

“Andrew, get behind me,” I say, not really an order as I had grabbed his arm and pulled him out of the line of sight of the strange creature. Strange was an understatement, really. This crocodile was oddly-colored, and its eyes were far from anything I’d assume to be normal. “Austin, what should we do?” I ask with a shaky voice, unsure of how to handle the situation. Tarazed and Matt were not far away from us, and for some reason I feared for their lives as well.

I’m not taking sides, but the rules clearly state, and I quote:

Sidenote: All times posted will be in Eastern time (8:00pm ET). It is your responsibility to adjust this based on your time zone."

Anyway, I’m off to figure out what I’m going to draw.

Anna. No one has called me that since…Tom. From the first day we met, he preferred the shorter version of my name. Every day after that, it was “Anna let’s hang out”, or “Hey Anna, do you need help with your homework?” The day I heard him say my full name was when he first introduced me to his family, and then shortly after that, on our wedding day when the priest had Tom repeat the wedding vow after him. But that’s it. I mean, he wouldn’t even do it during one of our more serious arguments. That one evening where we fought over his gambling addiction, and things nearly got out of hand. I remember standing in front of the bed and he by the window, each of us alternating back and forth as we tried to outshout the other. He eventually ended it by taking long, quick strides over to me. I wasn’t scared of him, but I did tense up when he firmly planted his hands on my shoulders. The fierce look didn’t leave his eyes as he pushed me onto the bed. Instantly, we both forgot about our fight and proceeded
to—

“Anna.”

There it was again.

I snap out of it and look down at the candy bar that Andrew was offering me. I manage to give him a quick “thanks” as he hands it to me and I take a bite out of it, glad to have something to distract me from the memory still lingering in my mind.

“Austin… yes, how could I forget you?” I smile and look at Andrew, hoping I didn’t sound too insincere.

“I’m assuming you’re the friend we’re looking for. Andrew here also told me about Captain Sherman—no wait…” I pause to try to remember the name. “Sherwood, Captain Sherwood. Do you know him by any chance? Andrew’s father entrusted him with his son but I don’t know how many of us are here, or if the rest of them even made it at all…”

The ship had disappeared all of a sudden, so who knew how many of us managed to get off without a scratch. The expression on my face was now one of fear and dread, and even though I didn’t mean to scare Andrew, I couldn’t help but think about the worst case scenario.

I follow Andrew’s gaze, even though I already knew who he was referring to. Maybe something happened between him and one of the two men, and this was his way of avoiding it altogether. “Tell you what”, I say in a low tone, facing Andrew again so that my back remains to Tarazed and Faust, “Why don’t we go see where your friend is and hopefully, if we get lucky, come across Captain Sherwood, or… well, you know who I’m referring to.”

I flash him a reassuring smile and motion for him to follow me. Before I’m questioned, I let the other two know I was going in search of someone, although I didn’t disclose any names just to make it easier on the boy.

“So, I couldn’t help but notice you only mentioned your dad allowing you to come on this trip. Was your mom okay with it too?”

I knew I was probing too deep into his personal life now, but I figured the question would come up sooner or later.
