Topic: Game Programming / AddChild... RemoveChild... Addchild... can't get object to front?

When you traced missionDisplay.getChildAt(0); and got [object Shape] that is telling you there definitely is a shape object. I am going to assume it is the big white square, since that makes sense.

missionDisplay is getting a Shape object from somewhere! I dont have experience with MovieClips, but do know you can change them outside of code, so it may not be explicitly written, but its there.
As you said, missionDisplay is not a child of it self. It is also not a shape object.

Replacing the while loop with removing the two objects excplitly works because it’s only removing 2 things, not 3, and leaving the white shape alone. missionDisplay is still showing, there’s just nothing it it besides it’s children, which show.
memberBox has the same issue I’m guessing, whatever default background you gave it (not through code) is a shape object, which you’re removing and never replacing. Solution is like shakenNbake said, to loop while numchildren > 1 & remove at position 1, thus leaving the background shape.

What is the issue with the while statement? It removes all the children from missionDisplay. If you then attempt to add everything back & get different index values, the issue is that you aren’t correctly adding something back in (probably that Shape object). Code is pretty confusing so I’m not sure which objects are supposed to be children of what, or even what each object is in the picture.

missionStart uses an already created missionDisplay, then it adds stuff to it. Was missionDisplay already created & given children somewhere else perhaps a big white square Shape object?

Topic: Game Programming / GiTD Rule Change Voting! Voting ends 7/7/13 6PM GMT

G because it is the least restrictive. See no reason why the rules have to change at all. I like the idea of requiring some type of feedback, even if it’s ’hey cool game i liked that the pigs had lazers", but beyond that anyone should be free to vote for whoever they want. Even if I recruit a bunch of friends to make kong accounts for the sole purpose of playing & voting, as long as they actually play the games they should be free to vote.

As far as I know, it should/might. Give it a go and see if your computer explodes.

Even if it lets you do that, it won’t do what you think and recursively import things. So for example, something in the flash.display package won’t get imported.

For that you’d need

import -r flash.*;

And was 800×600 big enough to play the games? :p My resolution is at 1366×768, highest laptop can handle. actual web page view area is just over 600 big I guess, games shouldn’t be 600px tall :(

My reviews: sorry if yours seems negative, take it for granted that I enjoyed your game unless I say otherwise. If there was a standout fun part I;ll try to mention it. I also didn’t read any other reviews before playing games, so you’ve probably heard all this before.

Zoib: Exploration: Signs of Life
Mouse sensitivity was really high, even when turned on the lowest setting on my mouse.
Didn’t really like the movement, felt like I had no control. Especially jumping / walking on ledges.. Since the game is basically just moving around, quit after about 5 signs.

Saw the title and thought of Jeff Inlo’s books, was a bit disappointed :( not your fault though haha. Enemies are much too hard. If I’m trapped in a never ending dungeon full of bad guys, I need to be able to kill them 1v1 without taking any damage, which I found incredibly hard to do. Decided to skip shooting and just ran around instead, got much farther :) Got kind of annoyed when I went to pick up an item, standing on it did nothing, pressing Q (instinct from playing another game) did not do what I thought it would! Room reveal was pretty cool!

deviever: Morty’s Lost Catacombs
Decided to download it after watching the embedded youtube video. Found the text very hard to read but played for much longer than I thought I would. Biggest complaints about gameplay are: too easy for you to walk into the water/lava, wish I could hold more than 1 bullet at a time, and there was no point to playing? Did enjoy that the monsters explode when they get too big. SHooting water into a water lake was like using a grenade instead of a gun. Things you buy from shop also had no apparent use? Maybe I just got the wrong one. Keeping them when you die would be nice, way too easy to die from a random giant blob, keeping /some/ of your progress would make it much more playable. Would also like <V^> support. The game uses 7 buttons, why limit me to only using 4 fingers? would reduce misfires if I had designated moving fingers & shooting fingers. Continue development and make a flash version please :)

Feffers: Dungeon Seekers
Bonus points for allowing me to create a green powerranger, but another game with no point. Fighting requires no skill and is way too easy (Fought three at one time no problem, and if I had a problem I could go 100px to the next diablo fountain).

Plasmatic429: Don’t Ask
Would have been less frustrating if fuel recharge bug was fixed. Gun seemed pointless, after shooting the smallest tiniest alien with atleast 15 shots and it still not dieing, I stopped using it and just flew around through them. Was originally expecting walls to harm you if you touch them, would have made it a much more challenging sp[ace game.

Shalmezad: .explore
Good misuse of the theme (if you’re exploring, you’re losing). Lose a point for making me start the game by performing an action never used again in game (pet peeve of mine, makes no sense at all). Kongregate highscores give it a little replay value, but that quickly goes away when your first game (12) is the highest you get after 10 replays :grumble: If you plan on continueing it, add R to restart for when a bad level ruins your chances, and consider making it score based ( score decreases more time you spend on each level, at 0 can still finish for no points, next level time is reset)?

imp2 – Theifer O’Greedy
Would have been fun except the controls killed it. Having the camera bob up everytime you jump is irritating. Would prefer normal jumping to the buzzlightyear jumps. And side to side is sloppy. So yeah not a big fan of the controls, which is sshame because I quit at the first red level. Wanted to see how the changeup would effect the other llevels but much too frustrating to play with the controls.

Elyzius – The Proper Care and Feeding of Your Demons
Fun game mechanic. Not sure about the demon stuff, seeing a ton of combos is cool, because usually that is good… then you realize they’re all useless and it’s like :/ Also matches were too esay, didn’t lose when I didn’t know the rules, then once I did I was winning before they could even summon them

gobologna – Cat Burglar
Instructions should be in game not just on the kong chat, took me awhile to learn to run/throw/not walk on stairs. Once I learned how though they were still no use. Beat the game by going afk & waiting for danger to go down, without using yarn/disguises.

Kewry – Hunting Sim
Rushing through all the battle makes all the combat play-by-play script useless, and the gmae into a 3 minute clickthrough. Not saying it would be that much more exciting if it was slower but yeah. Also starting a game in slot 3 erased the one I had in slot 1 :(

BadEgg – Klecter
Having the bad guys not damage you, in addition to them turning into orbs when shot, creates a strategy that defeats the purpose of the game. It would be nice if kong API was integrated to see if that actually is better than playing as intended (1760 for waiting till last second and killing them all?). Would be cool to see a longer tail mean more monsters/higher spawn to reward risk.

Russpuppy – Photo Collection
Pretty cool mechanic, but it would have been nice to know what qualifies as a good picture. I Only got $25 for a picture of a bear, snake, and three birds? That is like the entire forest!

How do you know he doesn’t mean concept art? Perhaps once the game is live, the boxes will be shinier and more colorful.

If you ask me, them are already some really shiny boxes right ’er.

I did in fact mean concept. “Concept art is a form of illustration where the main goal is to convey a visual representation of a design, idea, and/or mood for use in films, video games, animation, or comic books before it is put into the final product.” Since in the final product I will have three square buttons, and a rectangular main character. Placeholders don’t have anything to do the final product. (I’d have used my RandomGraphic class instead of ColorBox)

Topic: Kongregate / Activity feeds for everyone

What kind of stuff exactly shows up in this feed? For me 90% of it is just “We added x badges to y game!” Which is completely pointless ( it is pointless because this information is duplicated in the new badges page, and is more helpful there because ones you’ve already gotten are greyed out, on the feed you can’t distinguish between new and old messages).
This might be because I don’t have many friends/fans (and have no interest in that aspect really) so I guess that puts me in the minority :P but just curious.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is z-index?

Letting people delete games can make thinks go wonky/look broken. It introduces a bunch of missing pages, and people’s comment history looks strange because they’re talking about games that don’t exist! Also it is actually a good thing for developers, since if your account is stolen you know they can’t delete your games!

Z-index is the front -to-back ordering. Everything has an X and a Y coordinate already, Z-index takes care of the third dimension, depth.

Try changing
public var inventoryToSaveArray:Array = new Array()
to
private var inventoryToSaveArray:Array = new Array()

That will prevent it from being changed from outside of the class.

What function is
inventoryToSaveArray = []
within?

Wait, is it the array in main or the array in inventory that is being cleared? Your variable names keep confusing me x.X

As you said theres nothing in this function to remove things from the array. First I would check the scope of the variable, you can access it anywhere else in the file? As in inside of at least two different functions? If it is available within other functions, I would check to see if you have inventoryToSaveArray = new Array() or = [] anywhere, or possibly the code you’re using to remove items from the array isn’t working right and is removing them all. Without seeing the rest of your code I don’t know where your error is at, so try tracing before and after you add/remove anything to the array and make sure you’re getting the right result.

Do you have an instance of the inventory class somewhere in Main?
aka a variable where you said inventory = new Inventory() ?
static functions are called by Class.function(), other functions need to be called by object.function() where object is an instance of the class. If you don’t want the function to be static, you need an instance of inventory. Hopefully that makes sense!

Topic: Kongregate / Profile page redesign: now with a feed!

I don’t really like the new redesign at all. The whole top right section is random, why is the level so huge? Since when did level matter.. Similarly the 6 stats next to it seem to be big just to fill up space?
And I don’t like how only my last 6 games are shown :( I know I haven’t made any good games yet, but when I do I’ll want them to be easily seen, reducing the number for no reason is a big minus broski.
I wouldn’t have a problem with the feed if you guys gave us more control over it. I don’t want every badge I get to go there O_O Thats so spammy! Leaving it simply for shouts (plus the option to post to feed when you get a new badge, instead of default) wouldn’t be that bad… But as it is the feed really turns me off from this update, enough so that I made my profile private.
I’m sure all these points have been made before but I don’t really feel like reading through this thread!

tl;dr please go back to the old layout so I can make my profile public again
