Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Viking Raiders] Post your feedback here!

As I’m basically done with this game now, I think it’s a good time to give my feedback.

First, I’ll say that I like the theme and art style. I like tactical challenges and appreciate being able to choose my roster and resulting playstyle. The first chapter in particular is a lot of fun to figure out, and I liked going back to do the challenges. Unfortunately, there’s a lack of balance to my post though, because it’s easier to talk about what isn’t working.

The first problem is that it’s too grindy, and there aren’t enough levels/challenges. I’ve completed all three chapters, but now don’t care enough to do the Endurance Challenges (because I don’t yet have top-tier units like Vengeful Valkyrie). If all three chapters had Star Challenges (and the Runestar shop was out), there’d be a lot more there, and I’d appreciate it, but it wouldn’t actually solve the bigger problem.

The lack of opponent AI is a serious problem. It means they act in stupid, generally predictable ways (though their turn order makes a huge difference in their actions and that can’t always be predicted, so far as I know). The attempt to fix this problem, so that the game isn’t way too easy, was to make the enemy units increasingly overpowered. This is not a good solution. While there is some appreciable challenge there, sometimes it’s just dumb. The solutions to these challenges aren’t clever tactics and careful maneuvering, it’s usually just grind until you get the unit(s) you need. And that sucks, just, flat out. It’s not fun, and it’s not good design. And there are places where the map layout, with the overpowered units’ abilities, mean there’s actually no good way to do a section (without losing units/sacrificing sheep [for example, the Archer Only star challenge]). I would much rather have a clever AI and enemy units that are at most slightly overpowered compared to mine than a dumb AI and demigod opponents.

Another downside to that problem is that after the first chapter, viable strategies shrink considerably. After the first chapter, I never had use for melee units except Burly Farmers as meatshields and Suicide Sheep on occasion. It’s simply not practical to try to drag a bunch of melee units around, letting them take damage and risk losing them, when you can just use Farmers and replace them for 1 spirit when they die. This is even more true when you get Shield Maidens (and have to use them, because Burly Farmers just don’t cut it anymore). Good luck using any melee unit when Shield Maidens are the only non-selfharming unit that can tank the hits. (And those self harming units: Sure, you can use them, but unless you are willing to devote two of the unit slots to defense with a Burly Farmer and an Arrow Magnet, the Arrow Magnet will still be a fragile, iffy unit. And Blessed Drengurs are just silly, as they’ll almost certainly be stunned or frozen by ranged units the whole fight, so that +20 damage is not doing any good). If there even is a viable strategy for the (current) endgame content that doesn’t involve ranged units and Shield Maiden tanks, I’d be curious to see it.

As a final note, the lack of an undo button for misclicks adds to the frustration factor, though only outright spoils the whole game for me when it means I lose units as a result.

As for the Frost Thrasher, its glory attack, Taunt, has a range of 3 which is why it can hit so far.

Yeah, what I meant is that how does a troll wielding a club hit me from three squares away? I saw that it has a range of three, my issue is that there is apparently no way that it would be able to, except because reasons.

Possible bug like thing Navnlos Inlet one of the first maps, calls for a star victory by using only archers, . . . but no map drops archers regularly, so if you fail once, you don’t have enough archers to try again, nor can you get more.

You can get more archers by beating the extra areas in Vokser Fjord (level 2) or Wealdan Wald (level 3). I think Vokser Fjord is the better bet. It’s easier, but I also think it’s got a better chance to drop Archers. Wealdan Wald’s extra area drops slightly better units (though Archers do pop up there). These extra areas will always drop 2 (Vokser) and 4 (Wealdan) units, it’s just a matter of getting lucky enough to get Archers in those drops. I do agree though, that it’s ridiculous to have to do that over and over to do a star challenge, but it is possible, at least. Also, you won’t get the star bonus unless you use the unit named “Archer,” not just any ranged units.

I had that bug once too, HumphreyA.

Did Holy Purge not see much use during Beta? I am getting so many bugs with it on level 18. I had a bleeding Shield Maiden in range of an archer. Her movement was reduced by 2, but her shield boost ran up that turn, so she had two movement. I used Holy Purge to get rid of the bleeding and let her move 4 that turn (something that has worked before for me), but after being purged, she was exhausted (having attacked before that, but not moved at all yet). Next time I used purge on a Shield Maiden (still map 18), she was moved 3 squares, as if I had told her to, when I hadn’t even selected her yet. I’d only selected my Abbot so far that turn. I also lost her movement even though there were no debuffs affecting her movement. Even if I had accidently moved her those 3 squares (which I hadn’t), she would still have had 1 movement left, but she didn’t.

Also, Frost Thrasher’s range attack: 1. Doesn’t make any sense. (How is he hitting me from over there?) 2. Is not at all explained in their info. (There’s certainly no warning that it erratically pulls the target closer to the Thrasher.) 3. Doesn’t show up in their threat-range, so their range looks like it’s 2 squares shorter than it is.

Instead of targeting being based on unit’s silhouettes, base it on the square I’m pointing that. Then there won’t be any hassle selecting the unit you want even if it’s behind things, and no more thinking you’re clicking one guy when actually you’re clicking the weapon of the guy next to him.

There really needs to be an undo button that you can use before you end your turn. Watching your strategy fall to pieces because of a single misclick is just ridiculously frustrating.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Viking Raiders] Oh so many bugs...

You’ve taken this out of beta? There are so, so many bugs that mess with gameplay in a serious way. I hoped to find them listed here already, but the two on my mind at the moment are these (which are by no means the only game-play affecting bugs I’ve run into):

Grunts’ Hack ability sometimes uses 2 glory instead of one. Sometimes it’s unavailable when there’s glory left to use. Sometimes I can use their regular attack and Hack in the same turn, and sometimes I can’t.

Dreggs’ Bolster is very very erratic. It says it bolsters one hit, but some units don’t even get a chance to hit before it wears off (particularly the Dregg himself), and some units it never wears off of. They remained bolstered until they die or the mission ends (or another cast of bolster, which takes away the old casting and may have either of the above effects or its actual intended effect).

Yes. My graphic settings was on low before the update and has been set on low since the update. I don’t know where this new delay is coming from. I’m running Chrome 20.0 and my flash is up to date.

I’m finding the game runs a lot worse after this last update. Before I could expect 1~2 marks of lag-based over-charging on my shots. Now it’s running in the 5~8 range, with no consistency at all. Completely unable to control the power of my shot.

Decide if this is a CCG or a TCG. If this is a CCG, then there should be ways for new players to collect every card. People who like collecting that haven’t already been playing your game for months will now find it impossible to get every card. More importantly, there are extremely useful cards that are needed to make certain kinds of decks viable. If those stop being available, new players are at a permanent disadvantage.

After the update to the chat system, there’s been a minor bug for me. Everytime I click to look at someone’s profile, when I switch back my chat is scrolled up to the top of the chat log. I’m using Chrome 16.0.912.63.

If a player times-out in a brawl, their turns should be automatically played for them until they click to make it stop. Just a pop-up appears on their screen “You timed out and cards are being played at random: Resume play.” There is no reason to make everyone wait 30+ seconds every single round for someone who is not there.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Kongai] Kongai Criticism

Hypnotic Stare and Chi Reflect (and I presume any other reflective moves, if there are any I’m overlooking) reverse the affects of the skill used. If you attempt to heal but are hypnotized, you heal your enemy. Please try to explain how that doesn’t make sense. Why wouldn’t someone hypnotizing you make you heal them instead of yourself? Hypnotic Stare will work against any attack it is faster than, to my knowledge. This includes buff spells that have no affect on Constantine (such as giving him bonuses with weapon specific attacks, like Mistress’s Command). As for the balance issue, I find it balanced enough. Hypnotic Stare and Chi Reflect can only be used every other turn at most, and if it’s used that often the player is being predictable and therefor easy to beat. Hypnotic Stare is only moderately fast, only giving a real edge against slow characters. It’s worthless against fast characters like Yoshiro or Phoebe. Chi Reflect is a very fast attack, but only works against Light magic attacks, which severely limits it’s usefulness. There’s a lot more guessing involved with Chi Reflect than Hypnotic Stare(however, Hypnotic Stare is close-range only). With either attack, if you guessed wrong you’ve wasted your turn, making them as reliable as intercepts: You have to be able to guess their move if they’re to be used affectively.

It’s an annoyingly common glitch. My losses have gone up twice today because of it. I expected to see my wins up to 35, but I guess that was silly of me.

I really agree that there should be a way to reset your Starter cards. You can’t even learn how to play the game before choosing them! I also like the idea of a time-based card swap. One card swap every 2 week seems a good amount of time to me. Long enough that you have to wait for it, not so long that you’re waiting forever. And it could be that only Starter cards can be swapped. That way you have a limited amount of cards that you can pick whatever you want with, so it still matters what cards you get from challenges.

Also, for those complaining about Touch of Death: It is one of the easiest moves to avoid. Any idea how many times I’ve made them Touch of Death themselves? Over 10 at least, maybe more. Juju is a crappy character. Go Constantine. And even without him, it’s not hard to 1) Swap characters, if they used Touch of Death that turn they wasted 80 energy. 2) Move to range. If he moves you back into close, he can’t use Touch of Death that turn, and can only use it the next turn if he rests, which means a free hit for you. Even if your character does get hit with Touch of Death, you’re fighting Juju! You should be able to kill him in less than 4 turns and get to work on another guy before it kicks in.

Cancel button! Holy crap, yes.

I’d rather people get new cards because they earned them, not “farmed” them.

Tardis: Yes, it’s obvious he used an alt. That is the point of me posting this.

Topmaster360: Look at the games I have expanded in the screenshots. They show pretty clear evidence of the guy scamming wins. He’s getting all his wins from the alt-account. And having your friend quit is just as much scamming wins as what this guy is doing.

A friend of mine mentioned a few minutes ago that he is now at the top of the high scores. . .

Challenging friends should definitely be an easier thing to do. But I also think matches arranged through the find-a-friend method should not count towards win/loss ratio, levels, or skill rank.

Topic: Kongregate Multiplayer Games / [Kongai] Cheater on Kongai

I’m not sure if this is the place to put this, but I caught a cheater on Kongai.
I was just looking at people’s stats on there and saw this guy:

Not too conclusion until I got the second shot a few minutes later:
http://img165.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cheater2il3.png

So yes, seems pretty clear he was cheating to me. The time frame there was only a couple of minutes. No where near long enough to play 3 games against a real opponent. Again, sorry if this is the wrong place/way to report this.
