Topic: Off-topic / Great Prog Bands

Now some Canterbury Scene bands:

Soft Machine (Psychedelic Jazz-Rock with some beautiful woodwind moments)
Caravan (Poppy Prog-Rock, Jazz influenced organ and flute playing and cute lyrics = twee prog)
Hatfield and the North (like Caravan but with more Jazz improvisation = twee prog 2.0)
Egg (dunno what to say about this band except they’re awesome)
Supersister (the Caravan from the Netherlands)
Jakko M. Jakszyk (modern Prog meets canterbury scenish instrumentation and melodies)
Master Cylinder (complex and beautiful Jazz-Rock)
The Muffins (one half of their albums is more RIO like, but the other half sounds more like canterbury scene)
Henrytennis (imagine a Indie Rock band trying to sound like Soft Machine in some parts)
Gong (I don’t own any of their albums so far, but they’re definetely interesting.)
Henry Cow (Avant-Chamber-Marxism-Canterbury-Prog)
Happy the Man (smooth and complex as hell, that’s how I would describe their sound)
Khan (Canterbury Scene meets Hard Rock)
Potemkine (French Zeuhl-Fusion/Canterbury band)
Sheshet (Israeli Prog-Folk + Jazz-Rock = boi, that sounds awesome!)

I don’t listen to Linkin Park this much anymore. I liked them when I was like 12 year old or something and then I got into other stuff :/ but I still enjoy their first records…

Topic: Off-topic / Great Prog Bands

Okay, here are some other favourite Prog bands of mine:

Gentle Giant (I wonder why no one mentioned this band so far…)
It Bites (Ridiciously underrated Neo-Prog band of the 80’s, they even had some Fusion influences in their music.)
Magma (John Coltrane meets Carl Orff.)
Magister Dixit (One of the best new Zeuhl bands I’ve heard so far.)
Mr. Sirus (Japanese Symphonic Prog/Canterbury/Modern Classical, one of my all-time-favourite bands)
Wigwam (Great Finnish Prog band.)
Pekka Pohjola (Prog-influenced Jazz-Rock from Finland.)
Frank Zappa (Genius…’nuff said)
Kenso (Japanese Prog-Fusion)
Cardiacs (Punk+Symphonic Prog, interesting stuff.)
KBB (Violin-driven Prog-Fusion from Japan.)
Mahavishnu Orchestra (Proggy Jazz-Rock, one of the most influential Jazz bands ever.)
Koenjihyakkei (This is one strange Japanese band…They sound a bit like Magma, but just more “in your face”.)

Topic: Off-topic / Most talented musician today?

There are thousands of talented musicians today, but I’ll go with Toby Driver. He’s not the best, but he’s definetely one of the most talented and underrated composers of the 21. century.

The whole Canterbury Scene (Caravan, Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North, Egg and many other bands…) is quite recommandable. The two Prog/Avant-garde Metal bands maudlin of the Well and Kayo Dot are also underated imo.

Topic: Off-topic / How many of us actually have a diverse taste in music?

I listen to pretty much every music that can be classified as good. I mean, there is no genre which isn’t worth to hear. Every musical style has it’s own good and bad (I prefer the term less interesting) artists. So, I’m into many genres (and subgenres). Jazz, Fusion, Metal, Rock, Classical, Ambient, Experimental, Electronic…
