[Edit] for some reason remove movieclip wasn’t working before, it works now. Thanks so much!

The code isn’t defined in the library, it’s just written on an instance of the ball I’ve placed on the main timeline.

I think I may have figured it out. What if the problem is that Flash has to check for increasingly higher and higher depths, and this is eating up the CPU? Is there any way to do this code without getNextHighestDepth?

Do you mean the first block of code or the second?

If you mean the second, it’s because when I spawn the movieclip, the code won’t be on the loaded movieclips, and I need that code to move and unload them.

Nope. Here’s the code I’m using to spawn particles, if that helps (I’m using AS2):

It looks like the forum is turning underscores into italics by the way.

On the player MC:

function createParticles() {
var particle1 = root.attachMovie(“Flame1”, "Flame1"+root.getNextHighestDepth(), root.getNextHighestDepth());
particle1.
x = this.x+Math.random()*10;
particle1.
y = this.y;
this.swapDepths(
root.getNextHighestDepth());

var particle2 = root.attachMovie(“Flame1”, "Flame1"+root.getNextHighestDepth(), root.getNextHighestDepth());
particle2.
x = this.x-Math.random()*10;
particle2.
y = this.y;
this.swapDepths(
root.getNextHighestDepth());

var particle3 = root.attachMovie(“Flame1”, "Flame1"+root.getNextHighestDepth(), root.getNextHighestDepth());
particle3.
x = this.x+Math.random()*5;
particle3.
y = this.y;
this.swapDepths(
root.getNextHighestDepth());

var particle4 = root.attachMovie(“Flame1”, "Flame1"+root.getNextHighestDepth(), root.getNextHighestDepth());
particle4.
x = this.x-Math.random()*5;
particle4.
y = this.y;
this.swapDepths(
root.getNextHighestDepth());
}
}

And on an MC inside the particle MC:

onClipEvent(enterFrame){
this.xscale -= 4;
this.
yscale -= 4;

this.y += _root.ball.yVel*10/15;

if(this.
xscale < 0){
this._parent.unloadMovie();
}
}

Good idea, but I’m not using an array, I’m spawning them with a function I repeat.

I just realized that my CPU usage is increasing steadily and the game starts to lag when it maxes out, any idea what’s causing this usage increase and how I can stop it?

So I have this cool particle effect and I’m sure I’m unloading the particles after a certain amount of time, but after a few minutes the game starts to lag and it gets progressively worse. This doesn’t happen when I turn the particle effect off. Any ideas?

If wii sports had crysis level realism, it would resemble top spin more than wii sports. Is top spin a bad game? Reviewers say no. With Wii Sports, the developers made a creative decision to keep the graphics, realism, and difficultly level toned down, and it produced a casual experience. That’s cool, but so is top spin. Do you see anyone getting really invested in wii sports the way you get emotionally invested in a good character in a great movie? No. With something like top spin, a more realistic experience is more on your level as a human, and you become more involved mentally.

I suppose it all comes down to preference. With the Wii, developers are restricted by hardware, and they pretty much have to go for the casual approach.

Frogmanex:

I know how you feel. I feel empathy for those less fortunate than us, and it would be great if we could help them out, but the U.S. government is too screwed right now to do anything about it. Sending more money we don’t have to Mexico would just make things worse for Americans, and we would end up in a similar position.

I think you’re right when you say it’s not our business to fix other countries – we have enough problems of our own right now.

If people came here legally they would work and pay taxes, and they would put more cheap labor. If we just let anyone here with a non criminal record, then we’d have a huge number of legal immigrants who work and pay taxes. Immigration is good for the economy

Have you seen the unemployment rate as of late? Introducing more citizens looking for work is not the answer, especially if those citizens are willing to work for very low wages and put more working class Americans out of a job.

We could set up a system to educate immigrants, or possibly force legal immigrants without a high-school education to go through a year of some sort of educational training.

Who’s going to pay for the training? The U.S. Government certainly can’t afford to – we are in debt for trillions and trillions of dollars. The taxpayers? Not in this economy.

Let me ask you this – if Morrowind had terrible graphics, would the immersion factor have stayed the same? The human brain sees shapes and labels them. When it sees a 3d model of a person, it thinks “Person.” When it sees a little square, it thinks “Square.” Unless you have an amazing imagination, I don’t see how improving graphics doesn’t improve immersion, regardless of how other aspects of the game come into play.

I think you’re either very imaginative or you like arguing as much as I do. When I said “Good graphics obviously make games better,” I meant the game as a whole, not the core mechanic. You can’t argue that a game with terrible graphics will receive the same score as the same game with good graphics; it’s just not true. The bottom line is, good graphics improve the game experience for the vast majority of users – therefore, for most people, a game with nice graphics is going to be more enjoyable than the same game with poor graphics. Like I said above, good graphics lend character, mood, realism, and artistry to a game when implemented correctly. For most people, seeing a bunch of little “o’s” moving around isn’t going to inspire the same fervor and emotion a horde of charging CGI enemies stirs up, and a little “x” representing your weapon isn’t going to make you feel like a badass when you shoot terrorists with it. You might be the exception.

If we would let people cross the border, as long as they comply to certain precautionary check-ups, it would encourage people not to cross illegally.

Right, it would encourage them to cross legally. Which is still crossing. There’s a reason we aren’t letting half of Mexico’s population pack up their stuff and come on in, and it’s not pride.

60% of adult illegal immigrants lack a highschool education. Think of how much we would have to pay in taxes to support all these people, especially with Obama’s new health care plan around the bend. Think of all the blue collar workers who would lose their jobs, simply because the immigrants will work for less. Just put aside your empathy for a second, and think. You will see this is a bad idea.

I should’ve worded that differently. What I meant to say was that the argument “Graphics don’t affect games” (often put forward by Wii owners) is ridiculous because good graphics are always a plus and will always positively affect a game. (A few exceptions might be made in the case of artsy or retro games.) In addition to the obvious enjoyment nice graphics provide, graphical work is often quite artistic and expressive, and can bring a certain atmosphere into a game.

Simply put: Good graphics obviously make games better – therefore, 360 and PS3 games are often more immersive, artistic, and enjoyable than their Wii counterparts. (Not to mention online play – but that’s another argument entirely.) Wii users need to accept this. If they really didn’t care about graphics, they would just shut the hell up and play their paper mario in peace.

And once again, for the record, I have both a Wii and a 360.

The thing with the graphics is, while certainly they’re nicer to look at, it’s very rare that the game is actually improved for having better graphics. There are rare occasions when this isn’t true—older hardware and fewer colors meant it could be difficult to tell what something is, and it’s a common problem on this site that color is poorly used and certain things (for example, enemy bullets) can be difficult to distinguish from backgrounds. Also, I think survival horror is a genre that just doesn’t work very well on older hardware; improved use of lighting helps the mood, and better 3D models means you’re less likely to just laugh at the thing attacking you.

Aside from these occasional exceptions though, what difference do the graphics really make? A good game is a good game no matter how it looks. Look at Mega Man. For my money, 2, 3, and X are the best games in the series; exactly how would they be improved by updated graphics? Angband uses nothing but ascii characters—do I really need a picture of a dragon instead of a capital D? It’s the same game either way

The point being, the graphics difference between the Wii and the other current-gen systems is completely irrelevant. Placing the issues with the system at the feet of its weak library and gimmicky control scheme.

While it’s true gameplay is gameplay regardless of how pretty it is, most people would much rather have a realistic-looking model of a dragon than that capital D. It makes the game more immersive, and a lot of the time that makes the game more fun. Graphics also hold artistic value. Who wasn’t blown away when they stepped out of Vault 101 at the beginning of Fallout 3 and caught their first glimpse of the massive Wasteland? Like I said before, pretty graphics shouldn’t take priority over gameplay, but saying they aren’t necessary at all is extreme and illogical.

Just because Nintendo made awesome games back in the day does not mean they make awesome games today. Sure, they have a few fun titles, but Wii is kind of gimmicky, and it gets old quick. I have a Wii, and it’s collecting dust. I know what I’m talking about. The friend code thing was an awful mistake, and most of the games simply aren’t that fun.

Making threads like these just make you look defensive and envious of people who own PS3’s or 360’s.

About the graphics: graphics shouldn’t take priority over gameplay, but saying “THEY DONT MATTER” is just stupid. Of course they matter. Would you rather have a game with nice graphics or poor ones?

But marijuana also causes brain damage.

There’s only one study that shows this to be true, and that study has been discredited. The experiment has been repeated, and the results haven’t been reproduced. Most research shows that daily marijuana use over a long period of time causes short term damage to your brain. This leads to stuff like poor short term memory and dampened reaction times. After abstaining from marijuana consumption for a few months, this damage was completely reversed, even in chronic users.

As for the damage to the lungs: although it’s not a big concern compared to cigarettes, using a vaporizer will keep you healthy, if you want to play it safe.

To sum it up: heavy marijuana use is not a good idea, just as heavy use of any drug is not a good idea. Heavy use of alcohol or even caffeine are sure to cause health problems. Smoking marijuana occasionally is not going to hurt you, just as the occasional cup of coffee or beer isn’t going to hurt you. It’s when you smoke too much that problems occur, but with marijuana, even those problems are reversible, and marijuana does not damage developing brains like alcohol does.

Marijuana is much less harmful than alcohol.

Rhyming is not what makes a good poem my friend. :) Hope you wrote that yourself. Taking it from somewhere just to post here is not really appreciated.

Yeah, I wrote it myself, I just copied it from my site. Haha I wasn’t aiming to write a good poem, I literally just sat down one day and wrote that because rhyming is fun :p
