Topic: Game Programming / Blur bitmap in AIR for Android

Desktop version using standard blur filter

Mobile version with the cheeky function. Quite like the lo-fi blurring :D

Topic: Game Programming / Blur bitmap in AIR for Android

I sorted it after discovering this:

import fl.motion.Color;
Color.interpolateColor(colour1,colour2,ratio)

Then wrote a cheeky function that goes through the pixels, every other one, and plots a new colour half way between, if that makes sense :D

Thanks, yeah I’m starting to think that’s the way forward, just tough getting head around the comparisons and off-shifting the colour values! :S

Hi,

I’m trying to blur a bitmap data object but the target platform is Android / Mobile which doesn’t support (as far as I’m aware) filters.

Has anyone got any ideas how a blur effect can be achieved? I have a bitmap, 256 X 256 that needs blurring, it’s not in a game loop so could loop through the bitmap data but not sure where to start …

You can turn the blur on and off in the pause menu or options :D

Hmm yeah i know, would be nice to know if their contest takes into account length of time the game has been released also, oh well.

Actually just looking at the other weekly games, Im disappointed now that this, which isn’t even a game, beat me just because it was released a day before the end of the deadline. :(

http://www.kongregate.com/games/Abigayl/stencyl-2-0-tutorial-1-basics

That has to be a flaw in the rating / weekly / monthly chart system? If I release a game 24hours before the end of the week, get 10 ratings of high stars from my mates, a few hundred plays, that beats a game with tens of thousands of plays with thousands of ratings? Maybe I’m getting the wrong end of the stick as to how the rating / weekly contest works?

I launched it! Sorry I forgot to update this thread.

It took nearly a year and I learned loads this being my first game teaching myself AS3 as I went but I think it’s been well worth it. At one point it was even in the top 3 of the weekly comp, but a couple of game released in the last day of the week pipped it at the post.

Thanks again to all the feedback given, you all helped loads!

Thanks!

Yes there is a very early concept of a help in the Pause menu, I must stress this is NO way finished, text is just gibberish at the moment. I’m thinking that on first play this will display to help. Very much making it up as I go along so a really organic process, been struggling with the help section.

It’s been a few months since I’ve posted here, but thought I’d pop back with what’s been happening seeing as this thread was the starting point for the game I’m writing. I’m happy to say I’ve just got a playable public beta version up and running again for anyone to play here:

http://www.reprisaluniverse.com/beta/

A LOT has changed. I explored path-finding and AI code, different styles of game play, read loads about AS3 while learning it on the job.

This now includes full A* pathfinding which was a pain in the neck to put in. There are 16 levels to play with, improved CPU players etc. Anyway, see what you think, it’s still being completed but it’s getting there. Nearly a year on from when I first started after breaking my jaw!

:D

New build just released! Has a total of six islands which consist of Challenge mode in which your aim is to collect a ‘Totem’ and Reprisal mode which requires you to take out any other tribes that may be on the island.

Play now here: http://www.reprisaluniverse.com/playreprisal/

@Yawgmoth, yeah instructions are much needed. You can raise a lower land by selecting the ‘earth’ elements option and then the ‘terra-form’ tool. Your mouse cursor will change to a up arrow when you can raise land. By pressing space bar this switches to lowering land tool.

Hmm, the blur effect seems to be the big ‘nice’ look that people comment on, I guess I can make a settings or options toggle to turn the effect on and off if it’s getting in the way?

Thanks for the replys

Hi,

I originally started a thread in Programming about 6months ago as I started to develop this game and had programming questions but I realise that the updates have been less about code and more about the games progress so decided to start a thread here.

Reprisal is a RTS game based on my love of the classic Populous. You control your tribe and the aim is to take over entire islands by building land and using powers. I must stress its still in development and there is no tutorial but it’s getting there. In a nut shell your the blue guys and you must take out anyone else you find on the islands.

And if your interested in seeing the journey of development this game has taken you can see pretty pictures and pixels here:

Thanks for your time, all feedback welcomed :D

Topic: Game Programming / Scanning data - from centre outwards

Hi,

I’m a little stuck with a dataloop I want to make. I would like to be able to scan a grid of data but from a centre point outwards. I’ll try to explain.

At the moment I can easily scan the grid from left to right, top to bottom using two For loops. One on the X and the other on the Y.

What I’d like to do is start from a point and work out … some how. It also needs to be light and fast :S I’m not going to be scanning a large area of data, at the most a grid of 10 X 10.

Hope it makes sense, any help or theory would be great,
Thank you!

Ha!! fine

Started working on the CPU player’s A.I for controlling and unleashing their own powers against you. This is going to dramatically ramp up the toughness factor to conquer islands with each CPU player having their own play style. I’m not going to go into too much detail and bore you all with the in’s and out’s but the A.I looks for ‘intresting’ areas of the game area and weighs up what it should do depending on what it finds! Watch this space…

Update made to demo link [v0.5] includes early A.I routines
Play demo v0.5 here

@MoonlaughMaster I’m thinking about doing something a little left field, making instructions / tutorial as a downloadable PDF booklet, propper old skool :D

Its been really up and down but I’ve added new updates and demo build to Reprisal. Added new terrain types and an extra island to the demo which, if you collect it, has a ‘fire mountain’ power for you to play with :D

You can as normal play the demo through the dev blog here

Also there is a new game play video I’ve just posted on YouTube here should that float your boat.

I’ve not posted for a while here as the dev has ebbed and flowed but at the moment it’s back in full swing so I thought I’d strike while the irons hot!

There’s been some updates made and you should hopefully find the game is running faster thanks to some number crunching. There are now 3 islands in the demo for you to play with. You can play with the most recent demo build on this link:
http://dev.electrolyte.co.uk/flash/pop/yiro9384j01/

Yes you are the blue player, the instructions and tutorial are still on my list of things to do :D

The full dev blog can be followed here (just so I don’t spam this forum with updates)

Again thank you for all your comments and feedback.

It’s getting there, slowly :D

OK so it’s not finished … and this isn’t even a demo or pre-beta but it is playable :D

I really want to get it finished by the end of the year, but it’s been a massive undertaking learning AS3, doing the graphics and putting it all together in my spare time!

Pre-demo-beta-test – Reprisal

Thoughts, comments and feedback are warmly welcomed. Thank you.

Topic: Game Programming / Mouse XY to isometric XY

Hi all,

I’m trying to translate the XY position of the mouse to a XY position in isometric. In a normal flat tile based setup I’d do the following:

x = Math.floor(mouseX/tileWidth);
y = Math.floor(mouseY/tileHeight);

This would let me look at the data in this point, but I can’t work out how to translate this in isometric. I’ve tried reversing the isometric plot but with no luck. Any pointers would be great, hope the question makes sense,

Thanks.
