Topic: Game Programming / Embedding Flash Games Onto a Flash Website

unfortunately, I cannot view most online videos at the moment due to a faulty graphics card and this one didn’t work for me :(
However, I’m using AS2 (sorry should have said this earlier). I can load an external .swf but I can’t get the _lockroot to work properly, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it.

Right, I removed my graphics card (it was taking the right p…) That link’s video doesn’t have a pause button and it doesn’t buffer so I’m watching 1 second clips with 20 second gaps so I give up on that video.

Yes, sorry for the confusion, it is a external .swf being loaded into a .swf

Sorry for redoing, the other thread went off in a tangent and will be confusing to people.

I am trying to place a game (separate .swf) onto a flash-only website.

Based on this:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AS2LCR/Flash_10.0/help.html?content=00001321.html

I used AvoidThisContainer._lockroot = true

Without this, the game doesn’t get past the pre-loader. However some things still don’t work, for example I can now move through the walls, also, the music doesn’t work. This is strange because the sound effects do (e.g. clicking on a button makes a noise).

Does anyone know why?

The first game I made, New Space Age (based on Shoot! and had separate files for most of the actionscript) works perfectly. On AvoidThis almost all of the code is attached onto movieclips or frames, maybe someone can explain why one works and other doesn’t? They both use the exact same code to play the music, but one works and the other doesn’t.

Here is the link to the .swf so you can see what I’m on about – it takes quite a while for a game to load, please be patient.

Don’t worry about the other stuff such as seeing bits you shouldn’t, I’ll fix that stuff after I can get it to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

If I upload the .swf’s to the internet, they work (should have tried that sooner). I would have thought though, that the flash player would behave the same way as opening via flash (ie the ad not loading because of it not having internet access) instead of not showing any of the mochiad stuff (not even the pre-loader) and causing the .swf to just stop on the loading page.

Anyway, sorry for the fuss, I suppose as long as it works online that’s all that matters.

I thought this was just a bad dream, but it’s still happening :(
I don’t have quite a few of the fonts used in the .swf, does that make a difference? Also, I save the .fla as cs4 when I’m using cs5, is that known to have an effect (clutching at straws here).

For anyone new to this thread: all my mochiad pre-loaders have stopped working on my .swf’s without me having altered them in anyway. However, they will work only if I open with via Flash (not Flash Player).

whether I test movie the .fla or just open the .swf via flash, it shows the preloader. But double clicking doesn’t show it.

no sorry, it’s the exact same .swf that acts differently depending if I open it via flash (cs5) or double clicking it to open with adobe flash player 10, these are the .swf that are the games (not embedded or anything yet). It’s quite strange because it shouldn’t even be possible :\
I can’t really show it to you guys because you can only see the .swf that doesn’t show the preloader even though when I’m testing it (through flash) it is showing it. It must be a glitch surely?

I’ll try to explain it differently (sounds confusing to me reading it and I know what I’m trying to say).

I play A.swf by double clicking it or I play A.swf by opening it via flash CS5… each method produces a different effect, how can this be?

I don’t think it’s worth the hassle converting from _root. I keep coming across things that are above me and would require me to nag at all you for help for ages.

Stuff like:

x= _ root. _ xmouse

when turned to:

x=_xmouse

act differently even though the code was on a movie clip that was on the root level. So if someone could instead just tell me why the .swf’s act differently depending on how I open them, I’ll be on my way :D

I just checked all my .swf’s and none of them work right; if I double click on them, the pre-loader doesn’t appear and so it’s stuck on the loading page forever, but if I open the .swf via Flash the pre-loaders shows. I’m pretty sure this wasn’t the case before? I’m worried that if I try to upload a new version then the pre-loader won’t show.

Just to clarify, I ran .swf’s that I haven’t touched in months, the same versions I have uploaded here that work, but they don’t work on my computer when I double click them, but they do work if I open them through flash. When I double click, adobe flash player 10 opens up to play them, in case that’s important.

Anyone have an idea as to what’s going on? :s In the mean time I’ll keep converting the code from _root. although if someone can solve this, I’d be most grateful as I think the _lockroot = true would have worked and obviously that’s much quicker to do.

Thanks for that lockroot, but I’m having a strange issue.
I tested it first with a keyframe running through the whole .swf but the pre-loader wouldn’t appear so I edited so the lockroot starts after the mochi-ad line of code, I tested this and it seemed okay. However, if I run the .swf that is created, the mochi-ad pre-loader doesn’t load :s I know it is the same .swf as I can delete it, test the file in flash and it is created again. I have no idea how it’s possible that the same .swf acts differently when I press ctrl + [enter] in flash to when I double-click it outside flash. Am I just being stupid or is something strange?

I need to fix this so that I can embed it into the web page so that I can see if it works.

Apart from all that though, I’d still like to know how the _parent thing works when applied to a frame in a movieclip, not to an actual movieclip in a movieclip.

I’m stuck again :(

I am inside a movieclip and I want the main time line to start. I had on the last frame (on the frame itself):

_root.nextFrame();

I tried:

parent.nextFrame();
this.parent.nextFrame();

but it doesn’t work, anyone know what I should be putting instead. If not, I’ll just plop a 1 pixel box each place I have this problem and try to stick the code onto it, although I remember before having issues with OnEnter or whatever it was (haven’t used flash in ages, and I used to suck anyway).

Okay, I’ll feel guilty for asking for more until I actually stop messing about with the graphics card and work on the bloody website.

Thanks again, this really is one of the best sites for action script help.

Okay thanks I’ll try that. Sorry for delay in responding; this new graphics card or drivers or whatever is causing all sorts of crashes.

But just to clarify, say B wishes to look at a variable that’s on the main time line:

if (this.parent.parent.NameOfVariable == true)
{
GrowNasalFluff = true
}

That would work?

I never get how it knows if I’m talking about an instant name or a variable. I try out combinations in the mean time thanks.

Another thing, is it possible to label layers (this is assuming that A is seen as on the same layer as Q) instead of ‘parent’-ing my way.

_Layer1 or _Layer2 or whatever instead of _root or is this not done/ not possible.

Thanks again

lol at the idea of someone stealing my digital turds. I remembered reading the woes of people having _roots tangling up (like roots you could say :D).

Can I just use parent instead or something. If so, can I go parent.parent.parent. etc the number of times needed to reach what would have been my ‘root’

If you could give one example line of referencing from within a movieclip to another moviclip that is in a movieclip on the root, I’d know roughly what to do.

I know that sounds weird, imagine 0 being root, therefore a-1 contacting b-2. a and b being the movieclips (not sure that helps at all really :s)

I’m really bad at programming and don’t know the technical wordings of such things. I normally try to extrapolate from tutorials and they always used _root.

Thanks for help.

Thanks for the stuff, I should have spotted the edit post thing. Is there a particular advantage for using a site like megaswf over what I did? (Thanks for telling me about them, I’m just curious).

I don’t use a separate file as a preloader, the whole thing is one file.
I’ve been swapping graphics cards so been a bit distracted so sorry about the delay in response. This new one is louder than my fridge :\

Uh.. not being pushy, but I can’t edit posts (at least I can’t see how) to quote you and maybe you get sent a message when someone quotes you?

Not sure if this works, but try:

http://beastialpride.web.officelive.com/Documents/new%20webpage.swf

Click on Avoid This then on the gorgeous, green hunk of a button. After loading is done the game scarpers off into the sunset.

I tried creating a movieclip just called ‘container’, and loading the .swf as external movieclip into that. However, everything has moved out of place (eg loading bar is in wrong place) and when the loading has ended it just disappears. I do have Mochiad / Mochimedia (or whatever they call themselves now) pre-loaders on them; maybe that causes the issue?

I think when it says gotoandplay(5) it is doing something with the host page, but I’m awful at debugging; I’m more the bang the monitor hard type of guy.

I’ll try to find somewhere to upload it though so I can show what I mean.

Since I’m here; can I embed an AS3 .swf in a AS2 .swf?

Sorry if this has been covered before; I searched all over web and can’t find something on it and the search on this site is kinda crap (sorry :p)

I want to make a flash website and load flash games onto it (like friv.com). Problem is, when I load up a game, things go wrong; I think its variables and AS gets tangled with the web page :s

Is there a way to load the .swf as a file where it is a separate entity completely so that it cannot interfere with its host page. Sorry this is quite hard to word.

I just want to embed it as you would on a html page… is this possible or do I have to edit every game so that it doesn’t interfere (I’m guessing I just change all the _root.XYZ to something more appropriate, make sure no duplicate variables are being used etc.?).

I’m using AS2 by the way. Any help would be appreciated.

Easiest way by far for me was one heavy cannon and the rest shield buffers. Have shield buffers interlocking so that only one, the one furthest from combat, is open to attack, and upgrade the health whilst upgrading damage for heavy cannon.
This way only missiles can even touch you, and even then with your high health you can take quite a few before getting seriously hurt and also heavy cannon kills basically everything in 1-2 hits. Never lost a single turret throughout the entire game with this set up.
PS. it helps if your not bent with the heavy cannon
