As soon as my fist contacts the construct, it pops and vanishes, leaving behind chunks of gray goo on my hand. I sniff it before bringing it to my mouth and licking some off. It tastes minty. And… oh? I’m feeling something. It feels good.

“Oh YEAH!

I shoot ten feet into the air, trailing black fire, feeling stronger than I have in a long time. I now know what I must do. I smile before flying west at breakneck speed, now confident in my purpose.

“I don’t know… that part of my memory seems a bit hazy. Let’s find out!” I punch the man in the face, shadows trailing behind my arm.

“Then I’m the guy who’s supposed to be screwing the world up as much as possible, but doesn’t know how yet. Maybe that’s why you’re here?” Black fire surrounds my hands.

“Depends, you talking to the man or the mask? Regardless, I’m new around here.” I cross my arms and stare at him.

Sad. I can’t find another mountain, and I’m starting to get bored again, so— wait. There’s a guy who’s solid black standing among the trees. I run at him and stop an inch from his face. “Hey! I’m the shadowy guy here! Who the hell are you?”.

Well, it’s been a week, and I’m already bored. Random destruction is fun, like that mountain that used to be here, but the sooner I figure out my purpose here, the sooner I can start working on it and the sooner I can get a new host. Regardless— ooh, look a bunny. I run over to pet it and it tries to bite my arm off. Adorable. Hey. Hey bunny. Can you understand me? Good. Stop trying to eat me. It backs off and I pet it. “Okay then! More destruction until I figure shit out!” I fly off into the distance in search of something else huge and destructible.

Shepard
Have you ever had a dream where you’re falling, but you can’t seem to wake up, and you start enjoying it? Well that’s what being carried by someone who’s flying is like. When your girlfriend works at the same place as you, it becomes your default mode of transportation. So you’d think I’d be used to weaving around buildings because Jenny thinks it’ll be fun to mess with me. You’d be horribly wrong. Just now, I barely missed having my legs cut off by a girder in a construction site, because she pulled me up at the last second. I recoil from the expected shock, only to snap out of it when I hear her laughing above me. “That’s really not funny, you know.”
“Oh hush. You’re fine.”
“I still hate when you do that.”
“You love me and you know it. Now where’s this building you got a call about?”
“I’ll know when I see it. In the meantime, could you please stop trying to kill me?”

Ten minutes later, Jenny and I are standing on the roof of an abandoned apartment complex, waiting for whatever it was I was told to wait for. For now, we’re both sitting on the edge, looking up at the sky. I’m about to give up on waiting when I see a shooting star darting between the clouds. Suddenly, it stops. Not like it disappeared, it literally stops in midair and just hangs there for a few seconds. Then it starts getting bigger. It takes me a second, but it’s clearly coming right at us. Jenny and I both get up, and she starts trying to take off. Too late. It gets too close. The flight spell fails. I can see what looks like a piece of scrap metal plummeting toward me at who knows how fast. It fills my vision, striking me in the face. Everything goes dark.

Chaos
I examine the crushed rubble of the building around me, cursing this man for choosing the worst possible spot. This kind of destruction will attract attention, something I don’t need just yet. The girl lies a few feet away, weak, but alive. How “I” survived is a mystery, but I’m not complaining. I need to get away. I jump far above the building and shoot off beyond the city, black flames trailing behind me. “I suppose you’ll do, number three.”

“I’m sorry, but Mr. Keyes is preoccupied with science at the moment. I can take a message, if you’d like.”
“Cut the secretary act, Beta. Just get off this channel and put me through to Nick.”
“Whatever you say, kid. You’re the one with the death wish.”
“Fine, I’ll hold.”
“There. Now was that so hard?”
A few seconds later, and an image of Nick Shimmers into view in front of me. Alex, I’m raiding some tombs with Sarah right now. Make it quick.
“I’m coming back.”
Why the sudden change of heart?
“Dominic stabbed me in the face. It hurt like a bitch, and my Guardian says he won’t leave until I ‘set things right’”
And what makes you think that me letting you back in is what you need to do?
“Because that’s the only thing I hadn’t managed to set right. Everything else I’ve either repaid or died for.”
And you won’t betray us again, otherwise I have permission to kill you?
“You don’t kill people.”
And that was a test. You passed. But before I let you back, there’s someone I need you to pick up. I believe you know her? Shape-shifter? Not much older than you?
“Wait, you mean Arya? I never told you about her, how do you know who she is?”
Let’s just say I have many uses for one particular spell. Also when you go to find her, she might be with Dominic. Bye! The image vanishes with a pop, dropping a small scroll with a strange symbol on it, a circle with three curved lines extending from it. A note is attached, saying You’ve earned it. The mirror guy will explain more.
“Nick, you piss me off so much sometimes, but you get shit done when you need to.” I pick up the scroll and start walking, away from Moscow and off to my new adventure.

I’m sitting on the edge of a dock on the Moskva River, staring at the passing boats. There’s a second where time seems to slow down, and the strange man with the mirrored skin walks up behind me. “I know what you’re doing here. And I’m not leaving.”
“I didn’t say anything, kid. You just guessed what I was going to say. That means you’re learning.”
“Yeah, I get it. So are you here for any reason besides being an jackass?”
“Depends. Do you think you’re ready?” He sits down next to me, mimicking my appearance. “The old man left a message for you. Says when you’re ready, he’ll let you back.”
“I kick at the water for a few seconds, during which an awkward silence forms. “How does he know I want to go back to them?”
“He knows everything, that man.”
“Shut up. What else did he say?”
“He’d send his offer within a few days. Which was a few days ago, so probably pretty damn soon.”
“I hate you so much right now.” Just then, a small metal raft floats by, carrying a wooden crate bearing the image of a yellow hexagon with a stylized black bee in the center.
“You were saying?”
“You’re the best retarded spirit guide ever.” I dive into the water and drag it onto the dock. The fragile crate breaks easily in my hands, dropping its contents onto the dock. “Oh hell yes.”
“I take that to mean you accept?”
I look up at him after taking off my purple and black jacket, replacing it with a pair of cobalt blue gauntlets, only a small part of the set of scaly, insectlike armor sprawled across the platform. “Tell Nick I’ll have my answer by tomorrow morning.”

I open the door, a large stone knife strapped to my waist. “Yeah, I remember. Whenever you’re ready, I guess. And as long as you’re here, why were you talking to Dominic and Eclipsis Void?”

I drain my glass before resuming conversation. “Worst case scenario, we could just pay a telepath to fix whatever it is that’s wrong with you. But let’s try to keep that unless we’re out of options. What do you think we should do first?”

“I’m fine, just my head messing with me.” I take a sip of my drink before swallowing with a bit of disgust. “Anyway, we’re safe for now. I already checked, no mutants anywhere within a mile of this place. I make no guarantees about mages, but if we don’t draw any attention, we should be fine.”

I start scanning the bar for mutants when a chunk of reflective glass fades in in front of me. It’s the same guy I’ve been seeing for the past couple of weeks. Why are you doing this?
“I’m making sure I’m not getting assaulted while I’m in here.”
Not the question. Why are you here with her?
“She needed help, and I’m providing it. What’s wrong with that?”
What’s wrong is that you’ve never cared about people. Why should you start now?
“I’m trying to prove that I’m not the mindless murderer I used to be. Wallenquist deserved to die. Everyone gets what’s coming to them.”
What about you?
“I’m working it off. No more killing unless I don’t have a choice.”
The man shifts to match my appearance. He leans in until I can hear him breathig and squints. Look, kid. I am you. Everything you were, everything you will be. You’re gonna go back to your old life. And I’ll be there waiting for it. He changes back to his mirrored appearance and fades away, leaving me there trying to figure out what just happened.

“Sonds good to me, but at the first sign of trouble, I’m bolting.” I walk over and sit at a table in the corner, and wait for Arya to sit down. “Then again, this is more your decision, since I can’t legally drink.”

Alex- Moscow (One week later)
A portal spits me out in a dark room somewhere cold. The only source of light is from a small window near the ceiling, but I can tell from the constant noise from above that I’m in the basement of somewhere crowded, possibly a tavern. Either way, we’re at least close to our destination. A few seconds later, a second portal opens and Arya walks out. A small fireball forms in my hand to combat the chill of the dank cellar. “Well, we got here without dying, and faster than expected. What now?”

“Are you okay? You look kind of sick, and if you are, I don’t think a sewer’s the best place for you right now.” The grate reforms. “If you can’t keep going, then we should probably stop for a while.”

“Yeah, it’s probably best if we do that pretty quickly. Five mutants dead or unconscious in a short range, people are gonna start asking questions.” I reestablish the cloak before melting a sewer grate nearby. “You want to go first or should I?”

I’m currently sitting against a wall only a few feet from Arya when I flicker into view. “You did good there. Didn’t look like you needed my help.” I walk over to the two she killed and place one hand on each of their heads. My hands glow, metallic gray and fiery orange, and my eyes follow suit. I remove their masks before lifting them over my shoulders. “I say we just drop these guys in the street and let the NUO deal with them.”

“Works for me. As long as you can stall long enough for me to recover, this might actually work.” My eyes switch to a color so pale that they’re almost transparent. “We’ve got three Kinetics(one each of Fire, Ice, and Lightning), one guy with blades everywhere, and one with super-strength.” I modify the cloak so that Arya becomes visible while covering myself up for my expected collapse. “Good luck.”

I’ve managed to walk a few blocks without drawing attention to myself, when the sound of a fight breaking out reaches me. Gogdammit… I come to a stop and turn to look at Arya. “I think I found a way out.” The two of us slip into a nearby alley to see a girl, probably in her mid-twenties, surrounded by five mutants, all male, most significantly larger. Each of them is wearing a black domino mask across their face, giving their eyes an eerie blankness. “Okay, any ideas beyond ‘I deal with them?’ You could try mimicking me again.”
