Topic: Serious Discussion / Population and Individuality: Quantity or Quality?

Obviously the quality of life varies from place to place. However, since the beginning of the existence of humans, we’ve advanced in incredible ways. Thus the quality of life has overall increased over time, along with our population. At the current time, the quality of life for small percentage of the world is outstanding, and likewise the quality of life for another percentage is very poor. I would argue that, averaging it all out, the quality of life is getting better.

Topic: Serious Discussion / What SHOULD the U.S. do to end/control drugs?

Dr_Stein, I think you’re missing the fact that humans will make their own decisions no matter what the government says. The idea is that the government would keep individuals and groups from harming other individuals and groups (including, but not limited to, their own citizens) but not to protect each person from themselves.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Arizona illegal immigrant crackdown law.

My teacher is from Argentina and he says that the certificate of being a citizen is larger than a typical 8.5 × 11. And, it’d be best not to fold it. To carry that around is annoying to say the least. Plus, it just opens the door to discrimination. I’m nearly a hundred percent sure that any typical white person in Arizona will never be asked for their identification.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Polygamy, Is it really a bad thing?

Polygamy in and of itself is not wrong. It’s how it is used in action that it causes problems. For example, the horrible mistreatment of women and even non-consenting young women.

Kinda like communism. Good ideally, bad in practice.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Will we ever get rid of handicapped people?

Pikachu, I used to feel awkward around handicapped people as well, until I dated someone whose mom is handicapped. I believe, there is a sort of social stigma attached to doing the wrong thing. Sorry, Vika, but I don’t think this kind of problem is so uncommon.

Let’s say you have a handicapped person in front of you and they’re having slight trouble opening the door. Do you, A. help them open the door, or B. let them do it themselves. I used to pick A, but then found that, around 80% of the time, I would be snapped at with “I can do it just fine, thank you!” or “My arms still work, you bigot.” If I picked B, people around me would frown upon me not taking up my “civic duty” or whatnot. It really is a predicament.

I’ve found that handicapped people are more likely to ask for help if they need it, so option A isn’t typically the one to go with. People who glare at you for choosing option B are just too dull to find this out for themselves.

Topic: Serious Discussion / We should NOT feed kids at school. Period.

My mother is actually a lunch lady, so I have some interesting viewpoints on this subject. If you want better quality of food, you either pay more for it, or stop complaining. Most of the time, the schools are just serving the government mandated food and really have no choice. So, uh, Trickysticks, your opinion is pretty much useless, thanks for playing.

I truly believe that the best path is to first, make school lunches healthier (Thanks M. Obama!) and then work on making it more appealing to children. Priorities.

You know, sometimes school lunch is the only meal that a kid gets in a whole day perhaps due to poverty. I believe they appreciate the system much more than the pessimistic give them credit for.

Obviously humans would start the war, then cockroaches who have some resistance, would probably inherit the earth, eventually devising language, and become Pikmin.

… Yes, that seems incredibly likely.

The most probable are India v. China, Iran v. World (most likely US), North Korea v. United States, or Israel v. Palestine. Along with what someone said earlier in this thread, Russia is a wild card. As with these, you can still have the possibility of a terrorist organization obtaining nuclear or biological weapons.

Never heard it, but if you describe it as big brotherish, then no, I don’t like it.

Apathetic

Not enough information.

Yes, yes. That happened.
But then again, it happens in America, as well.

Hmmm, I read through this pdf you have as the first link. It’s mildly comparable, but I don’t think it’s enough to truly compare the horrors the Nazis enacted upon the Jews to a study for which inmates were paid. Of course there were questionable morals behind it, let’s be honest, it was the 50s to 70s when this occurred. But even so, there was some sort of reimbursement in place to, I suppose, pay the prisoners for getting their testicles radiated.

I guarantee you that the Nazis made no such offer to their captives.

So yarga, is your only point of argument that the Nazis didn’t use gas chambers or are you arguing that the Germans themselves did absolutely no harm to their captives? We’ve been focusing so much on the gas chamber aspect, that I’m curious what else you believe to be false.

Please use the edit post function to consolidate your posts.

Also, considering Russia and the US just signed START, I think we’ll be okay.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Dad sues church

We watched a documentary about the Westboro Baptist Church in my Political Science class, and, while they are to be abhorred, it is constitutional through freedom of speech. The Supreme Court nearly always rules in favor of the first amendment, no matter how heinous. Take Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition for an example. In this case, they ruled that virtual child pornography is legal through freedom of speech, even if standard child pornography is not. The courts are leaning towards liberty in every sense of the word, so it is unlikely that anything will come of this lawsuit.

Topic: Serious Discussion / My wife is right.

It’s outright ridiculous how far people are going with this whole tea party idea.

Why, just the other day, my boyfriend and I were driving past a house that had a giant sign reading “HONK IF YOU HATE SOCIALISM” with other multiple signs in the yard reading similar viewpoints.

The tea party movement, as a whole, is 100% uneducated about the true nature of American government if all they whine about is the health care bill being socialist.

That’s not part of the discussion, zamininc.

I think that the government should have the right to remove these pets from their owner’s “care” (if you can call it that) if the animals are being abused.

Derivative, I like your format for your list of books. Hope you don’t mind if I use it too. :]

Read: The Viking in the Wheat Field by Susan Dworkin (Fantastic book about UG99)

Reading: The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand (So long, but her philosophy is so magical)

Going to read: Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid’s Tale was good, so I thought I’d try this.)

Topic: Serious Discussion / Why do people think Atheists are sinners?

Who are we to spread our own religious opinions to other people and judge them for that? It’s insane. Let them live their own lives in peace, for God’s sake. Besides, one of the things of Christianity is that God will watch mankind and decide who goes to Heaven and Hell. It’s not your place to judge.
