Topic: Game Programming / Preloaders: What do the do, and why do I want one?

no the preloader doesn’t load the data.

when you start a flash game in a browser the flash game wont goto the first frame until everything is loaded. although when you untick export in frame 1 in a items properties the game will run without waiting for it to load.

So if you untick export in frame 1 for everything except the preloader items the game will run when your preloader is loaded.

when your game goes to your 1st frame you will have a display so the user knows the game is working and you would have some code that tells the game to stop and wait for everything to load before it goto your main menu or what ever you want to run.

thats pretty much how a preloader works.

i found that moly’s tutorials didn’t explain a few things when i was trying to learn as3. like she didn’t explain that static variables and functions belonged to the class, i dont think. and she didn’t explain why she used a class as a variable type. e.g. var menuScreen:MenuScreen;

personally it was confussing to me and i found a better tut by the time i got half way through it.

Topic: Game Programming / AS2 vs AS3 - AS2 is for lazy people!

once you learn as3 its just as easy as as2. Although as2 takes about an hour to learn the basics. but as3 takes alot longer.

Once u have learnt as2 its a very daunting thing to switch from as2 to as3.

Note: This is all my opinion, other people might feel differently.

this is an awsome tutorial. it explains the best coding practices to use and pretty much explain all the basics and more. It takes a while to finish though.

Topic: Game Programming / [as3] removing something from the screen

thx man i tryed everything except that.

“U” closed and opened the upgrade screen but i was listening to “u” in the game class to open it and listening to “U” in the upgrade screen class. so when it closed it opened at the same time.

but now i got another problem. i open it once and it closes but then the next time it opens it runs the constructor but i don’t think it get added to the screen.

Edit:
I checked and it is being added to the stage. but i just cant see it

Topic: Game Programming / [as3] removing something from the screen

ok usually i can delete things from the screen no problem but for some reason my hideUpgradeScreen function will run once but nothing will be removed and then the second time it says Error #2007: Parameter child must be non-null.

		public function showUpgradeScreen()
		{
			upgradeScreen = new UpgradeScreen( this );
			upgradeScreen.x = 50;
			upgradeScreen.y = 75;
			addChild( upgradeScreen );
			upgradeScreen.addEventListener( NavagationEvent.HIDEUPGRADE, hideUpgradeScreen );
		}

		public function hideUpgradeScreen( navagationEvent:NavagationEvent )
		{
			removeChild( upgradeScreen );
			upgradeScreen = null;
		}

“In Space without a paddle” was a fun shooter, but later in the game, when the meteors take two shots, you have no chance of survival…

i was going to make an upgrade screen so you could upgrade your damage and other stuff.
im going to continue making In Space Without A Paddle and add alot of thing like particles, upgrade screen, you might even be able to buy fuel maybe and a better play and retry button.

Topic: Game Programming / [as3] a couple of questions

ok i noticed i was posting quite a few random questions on the forum and it looked like i was spamming a bit so every time i had a question i rit it down on a text file and these are my questions:

Question 1:

do i have to declare a data type for functions and wat effect does it have ?
example: public function doSomething():DataType
Question 2:

say you have a enter frame function or a onTick function or wat ever, is it better to have all your code on
that function and have better performance or call other functions that do small bits of it in the main
function to make it easier to error check?

Note: i meen only when you have about 200 or more lines of code in your main reoccuring function
(e.g. enter frame).
Question 3:

how do u get the value of the swf width and height?
Question 4:

what is the standard way of setting out a 3 dimentional array.
example: 2d array = [[1,0,0,1],
		     [0,0,1,1]];

Topic: Game Programming / i have 30 days

well im not that experienced in how to make the maximum money out of flash games but im pretty sure ur not going to make 700 dollars.

mabye if ur really good at game design and you spend alot of time on your game you might be able to get a sponsorship. that might get you a few hundred dollars

Topic: Game Programming / [as3] referencing variables

ok so maybe my question was a little to much to ask and probably didn’t make sense.

so wat i want to know is. can you have a reference to a variable and pass it through a function.
examle:
var mainMenu = MainMenu( variableReference );

Topic: Game Programming / [as3] referencing variables

ok so im making an upgrade screen and my upgrade screen pops up on top of the game screen.

and im trying to design how my upgrade screen is going to work.

im going to have an array which in that array has objects. those objects hold the price, what variable its upgrading and by how much, ect…

the only problem is i dont know how to tell my upgrade screen which variable in the game object should be changed.

the only wild idea ive had is a string and in the upgrade screen class ill have a function that links the strings with the right variable.
