Topic: Game Programming / Totally lost with Bitmaps and BitmapData

I totally gave up on blitting for this project. I have way too many objects that are rotating on screen. And to use draw() means a conversion to radians, followed by four trigonometry calculations per object, per frame. It was incredibly inefficient. I think I’ll save it for projects with actual bitmaps and tilesheets.

Yeah, I don’t actually have any bitmaps, just movie clips.

Matrices. Thanks Vesper. :) Knew I was missing something.

Topic: Game Programming / Totally lost with Bitmaps and BitmapData

Backstory: did Actionscript years ago, got burnt out. Figured I’d try again now that I’m older and more mature, but all my previous work is gone. So I’m relearning everything from scratch.

I know that “blitting” is super efficient, so after I got the basics down, adding children to the stage and getting them to interact with each other, I knew that I had to work out Bitmaps all over again. But try as hard as I like, I do not understand what I’m doing wrong.

public class Main extends MovieClip {
	public var stageDrawingData:BitmapData = new BitmapData(1000,800,true,0xFF000000);
	public var stageDrawing:Bitmap;
}

public function Main():void {
	this.stageDrawing = new Bitmap(this.stageDrawingData);
	stage.addChild(this.stageDrawing);
}

private function everyFrame(e:Event):void {
	this.drawStage();
}

public function drawStage():void {
	this.stageDrawingData.dispose();
	this.stageDrawingData = new BitmapData(1000,800,true,0xFF000000);
	this.stageDrawingData.draw(ship);
}

With this code, I can see where the ship is supposed to be because I can see it interacting with other objects that are still being added to the stage. But it’s not visible. Does anyone know why?

Topic: BattleCry / Finding Battle for ages

Does anyone else have trouble finding a match? I sat on the “finding battle” screen for about five minutes and just gave up. Do I have a problem or is there just no one playing this game?

EDIT: I know that it can work because I’ve gotten into two matches already.

Perhaps this being is aware that the universe is becoming colder, and the point of the game is to prolong the continuity of the big-bang by creating and conserving energy.

That was the pitch of the world’s most complex game ever.

Not quite like that. Think of it like a public transport system. You and your friend could start at the same place, arrive at the same destination, and take very different paths. :)

How about a web of thirty-seven elements that branch off each other to create two hundred and eighty-eight possible combinations?

(I’ve been working on this “Element Tree” as I call it for years.) :P

After creating an entire fictional world based solely on the four classical elements, I have about a million and one ideas right now. :P

Topic: Game Programming / Best way to know what your doing?

Not everyone learns by doing, if you know how you learn best, apply it. If you learn by listening, do a workshop or course in programming, or watch a video. If you learn by reading, forums like this, as well as books, are ideal. If you do learn by doing, just go for it.

Other classes and weapons will be slower, but for this class, the attacks need to be very fast.

Thanks for that, It’ll definitely have a white blur for the skill animation. There were another 8 frames before that where the character went from standing to having the sword drawn back to swing. I’m not really concerned about the details though because it’s at 45FPS so the whole swing is in the blink of an eye.

School’s finally finished for the term so I had a chance to look at the responses and try to keep working on it. Here’s where I am so far…

I’d already got the standing and walking part down by the time I made this thread, what I’m struggling with is the actual swinging, shooting, and stabbing of weapons.

I’ve just started working on my RPG, and it’s going to be top-down. But I’m really struggling with the animations for the weapon attacks. The walking and standing was really simple, but once I had to do hands, I failed miserably. Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to draw the character swinging a sword in one hand and holding a shield in the other?

Topic: General Gaming / Slimes in RPGs

‘Slimes’ are undoubtedly the biggest clichés in RPG history, making appearances in everything from Maplestory to Minecraft and back again. And I’m looking at the history of slimes. I find it a really interesting concept and phenomenon, that one enemy could make appearances in so many games. So here’s the fun question for you all:

How many games can you name with Slimes as an enemy? I’ll be making a list of them, as well as the game’s release dates, just to see who was first. Though I’m inclined to believe that it was the Dragon Quest series that really made slimes what they are today.

Games with slime enemies:
The Tower of Druaga – 1984 – Namco
Dragon Quest series – 1986 – Square Enix
NetHack – 1987 – The NetHack DevTeam
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island – 1995 – Nintendo
Wizardry 8 – 2001 – Sir-Tech
Maplestory – 2003 – Wizet
Minecraft – 2011 – Mojang

Topic: Collaborations / Project Cardgame

We can definitely work something out as far as an in-game reward goes.

And I don’t want the cards to be like every RPG where the female characters are straight out of a hentai. Most of them would be in some form of armour, and they should be covered up to protect them. The elementalist classes and stealth classes might have a little leeway, but these characters are meant to be feared, not ogled.

Topic: Collaborations / Project Cardgame

It’s definitely a real concern, but I’m not sure I’m in a position to be picky. I can always trace the bitmap to a vector format to get rid of discrepancies like pencil strokes for example.

I’m about to start work on a TCG, and obviously I can’t do all the artwork for all the cards on my own. This document will describe all the cards I don’t have artwork for, and any artist is free to draw the art, send it to me, and get full recognition in the game.

Even if you just do one sword for example, it would be greatly appreciated.

Topic: Game Programming / GiTD [#29] Entries and Discussion (started!)

I wasn’t going to do this. School started yesterday and I’m doing lights and sound at a local theatre, opening night was last night. But when I read “night and day” I had this incredible inspiration for a great game that’s so simple it’s hilarious. It doesn’t require any artwork, and it wont take long to finish, so I think I’ll go for it!

Topic: Kongregate / [Contest] Aliens vs. Colonial Marines Quest (Colonial Marines Win!)

Including such a high-end unity game really eliminates a lot of people from the human side. So I’m pretty sure the Aliens will surely win just because of that. Bad idea to include that game in a contest.
