Topic: Serious Discussion / can we keep the human race from destroying itself?

Overpopulation solves itself, think of how the world is even able to sustain so many humans. It’s because of the wealth of energy and resources such as oil, fossil fuels, coal, etc. When the earth eventually runs out of those resources, people will die, thus solving population overshoot. Once this happens, humans will have new incentives to further development into space in order for out population to expand. If we have already invented space technology before the earth runs out of resources, then the death of billions can be averted. The earth can only sustain several hundred million to a billion people with renewable resources alone, solar energy, hydro, chemical, etc. There is a population cap and it has been exceeded because humans have been able to tap into limited latent energy.

Topic: Serious Discussion / What if a God does exist?

How is my view of the Christian God distorted? How can it be distorted in the first place? Just because it does not agree with your definition of god automatically makes my view distorted? Furthermore, how am I supposed to understand God? The concept of God was established as the opposite of what humanity is or is supposed to be; there is no distorted view of god because to understand the concept of god is to hold that view. To understand god would make me the closest being to him/her, even the messengers of god did not understand god’s actions. And I’m not an Atheist, to assume that I am because my views differ from yours clearly shows your bias.

Topic: Serious Discussion / What if a God does exist?

Poor ryan, you’re so confused, I sympathize with you /hug. Btw just to correct you, God did not die for the sins of man, Jesus supposedly did. God does not hate Satan, sin or hell, God is assumed to be incapable of hatred, he can only love. It’s ok, I’m going to assume you’re young and that you will eventually figure things out for yourself when you get older. I’m also going to assume that you stumbled into this environment in search of answers, well you won’t find them in here or anywhere you look because you must create your own truth using what you learn.

What I would say to god if he exists, hmmm…. I would say screw you for making us suffer. Screw you for making us wonder why we suffer. Screw you for making us wonder why we exist. Screw you for making us question your existence. Screw you for creating us. Screw you for making me hate you! I’m not an atheist but it’s fun making believe I am.

Topic: Serious Discussion / A World Without Religion?

You're misunderstanding me :P, perhaps I'm vague or general or something. What I'm simply implying is that: To consider the the needs of others selflessly before the needs of oneself is the destruction of human potential. The ideal of perfection (to be an altruist) is an aspect of religion that allows it to maintain its power over the individual using moral justifications, if a man should consider himself more important than the collective entity than he is considered a blasphemer and is immediately obliterated, or silenced. Altruism serves to enslave the individual to the collective entity, what you claim to be survival is that of the collective entity and thus the destruction of the individual. There is no fear involved when I mention religion because (oooh you thought that because I used the word condemned), I do not mean that they go to hell if they do not meet the standards of the ideal. I mean the ideal of perfection is false and that is not what humanity should strive for, when people fail to be perfect, it is because they should not try to be perfect in the first place. Humanity is not imperfect, what is considered to be flaw is collectively decided upon, much like the concept of truth. When Copernicus believed that the sun was the center of the solar system, society thought he was insane. If Copernicus was an altruist, he would not have presented what is commonly held true now, he would instead promote the idea that the earth was the center which would satisfy the ignorance of society. I never denounced the importance of social interaction, I denounced altruism which is what you're misunderstanding. Wow, I've really digressed from the topic, what "internet tough guy" speech btw? I'm no tough guy.

Topic: Serious Discussion / the truths an lies of "The Da Vinci Code"

It’s pretty obvious to me why Christianity would oppose Paganism, Christianity needed to abolish the old dominant form of religion in order to establish it’s own authority. It’s like rebelling against a dictator to create a democracy that gradually develops into a totalitarian society in order to be overthrown again. Even if Paganism influenced Christianity, dominance can’t be shared.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Why are you Atheist?

You are not wrong for believing in god, and those who do not believe in god are not wrong either. It is sooo sooo sooo wrong to relate religion to god, I’m referring specifically to the concept of god, let nobody influence your own interpretation of god. After all, God is a perception of reality, it is proof that human suffered because it represents the opposites of humanity. Humans can change for better or for worse, God cannot change. The question concerning the existence of god is irrelevant. Nobody should feel wrong for believing that humanity has a destiny or a purpose because god created it, faith is admirable. There is also no wrong in believing that humanity has no preordained destiny or purpose except for the one determined by the individual either, perseverance is equally admirable.

Topic: Serious Discussion / A World Without Religion?

Ugh I really need to learn to quote...
SaintAjora said: "You are inferring a great deal here. Religion pushes us towards impossible goals which traps us with the inability to do what we feel needs to be done? Bull. While some people may draw that conclusion from such things, they can find that same idea in plenty of other places. It all comes down to how the individual approaches it."
I think you misunderstood me, I was referring to the ideal of a perfect person which the religion defines, because people fail to obtain that state of perfection they feel unworthy, and sinful or even goes as far as to say that the nature of human is evil. Yes I do not deny that altruism is a fundamental base of human interaction, but why should it be so? Because it is convenient. Why should one be selfless and virtuous? If a person fails to meet these standards, should he/she feel wrong and sinful? Religion certainly says so, this is what I see to be a form of dangerous slavery because it is not even the religion that is truly subjugating the individual but it is the individual. That individual will have even more incentive to adhere to the principles of the religion in order to redeem his/her faults, thus continuing the cycle of slavery. I will certainly never selflessly concern myself with the welfare of another (except if I had a child) because that violates my human obligation to myself, the keyword is "selfless". I will however concern myself with the welfare of another human being for mere convenience. I feel no shame for hating another person, and I know others don't either. To love thy neighbor is to hate thy self.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Democrat vs. Republican: A Political Thread

How do you quote? oh well

People misunderstand the purpose of “third parties”, their goal is not to win the election. They exist merely to present an issue that is not sufficiently represented by the democrats or republicans. “Third parties” take votes from the parties in order to gain attention for their issue, this obviously hurts the main parties and forces them to consider the third party’s issue. When either the democrats or republicans adopt the issue of the “third party” then its purpose is fulfilled.

Topic: Serious Discussion / A World Without Religion?

There is only one definition of religion, there are many interpretations of it however. I think most religions are evil because it is based upon the fundamentals of altruism. Religion maintains the dominant ideal of perfection which is ultimately impossible to attain, because people fail to attain such an unreality they are forever condemned. This is slavery, the conscious and unconscious rejection of foreign thought is a means and an end. This ignorance breeds pride and contentment because the ideals religion must be held as an absolute and restricts further thought. Not needing to think and therefore to deviate is often misunderstood as freedom.

With that said, a world without religion is difficult to imagine because many people are willing to sacrifice true freedom (of thought) for contentment and “happiness”. It is even more difficult to determine who truly benefits from religion, especially if this pathetic state of happiness can be considered beneficial. There will always be war, aspects of humanity such as society, religion, government, and collectivism make war possible, if religion was nonexistent then the only wars left are those without any religious connection which is essentially all wars that have occurred. If religion was erased then there will be something else to replace it because religion, government, and society relies on the innate human act of submission to maintain power over the individual. Man is not born free.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Good and Evil - Relative or Absolute

Perception, that’s all it is. If you compare humans to animals, it is relative. If you compare humans to humans, it is absolute. This is a major reason why I don’t believe animals and humans are comparable to each other, especially in matters of survival. Morality opposes the basic desire to survive. -Mass genocide is bound to occur at one point or another and it is going to happen again in the future.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Global Warming

I disagree philnotfil, the geological timescale does show that the earth naturally goes through cycles of hot and cold but within the last decade, temperature and CO2 levels have risen off the charts. This is clearly not a coincidence, our actions have direct and indirect influences on nature and the earth, how can you say that global industrialization is insignificant in the changing environment of the earth? Look at the havoc oil leakages have on an environment, how is that any different from CO2 emissions being emitted every second of every day into the fragile balance of the atmosphere? I think you are missing the point of the “crisis”, we are not actually endangering the planet, global warming may indeed affect it but it won’t destroy it; the ones being affected will be countless animals and us. Global warming poses the biggest threat to humans, if you want to ignore your responsibilities as a human, then stay out of the argument. It’s bad enough that there are people who understand and realize our role in the situation and do nothing about it, but it is much worse for you to question the work of environmentalists and scientists who are trying to save the world just so you can live. Therefore you should stop telling people that there is nothing to fight against because you are in denial or that you clearly feel the need to tarnish the motives of others just so you can have a feeling of accomplishment in what you call your “insignificant” life.

Topic: Serious Discussion / What is a dream?

They say you can never die in your dreams, I remember being killed several times, I was either in the process of dying or dead but still conscious in the dream… I didn’t feel the pain of death because my body has never felt it before, but I felt my body dying, without the pain. Weird huh? Once I was bitten by a snake in a dream, I felt the poison go through my body, it felt like heat traveling inside me. I was shot in the head before in a dream, I felt my brains or blood drain out of my head. I was stabbed another time, and I fell from somewhere high up, luckily I woke up right before I hit the floor. Maybe the dream was the interpretation of my brain of a physical sensory that I was feeling at the time while I was sleeping, that didn’t come out right, I’m not being attacked while I sleep. It might even be spirits haunting me, who knows?

Topic: Serious Discussion / Homosexual Marriage

Demographically same sex marriage is good, how many single 40+ year olds do you think there are? Plus, they can adopt children who are in need of a family, society will soon accept it as the “norm”. And on the issue about divorce, same sex marriage shouldn’t affect that statistic at all in my opinion, people gay or straight just don’t commit to marriage as much anymore.

@Glip: cough lol you can’t seriously believe that can you? Denial maybe? @Mayan Calender: the date isn’t recorded as the end of the world (human presence on earth), it’s truly a gross misinterpretation of a date that happens to be on a calender. It’s just the last known recorded date on the calender, that’s all it is! To think they would have bothered to kept on adding dates would be silly.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Questions about Christianity

I don’t have anything against theists, but I do have a big problem with religion. Whether or not god exists is truly a pointless question and many people fail to see that what they are actually debating. Debaters aren’t arguing the existence of god, but whether or not they believe god exists. How can they even hope to answer such a question? My issue with religion is that most of them are proselytical, the same with atheists who try to convince others that god does not exist. Stop ruining peoples’ lives, well we’re bound to do that someway or another.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Is Believing in God or Not Believing in God the neutral state?

“To be or not to be”; “To believe or not to believe”. These two statements have absolutely no relation to each other, I just included it for the sake of being theatrical. Anyway, this thread (is that what you call it?) was created to argue which is the neutral state or the intended state of the existence of God in the human mind. The answer is probably neither, both, etc. or pointless altogether. Regardless, I would like to hear your opinions, and if you do not understand my question, I’m afraid I can’t offer an efficient explanation. To those who do understand, you know what to do.

Topic: Serious Discussion / i am confuzd

The “more” refers to my skepticism (sorry if it was too vague, but I tried to remain neutral upon the subject), I do not agree with it to tell the truth, it’s just something that is… I see it more of a devolution of the English language, but none the less people prefer to type in such a fashion. Aside from this mutation of English on the Internet, it is also changing in foreign countries, foreign speakers infuse their native dialects and accents into the English. Most notable are the Chinese, I however do not see this as a bad thing.

Topic: Serious Discussion / i am confuzd

I would have to say that it is merely a mutation of English the Internet Age has brought about. It allows for faster typing while sacrificing coherence, a supposedly spontaneous reaction to the fast-paced era of the Internet. Also, it supposedly originated through the growth of direct internet communication (ie: AIM), and has since been adopted by countless adolescences and adults to communicate faster and more efficiently.

Topic: Serious Discussion / Evolution; scientific fact or believed by faith?

“God either exists or don’t, yes? If he does exist then everybody who doesn’t believe is pretty much royally screwed. If he doesn’t exist then it really doesn’t matter. Conclusion: it is only logical to believe in God.” -zakkr. I want to revise this so if I may: “God either exists or don’t, yes? If he does exist then everybody who doesn’t believe is pretty much royally screwed. If he doesn’t exist then everybody who believes/d is pretty much royally screwed. Conclusion: it is only logical that somebody gets screwed by God…” Also as Phoenix stated, I want to remind everyone that Evolution does not relate to the creation (or whatever) of the universe. Please refrain from making that dubious connection.

I wouldn’t vote for Hillary when she was running, Obama, or McCain, I’m against modern republicans, democrats, and most of all neo-cons (seriously disgusting). So since the only credible person dropped out, I suppose moving away from the U.S. until the next election would be a reasonable decision.
