“Hey kid!”

Josh looked around.

“Yeah you! Come here!”

Josh walked over to the man. He was wearing a gray sock hat, dressed in a ragged old shirt with an old leather jacket over it, wearing jeans and a pair of black, old, used shoes; a typical New Yorker.

“Wanna make an extra buck?”

Josh was hesitant. His father warned him of trouble in the City before he had walked out on them. But Josh was desperate, as his family needed the money.

Josh said with a stutter, “Wh — What do you mean?”

“Hear. Take this package the 31’st Street. I’ll meet you there and take it off your hands. Aight?”

“How much do I get paid?”

“How much do you get paid?!” The man said with a chuckle “You get paid enough! Alright? Now go!”

On his way there, Josh was puzzled. Why would a man ask him to bring some package some place, and then meet him there? Wouldn’t it just have been easier for him to take there himself? Anxiety started to hit Josh. “What could be in here?” He thought to himself. It was too late to turn back, so Josh ignored it and continued.

Those were some really convincing arguments you had there.

Thank you, I try my best.

Now if you people were to actually read the bill, we wouldn’t be discussing this, would we?

But remember the wise words of Nancy Peloci!

“We have to pass the bill in order to read it”

Sarcasm?

Paranoia.

Not sure about that, but I am sure they are creating traps on the road by changing the light to red right as you are under it, and then ticketing you for it.

My position? What position? Also if you’re going to want to be an artist for online things, like games and anything that involves a graphics engine you will need the proper software. Here are the links to the software I use.

The Adobe Master Suite
^This includes quite a few softwares, the main ones that I use are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Illustrator, however the master suite is 1500USD compared to 1000USD for each of those separately.

Zbrush
^This is what I use for my 3D modeling, it’s cool to make a model and port it over to photoshop and paint over it. An amazing software, I love it.

And if you can afford it, Autodesk Maya is an amazing software, that’s the next on my list of purchases.

I already have Photoshop, but I’ll look into Zbrush, which sounds great, and Autodesk Maya. Thank you so much!

Collaborations are pretty fun. I’ve currently have done three, but one was cancelled and another (for which the developer wanted an artist), the developer decided to go with his friend since he knew him better and wanted to work on the game. D: Basically, you can contact one another through any form really (I like using the Kongregate message system, especially if you’re on Kongregate a lot and your collaborator is on Kongregate) and first discuss what the game is about and go on to make rough copies of the game. Collaborations can sometimes take more time than if you were to make a game on your own, but usually the finished product is better when you work together to come up with creative ideas. There’s a lot of messaging and talking to one another. Files (.fla, or .swfs if it is a Flash game) are sent through file sharing sites such as Dropbox (which I personally recommend).

From an artistic stand-point, if you’re an artist and the other collaborator is a programmer, the programmer may tell you what he or she wants to see in the game and then you have a little bit of free-reign from there. An artist usually gets a cut of the revenue, but most of the time, the programmer gets more than half.

I like your charcoal drawing, but for most games you’ll need to do your art digitally. Your current digital drawing don’t seem quite up-to-par with your charcoal drawing. If you want, you can digitally redraw your charcoal drawings by scanning them and redrawing/tracing them in an art program like Photoshop or GIMP (which is free and comparable to the effectiveness of Photoshop). My favorite of your charcoal drawing is “The Hired Blade.” I would definitely love to see your drawings with a bit more color.

Thanks for the input! So do you think I should just jump into a collaboration consisting of a more inexperienced group, in order to learn as best as possible?

I’d suggest strengthening your portfolio more before you put yourself out there. I’d suggest learning proportion and shading more before you begin to do something like this, there’s a ton of tutorials out there you just have to look. Also for drawing faces, I’d take a look at this It’s a really basic interpretation of a face, but the proportions are cosmetically correct.

When you get really good at faces you can begin to morph things and make your own races, it’s pretty fun. For example here’s a project I never finished, but.

It looks kind of funny but overall it’s kind of an idea of what you can make when you learn things and understand things like that.

I’ve uploaded more of my work. Is your position still the same?

Hello. I always had a skill in sketching on paper, but I wanted to give game development a try. I have a tablet in which I can sketch naturally, and I believe I have the talent to take part in a successful collaboration. But, before I put myself out there, I want to know the process and how collaborations work.

Consider me as an intern. I’ll be part of the team, making no revenue, of course, and you will just give me some work here and there. Then, you can just touch it up to make it your own. In return, I will take advantage of the experience to learn how things work.

I prefer Simplegoogly’s approach; using timers is unreliable for that kind of things. Specially if your game sucks.

I don’t remember the name of that game, it was a badged one which used a timer and as with a lot of the badged games, its performance was crap; the timer started running when the “Level N, do this and that…” tooltip appeared and by the time it vanished, the timer-bar was already half depleted because of the lag.

Actually, it returns time in milliseconds, so you’ll have to divide by 1000 if you want your timer to use seconds.

Originally posted by vesperbot:

people say flash.utils.getTimer() returns time in seconds passed from SWF load. Just save its output somewhere in a local var, then either each frame, or each N frames refresh that text field with an altered string based on getTimer()-savedTime.

I suppose you have an enter frame event already running. you would need to declare three variables (or more depending how long you need the timer to show) each for frame, second and minute. Now just increment frame in enter frame check if it is equal to your fla fps reset it to 0 and increment sec by one then check if sec is 60 and increment minute and so on. and you can set it to dynamic text-field. like dynamicTextFieldName.text = ""+min+":"+sec; and you can make this even better looking by checking if sec is less than 10 and adding an additional 0 in front of it, similar with min so that it makes the string like 09:01
there are more eloquent ways. I think this is simplest one. Try it.

Thank you so much! I didn’t think my game was too bad, but according to feedback it was, so I took it off. When I upload a new game, I will put a special thanks to: all your names.

Again, thank you very much.

Topic: Game Programming / AS2: Timer

Hello. I am making my first game, and know very little AS2 at the moment. I plan on learning the language once I learn C++, but i have created a very simply game and only need a simple timer for the game to be released. All I desire is a little box that states how much time has passed since the user entered frame X.

I realize I am not going to be spoon fed, and I don’t plan to be. I am asking you just for the favor of giving me the code to the timer.

I assume I will implement the code onto a dynamic text box?

Thank you so much. I will put your username into the credits of my game in return for your generosity.

Thanks! I used to be one of those people, so I shouldn’t be the one to say this, but, people who say the have an idea but need help almost always show false promise.
